Tongue in Cheek Excellence from the Enigmatic Stone.......2007-03-15
All those years, Bill Wyman played superb bass in the Stones, stone-faced, off to the side. He laid down some of the greatest bass lines in rock and roll history in about as unpretentious a manner as humanly possible. And somehow, he managed to retain his sanity and his sense of humor while enduring the on-going soap opera of the Rolling Stones, from drug busts to woman-swaps to near-homicidal feuding. When he finally walked away from the Stones, they lost half of the greatest rhythm section in rock history, and in the years since, while the remaining four continue to tour to sold-out crowds around the world, Bill has gone on to become a successful writer, music historian, archivist, and archaeologist.
Wyman always was an enigma, due to his quiet nature. There was always much more going on with him than people realized. He was an army veteran. He was older. He was the Stone with a legitimate kid and wife from the very beginning, who had to balance the length of his hair between his night job and his new status as a rock and roll rebel. His romantic exploits made even Mick Jagger look like a choirboy (well, almost, though perhaps not the best-behaved choirboy). Sadly, though Wyman's song-writing ability was always there, but you'd not know it looking at the Stones' song credits. The Jagger/Richards team was a notorious rip-off combo, appropriating song credits and therefore royalties from Wyman, Mick Taylor and later Ronnie Wood.
In 1974, Bill became the first Stone to go solo with the release of his album 'Monkey Grip'. The music on the record is top-notch, heavy on the horns and a nice mix of rock and rhythm and blues. What makes the record memorable in addition to its solid music is that Wyman's sense of humor-- subdued for years due to the strains of working in the Stones--literally exploded into action. Every song on this album is a rollicking, tongue-in-cheek send-up on the perils of love and lust. It is one of the few albums I can slap on the turntable knowing full well I will chuckle at some of Wyman's lines and musical phrasing. The cagy Wyman knew full well what he was doing with this record. He was having fun. The music itself is whimsical, creative, and infectiously listenable. Whether talking about being pursued by a spurned lover with a gun, or sticking like monkey grip glue to a cheating lover, the songs are like short Peter Sellers movies. Guns, spurned crazy lovers, lovers that make your legs bend like a willow tree, white lightning that tastes so good, the desire to be the best dresser in town, all these statements are part of the wacky plots of songs that manage to rock and enchant.
You can't go wrong with this album. If you are expecting Rolling Stones, forget it. If you are expecting serious R&B, forget that, too. But if you want some insight into the creative mind of Bill Wyman, and you want to hear some original, bluesy riffs with fiddles, piano, horns, Motown-sounding lady backups, and Bill playing bass, piano, acoustic, electric and twanging away on a Jew's harp, as well as doing some pretty passable singing, you will not want to miss this record.
I consider it a must have in the Rolling Stones canon, if you are also following individual careers. It's fun all the way.
Four and a half stars, but I'm going to round upwards. Though 'Monkey Grip' is not in the same league as Mozart or the Stones, it is none the less a true contribution to rock and roll by one of rock's great bassists.
1) Shock, 2) Amusement, 3) Love/Addiction.......2004-05-22
These are the stages that most people I know seem to go through with "Monkey Grip". It's so wonderfully absurd that I can hardly describe it. It's so awful that it's great. But, yet again, it's so NOT awful! It bristles with a freshness that can't help but make you smile. It sounds like - I STILL don't know! - children's music or something of the sort. But EVERYONE I have played this (and other solo Bill) for has come to not only appreciate it, but to love it. I've seen people laugh so hard in appreciation that they have almost choked. I remember one time sitting in the tub with this cranking and laughing hysterically about how, in some ways, this is as good as Mozart...and I say that as a HUGE classical fan!!! It achieves all the same things in its own, utterly random and wierd, way. Bill Wyman is really just this freakish and lifeless Frankenstein-like entity and yet he produces THIS kind of music! The mock drama of the percussion break in the title song has to be heard to be believed, as does the (endless) repitition of "Good old Monkey Grip! Monkey Grip!" that follows it. I simply cannot say enough about this album: "Monkey Grip" is not music, nor even a state of mind, it's a WAY OF LIFE! BILL ROCKS. Just listen to this album and realize this: someone actually sat down and INTENDED to make music like this! Bill Wyman once said that with enough money, ANY record can get produced. I'm so glad that Bill had the money!!! (I also highly suggesting picking up the "Compendium". Some of the unreleased instrumentals are completely absurd: so lifeless and unoriginal that they're almost magical.)
Love it or hate it.......2003-01-30
As you can tell from previous reviews, either you will love this or hate it. Musically, the songs are excellent, but Bill's voice is thin with little range. Stylistically, the album is reminiscent of Beggar's Banquet-era Stones. Lyrically... well, if you thought Mick was the horny Stone, you'll change your mind with one listen to this. Sexual innuendo and double entendres are rife throughout. Overall, is it any wonder Bill's songs were rejected for Stones albums? Buy this with caution - it's not going to blow you away on the first listen.
Simply underrated ..........2003-01-07
Only tne truly heartless would disdain this classic album . I purchased it about the same time as "It's Only Rock n' Roll"...and quickly came to love it.Don't come here looking for the Rolling Stones-if you do ,you will be dissapointed. This is Bill Wyman. The musicianship is first class, the production is crystal clear...the songs are a mighty fun time indeed.
And shoot me if you want, but "What A Blow" would NOT sound out of place on the previously mentioned Stones cd.
there might come a time, you need a little..........2002-09-07
this album is simply great. the tunes are strictly a product of what it is to be Bill Wyman. The album should be taken as a rare glimpse of what it is to be Bill. Great jamming and humorous lyrics kill any chances for pop success. but its a [good] record. The cover alone is worth it... With lyrics like, " I like to cruise around, and be the best dresser in my hometown..." you gotta love it

Liked it more when I first bought it in the 70's.......2007-01-14
It came from Japan. I was looking for the album for years on discu, so I'm glad I found it. The songs are good, and Pussy, White Lightning and What a Blow are great songs for the bass player who scored over 2000 women. But it was a lot more relevant when it came out.

Eternal.......2005-09-06
Every track on this treasure sends a shiver down my spine. Chrissie Amphlett was at her raw impassioned best on this, and she makes you feel she's really lived the tempest she sings about. Her band and producer are right behind her, making this one of the greatest examples of that clean early 80s underground Australian sound. It's just a pity she's best known for singing about masturbation.
Punky energy and terriffic vocals.......2003-06-03
Christina Amphlett was certainly compared to Bon Scott and the rock of the 60's, but she was at the time of this recording an Iggy Pop fan. She has that dark, animal attraction and the ability to sing any lyrics with such passion that you just want to grab your hairbrush and sing into it.
The Divinyls were a true rock and roll band: they were rebellious, they were wierdos, they were trashy enough to shock respectable folk, and their songs were based on their life experiences.
Boys In Town is such a classic song about the local tart: " I must have been desperate, I must have been pretty low".. The tempo of this song suggests the girl is now flying high.
Only Lonely, Girlfriends, Gonna Get You, Only You are riff based catchy pop songs. Elsie is a tale of woe: about a suicide.
Monkey Grip indeed.......2001-02-12
I came across this rare recording in a small boutique downtown. (Apparently some aussie had just swapped this for the latest Backstreet Boys..) A soundtrack for a fairly obscure movie, "Monkey Grip" is what the Divinyls are in their essence: exciting, slightly zen, and the lady wears fishnet-stockings. "Boys in Town" somehow reminds me of "Mad Max" and "Crocodile Dundee", describing the outback desert of the 80s in a warm light as we move on with the millennium. The memories come flooding back, oh yes: koala-bears and other assorted images bring those nostalgic, cuddly moments to our hearts. Yet "Only the Lonely" is like attending a gig within the heart of rock'n'roll itself because deep down I think it IS all about sensitivity and balladry. Christina Amphlett sounds fabulous, even doing those silly noises with her lips and yodeling like no tomorrow. The production is gutsy and surprisingly up-to-date, if a bit dry in places. Dry like a desert, that is. All in all, a great recording and debut from the Divinyls, the royals of underrated stardom. If you liked "I touch myself", you'll love this. Let's hope their hiatus will soon end, shall we?
