3 out of 5 stars Commercial Success Leads To Disappointing Release.......2004-01-02

"Couldn't Get It Right" got it right commercially for the CBB. However, for many of their fans, this album was a huge letdown because it lacked many of the blues and progressive elements of previous releases. Disco was becoming popular during this time and was taking up much of the radio airwaves. Unfortunately, to some, this impacted the direction CBB would take. Gone (for the most part) are the blistering lead guitar licks of Peter Haycock. Enter more of the funky, disco rhythms and sax of Colin Cooper. For those who like the older CBB material, "Rollin' Home", which is quite good, and possibly, "Extra", are worth noting. The rest is less notable and par for the course, radio friendly muck, that isn't so "Sav'ry" for my taste.

4 out of 5 stars Climax Blues Band Gets Their First Hit!.......2002-08-28

This album came two years after 1974's Sense of Direction album that, more or less being released almost at the same time of their knock-out FM Live album, introduced the US to them.

It's a good time rockin' album with strong blues and funk influences. Beginning with this album there is a bit more commercial gloss to the production that would prove to be the norm in their following records. I find it interesting that Miles Copeland, older brother of the Police's Stewart Copeland, was the manager for Climax Blues Band. Besides co-founding IRS records the man could spot talent like Wishbone Ash and these guys.

The fact that this band toured so heavily made them one of the very tightest bands during the seventies. They wrote interesting music that allowed them to show off their chops in a way that never seemed frivilous. Just really tight playing on well crafted songs. They were different with the baritone vocals and distorto sax of Colin Cooper making them hard to compare with just about any other group then or now.

Try this album if you like bluesy well crafted 70's rock. It has enough pop influence to make it very accessible as the popular hit single, "Couldn't Get It Right", proved in 1974.

If you would like to explore the "earthier" less pop-oriented Climax Blues Band, go backward in their catalog-especially FM Live. If you like the more commercial Climax Blues Band go forward in the catalog (if you can find the later albums in print)which continued the glossier production and finally came to a great, if unexpected, pinnacle on 1980's "Flying The Flag" album containing the biggest, possilbly most unrepresentative smash hit single Climax Blues Band ever had, the fabled "I Love You".

I really love this band and highly recommend this album, along with FM Live, to give a listener a primer to the blues and pop sides of what is a sorely missed group, the Climax Blues Band.

    5 out of 5 stars i love this album.......2001-04-02

i love this album. i first bought it in 1977 when i was 10 years old. i would listen to it after being at the swimming pool and i would set the little speaker from the stereo outside the front door and crank it up! it brings back memories. my favorite songs are together and free, chasing change( i like the bass), mighty fire, savry gravy, and of course couldn't get it right. i highly recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars Very poor substitute.......2000-02-21

These songs are about what one would expect for knock-offs of ABBA tunes by no-name bands. The music sounds thin and campy. The bands have for the most part tried to remain true to the original arrangements, but that just adds to the disappointment -- there is little new or exciting here, just (mostly) poorly done remakes.

To give some specifics, in "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)", the singer can't even pronounce "midnight" -- it comes out, appropriately enough, as "midnaaaaagh". In "Take A Chance On Me", the background male voices chanting the lead-in can't keep the timing or the words straight; the original sounded brilliant, while the remake sounds like they're tongue-tied.

The sole bright spot is Wool's "Summer Night City" (on Vol 2), in which the singer shows at least a bit of real energy despite her overly rigid attention to the beat. It's not worth buying the CDs to hear her, however.

People unfamiliar with ABBA will be bored, while ABBAphiles will be either outraged or rolling on the floor laughing their (bleep)es off.

5 out of 5 stars Gold plated (an enjoyable album).......2001-07-05

I'm giving this 5 stars to oppose the 2 star review along side mine.

I bought GOLD PLATED in 1976(age 10) at my local record shop and it has stayed with me ever since. Sure, it's not the straight blues album that I'm sure many blues purists wanted but it is an enjoyable effort.

Sometimes these purists can be annoying with their almost religious stances. Trust me, I DO support the fact that bands have their best stretches of top-notch glory(KISS & AEROSMITH are great examples; easily being their best in the 70's.) I feel that Climax Blues Band WAS best on their earlier straight blues efforts but I also feel that albums like Gold Plated enhanced their career and made them seem more versitile. Disco just screwed up alot of rock band's careers. GOLD PLATED is NOT a disco album. It's just a funk/pop influenced blues album that succeeds on most levels.

Like it or not, "COULDN'T GET IT RIGHT" is an excellent song. I have also always enjoyed "SAVRY GRAVY", "ROLIN' HOME" and especially "CHASING CHANGE", which is a tight but smooth and groovy number with cool lyrics.

I guess this album is more accurately a 4 star lp (or if you want to be harsh, a 3 star) but it is not a 2 star lp. I'm here to average it out properly and let people know that they may very well enjoy this album as well.

**note: The Repertoire 1991 release of this CD misprints the title "Chasing CHANGE" as "Chasing CHASE."

            2 out of 5 stars Fame Kills.......1999-05-18

The CBB had a hit with "Couldn't Get It Right" and it was the end of a great band. Most of the rest of the tracks on this album are marginal at best, and all of the following albums struggle to find focus.

Too much money, too much fame, maybe they attracted the wrong kind of producers or took too many drugs -- whatever the reason it was the beginning of the end. Too bad. When they were hot, they were really hot.

i love this album. i first bought it in 1977 when i was 10 years old. i would listen to it after being at the swimming pool and i would set the little speaker from the stereo outside the front door and crank it up! it brings back memories. my favorite songs are together and free, chasing change( i like the bass), mighty fire, savry gravy, and of course couldn't get it right. i highly recommend it!

            5 out of 5 stars i love this album.......2001-04-02
