The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

This is a mixture of choral and orchestral music by two great American composers, music that can only be described as patriotic. But don't let that keep you away from Copland's heartbreaking Lincoln Portrait or Roy Harris's much-neglected American Creed. James Earl Jones supplies the narration in Lincoln Portrait. American Creed is filled with Harris's usual open harmonies and melodic expansiveness and is actually a very complex triple fugue. The miking for this entire recording isn't as close to the orchestra or clear as it could be, but this is a great collection nonetheless. --Paul CookCustomer Reviews:
The True Spirit Of America.......2006-05-18
The true essence of patriotism, a term too often used for less-than-honorable ends by certain political operatives throughout history, is very evident in both Copland's and Harris' works. Harris is represented by the intensely proud two-part work "American Creed", and his 1935 overture "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", based on the famous World War I song. It is also evident in Copland's rarely heard "Canticle Of Freedom", which here is sung by the Seattle Symphony Chorale.
It is in the three popular Copland pieces--"Fanfare For The Common Man"; "Lincoln Portrait"; and "An Outdoor Overture"--that the best of America lies. The towering brass chorale of "Fanfare" symbolizes, as its title surely indicates, the ability of the common man to achieve the uncommon; while "An Outdoor Overture", written in the 1930s for the Manhattan High School of Music & Art, celebrates American youth. And then there's "Lincoln Portrait", with the words of our 16th president spoken by James Earl Jones, one of our country's greatest actors and voices, with great strength and authority, allowing us to know that while we may be the greatest nation on Earth, we can ALWAYS be better. Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony provide masterful performances throughout this stunning 1992 recording. This is highly recommended for anyone wanting to know the true spirit of our nation beyond the constant and often wreckless political rhetoric that so often abounds here.
Great Lesser-known Masterpieces.......2005-11-03
Fanfare for the Common Man brings nothing new, but it is such a great miniature. Less recorded is the Lincoln Portrait. Copland opens with a slow triumphant fanfare melody which gives way to a faster "Camptown Races" melody and brilliantly weaves the two together. The piece ends with a dramatic reading by James Earl Jones.
Canticle of Freedom, rarely heard, features chorus. The music and text are interesting enough to wonder why it has been neglected. Along with the Outdoor Overture, Copland uses not only uses his trademark rhythms and harmonies, but dissonance is judiciously placed to give his music an American experience.
Roy Harris' American Creed and When Johnny Comes Marching Home are also rarely heard, nonetheless recorded. Harris' music is a bit more ponderous than that of Copland, and while Harris sticks with more classical formal designs, it is interesting to note the many harmonic and orchestration similarities which exist between the two composers. Harris' energetic "When Johnny..." is also very interesting, especially when compared to the more famous American Salute by Morton Gould.
The liner notes are voluminous accounts into the background of Copland. You really get the gist of how close he was to music and patriotism and how that evolved throughout the 20th Century. The Seattle Symphony plays well on this disk; you can tell they have a real feel of the music. While you can find better recordings of Fanfare and the Outdoor Overture, you can't beat this Lincoln Portrait, and you probably won't find the other works anywhere else, especially so well performed. Copland was serious about music and democracy and it shows in these works; the lesser known ones are greatly eclipsed by his more famous works, and so you probably have to be a Copland junkie to buy this CD. In that case, this will be an easy buy for you!
James Earl Jones Is SUPURB.......2004-10-02
An interesting note: Every speaker since James reads the following line, "government of the people, by the people, and for the people." with the emphasis on the words "of", "by" and "for". When James reads it he shift the emphasis to the word "people" each time and it makes an impressive difference. He is masterful. I've must have played this piece at least 10 times since I received it a week ago.
Buy it!

Great Fourth of July album.......2003-01-11
"Fanfare for the Common Man" is also here in all its brassy glory, although if you're like me you've heard it so often it gives you a headache. But in all likelihood you haven't heard the other Copland works on this CD: "Canticle of Freedom" and the seldom-performed "An Outdoor Overture." "An Outdoor Overture" is second-tier Copland -- a pleasant symphonic poem, nothing too remarkable. "Canticle of Freedom," on the other hand, exemplifies Copland's worst tendencies as a composer; most of it is just noisy and not musically interesting.
The real surprise here is Roy Harris's three-movement "American Creed," which is both inspiring and musically sound. It is a patriotic symphony that mostly avoids bombast, and it ought to be performed far more often. Harris is a much underrated composer, and this is one of his best works.
On the whole, this CD is a smashing good classical music collection for a Flag Day or Fourth of July holiday -- or for any time you just want to celebrate being an American.
Perfect collection of patriotic fare........1999-10-14

While they have been compared with ColdPlay (lyrics, lavish musical climaxes) and Doves (lush and spacey productions) they are really a force to be reckoned with all on their own. Yeah, it has the same powerful vocals, guitar and rhythms as their first. Not to mention it has another killer title (the latter two albums do as well)- that always helps!
This was the first KoD album I heard but "Death of Cool" is my favourite. You can never get enough of the ethereal genius that KoD creates.
This is a great start in the KoD world. Fans of KoD, should own this as well as the other three albums. Oh and the EPs, singles, compilations...

I loved Ride's "Nowhere", Catherine Wheel's "Ferment", MBV's "Loveless", Slowdive's "Just for a Day", and Lush's "Deluxe", but "Strange Free World" by Kitchens of Distinction stands out among the best of the shoegaze set, and is the sadly unedrappreciated leader of the pack, the alpha chief star destroyer, if such a thing exists. Produced by Hugh Jones (some Echo and the Bunnymen), this second K.O.D. release from the year 1991 is gold from beginning to end. Unfortunately, this was a time when all of this great music from the UK was being overshadowed by a dumb stateside genre of music called grunge. Blech. Now, kids are discovering this stuff once again, but still not enough in my opinion. While most of the groups I mentioned earlier were great, their voices tended to get lost in the layers of guitars and effects and the lyrics at times were a bit vague and abstract, which is fine. However, it's refreshing to hear an album that is just as sonically engaging, if not better sounding than the others ("shoegazey" if you will) yet with honest, cohesive, clear lyrics and excellent vocalls pitifully copied by the likes of the vastly overrated Interpol (God, and those annoying clothes and haircuts--come on people!!!). Again, while the atmospheric, shoegaze aspect of the music is very appealing to me, it's those timeless lyrics that bring it home again and again. And, these guys can raise the tempo and rock like none other. Songs like "Gorgeous Love" and "Drive that Fast" are just a couple of the highlights on this unsung classic released during a very exciting time in current music history, and still sound brand new today.
14 Years Later, still listening to this!.......2005-01-07
Still Gives Me Chills.......2004-09-01
Another KOD reviewer on Amazon had problem with some of the gay-themed lyrics. If you can't get over that, then frankly you don't deserve to hear it. The guitar effects will put you in a trance, and the songs flow together seamlessly. One of the reasons KOD didn't have mainstream success is their songs are some heavy duty songs about LOVE, both gutwrentching, and glorious.
One of the top 10 CD's that changed my life.
Just buy it.

"top film scores of the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-18
Master of arranging, Faith's formula is so natural in keeping the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive style ~ his tasteful treatment always highlights the quality of the composition ~ ultimately making them a hit all over again. Remember the days when you could turn on the radio and hear Percy Faith with many familiar pop standards ~ when you put this compact disc on your player, get ready for the "Percy Faith Touch" sprinkled with pure magic over the orchestration and leaves you simply in that unforgettable mood.
Top performances inclusive for the twenty two tracks of film score themes ~ "A MAN AND A WOMAN" (Barouh/Lai), "A TIME FOR LOVE" (Webster/Mandel), "ALFIE"(David/Bacharach), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart), "BORN FREE"(John Barry), "CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG" (Richard M. Sherman/Robert B. Sherman), "ELVIRA'S THEME" (Percy Faith), "FOR LOVE OF IVY" (Russell/Quincy Jones), "THEME FROM "THE FOX" (Lalo Schlfrin), "FUNNY GIRL" (Merrill/Styne), "GEORGY GIRL"(Dale/Springfield), "THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER" (Peggy Lee/David Grusin), "HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA?"(Harburg/Lane), "THE LION IN THE WINTER"(John Barry), "SONG FROM "THE OSCAR" (Evans/Livingston/Percy Faith), "THEME FROM "THE SAND PEPPLES" (Bricusse/Goldsmith), "SOMEWHERE MY LOVE(Lara's Theme from "Dr. Zhivago")"(Webster/Jarre), "STAR" (Cahn/Van Heusen), "THIS IS MY SONG" (Charles Chaplin), "THIS HOTEL" (Keating/Quine), "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" and "THE WISHING DOLL" (David/Bernstein) ~ notice two of the selections were composed by the man himself Percy Faith! Impressive line up of top movie songs that will surely satisfy the appetite of all "film-score-buffs" and Percy Faith fans...gotta love it!

good, most accessible, but not their best.......2007-04-13
The record is largely a collection of ballads, bookended by the slow builds of Station Approach and Great Expectations (Puncture Repair, the final number, is a cute coda "about friendship," according to lead singer Guy Garvey); anchored by the stomping anthemic Forget Myself; and diminished only by the title track, which is fine politically but musically is a disorganized mess.
Gone are the gossipy numbers of Cast of Thousands or the itchy, dissatisfied smoke-filled-pub themes from Elbow's debut Asleep in the Back. They have largely been ditched--Picky Bugger aside--in favor of more traditional themes of love, jealousy, and heartbreak. But Garvey remains one of today's more clever lyricists. "I'm not superstitious but if I can get this ball in the basket then he'll wake up dead," he pouts in Mexican Standoff.
And yes, I will address the Peter Gabriel and Coldplay comparisons, since they seem to be mandatory. Garvey's delivery is indeed a hybrid of Gabriel and Chris Martin, though he sounds more everyman and bloke-ish, and thus more accessible, than either of them. Elbow does evoke Coldplay in its exquisite layering of guitars and pianos and general British sensibilities. But the comparisons end there. This is, emotionally, musically, truly unique material that is all its own.

I'm Stunned.......2002-03-02
Who'd've thunk it? Dave Binney? That obscure alto player with the--let's not mince words--highly problematic outing, Luxury of Guessing, on perhaps one of the world's most obscure jazz labels, Audioquest, coming up with sheer beauty, musical transcendence, and absolutely brilliant conceptualization, composition, and playing on this invisible label, Mythology? Talk about out of left field!!
Look, if you're a jazz fan, do me a favor: Buy this disc. I warrant, you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. Everything works here: Ravishingly beautiful melodies perfectly contextualized in rich yet deceptively simple instrumental settings; sophisticated yet completely accesible harmonic and tonal colorations; delicately nuanced performances from some of the top jazz practioners on the scene today; and arrangements specifically designed to showcase each performer's strengths without degenerating into mere virtuosity.
If you buy this album and don't like it, I'll personally refund your money.

Product Description
Free & Easy is the culmination Lovespirals 3-year exploration of fusing myriad musical interests into a satisfyingly smooth sound they refer to as electro-acoustic pop. While Windblown Kiss cleverly disguised Lovespirals' digital recording techniques with its focus on organic sounds and more traditional songwriting styles, Free & Easy embraces the bands electronic origins, offering a balanced blend of elements from their earlier dance-oriented material as well as their more rock-based pop offerings. Every track on Free & Easy has its own unique feel; the title track and album opener, "Free and Easy", is laid-back Morcheeba-esque downtempo flavored with old-school R&B stylings, including melodious Rhodes piano and wah guitar. "Hand in Hand" takes an earlier jazz-step single, slows it down to a relaxed liquid funk pace, then builds it up with heartbreakingly sweet vocal harmonies, a light, jazzy mix of acoustic and electric guitars, and a smatter of saxophone by special guest musician, Doron Orenstein. "Deep in my Soul", the funkiest of the bunch, is an upbeat deep house track featuring soulful vocals and gritty wah work, ending on a spiritual note with soaring hammond organ chords. The album takes another unexpected turn with, "Habitual", whose sparse arrangement and hushed tone recalls some of the late 60's, early 70's music that inspires the band. Album closer, "Sandcastles", further amplifies this retro rock influence in the form of an extended guitar jam breakdown and dramatic gospel-style closing. Throughout this 43-minute collection of electro-acoustic downtempo, deep house, and jazzy-yet-rock-infused chill out, Lovespirals traverse many genres while maintaining a recognizably dreamy, sensual vibe courtesy of the smooth, soulful guitar and Rhodes piano of Ryan Lum, enhanced by the seductive vocals and romantic lyrics of Anji Bee.Customer Reviews:
Love Survives.......2005-11-13
Easy on the soul........2005-11-09
Lum's eclectic musical talents and mixing skills set Free & Easy on fire, while Bee's vocal poetry cool it down with tunes best suited for the vinyl and headphones crowd. If you're new to Lovespirals, Free & Easy won't disappoint. The 9 tunes spun into this album run through the veins of downtempo (as the "easy" title suggests) to the heart of jazz, and end up in your soul.
Take my word for it. Free & Easy is worth the trip.
