    Album Description

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent....with a catch.......2007-01-18

Everything about this album is very high quality. Pleasing song choices, a top rate artist, phenomenal sound quality, and the twenty tracks. However, I must rate it at 4 stars because it claims to be "The Very Best of Taj Mahal". This is, better stated, the very best of Taj Mahal throughout the 1990s. Everyone who appreciates fine blues music will easily appreciate this fine sampling of his later works.

Despite this not being a sampling of all his works throughout his musical career, this album is a fine selection to own. Many of these tracks highlight Mahal the eclectic, a genius who in later years combined strong elements of jazz, Zydeco, Calypso, reggae and tribal music fusion with his blues.

Take the first track, "Senor Blues". This song begins with a bossa nova kind of feeling, with Mahal singing the song with a Latin inflection. Track two, "Don't Call Us", has almost a pop feeling to it, with elements of gospel music somewhere within. Tracks three and four have a much more down-home blues feeling to them. Track five, Betty and Dupree, has strong country blues qualities. The mixture is unique throughout on this album, showing a side of Taj Mahal fans who had not steadfastly followed him throughout his career might not easily recognize. Often I have played these tracks for friends who do not believe me when I tell them it is Taj Mahal.

    Excellent album for your collection!

5 out of 5 stars excellent compilation, excellent music.......2005-08-05

I didn't know how big Taj Mahal is on the blues scene until I heard him featured on Jimmy Rogers' All-Stars "Blues Blues Blues" album with such other greats as Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Lowell Fulson, Jeff Healey, and others. I came across Taj's "Very Best Of" disc and listened to a few samples from it in the record store, and it sounded great... So I bought it. Taj Mahal definitely has his own unique flavor, excellent tunes (whether composed or re-interpreted), and excellent singing voice that is strong and assertive and at the same time very melodic and gentle. His blues range from jazzy to rocky to down-home. Some very classy tunes. When I first bought this disc, it was the only disc I played in my car probably for several weeks until I got thoroughly familiar with it. This disc seems like a very good intro to Taj Mahal's work because it covers a variety of styles and gives you an idea about what this artist can do. He's an underemphasized gem musically, and I hear he's a real class act. I will be buying more of his CDs in the near future for absolutely certain.

5 out of 5 stars I like it, Steve always does the unexpected.......2007-02-03

....with a feeling is the understatement of all time. Steve's take of the blues is a breath of fresh air and if you can this rare CD, get it if you are a guitar fan, period.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Hackett plays the Blues!!.......2003-08-17

"Blues With A Feeling" is former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett's first full foray into playing solid blues. Besides showing off his brilliant guitar playing, Hackett also plays a mean harmonica and displays superb vocals (similar to David Gilmour).
The CD is a 12-track collection of Blues standards and Hackett originals. Only the track "Big Dallas Sky" steps away from the Blues to show off Steve's trademark progressive rock style. All in all, this a solid collection of great Blues music from the one and only Steve Hackett.
The enhanced portion of this CD includes 22 full length MP3 files. 18 of these MP3's are by Steve Hackett with two each from Chester Thompson and former King Crimson and Foreigner member Ian McDonald. If you own a computer, it's like having a whole other album in addition to "Blues With a Feeling".
Great album from one of the greats.

4 out of 5 stars Hackett does the Blues.......2000-06-16

Steve Hackett show his talent and ability with this CD. He was a experianced Harp player before he joined Genesis, and He showcases his ability here with this CD.

The Title track is a wonderful sonic experiance, soulful guitar, blistering Harp and Steve's vastly improving vocals. If you like Blues, like Gary Moore and Snowy White add this to you collection...

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2007-07-04

If you're already a big Magic Sam Maghett fan and you're looking to expand your library, then this is an excellent selection - especially given the limited selection. It gives a feel for the early development of the Magic Sam sound that helped define the Chicago west side blues, along with Otis Rush and Buddy Guy, in the '50s and '60s. If you are only a casual fan of Magic Sam, then this album is probably not for you - it gets a little repetitive and the slight nuances are probably lost on you. Personally I have enjoyed this album, but it does get a little tedious at times and the fast forward button is required.

As a side note, notice the similarity between the melody on Magic Sam's 'Do the Camel Walk' and Freddie King's 'Hideaway'. I don't know the history of this (I wish I could've lived it), it is apparently confirmed in 'Voice of the Blues' by Jim O'Neil that Freddie stole the licks from Hound Dog Taylor. I don't know how 'Do the Camel Walk' gets into the mix, as they were laid down on wax at about the same time.

2 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time.......2006-06-08

A lot of this material is markedly inferior to his later recordings. Some of it sounds tentative. Many of the songs are in a key that doesn't work for the vocals. Strictly for completists.

If you're looking for a first Magic Sam album get "West Side Soul."

3 out of 5 stars ***1/2. Some great stuff, but a lot of recycling as well.......2005-01-13

Recycling?! Yes, well, there is some really great, energetic blues and R&B here, and some sizzling guitar playing, but you also get the feeling that Magic Sam only knew two or three songs at this point in his career, and he keeps doing them over and over with slightly different lyrics.

"The Essential Magic Sam" is not a career-spanning compilation; it chronicles Sam Maghett's earliest recordings for the Cobra, Crash and Chief labels. This material has been repackaged several times, and it's hard to pick one over the other...the sound is quite good, annotation is, too.
Sam was only in his early twenties when these singles were recorded, and some of the songs show up many years later on the excellent LPs "West Side Soul" and "Black Magic". And while the gritty "Mr Charlie", the classic "All Your Love", the passionate "Every Night About This Time", and the swinging "Look Watcha Done" are certainly great songs, the Cobra, Chief and Crash singles lack some of the variation of Sam's later recordings. "Everything Gonna Be Alright", "My Love Is Your Love", "Love Me This Way", "All Night Long", and "Easy Baby" are simply carbon copies of the 1957 single "All Your Love", and this compilation would actually benefit from being cut down to perhaps fifteen songs.

Still, fans of Magic Sam will certainly want this one in their collection. Casual listeners should start with "West Side Soul", though.

    Album Description

American pianist Richard Dowling performs virtually all of Gershwin's original works for solo piano along with several new transcriptions of Gershwin improvisations from disc recordings and player piano rolls. Dowling transcribed several of the tracks himself including a world premiere of Gershwin's own three-minute rendition of the main theme of "Rhapsody in Blue." Rounding out the disc are Earl Wild's Seven Virtuoso Etudes on Themes by Gershwin.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This guy is AMAZING!.......2002-12-08

I heard one of Dowling's concerts and he's awesome! I play this CD in my car and almost got a speeding ticket because of it. Richard really knows the Gershwin style. It's upbeat and a lot of fun to listen to over and over.

    5 out of 5 stars He's Got Rhythm!.......2001-08-31

Richard's got the most amazing fingers (and ears)! He's such a good pianist that you'll swear you're hearing old George playing himself. If you love music from 1920s and 30s New York, this is about as authentic as it gets. The Earl Wild pieces at the end will blow you away. You'll want to listen to this CD over and over because the music is happy and the execution is perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Richard Dowling has found teh Gershwin Way to play.......2001-08-17

The masterful work displayed on this CD is a pleasure to listen to. The speed with which the keystrokes are perfectly executed is simply astounding. I have only had the CD for about a week and have enjoyed it completely many times.

    3 out of 5 stars Bizarre..........2007-02-28

Is this really Willis "Gator" Jackson??? If so, I can't tell you how bizarre this album is...

Freeze frame a moment: Willis "Gator" Jackson: one of the heaviest, bluesiest, grooviest, hard wailing tenors or the 60's, best known for his heavy kicking organ combo cuts that debuted a young Pat Martino...

now jump ahead... Its the roll'o'boogie 70's - - and Willis Jackson is BOOGYING all right, on the COTILLION label... playing the greatest hits of the 70's horns, strings and all. Of course, everyone at that time was doing stuff like this... Some quite well: Stanley Turrentine, Houston Person - - even Groove Holmes, Jack McDuff and Reuben Wilson were funkin' out (and quite well!) - - catch is, this album - - I don't know how to describe it.... the overall recording is... strange. Tracks are bumping at times, but most the time there's something a bit "lethargic". Sort of like a K-Tel copy of a copy of Salsoul. Orchestra is not bad (actually Seldon Powell is sitting in) but there's this strange feeling... kind of like the musicians are thinking, "ughghghghghg... why do we have to play this sh't?" - - Hence in the end, the album is best described as "potentially good" but in the end lackluster.

All in all... even if you like disco/funk (which I do), I wouldn't call this "must have", however, if you do have Jazz buff friends who are familiar with Gator, the novelty value of the album is worth it. You know what I mean.. play it with that, "You'll never guess who this is!" challenge. No, they won't guess... then you'll say "Man it's Gator!" Woe... "Gator playing FIRE and PICK UP THE PIECES... get outta here ! ! !"

    o.k. Next...

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
    I'm fascinating.

    5 out of 5 stars A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

    5 out of 5 stars Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

3 out of 5 stars ***1/2 A nice collection, but mostly for serious Walter fans.......2004-06-20

"The Essential Little Walter" remains the ultimate Little Walter compilation, and since Little Walter Jacobs' recorded output didn't quite maintain a level of quality to match that of Muddy Waters', Sonny Boy Williamson's, or Howlin' Wolf's, most casual fans can skip this one without missing all that much.

But serious Walter-scholars will certainly want to give "Blues With A Feelin'" a second glance.
The third item in the "Chess Collectibles" series, it includes a lot of rare material, most of which has never before been released on CD. And several of these 40 cuts are previously unreleased in any format, not just in the US, but wordwide.

Opening with an alternate take of Walter's first hit, the instrumental "Juke", disc one includes previously unreleased versions of "Can't Hold Out Much Longer", "Blues With A Feeling", Charles Brown's "Driftin'", two tough, Walter-penned shuffle called "That's It" and "Fast Boogie", as well as the first-time US appearances of several songs including the up-tempo jump blues tunes "My Kind Of Baby" and "I Love You So", and an alternate "My Babe" titled "Mercy Babe".
And the 1955 singles "Can't Stop Lovin' You" and "Crazy For My Baby" make their album debut here (they were previously only released as singles), as does "Who" and the instrumental numbers "Flying Saucer" and "Teenage Beat".
"Crazy For My Baby" is a Willie Dixon-tune later recorded by Dixon himself, by the way, and it is one of the best songs on a disc with a lot of good stuff but not too many really great songs.

Disc two presents the same mix of obscure singles, rare import items, and unreased numbers, like the alternate takes of "Temperature", "Crazy Mixed Up World", and "You're Sweet" (all vocal performances, none of them particularly interesting).
Walter's rendition of Maceo Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues" is not too shabby...it makes its US album debut here, as does "Baby", which features some nice guitar playing by Luther Tucker, and the Otis Spann-backed singles "You Don't Know", "Break It Up" and "Me And Piney Brown". Muddy Waters plays slide guitar on the instrumental "Rock Bottom (alternate take)", and "I'm A Businessman" is a rather interesring Willie Dixon song played an all-star band which includes Buddy Guy, Lafayette Leake, saxist Donald Hawkins, and (unfortunately) organ player Billy Emerson. It's not Emerson's fault, but the Toys 'R' Us-like organ sounds horrible.

If you're a big fan of Walter and his chromatic harmonicas, you are sure to find something of interest on this collection...Little Walter and his harp take centre stage on almost every song, and even if his playing isn't always varied enough for these two discs to be listened to in one long sitting (that's right, I said it!), harmonica lovers should definitely check out "Blues With A Feelin'".
More casual blues fans will be better served by a collection of Walter's Chess hits, "His Best" or the excellent double-disc anthology "The Essential Little Walter".

4 out of 5 stars EURO's are OK with me.......2004-02-05

I must take exception to walkthewalk's characterization of the Euro version of BLUE'S WITH A FEELING , Chess Collectibles Volume III. As is often the case, European editions of American recordings can differ in some respects from the original US release. This is the 2nd Euro Chess compilation I've purchased. The other was the also hard to find, AINT GONNA BE YOUR DOG, Chess Collectibles Volume II by Howlin' Wolf. In both cases, the packaging (high quality paper similar to environment friendly US packaging) was the only difference. The stellar 32 bit remastering, literature and tracks are identical to the originals. The one other difference between this edition and Little Walter's US version is, it's available and affordable. If you want to wait around for the out of print, US edition to someday come up for sale and are willing to pay at least double the price, be my guest. I applaud the Euros interest in classic blues recordings for keeping these awesome recordings still available there and for us here. As walkthewalk mentioned the release on Charly that carries the same name as this release, is an entirely different and vastly inferior recording. Hopefully, a Euro version of the out of print ESSENTIAL LITTLE WALTER 2 disc set on Chess (his finest compilation), will surface sometime for those of you who's desire for the mastery of Little Walter isn't upto the $70 or more the used US version will cost you. It make's good sense to always verify that the disc(s) you're buying is the actual product you want, but the socalled checker trim versions of the Chess Master Recordings are everything you could hope for. I'm listening to my brand new Euro BLUES WITH A FEELING for the first time right now and it's FANTASTIC!

1 out of 5 stars Careful Buying This CD Used!!!.......2003-12-03

This is a great CD and definitely worth having in your collection. BUT if you are trying to buy it used on Amazon, BEWARE. I recently bought a used copy of "Blues With A Feeling" on Amazon from a European seller, but that's exactly what I got -- a copy!!! Unfortunately, when the CD arrive it was not the CD shown in the picture -- and I should know because I used to own it. While it was a double CD with the exact same title and track listings, there were key differences: Instead of a full picture of Little Walter on the cover, it had a small picture surrounded by cheesey checkers. Instead of a clear jewel case, it came in a vinyl tri-fold case. All in all it seemed to be a cheap Euro knock-off of the orginal US MCI/Chess CD. As I recently found out, there is also an out of print Charly CD that goes by the same name "Blues With A Feeling"-- but it only has 1 CD and half the tracks. So, if you are in the market for this CD, BE CAREFUL. Make sure the seller describes the CD in full, i.e in their description they should verify that the Blues With a Feeling CD they are selling is the orginal MCA/Checker US one. They should also verify it is a double CD (not Charly) and that the cover looks exactly like the one in the picture!!! If they are selling the Euro Repro or the Charly version they should note this and price CD accordingly -- so buyers know exactly what they are getting. Until they do don't buy!

4 out of 5 stars Superb Blues Harmonica.......2001-12-19

Little Walter stands out for the tone and the range of his harmonica playing. Little Walter plays the harmonica with a flourish only matched by Shakey Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson. Little Walter takes the sound of this cheap instrument to another plane.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing harmonica playing........1999-09-30

    One word: wow.

A must have-cd for students of the blues harmonica and for fans of innovative, heartfelt blues.

    Wonderful liner notes as well.
