I listen to the CD everyday and it is always soothing, uplifting and inspiring. I wish I could find another as wonderful.
Most were phantastish but this one is the best.
I listen so often to this CD that it should have grooves.
I never get tired of it.

This compilation of Opera's finest moments is positively wonderful!!!!Unquestionably the best buy I have made in Opera Music..No kidding,I have trays full of CDs covering every facet of Opera,but none as beautiful...A full 2 1/2 hours of the best of the best....Heavenly Moments says it ALL...I vote 6 stars!!!!!
This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.
If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED
Precise rhythm, clear vocal lines, everything you expect from the Swingles without the jazz. This is a really great album that should be bought by all Swingle lovers and all Bach lovers.
P.S. i bought this cd when it first came out,so I have never even heard the Mozart. With all due deference to fans of the worthy Wolfgang, i have always found the artful Amadeus rather a bore, so I will remain silent about that part of the album. No matter. The Bach alone is worth twice the price, so enjoy. And, hey, the Mozart is a nice bonus.
a favor, and get this record. Music hidden in some obscure
library for centuries, brought to pulsating life by a minor
voice, here used with passion and artistry reminding one of
vocal artists of the past. An enriching experience for anyone
enjoying the art of singing.
This is a wonderful introduction to his artistry, and shows that he can sing well across a variety of styles and eras. Let's sample some cuts:
"Il mio Tesoro" (from Mozart's Don Giovanni) is a difficult aria to sing well. And Domingo is up to the challenge. He displays a smooth and rich voice. His is one of those distinctive tenor voices, like Tucker's or Pavarotti's, that is quickly recognizable. This is, as noted, a challenging piece and Domingo handles it well, showing off considerable vocal agility in the process.
From the same opera, "La ci darem la mano," a sweet duet with, in this instance, soprano Susan Graham. This seductive work is sung well by both parties and is a ravishing version.
From Puccini's "Tosca," "Recondita armonia." At the close, his voice rises above orchestra and chorus. Overall, well and richly sung.
And now for something very different. . . The "Forging Scene" from Siegfried. One may not think of Domingo as a heldentenor, but he does a serviceable job here. His voice sometimes appears a bit light, but, overall, he does estimable work. He catches Siegfried's spirit as he forges the shattered remains of his father's sword, "Nothung." When he sings the name of his sword at the close, with the leitmotif ringing out from the orchestra, it is an affecting moment.
Then, "Celeste Aida" (from Verdi's opera). A stentorian voice well deployed to meet the challenges of this wonderful aria. Some tenors scoop as they move from those lower to the higher notes; Domingo's voice is well controlled here. The final high note is well hit.
Strauss (Junior's) "Ach, wie so herrlich zu schau'n" is a romp! A fun piece and well sung by Domingo. He demonstrates, as before, excellent vocal agility.
Lehar's "O Vaterland" is also fun. It is a sprightly tune sprightly sung.
Finally, he ends the second CD with a traditional Spanish tune--"La Golondrina." He does not overpower this work with operatic technique. He sings it well and affectingly.
So, all in all, if one wants a good introduction to Placido Domingo's vocal oeuvre, this is a very strong starting point.
He is a great force in opera.
Even in his old age, he does'nt seem to be slowing down or call it quits. Recent performances (2000-2005) include Eugene Onegin, the lead in Queen of Spades, Rasputin in Debra Dratell's Nicolas and Alexandra, Idomeneo and his next role Parsifal. He is the singular tenor who mastered every repertoire- Mozart (Don Ottavio, Tamino...unfortunately Domingo as Don Giovanni is a miscast because he is too noble and romantic and GOOD to be a bad guy)..to Puccini heros (Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca, Dick Johnson in Fanciualla Del West, Rodolfo in Boheme, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Calaf in Turandot) Verdi heroes (Radames in Aida, Don Carlos, Stiffelio, etc) to the French repertoire...Gounod (Faust, Romeo) Meyerbeer heroes, Massenet hero (Des Grieux, Le Cid) and Saint Saens (Samson) the list goes on and on. When this man dies, an era will die with him. His legend will live on because he will leave behind dozens of albums, movies and memories......
Priest = Aura is a groundbreaking album. And to back my sweeping statement, I will indulge in some explanatory remarks on a few of its songs. But first I would like to say thanks to a fellow reviewer who highlighted that the Churchs's finest moments are not classified by chart rating sucess.
Sure, they have written some very catchy (and lasting) chart busters, but they are merely an aknowledgement by the masses that this band is a truly outstanding and coherent team of artists. But as in most cases, the masses can't handle or comprehend the true masterpieces, and that's one reason why Priest = Aura is above the mentality of the average chart-tracking pseudo-fan. This is a "deep" album. Its in the same league as Pink Foyd's The Wall, NIN Fragile, or U2's Zooropa.
So to now the tracks...
Aura = Is there a quintessential Church song? Add this one to your list. Poetrey and sonic lushness without comparison. Awesome song, cleverly placed on the album. The gates to the Etherworld open....
Paradox = just listen to the words. Kilbey's doing what he does oustandingly well, walking the fine line between cliche and clever poetry.
Kings = Step aside The Edge, here comes the Koppes/Wilson-Piper duo taking guitars from where Dave Gilmour left them. Probably one of the lushest Church guitar arrangements ever. When you hear this you will realise how influential these two guys have been: this album came out '92.
Dome = Steve's subtle social comentary lyrics that on the surface sound like a side episode to Aeon Flux. A definite play again track.
Dissilusionist = one of those magic Kilbey cabaret-tale moments. This is one of those songs that i am sure Nick Cave or Tom Waits would be proud to have their name on.
Old Flame = Ever had caught up with an ex-girl/boy? Dangerous temptations summed up in a minute of music. This goes straight to the heart. And messes with yourt head.
Chaos = Falling. The kind of falling that makes you wake up from your sleep in a sudden panic. Only this fall will last 9 minutes and land you safely. Epic, of the magnitude of "Is this where you live" only darker, deeper, more mature and somehehow drifting off into deep-purple-like psychedelic mayhem, but so much classier.
Film = I am not sure what to say about this instrumental number, besides the fact that it an amazing piece of music. And it closes the album so well. I love it, and it often gets played twice. In a way its that delicious feeling the you get after watching a great movie, and you have to sit through the end credits because the music is so good!
If you are a church fan you must buy this. I was given this CD by a friend who bought it and didnt like it. After one listen I said to him "i'll take it". The Church is one of the most amazing bands in the world. Forget Elvis and the Beatles, they are more like Tom Waits and Johhny Cash, you either get it or you don't.
If you are lucky enough to have this cd, take my humble advice... sit back in a dark room, light a candle and close your eyes. Play this cd at a high volume, on your home system or earphones. Don't skip tracks, just let it roll out in its fullness, like a slow ocean wave. It will take You somewhere...somewhere dark, sweet, spooky and unforgettable. If you get it, it is so good. see You there
But, I'm not here to argue, I'm simply stating the otherside of the argument. Most new fans will want to start with something like "Starfish" (with "Under the Milky Way" on it), but that album is a little sterile and unfortunately suffers from the other band members singing on them. "Priest=Aura" is a determined, focused album that has all the spacey coolness of Kilbey's vocal delivery, but with warmer production values, while not being very interested in a hit single.
Tracks like the Church archetypical title track, "Dome" "The Disillusionist" and "Chaos" are all absolute classics.
It should be remembered that this album came out exactly at the moment when Nirvana made "alternative" a non-alternative catagory. There was a great purging of bands like the Church and Robyn Hitchcock who fell in the psychadelic catagory (and had no punk street cred). Its hard to imagine that in the space of a few months all those artists could go from top 5 in the college charts to ... well, without a record contract. But, they survived because they were good. Now, finally, Church fans are starting to assert clear-voiced that "Priest=Aura" is a masterpiece.
I just find "Priest=Aura" to be too lumbering and atmospheric, with an odd Eastern European tinge to it. Other than the breathers "Feel" and "Kings," I felt I was being almost suffocated by the music, especially by the time I reached "The Disillusionist." At about the middle of the way too lengthy "Chaos," I felt like taking off all my clothes and running straight into the ocean. In fact, I believe "Priest" would have greatly benefited if the band had omitted these last two named songs, cutting almost 16 minutes off the album, and perhaps replacing them with a 4 minute uptempo song along the lines of "Reptile." But, I do respect the other type of Church fan, and am encouraged by the fact that we can all appreciate "Hologram of Baal," which, I think, perfectly blended the two styles of The Church.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.
If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

Precise rhythm, clear vocal lines, everything you expect from the Swingles without the jazz. This is a really great album that should be bought by all Swingle lovers and all Bach lovers.
P.S. i bought this cd when it first came out,so I have never even heard the Mozart. With all due deference to fans of the worthy Wolfgang, i have always found the artful Amadeus rather a bore, so I will remain silent about that part of the album. No matter. The Bach alone is worth twice the price, so enjoy. And, hey, the Mozart is a nice bonus.

Mezzo Cecilia Bartoli could easily rest on her laurels as one of today's most charismatic, characterful singers for her lively portrayals of Mozart and Rossini heroines. But it's been particularly exciting to observe her growth as an artist in exploring the exuberant world of baroque opera, with its range of pyrotechnic demands--both vocal and emotional. Bartoli's show-stopping virtuosity in a Vivaldi aria from her Live in Italy recital gave a tantalizing sample of her finesse in that style. For The Vivaldi Album, Bartoli conducted extensive research into the composer's manuscripts, (a documentary tracing her quest is planned for subsequent international screening). Although he's best known for his concertos--in typically baroque fashion, two of the arias in fact recycle material from The Four Seasons--Vivaldi was a ferociously prolific composer of operas for the cutting-edge theaters of his time, and the arias gathered here demonstrate the word-painting magic of his music, from the sylvan setting of dueting flageolets in "Di due rai languire costante" to the storm-tossed passions of "Anch'il mar par che sommerga," where Bartoli spins out ripples of rapid-fire coloratura with a gravity-defying accuracy that will leave your head spinning. In addition to many such examples of vocal acrobatics, Bartoli brings exquisite nuance and limpid tone to the delicate echo effects of "Zeffiretti, che sussurrate," and there's no better test for the remarkable flexibility of her range--full and dusky at the bottom and thrilling at the top--than the huge intervallic leaps of "Dopo un'orrida procella." With her naturally large voice, Bartoli can at times tend to histrionic excess (in the recitative to the short aria from "L'Orlando finto pazzo"), but the expressive color of her phrasing is wonderfully matched throughout by the Giardino Armonico's lively panache. Now getting to the performance by Bartoli. She really loves this music, as you can tell. Yes, she is mannered in some of the things she does, but that is her way of seeing the music. Her technical skills are amazing, and her interpretations (the "drama" behind the music) is just as intense. Some think Bartoli has a strong voice. Actually, her voice is very small, if you have heard her in performance (they weren't even sure she would be heard when she sang at the Met), and it has a very delicate quality, even when being "brash." Recordings give you the impression she has a much larger sound than she does, but that is because small voices record truer and better than large ones (the industry still can't capture large voices at all). However, even with a small voice, in performance she is breathtaking. She makes the music live. She has weird mannerisms one sees that to American trained singers are completely unacceptable (weird facial expressions, strange things done with he mouth and teeth, head bobbing, etc), but that has never distracted from her overall intensity. Yes, she is intense. You are literally taken away with her interpretation, and her skills. Interestingly, she is more famous in music circles for her cancelations (she cancels more performances in a year than she actually sings). I love this recording, not only because of the music, but because I have seen her sing some of this music live. She really LIVES what she sings, and that comes across in this recording.
A special note: in the little booklet that comes with the recording, Bartoli herself writes her impressions of this music. It is extremely insightful. Whether you like her or not, you have to admire the work she has done to make this music live and be as authentic in interpretation as she can. It is her love of this music that has caused her to record this album. I am thankful she did, for now, I can take those old scores I have and get a better understanding of what the composer was doing. Would that more singers would explore new/old works, and I think it would be far more interesting to have them write their impressions of the music they are singing than the standard academic essays we must read. Reading about how she came to this music, in her own words, gave a different dimension to listening. Now I was listening to see if she was successful in communicating what she felt this music had to offer. SHE WAS.

library for centuries, brought to pulsating life by a minor
voice, here used with passion and artistry reminding one of

Placido Domingo is a phenomenon, and every aspect of his artistry is on display in this 2-CD compilation, which includes arias from his signature roles in Italian, French, German, and Russian operas, and songs from Viennese and Spanish operettas. The original recordings range from the early 1970s to the present and show that though over the years his bright golden voice has taken on a darker, more burnished glow, it has retained the melting lyricism, the heroic ring, the thrilling top notes, and the focused intensity that make it instantly recognizable. (Comparing the Verdi arias included here with their counterparts of later vintage in the all-Verdi set The Tenor Arias bears this out.) The program demonstrates his stylistic and expressive versatility and his ability to instantly establish character and mood, from Lenski's sorrow (in Eugene Onegin), Cavaradossi's heart-rending despair (in Tosca), Otello's shattering agony, to Tristan's passion, Siegfried's exuberance, Faust's ardor (first in French by Gounod, then in Italian by Boito). In three Mozart arias, Domingo spins endless, perfectly shaped phrases with incredible breath control, then adds an oddity: the famous duet between Zerlina and Don Giovanni, a role he has not performed. Five Viennese operetta songs, one of which he also conducts, are delightful; there is a smile of pleasure in his voice, but not a hint of kitsch. By contrast, Tchaikovsky's "None but the Lonely Heart" is spoiled by an orchestration that is pure Hollywood. In the final Spanish group, he is on home ground and incomparable. A great introduction to the art of Placido Domingo.......2007-07-04
This is a wonderful introduction to his artistry, and shows that he can sing well across a variety of styles and eras. Let's sample some cuts:
"Il mio Tesoro" (from Mozart's Don Giovanni) is a difficult aria to sing well. And Domingo is up to the challenge. He displays a smooth and rich voice. His is one of those distinctive tenor voices, like Tucker's or Pavarotti's, that is quickly recognizable. This is, as noted, a challenging piece and Domingo handles it well, showing off considerable vocal agility in the process.
From the same opera, "La ci darem la mano," a sweet duet with, in this instance, soprano Susan Graham. This seductive work is sung well by both parties and is a ravishing version.
From Puccini's "Tosca," "Recondita armonia." At the close, his voice rises above orchestra and chorus. Overall, well and richly sung.
And now for something very different. . . The "Forging Scene" from Siegfried. One may not think of Domingo as a heldentenor, but he does a serviceable job here. His voice sometimes appears a bit light, but, overall, he does estimable work. He catches Siegfried's spirit as he forges the shattered remains of his father's sword, "Nothung." When he sings the name of his sword at the close, with the leitmotif ringing out from the orchestra, it is an affecting moment.
Then, "Celeste Aida" (from Verdi's opera). A stentorian voice well deployed to meet the challenges of this wonderful aria. Some tenors scoop as they move from those lower to the higher notes; Domingo's voice is well controlled here. The final high note is well hit.
Strauss (Junior's) "Ach, wie so herrlich zu schau'n" is a romp! A fun piece and well sung by Domingo. He demonstrates, as before, excellent vocal agility.
Lehar's "O Vaterland" is also fun. It is a sprightly tune sprightly sung.
Finally, he ends the second CD with a traditional Spanish tune--"La Golondrina." He does not overpower this work with operatic technique. He sings it well and affectingly.
So, all in all, if one wants a good introduction to Placido Domingo's vocal oeuvre, this is a very strong starting point.

He is the singular tenor who mastered every repertoire- Mozart (Don Ottavio, Tamino...unfortunately Domingo as Don Giovanni is a miscast because he is too noble and romantic and GOOD to be a bad guy)..to Puccini heros (Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca, Dick Johnson in Fanciualla Del West, Rodolfo in Boheme, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Calaf in Turandot) Verdi heroes (Radames in Aida, Don Carlos, Stiffelio, etc) to the French repertoire...Gounod (Faust, Romeo) Meyerbeer heroes, Massenet hero (Des Grieux, Le Cid) and Saint Saens (Samson) the list goes on and on. When this man dies, an era will die with him. His legend will live on because he will leave behind dozens of albums, movies and memories......

understated brilliance - awesome music for the mind.......2006-10-22
Priest = Aura is a groundbreaking album. And to back my sweeping statement, I will indulge in some explanatory remarks on a few of its songs. But first I would like to say thanks to a fellow reviewer who highlighted that the Churchs's finest moments are not classified by chart rating sucess.
Sure, they have written some very catchy (and lasting) chart busters, but they are merely an aknowledgement by the masses that this band is a truly outstanding and coherent team of artists. But as in most cases, the masses can't handle or comprehend the true masterpieces, and that's one reason why Priest = Aura is above the mentality of the average chart-tracking pseudo-fan. This is a "deep" album. Its in the same league as Pink Foyd's The Wall, NIN Fragile, or U2's Zooropa.
So to now the tracks...
Aura = Is there a quintessential Church song? Add this one to your list. Poetrey and sonic lushness without comparison. Awesome song, cleverly placed on the album. The gates to the Etherworld open....
Paradox = just listen to the words. Kilbey's doing what he does oustandingly well, walking the fine line between cliche and clever poetry.
Kings = Step aside The Edge, here comes the Koppes/Wilson-Piper duo taking guitars from where Dave Gilmour left them. Probably one of the lushest Church guitar arrangements ever. When you hear this you will realise how influential these two guys have been: this album came out '92.
Dome = Steve's subtle social comentary lyrics that on the surface sound like a side episode to Aeon Flux. A definite play again track.
Dissilusionist = one of those magic Kilbey cabaret-tale moments. This is one of those songs that i am sure Nick Cave or Tom Waits would be proud to have their name on.
Old Flame = Ever had caught up with an ex-girl/boy? Dangerous temptations summed up in a minute of music. This goes straight to the heart. And messes with yourt head.
Chaos = Falling. The kind of falling that makes you wake up from your sleep in a sudden panic. Only this fall will last 9 minutes and land you safely. Epic, of the magnitude of "Is this where you live" only darker, deeper, more mature and somehehow drifting off into deep-purple-like psychedelic mayhem, but so much classier.
Film = I am not sure what to say about this instrumental number, besides the fact that it an amazing piece of music. And it closes the album so well. I love it, and it often gets played twice. In a way its that delicious feeling the you get after watching a great movie, and you have to sit through the end credits because the music is so good!
If you are a church fan you must buy this. I was given this CD by a friend who bought it and didnt like it. After one listen I said to him "i'll take it". The Church is one of the most amazing bands in the world. Forget Elvis and the Beatles, they are more like Tom Waits and Johhny Cash, you either get it or you don't.
not an album, a trip to somewhere else.......2006-07-21
If you are lucky enough to have this cd, take my humble advice... sit back in a dark room, light a candle and close your eyes. Play this cd at a high volume, on your home system or earphones. Don't skip tracks, just let it roll out in its fullness, like a slow ocean wave. It will take You somewhere...somewhere dark, sweet, spooky and unforgettable. If you get it, it is so good. see You there

But, I'm not here to argue, I'm simply stating the otherside of the argument. Most new fans will want to start with something like "Starfish" (with "Under the Milky Way" on it), but that album is a little sterile and unfortunately suffers from the other band members singing on them. "Priest=Aura" is a determined, focused album that has all the spacey coolness of Kilbey's vocal delivery, but with warmer production values, while not being very interested in a hit single.
Tracks like the Church archetypical title track, "Dome" "The Disillusionist" and "Chaos" are all absolute classics.
It should be remembered that this album came out exactly at the moment when Nirvana made "alternative" a non-alternative catagory. There was a great purging of bands like the Church and Robyn Hitchcock who fell in the psychadelic catagory (and had no punk street cred). Its hard to imagine that in the space of a few months all those artists could go from top 5 in the college charts to ... well, without a record contract. But, they survived because they were good. Now, finally, Church fans are starting to assert clear-voiced that "Priest=Aura" is a masterpiece.
Difficult to listen to in its entirety.......2005-07-29
I just find "Priest=Aura" to be too lumbering and atmospheric, with an odd Eastern European tinge to it. Other than the breathers "Feel" and "Kings," I felt I was being almost suffocated by the music, especially by the time I reached "The Disillusionist." At about the middle of the way too lengthy "Chaos," I felt like taking off all my clothes and running straight into the ocean. In fact, I believe "Priest" would have greatly benefited if the band had omitted these last two named songs, cutting almost 16 minutes off the album, and perhaps replacing them with a 4 minute uptempo song along the lines of "Reptile." But, I do respect the other type of Church fan, and am encouraged by the fact that we can all appreciate "Hologram of Baal," which, I think, perfectly blended the two styles of The Church.
