2 out of 5 stars Heavy rock kills the subtletiesof the Fab 4.......2007-07-12

An interesting idea of largely stadium style hard rock 1980s and 1990s covers of the Beatles songs. The problem is that many just destroy the lighter touch that made the originals such great pop songs in the process, either being live (Cheap Trick and Heart) or just lacking in the energy of the originals despite a heavier sound (Jeff Healey and Thompson Twins).

The real gem is the 1967 recording by Harry Nilsson of a song cycle based around "You can't do that" - evidence of his great singing and why John Lennon rated him so highly as a vocalist - a performance that is at odds with the rest of the offerings on show here.

5 out of 5 stars I'll Be Back.......2007-02-21

Yet another Beatles cover disc, but this one doesn't suck! I got this because I used to have a 10 inch EP by Cheap Trick, which had Day Tripper on it. I just didn't remember it being live and I can't find the record, so, hence, I bought this CD. Even live Cheap Trick drives this song home. It's from the era where Cheap Trick were Gods and could do no wrong; they prove it with this track! There is only one track on this release that I don't like and that is Eleanor Rigby by Kansas. A surprize tune that is exceptional is Harry Nilsson's You Can't Do That. He blends several Beatles songs together into this track and its mesmerizing. Golden earring, Heart, the Hooters, Thompson Twins, Mahoghany Rush, and Blood, Sweat & Tears all add their mark to the glorious machine that was the Beatles. At this price, you will enjoy the CD if you like the Beatles or any of the bands with tracks here. If you want something harder I would suggest "Butchering the Beatles", which features hard rock bands doing great renditions of the Fab Four.

Need to be reminded just how singular a phenomenon the Beatles were? Take a listen to This Bird Has Flown, Razor & Tie's 40th anniversary indie-rock tribute to their second album of 1965, Rubber Soul. Tributes to other artists that aim to include songs as timeless as "Drive My Car," "Norwegian Wood," "Michelle," and "In My Life" typically have to cover their entire careers, and even then that's often not enough. This, however, is a one-album show, sequenced in the same order as the original, and the same thing could have been done with almost any other of the Beatles' LPs, with similar results. In some cases--the Donnas' "Drive My Car," Dar Williams's "You Won't See Me," Rhett Miller's "Girl"--the arrangements are a little too note-perfectly faithful to remain compelling. But a good number of the tracks here are sufficiently obscure to keep things interesting even if their arrangements do hew a little too closely to the originals. Into this category fall Yonder Mountain String Band's "Think for Yourself" and Mindy Smith's "The Word," two rarely covered songs it's a delight to hear recast in the Americana mold.

The best listens on This Bird Has Flown, however, are those that exhibit some of the experimentalism and innovation that was the mid-period Beatles' hallmark. On "If I Needed Someone," Nellie McKay turns George Harrison's Byrds pastiche into a breezy day at a Brazilian beach; Low strip "Nowhere Man" to its bones in a typically minimalist performance; the Fiery Furnaces recast "Norwegian Wood" as a keyboard-driven funhouse extravaganza; and Sufjan Stevens warbles "What Goes On" beyond recognition, taking it from country Ringo vehicle to jazzy woodwind spectacle. The disc closes with the Cowboy Junkies' "Run for Your Life": with murderous lead vocals and ominous, threatening instrumentation, it's a far cry from the slight number that weakly ended the original. Here's hoping there's a follow-up in 2006 for the 40th anniversary of Revolver. --Benjamin Lukoff

    Album Description

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' legendary album Rubber Soul, Razor & Tie Entertainment is proud to announce This Bird Has Flown: A 40th Anniversary Tribute to the Beatles' Rubber Soul. The 14-track album mirrors the sequencing of the original UK release of Rubber Soul. This Bird Has Flown features some of today's hottest artists, including Sufjan Stevens, the Fiery Furnaces, Ben Harper, Dar Williams, Mindy Smith, the Donnas, and many more. Of the importance of Rubber Soul, Allison Robertson of the Donnas commented, "They got a little more folky, they got a little more funky and more rocking...it was so different, it was like heavy and light at the same time."

The album is produced by Jim Sampas (producer of 2002's Badlands: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska). On choosing the lineup of artists on the record, Sampas stated, "As we looked toward artists we would approach, we felt they should be kindred spirits, whose gifts for singing and arranging lend themselves to these melodies and themes. Each artist on this album brought their own fascinating interpretations and have extracted new meanings from Rubber Soul."

Originally released in the United Kingdom on December 6, 1965, the George Martin-produced Rubber Soul is considered to be an extraordinarily important album in the Beatles' catalogue, the first flowering of the complex songwriting and production techniques of their later releases. The album features the now-ubiquitous songs "Nowhere Man," "Drive My Car," "Michelle," and "In My Life," among others. It held the #1 position on the British album charts for eight weeks and remained on the chart for a total of forty-two weeks. In 1966, "Michelle" won John Lennon and Paul McCartney the Grammy for Song of the Year. To date, Rubber Soul has been certified 6x platinum.

    5 out of 5 stars My goodness.......2007-01-09

I received this cd as a Christmas gift and I love it!

Important note: I have also already been listening to many of the bands that perform the cover songs on this cd and have enjoyed their music for a long time.

Which brings up an important question. Why do people perform cover songs in the first place? It is to create an interpretation of a work in their *own original style*. Therefore, you should buy a tribute album because, first and foremost, you like the bands that perform on that album.

If you want to listen to songs written by the Beatles performed by a band that sounds like the Beatles, go buy a Beatles cd!

    4 out of 5 stars It's Indie-Rock Guys...RELAX!.......2006-01-19

The Beatles have and will always be my favourite band of all times but that's not to say that I have reservations about other people covering their songs. I like hearing the different versions and this album is suppose to be different...if you like the Fiery Furnaces (and I do) then you will enjoy their rendition of Norwegian Wood (like I do) and Sufjan Steven's version is also interesting as for all the other beautiful covers. This CD is not to be interpreted or to be classified under the same type (if there ever was one) as The Beatles' music. It's Indie..it's different...and it's beautiful all the same.

    1 out of 5 stars horrible,horrible,horrible.....................2006-01-09

This cd SUCKS. I don't know what else to say. DO NOT waste your money. As a lifelong Beatles fan, and somebody who has just about every possible tribute cd to the Beatles-which numbers about 150 or so, this by far was the worst. William Shatner sounded better on his tribute album. OK, maybe I'm exagerating a little. Three or Four of the songs were OK (Drive My Car was probably the best and it was mediocre.) Save your money and buy a remastered Lennon cd or something.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2005-12-20

Why mess with perfection? I have no qualms about artists who cover the classics, but there's no connection with the Beatles' music in this CD. They just don't get it.

I bought the original when I was, well, much younger, and it sounds better all the time.

3 out of 5 stars When all is said and done...........2005-12-15

...just makes you jones for the originals. Points though, for some clever and artful re-dos, including the redoubtable Sufie Stevens, and particularly, Nellie McKay: her samba re-casting of "If I Needed Someone" really takes it to some new places.

      5 out of 5 stars Perfect combination.......2001-12-06

Growing up in the early 70s with older siblings, the Beatles defined the music of my childhood. In recent years I have found myself intoxicated by Latin rhythms such as mambo and salsa. So needlless to say, this CD brought a huge smile to my face from start to finish. I absolutely love it! But even beyond my own tastes, this is superb music. Somehow, the Latin arrangements of these Beatle tunes bring out the beauty and the passion of the original compositions in an invigorating way that is both compelling and fun. It's as if the songs were written to be played in this style. Each track features a different artist, and for the most part, they all deliver. A couple of the vocal performances fell a little short, but, overall this is a solid project. The arrangements are stunningly good and the heart and enthusiasm that went into this recording comes through vividly. And if all this isn't enough, Tito Puente is featured on a couple cuts. If you are a fan of both the Beatles and Latin music, this CD is a slam dunk. If you are familiar with one more than the other, I highly recommend expanding your musical horizons and giving this a try.

      5 out of 5 stars Bueno.......2001-04-28

My husband and I heard this at a local restaurant, and had to buy it immediately! It's a new twist on old favorites!

5 out of 5 stars an energetic tropical tribute.......2000-03-03

I simply love this CD...it is a brigde with a two way crossing. Beatlefans may find themselves exploring Latino rythms, whilst Latino music lovers may find themselves exploring the Fabs...the album carries all the flare of a Beatles fiesta...the first track "Hey Jude" pulls you in, later Celia Cruz( another leg end in her own right) does a very amusing rendition of "Obladi Oblada"...I was almost in tears of laughter when I listened to the Spanish translation..."I Wantto hold Your Hand" sung in Spanish is done as it has never been done...although almost all of the tracks are well done here...it is these 3 tracks that I never tire of listening to, time and time again...the songs are done in both Spanish & English...alot of love was poured into this excellent tribute...which would have been timelier if released now with all the Latin beats hitting the radio...the Beatles were right when they said that Latino music would be the next big thing as they rendered their own verison of "Besame Mucho"...they predicted it almost 40 years ago...as their own music became ever so eclectic embracing a wide range of styles...from India to Motown...perhaps that is why out of all the musical acts in history, it was the Beatles (los Escarabajos) that have most appealed to countless cultures...and the rich musical influence continues as Paul McCartney himself traveled recently to Cuba to further enrich himself...and I dare say he and his fellow bandmates have all enriched thwe world...que viva los Beatles para siempre...un grupo musical excelente que influenciado la musica sin discriminacion!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tribute!.......1999-10-13

This is a great interpretation of the Beatles using the Latin rhythms of salsa, bolero, and merengue. Note that the artists on this album are among the very BEST in the Latin music industry- you will not be let down by the quality of the music. Equally important is that this album is a Latin TRIBUTE to the Beatles, not an attempt to out-do them or change up songs. Even if you do not know spanish, I recommend this disc particularly because many songs are in fact sung in ENGLISH (with surprisingly decent accents!), and those in spanish still keep the same melody as the original songs. It may take you a little while to adjust to the different style of music, which sounds much livelier and full of flavor. The scores are very well put together, and a whole lot of fun. I give this disc a spirited 5 stars.

This is a great, GREAT CD. Buy it. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Very cool stuff!.......1998-08-23

I first heard this cd at the dance studio where I take ballroom dance lessons. My instructor put on the song, "No Puedes Comprarme Amor". At first, being a Beatles fan, I didn't like it, but it grew on me to the point where I sing along with enthusiasm. If you like merengue, this is a great cd to have.

Perhaps the strangest album ever recorded next to Lou Reed's machine metal music (2 vinyl discs of amplifier feedback).

The singers harmonize as well as the 5th Dimension, the Association, or Peter, Paul and Mary but the results are anything but delicious. I mean how can you make a song like Revolution or I am the Walrus ... full of gut-wrenching emotion into something with no feeling whatsoever (other than nausia)? Well, take a listen ... these guys did it!

5 out of 5 stars An unusual Beatles tribute album.......2003-01-26

I love the Beatles and their music, but I always felt that the songs were what set them apart from other groups. The diversity of tribute albums, crossing just about every genre of music, reinforces that belief. I sometimes broaden my musical horizons via Beatles tribute albums - it is a good way of trying something new which still has a base of familiarity. And so it was that I selected this CD. The first time I played it, I wasn't sure, but on the second play, I loved it.

Despite the inclusion of Yesterday, the songs are generally not the most frequently covered - Penny Lane, Revolution, Day tripper, Lady Madonna, Strawberry fields forever, Drive my car and I am the walrus are all well known, but how often do you come across covers of these songs?

The Swingle singers are made up of four men (two tenors, two bass) and four ladies (two sopranos, two altos). Their roots lie in jazz and classical music, but their a cappella style is very much their own. Classifying music is often difficult, but I wouldn't even begin to classify this. It's not the kind of music I would listen to very often, but it is one of those CD's that I choose from when I want something different to listen to.

2 out of 5 stars Ragbag collection of soul artiste covers of the Fab 4.......2007-07-12

The covers of Beatles songs being collected in LP/CD collections has produced over the years some gems of both well known covers and rare finds. This issue is sadly not one of them.

The separate Motown collection of Beatles songs by major artistes on that label showed that sometimes the Tamla magic could not work its soul spell on the UK group songs. This collection is a Rhino special and covers a variety of non-Tamla soul artists - sadly the quality is variable. Aretha (Let it be) and Wilson Pickett (Hey Jude) shine, Booker T & the MGs have done much better on their Abbey Road tribute than the cover of Michelle on show here, and some are plain embarrassing (Billy Preston on Get Back given he was on the original recording and the Bar-Kays "We can work it out").

I fear this is one of the least interesting Beatles cover collections I have heard.

50 tracks (only about 3 i dislike) of alternative rock covers of beatle songs that retain the spirit of the original songs but have enough variations to make the songs fresh. that's exactly the model of a good tribute album. most of the songs are hard enough to rock, but still pop enough stay beatle-ish.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE!!.......2007-04-15

This concert IS The Beatles NOTE FOR NOTE!!! You won't hear a single mistake! Their looks are fair, but UNIMPORTANT! It's the MUSIC, baby!! The best thing about this CD is you can hear the Beatles as they were meant to be heard in their "live" shows, but could not hear anything, because of the screaming fans.

The only thing better is to see 1964 The Tribute LIVE!! The only drawback to this CD and 1964 The Tribute, don't expect to hear any music outside of the 1963-64 era!

1964 The Tribute is the second greatest Beatle Band in the world, closely behind "The Fab Four" from S. California, who play Las Vegas regularly. But they don't have a CD for sale, so you'll have to see them live!

BUY THIS CD and BUY their other CD, "Nine Hours in November", which is a similiar, but a totally different take on the Beatles' early music, as it is a "rough, but excellent" studio takes, recorded in just 9 hours, song for song without stopping, just as the Beatles did in the early recording days. If you are expecting a note for note rendition on this one, you better buy "ALL YOU NEED IS LIVE!", instead.

BUY This CD!! and their other CD

In a word, dope. For the latino boomers who came of age during the 60`s in the barrios of America, the Beatles were considered the best in popular rock music. Almost everyone I know has at least one Uncle who was apesh*t for this group. So it was only fitting that some of the finest Salseros including Tito Puente and Celia Cruz would collaborate to produce this gem. Some of the best songs written by the Beatles are covered in this album such as, "Hey Jude" and "Let It Be", as well as songs I never really cared for but were big anyway("Can't Buy Me Love","I Want to Hold Your Hand"). A must have for those who dig the Beatles and Latin Jazz. Get it.

3 out of 5 stars Familiar tunes Latin style.......2003-11-14

One of the most interesting and challenging CD's to emerge from the tropical music bins in recent years was this tribute disc. Take some of the most recognizeable songs made famous by the Beatles, add some Latin sabor(flavor) by the heavyweights in tropical music and you have a mixed bag of songs that sometimes work . One of the problems is the inevitable comparison to the originals. Whenever the song is close to the original it fails to inspire. One such song is the classic John Lennon & Paul McCarthney number entitled "Let it Be" where Tito Nieves's English version is ok but not great. Whenever he ventures into Spanish and kicks the rhythms up a notch the song suddenly sounds invigorated and fresh. The adaptations in Spanish sound the best on this disc; the problem is there aren't enough of them. One of the highlights on this disc is the featuring of two legends who have recently left our plane of existence, Celia Cruz and Tito Puente. Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa turns in a superb performance on "Obladi, Oblada" in Spanish that is a huge reminder of her greatness. Oscar de Leon does justice to "Lady Madonna," again mostly because of the Spanish adaptation coupled with his improvisational scat singing skills. "Yesterday," the McCarthney & Lennon song, as old Paul has so requested by the courts there songs be known by in credits, is a lukewarm song that only heats up when the ending crescendoes in Spanish. "Un Gran Amor" or as it is more commonly known "And I Love her" is beautifully sung by Jose Alberto "El Canario". The closing song is a bilingual version of "Come Together" with all participants from the project joining in, led by Celia Cruz and driven on percussion by the timbales of the legendary Tito Puente. An ambitious project with mixed results is the end result of all of these artists offering a tribute album to the Beatles. The colorful cover is a take off on the "Sergeant Pepper" album and features a who's who of tropical music that includes identification in the booklet which has all the lyrics. Recommended for curious or have to have everything Beatle fanatics or especially Spanish speakers who grew up on the Beatles and fans of tropical music. Total running time is 62:45.

If you like The Beatles and enjoy tropical music, this is the CD for you! Being born in Puerto Rico and a true Beatle fan, I have enjoyed this CD tremendously. My favorites: "Hey Jude", "Come Together" (in salsa beat) and "I want to hold your hand" (in merengue beat). Put on your dancing shoes, grab your partner and dance the night away to the "Tropical Tribute to The Beatles"!
