a slow ride to iron maiden's ville?.......2007-07-08
i've been a huge fan of strung out since their first album and watched the band progress past a all the other fat wreck chords stuff that seems to all sound the same. it might be fair to say that the band's pseudo apex might have been twisted by design which combined strong guitar work and amazingly heartfelt lyrics that cut into the core of the human condition, and since there seems to be more emphasis on being a metal band than being the unclassifiable genius of twisted by design. i will defend the new ablum and their departure to a melodic metalesque punk fusion by recognizing the strength and beauty that has surfaced in the past two ablums. Exile and Blackhawks are consistently strong almost metal albums which have tons of hooks and guitar solos that could rival dragonforce on a slow day. musically these albums are strong as hell, lyrically though i miss the old days of subterranian and twisted. as a loyal fan i'll continue to listen and appreciate their direction even if its a departure of what i knew and loved.
Great Album.......2007-06-29
Strung out never makes a bad album. It was alittle different than I thought it would be, but great music is great music.....
One of the best.......2007-06-23
I have been listening to Strung Out since the early years, and this album is amazing. This album sounds like the Old school Strung Out with some f'n edge. Thank you strung out for putting out an album with some passion if I had to listen to anymore commercial punk I was going to kill myself.
Blackhawks in LA.......2007-06-22
I've been listening to Strung Out since their "Twisted by Design" cd came out and then I bought almost all of their cds and that is something to say considering that I live in Argentina, where most of my fav bands cds aren't edited, being SO one of them.
Since "Elements of Sonic Defiance", SO hasn't put out an album which could match that effort until this new record. "Blackhawks.." sounds much more better than "American Paradox" and "Exile in Oblivion" together. Their composition has gotten a lot better and this time it really feels like they have put an effort in making a true record and not just a bunch of punk-metal songs. Not only the songs sound much more better but you can also listen clearly to guitar solos and the drumming does really blow your head off.
I know that this review may go against what most of people think of this cd, but well, this is just an opinion. Don't take it personal.
Bonus Track.......2007-06-19
Anyone have ANY idea how I can get my hands on the "More than Words" bonus track? Fat Wreck's all out. Email ruckus328@aol.com.
Now onto the review....Strung out is BY FAR my favorite band so to rate any of thier albums as anything other than amazing really pains me. The reality is, this album is just ok. I would rank it as my least favorite and only a 3, maybe 4 out of 5 (That really hurts). I want to love this album but just can't. It's got some great songs, however there are many songs which lack that catchy hook I have grown to love and find myself skipping past half of the album. Best songs IMO are "Calling", "All The Nations", War Called Home", "Party In The Hills", And "Orchid". If you're a Strung Out fan, I would definately pick it up, just don't expect another Exile in Oblivion.

The name "Brian Jonestown Massacre" may seem hokey, but it accurately sums up the band's aesthetic. Their key musical reference point is late Rolling Stones member Brian Jones, and their ramshackle, self-destructive vibe is all too reminiscent of Jim Jones, the Guyana cult overlord who killed himself and his congregation with poisoned vats of Kool-Aid. Strung Out in Heaven, the band's eighth release since 1995, is a retrodelic janglefest of Altamontian proportion. Blending the smarmy, drug-addled sonics of late-'60s Stones with the chime of the Byrds, the hooks of the Animals, and the monochromatic drone of Velvet Underground within their swirl of 12-string guitars, farfisa organs, and jaded vocals, Brian Jonestown Massacre cull some of the most head-spinning moments of '60s rock into a single, unified expression. But unified is the last word you'd use to describe their interband chemistry. Since they formed, they have been through nearly 60 members, and their live shows are as likely to end in a flurry of fists as a transcendent, stupefying jam. Savor them before they self-destruct. --Jon Wiederhorn

Ragged Glory.......2007-06-26
Swirling together such influences as the Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, the Byrds, Bob Dylan, the Spacemen 3, the Monkees! and any number of groovy sixties garage bands with a pinch (lyrically) of Charlie Manson?!, "Strung Out In Heaven" is one of the Brian Jonestown Massacre's tastiest albums though not their best. Songs like "Going To Hell", "Let's Pretend It's Summer" and the country flavored "Wasting Away" are like diamonds in the rough. "Jennifer" and "Lantern" are particularly Byrds-jangly. "Got My Eye On You" and "Nothing To Lose" are pure Velvets. I love BJM but must admit that the album's charms weaken after the midway point. Maybe it's just the drugs...
Strung Out and Timeless.......2006-06-04
When I first listened to Strung Out in Heaven I liked it but I considered it my least favourite of the Brian Jonestown Albums. However over the years it has grown like some crazy forrest in my brain. It has the direction and coherence that some previous Brian Jonestown Massacre albums may have been missing. And it is a testament to the genius song writing that a catchy album like this can last. But these songs aren't just catchy pop songs, some of them are just down right beautiful. Yes beautiful, haunting calls through the halls of time.
A barely classic country-influenced indie rock album - you'll like it a lot!.......2006-01-07
The Brian Jonestown Massacre's "Strung Out In Heaven" is a classic, even if it (arguably) lacks the "wow" factor of a Radiohead or U2 album. It's just very well done. It's a great album to play in the background and also with high volume - it flows really well. Anton Newcombe's vocals aren't perfect, but they do fit the band's style well. Every track here is good, and there's even a good amount of great songs ("Going To Hell", "Wasting Away" and "Maybe Tomorrow" are some). It has a relatively good amount of appeal, though it's essentially just for indie rock fans. It also sounds a tad similar to The Verve. The instrumentation is great and the production is also crisp and clear most of the time. It sounds like country-influenced indie garage rock. What makes it "5" stars is that the lyrics are also incredibly interesting and catchy - this is definitely a bonus. It's just very pleasant - chances are you'll really like this album! Highly recommended!
Highlights include:
the entire album!
Underrated On Amazon.......2005-10-31
This record really steams, it's amazing. "jennifer" is worth the purchase price alone."got my eye on you" is outstanding. this anton character is an amazingly underrated song writer! matt hollywood and joel gion also rule my universe. and the guitar riff in "dawn" might be the best sound ever made in music. you judge for yourself but really, really love this record. now it's on to "take it from the man!"
Good, but they should have been resting..........2005-04-26
I think the BJM's music tends to be best experienced in layers, w/ repeated listens. After a few go-rounds I couldn't help thinking though that they sound a little tired on this one (not tired as in lame or unoriginal..just tired tired). But then again...I must not have been paying attention to the album title! Though it seems more like they're strung out in purgatory. One of the songs sounded like the same riff from "Not if You were the Last Dandy on Earth", but then the next time I heard it it sounded more like "Sister Ray" so I couldn't dock them any points for that. Its encouraging, that there's enough chaos in their sound-soup that new things happen when you are listening to something that is technically static. I had read later that this was their major label debut, or something to that effect, and I didn't feel like they had been particularly cheated by the industry with this disk. If you consider all of the strong albums they had released prior to this album, it is understandable that they might be a little played out by the time the industry finally took notice. With that said, it seems intriguing that they would release such a low-key album -- on their big chance, I don't detect a hint of strain in any of the songs. This may seem like a small point, but to my ears most rock bands over the last ten years or so sound like they do little else but strain. Then again maybe the BJM didn't have a choice...

No Voice of Mine.......2006-11-18
I like The rock against bush no voice of mine better.......................great album
Best Punk Album In Years.......2006-10-25
It is great when a band can evolve musically. It is even better when they can do it and not loose the hardcore edge that you love. It seems that while all the other bands are evolving and getting softer (its true, think of almost every hard band you like, they get softer with age), Strung Out is evolving and holding on to that intensity and agression that makes hardcore music great. In my opinion, this CD is the best CD to come out in years, and is Strung Out's best to date.
Perfectly Done.......2006-09-23
After going through three phases... Strung Out has come to the point where they have found their sound. They started out as an okay skate/punk band no better than others on Fat Wreck Chords at the time with their first two albums "skinny years" and "Another Day in Paradise". Then they made two excellent cds that some still consider their best, myself included as with "Twisted by Design" and "Suburban Teenage...". What came next was the transitional period where they tried to fuse punk and metal as on "Element of Sonic Defiance" and "An American Paradox"... both reletively good albums but nothing spectacular. Finally, they released "Exile In Oblivion". I knew this would be something better from the first time I heard "No Voice of Mine" on Rock Against Bush Vol. 1. It is one of those albums that grabs from the opening seconds and holds your attention through every song until ending perfectly. No filler on here though there are some songs better than others (none being anything less than 5/5). There are no other bands on the face of this Earth that sound like Strung Out which makes them all the more amazing to listen to... its kind of hard to even place them in a genre these days.
1. Analog- This song has the ability to be one of Strung Out's greatest songs ever written. It starts the album off perfectly with its eerie intro and hard hitting guitar bursts. It also has some of the best drumming and lyrics of the album.
2. Blueprint of the Fall- Continues the album moving right along with one of the catchiest songs on the album. As with the rest of the songs this also has great lyrics.
3. Katatonia- One of my personal favorites has got to be this one. It is one of the best songs to mosh to or see live. One that you cant help but scream out with or pump your fists.
4. Her Name In Blood- This song is one of the first ones you will be able to sing along to when you first hear it. It is probably the most distinct song on the album.
5. Angeldust- This slower song is a great singalong. It has great lyrics with an eerie sound and talks about things which southern californian's can relate to.
6. Lucifermotorcade- This song is usually the least liked by people at first listen. I for one, think it is very good. It is the hardest song on the album and offers a change of pace from Angel Dust
7. Vampires- Another great "ballad"... extremely catchy and one that you pick up like that.
8. No Voice Of Mine- The first song I heard off this album and still one of my favorites. This great song has the coolest overall sound to it than any other song. A classic.
9. Anna Lee- Another very catchy song with an uplifting mood to it.
10. Never Speak Again- One of the best songs Strung Out have ever written... its sound shows all of the work they evidently put into this one.
11. Skeletondanse- Actually my least favorite song on the album although still an easy 5/5 Just not as magnificent as the rest of the songs.
12. Scarlet- A Strung Out love song... you know its gonna be good.
13. Swan Dive- An awesome sound with more of the Strung Out punk feel of their older days
14. Misanthropic Principle- Definately one that will eventually become a favorite... just maybe not one you will love right off the bat.. but an awesome song and a great way to close this album.
Overall: One of the best albums to be released in years... strung outs best?? maybe
the best cd i have ever bought.......2006-05-14
it doenst get much better then this...SO is prolly the best band EVER...this cd is sooooooooooo effing good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! technical guitar, GREAT LYRICS, good vocals, and not ONE BAD SONG...NO FILLER IN HERE KIDS BUY THIS....BEST ABND EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BEST STRUNG OUT ALBUM EVER!.......2006-05-11
The title pretty much sums it up. I've been a fan of Strung Out for some time, but I was unaware of how good they really were until this album comes out. The music is outstanding in both complexity and sound. Hats off to Strung Out on this one:)

Strung Out at their best.......2006-09-17
Well, this was my first Strung Out album ever. It's probably in the top 10 albums that I own. Let me start off by saying, that this CD is just..amazing. Strung Out has always amazed me, of how they can combine melodic punk and add metal stylings. They are unique, and each album they released after just got better. Each member has something to offer. Jason has great lyrics and I do like his voice quite a bit. Rob and Jake, they can play some crazy riffs and solos, simply awesome, my favorite guitarists along with "Flipper" from Lagwagon. Jim Cherry (rest in peace) was a great bass player, and it really sucks that he had to die (oh by the way, check out Zero Down, Jim's other band, theyre awesome), and Jordan is a sick drummer, he's fast and dishes out great talent. Anyway, on to my review. I remember putting this CD in, and usually the first song on a CD i never listen to for some reason. I'll just skip to a random song, or the one that I heard before. As Jim Cherry started laying out his bassline, and then the guitar chord rang, i knew from that second this CD was going to be a good. I then heard the second song, I didnt skip it, the third song, didnt skip it, and so on. This CD, i dont have to skip any songs. Its that good. I knew only one song from Strung out, and that was "Bring out your dead" which is an all time favorite of mine. Overall, this album will get you in a good mood, its just wicked. I read a review on here of a guy listening to it while driving and he hit 120mph or so. hahaha. Well, its true, i listen to this all the time while i drive and i lose myself. Luckily there are peoples breaklights to warn me to stop at a redlight or other wise id breeze right through it, cause im too busy singing. I suggest this album to anyone who likes melodic punk, old punk, even metal, or if you just want to hear some sick music. Strung out never disappoints. I really want to see them live, but i dont think will happen any time soon, they wont come to my town. Anyway, do yourself a favor, buy this album. You'll love it.
Don't drive listening to this!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-18
This album should have a surgeon's general warning. Screw drinking and driving, listening to this while driving is about as hazardous as it gets. I didn't realize it till I got booked for doing 120, so I recommend you listen to this in a room where there aren't alot of valuables to break. By far the best Strung Out album, though I highly recommend Twisted by Design.
Best of the Best.......2006-03-27
While I love Twisted by Design and American Paradox, I always come back to this album when I think of the best work that Strung Out has to offer. This is the album that made this band. Another Day in Paradise and The Skinny Years ... were good, but sound like crap when compared to this album. I've been a punk-rocker since I was pre-teen, I've gone to shows and played in shows, and I will tell you from experience that this is what every punk band wants to sound like. Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues sounds so good you could die without having heard another punk album and be satisfied. Enough said.
A Great Punk Album.......2006-02-22
Being a pretty hardcore Strung Out fan, I was first introduced to their latest album, "Exile in Oblivion". I fell in love with the vocal stylings and mix of metal and punk in this group. After snatching up more of their older albums, I purchased "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues" and was not at all disappointed. This record is fast, edgy, and as raw as good punk gets. It's a shining example of California punk back in the mid nineties. Favorite tracks include Firecracker, Solitaire, Gearbox, Monster, Bring Out Your Dead, Somnombalance, and Wrong Side of the Tracks (THE best track on the album I think). Any fan of punk rock should make a place in their collection for STWB.
GREAT!!!!!.......2005-07-08
This is one of my all time faviorite records. I listen to lots of hardcore and punk bands. This is probably the best California punk/hardcore band from this period. This record was their fastest, and probably one of the fastest records from this time period. Very catchy, but angry. This is not poppy stuff about girls... it's harder and more raw than most of the stuff from CA at this time. This record is one i always have, if i lose it of the Cd gets scratched, i always buy it again. I would reccomend this is you enjoy fast, melodic hardcore or fast punk music from the 90's.

Surprisingly good!.......2006-11-18
I had no idea what to expect from this album. I found it while I was walking around through an electronics store looking for something to buy with the last $15 on a gift card. As a long time diehard PJ fan, I figured that I'd give it a shot, and if it wasn't good then no big deal... it wasn't my money.
I must admit that I am pleasantly surprised by this album. When I first listened to it, I laughed at nearly every song - not because they were bad, but simply because hearing string renditions of some of my favorite songs made me feel like I was meeting old friends again. The songs were different from when I first heard them years ago, but I could still recognize them, and it was really, really good to hear them.
Most of the songs are well done. I simply love "Betterman", "Daughter", "Elderly Woman", "Jeremy", "Rearviewmirror", "Corduroy" and "Evenflow". To me these are beautifully done, and seem to be poignant tributes to their namesakes. "Dissident", "Alive", "Once", and "Last Exit" are fair, and I think mainly that they don't translate that well to a string arrangement. "Go" is an insteresting choice for strings, and I'm just not convinced that it works. It's hard to capture the power of that song with a string quartet! "Given to Fly" is a disappointment, as it seems to have lost most of the original song's resonant melodies (you would assume they would be even more prevalent when arranged on strings). Finally, I was very disappointed by "Release". When I saw it on the track listing, it was the one PJ song that I was sure would be beautiful in a string arrangement. Much of the original song's ambient sound has been lost, replaced instead by individual string melodies that don't seem to even fit together.
As a whole, this album is pleasant to listen to, and I'll definitely listen to it when I need to mellow out. I'm also a classical music fan, and I can easily see this album working its way into my rotation of classical favorites. If you're a PJ fan and aren't allergic to classical music, this album is definitely worth having. If you're a PJ purist who finds classical music boring, you'll likely think this album deadens the power and verve of the songs you've come to know and love.

Album Description
Fourth full length from Strung Out proves that their brand remains unique, melding fast so-cal style punk with thick metal influenced guitars, pushed through with thunderous drums and held tight with melodic vocals. A natural progression to greatness! 2002.

Great album.......2006-05-11
Great album! They get better every time I hear them! I like their two newer albums a bit more, but all the same this one is deffinatly worth the money!
Yeah what the guy below me said.......2005-07-10
First off, Strung Out is my favorite band due to excellent and meaningfull lyrics and because of the phenominal harmony they bring out of their instruments , including the singing. This CD lives up to their reputation.
Excellent.......2004-07-23
J'ai surtout découvert Strung Out avec ce disque. Vraiment bon! J'aime toutes les tounes sans exception! Mais il pourrait y en avoir un peu plus...
Strung Out Strings Out Their Best Riffs!.......2004-04-14
I was first introduced to this CD on a Fat Wreck/Honest Don's compilation CD that included the awesome punky "Kill Your Scene." A few months later, I bought the whole CD of "American Paradox" on eBay, and when I listened to it, I realized that many of my favorite bands' sounds were skillfully molded into some quality power-punk/hard rock! The sounds of Thrice, Senses Fail, and even hard rockers Chevelle have all been melted into the diverse sound that makes up Strung Out today. Some songs
like "Alien Amplifier," remind me of what I would call a "hard rock ballad" with some punk influences. "Lubricating the Revolution" is a great song that hints back to the days of "Another Day in Paradise," and reminds me of Senses Fail but with some harder rocking guitars. This CD is definately for fans with diverse musical tastes, because it doesn't get pigeonholed into only one style. Highly recommended, this CD shows that the band's sound has matured greatly in the 10 years this amazing band has been together.
Way over rated here.......2003-12-24
This is the album that should not have been. The last EP was supposed to have more songs on it and actually be a full length album, but it was bootlegged so they decided to release it as a EP instead. American Paradox sounds like the left overs from the The Elements of Sonic Defiance sessions. They needed to put something out so they rushed this. If you see them live, they only play one or two songs from this album. Buy Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues or Twisted by Design instead.

A punk rock opus.......2006-09-16
This album is a real and honestly beautiful work of art. The tracks take you on an the emotional trip through thoughts and feelings that are so real that they strike a nerve. The first song is almost an invocation to the muse of being twenty-something and confused. It then then travails through an analysis of one's mental state and interpersonal relationships, climactically ending with a break up ballad. This is truely one of the best punk rock concept albums since Husker Du's Zen Arcade.
Good punk record.......2005-12-08
I have heard a lot of punk records from this period and i must say that this band is for real. I haven't heard any other of their releases, but this one is seriously one of the best punk records I have ever heard (I have an extensive backround in the roots of punk rock). This came out right before punk became "pop" which I have a feeling will never change in my lifetime, which is a shame because most of the kids who listen to "punk" these days don't have any clue what real punk rock is. This is the end of a dying generation, so get it while it is still available. For those of you who look for singles, in my opinion the first three tracks are worth the price of the cd alone and the last two tracks make this album unforgettable.
I like this album. Or do I?.......2005-10-20
I remember listening to this record like 5 years ago and telling myself this kicks some serious ass. And even to this day I still rock out to it every now and again. Songs like 'match book' and probably my personal favorite strung out song 'deville', don't f*ck around, nor does this punk and metal fusion called 'Twisted by design'. It's more metal than their earlier stuff and less metal than their later stuff. I personally prefer the punk side of Strung Out and if it wasn't for Suburban.... this would be my favorite Strung out album.
totally awesome and flawless album.......2005-01-08
Owning all of Strung Out's albums (all of which are good bordering on excellent) i can honestly say that TBD is the most complete and best of them all. It is in fact the finest example of fast/well consructed and brilliantly played punk music that is out there (with the drum work of Jordan just simply beyond compare or description--the man is the ultimate drummer EVER).As soon as the opening bars of Too Close To See burst from the speakers it is a real white knuckle adrenaline ride through all that makes Punk the greatest form of music out there---drumming that is totally phenomenal, searing dual guitar work, solid bass from the late great Jim Cherry, all topped off by the crisp/spot-on vocals of big Jason Cruz (a recipe that is without compare--with only prime-time Joey Cape inspired Lagwagon coming even close). Tracks; well every one has it's own merits but i would say that the opening three tracks are ballistic (Too close To See, Exhumation Of V.Madison & Deville), following up with the speedy/tightly melodic Crossroads and with the final two tracks(Just Like Me & Match Book) being the fitting finale to this absolute masterpiece of music. I have had this record for 3/4 years and it never stays off my stereo / car CD player for longer than about 2 weeks ( and i have a collection of 350/400 punk/metal albums to select from). If you havent got a Strung Out album i have 2 recommendations; 1) GET ONE NOW (they are the best band EVER); 2) Start with this one (ultimate punk CD) and follow up swiftly with Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues--which is almost as superb as TBD.
Just buy this record ASAP and pay homage to the gods of fast punk
(and then catch them live for the finest show you will see)-i can guarantee you won't be disappointed.
SO Owns You........2003-10-16

Mixed bag.......2007-04-15
I'm a fairly new Radiohead convert, and a long time violinist (no great shakes, but I can hold my own in a quartet), so this seemed like the perfect marriage to me. Mostly, I'm enjoying the album, but I wonder at some of the arranging choices. "Let Down" in particular inspired me to come and review the album; I like the other tracks a lot, but "Let Down" is such a rich, full song on the album that I was expecting something similar, or perhaps even better, on the quartet album. Unfortunately, the choice to use pizzicato for the accompanying rhythm just doesn't do it for me -- it sounds sterile to me; if I were doing it myself (and I admit, I don't have the abilities to do so, really), I would have bowed that portion, or arpeggios, or something that better fit the mood of the song. "Karma Police", on the other hand, works really well, as do "Airbag", "Subterranean Homesick Alien", "Electioneering", and "The Tourist". I like "Fitter, Happier" and "Climbing up the walls" better on this album than the originals (blasphemy!), and "Lucky" is pretty darned good, too.
Overall, I would certainly recommend the album to classical-only types who would like to branch out a little, or Radiohead fans who also enjoy classical music, or parents who've gotten a little tired of the "Baby Rock" versions of these songs, but still want something the kids can also listen to at bedtime. I've been vacillating between 4 and 5 stars, and given that "Let Down" was the only song that was (forgive me!) a real let down, I decided 5 was appropriate.
Now, can anyone tell me where to get the sheet music for these so I can try them out with my quartet?
SQ to Radiohead.......2007-03-14
I loved it, husband (die-hard Radiohead fan) did not. He says there is nothing like the original. I'm a dancer and just love string quartets, so I can see where he is coming from.
music to my ears.......2006-12-12
All I can really say is that the music on this cd is beautiful. I love the original Radiohead version, but I quite honestly like this one more. They managed to capture the feel and sound of Radiohead so well, and I think some of the songs sound even better on strings. I personally loved Let Down on the string version; I never cared that much about that one that on the regular version. I really don't understand how anyone can not like this album. Even if you are a big Radiohead fan and you don't feel this cd quite measures up to the original, it is still gorgeous in it's own right. The flow and mood is usually right on, and I just get lost in it.
As much as I have gushed about this cd, I usually don't even like classical versions of pop/rock/whatever music. They almost always fall way short by not capturing the mood, or being very poorly arranged. Groups like Apocalytica are an example of ones that I don't like--having a cello quartet doesn't really work for a lot of the songs they do because it doesn't allow for hardly any range in sound. It usually just sounds like a big mess. There are many others that I have been sorely disappointed with, as well, but I will not go into them right now.
Oh, get off your high horses..........2006-01-14
*chuckle* You negative reviewers are funny. So negative. I feel bad for you guys. It's ok, though. I guess you can't avoid such hostile reviews. *Patting you on the back* Everything's gonna be alright. Anyhoo...
This album is great. Yes, it has its flaws, but they are minimal. Radiohead is one of the greatest bands ever, and I can't blame this quartet for not getting it exactly right. But I applaud them for their efforts. Their work is very impressive, considering how complex Radiohead's music is... a successful attempt, I'd say. You have to keep in mind that this is Radiohead's music we're talking about... and these people have a set of 4 string instruments (nothing more, nothing less)... 4 STRING INSTRUMENTS! RADIOHEAD'S music! A great task, no? The end result? I say: *clap clap clap* "Good job, guys!"
OK, nuff blabbering. Here's my actual review for the album itself...
What NOT to expect from this album: A complex rendition. Leave that to Mr. Christopher O'Riley (which I think you should pick up, btw). Brad Mehldau does a pretty good job as well.
What to expect from this album: A simple rendition. What it does is... it takes the basics of Radiohead's OK Computer and plays them out on 4 string instruments. Simple as that.
Standout track: Exit Music (For A Film)
Some advice: As w/all music, listen w/an open mind. Not all renditions of Radiohead's music have to be super complex and crazy like O'Riley's, Mehldau's, n such. (Btw, yes, I know that they are both 'one pianist w/one piano' but both of their styles are different. They have their own renditions. And this, my dear friends, is a string quartet's rendition. And as I'm sure you all know, a piano is very different compared to the strings, anyway). Also, a part of being open-minded involves listening to the tracks all the way through. Give it a try... you might just be surprised.
Simply put: Overall, this album is pretty simple... but pretty.
And to the negative reviewers (especially to the one's who gave one star): Sorry to hear that this album made your guys' ears bleed. In all seriousness, though, I wonder what you'd think of Jonny Greenwood's Bodysong? Not in comparison to this, but in isolation. In its greatness, complexity and simplicity hold hands. Let's do that.
Awful.......2005-11-21
I bought this CD without really knowing what to expect. I'm a classically trained musician, so it was my hope that this album would succeed in capturing the essence successfully. I was hoping it'd line up with the good portion of Chris O'Riley's arrangements, but unfortunately I was let down on both counts.
What it came down to was a performance that lacks all of the colour and nuance that's present in the original Radiohead album. For one, the arrangements sound like someone took the OK Computer piano book from a music store and dished out parts...very simple arrangements. Listen to Chris O'Riley (although they're sometimes too complex) or even Canadian Brass play Beatles.
Two: All I heard were mono-dynamic performances of very dynamic music. Everything was the same volume!
Three: Tuning was an issue sometimes (although I'm sure that sometimes it was trying to imitate Radiohead's pitch bending.
Four: The string quartet as a medium lacks the colours necessary to pull across the many colours that exist in each section of radiohead! Maybe this can be solved with better arrangement.
In short, this album was awful and I would strongly discourage anyone from buying it. I listened up to Karma Police before I got angry, turned it off and put on Kid A to cleanse my ears.
Definitely stay away from this!

Different Perspective.......2006-07-13
Vitamin records has been releasing these cd's like wild fires, just spreading orchestral music to the lesser audience of it. This cd will give you the rock music that originally started this who phenomenon (apocalyptica).
This cd is great for anyone interested in hearing the depth of a music genre. Typically when you hear a rock song, you dont hear really how the singer is supposed to influence the musical sense of the songs, but when the singer's role is put into a more balanced/equal role with the rest of the musicians, it contributes so much more to the musicality of the song. It is great for beginner musicians to understand that the singer has to be in tune with the band because he is added depth to the music, not just vocals. College music majors might also get a kick out of this album as it widens your music perspective.
These cds from vitamin really show how rock is the next evolution to classical music, it shows that although lyrics were originally added, the artists used the basic form of classical music to write songs. They all contain a theme that is repeated in the music, and most offer a "waltz" part to the song, as well as a lyrical bridge.
Good cd for every so often to change you from the norm. really neat to switch out the lyrics every so often with some classical music. Enjoy it!
Not Much To Warrant Repeated Listenings.......2005-01-30
Over the past five years, Vitamin Records has released more than fifty of these String Quartet Tribute albums. They have run the gamut from Metallica to Clay Aiken to Alison Krauss to their most recent tribute to 2Pac. This sampler focuses primarily on alternative/heavy metal/grunge artists. So what you get is a collection of songs made famous by Staind ("It's Been Awhile"), Linkin Park ("In the End") and Korn ("Freak on a Leash").
This album (and all of the others) veers awfully close to novelty status. On first listen, it's a real charge to hear teen angst anthems like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" transformed into sedate chamber music. But it doesn't really warrant repeated listenings. The main problem is that after a few songs, they all tend to sound alike. Twenty years ago, the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet would include a Jimi Hendrix composition in live performances and the occasional recording, but they had the sense to know that this wouldn't work over the course of an entire album.
And the idea of juxtaposing classical instruments with popular music goes back even farther. In the sixties, the Hollyridge Strings released a series of albums performing the works of the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys. Bottom line? This album will force you to hear these songs in a new way and might get a laugh or two if you slip it into the CD player at your next party, but there's little here to make you come back after you've heard it once. But at $6.98, it's an inexpensive gag gift for the alternative music fan in your life. [Running Time - 50:37]

If you are are a Panic! fan..............2007-04-30
Then you will love this.
I am a lover of Classical and Alternative music, so finding this tribute for one of my fave bands was probably the best thing that could have ever happened to me.
It's amazing how this string quartet can capture the essence of the songs that Panic! originally brought to it, and keep it a masterpiece.
I would suggest this to any music freak/ music appreciation scholar out there.
"We are unable to continue our broadcast of dancing music".......2007-01-22
This is one of my favourite string quartet tribute albums, and perhaps the only one I own that I consider better than the original album. "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage" is superb, "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" follows the melody better than its forerunner, and "Time to Dance" has, to my ear, only one tiny falter.
"Intermission" did not disappoint!
Good, but could have been Greater.......2006-12-20
A nice effort, performing the entire album on string instruments. But it lacked a certain depth of flavour that could have been much better accomplished with a full orchestra. It does sound good, but it just feels like something is missing.
pretty awesome.......2006-07-24
I admit I love stringed instruments and so am already a fan of cool instrumental stuff, but this one on Panic! is so awesome I find myself getting the chills listening to each song.
