5 out of 5 stars what a flashback!.......2007-07-15

I thought I was the only person on the planet that remembered Rodriquez - Cold Fact! I do a web search and lo and behold, there's a cult following for him. Strangely enough the cult following was in SA (where I heard him) and Australia. I heard him (and even remember the album cover) back in high school over 30 years ago and remembered the one track "I Wonder", yet I don't remember what I had for lunch! I went to school near Durban, SA and the album floated around at parties and such. His haunting music has stayed with me ever since, I will be buying Cold Fact now!

5 out of 5 stars AAAAAAH, The 70's.......2007-04-03

I must have bought 10 copies of this album when it first came out. I gave most of them to my friends, so many in fact that I don't own a copy myself. I was the music freek (nut!!) amongst my friends and since I thought that Bob Wills or Jimmy Reed would have been a bit much for them, I played Cold Fact. Since I couldn't be bothered bringing the album to their houses each weekend, I bought them copies and left them there. Every time we gathered for a Fri/Sat night out we would put on Rodriquez, toke up, have a few drinks, eat pistachio nuts and groove to "Sugar Man" et al. I have to admit I haven't heard this album for over 25 years but I can still sing the words to nearly every song!!!! I am amazed that this album had such a small audience; mainly in Australia and Sth Africa, as it is an iconic release. Australia had an extemely vibrant Pop music scene in the 70's thanks to Ian "Molly" Meldrum and his popular Countdown TV show. Along with Rodriguez, Countdown broke ABBA, which is a good or bad thing depending on one's perspective. If anyone out there, in a moment of madness, wants to find out what the average!! Aussie music buff was getting off on in the early 70's grab a copy of a Rodriguez album and see how off the planet we really were.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-12-22

Previous reviewers have said everything already! This album was recommended to me by Pandora on a Dylan radio station, suggesting I'd like this if I like Dylan... and sure they know their stuff!

5 out of 5 stars commentary in poetry.......2006-04-06

First released in 1970, this album is a commentary in the tradition of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan but with a style and vibe of it's very own.
Each song is something original and new in itself but running through it is a theme of drugs : "Dancing Rosemary, disappearing sister Ruth
It's just your yellow appetite
that has you choking on the truth
You gave in, you gave out, outlived your dream of youth "

social alienation : "Now you sit there thinking feeling insecure
The mocking court jester claims there is no proven cure
Go back to your chamber, your eyes upon the wall
'Cos you got no one to listen, you got no one to call"

, cynicism and angry condemmnation of the corrupt materialism of the wealthy : "And don't try to enchant me with your manner of dress
'Cos a monkey in silk is a monkey no less
So measure for measure reflect on my said "

And a focus on the plight of the poor: "The ladies on my street
Aren't there for their health
Welfare checks don't pave
The road to much wealth. "

Rodriguez never was a star in the USA but had a massive following in South Africa, Zimbabwe , Australia and New Zealand.

My personal favourites are: "CRUCIFY YOUR MIND " , "I WONDER" "LIKE JANIS" and "JANE S. PIDDY".

If you enjoy the genius Leonard Cohen you will want to sample Rodriguez.

5 out of 5 stars Discovered Rodriguez in Mozambique.......2006-01-28

I was in the Peace Corps in Malawi in the mid-90s, was hitching through Mozambique with a couple of other volunteers in the spring of '95, just after the war. The only other "mzungus" we saw the whole time there was this South African couple we met in a restuarant in Nampula who invited us to stay at their house on the beach. They were working there to rebuild the roads and put on this album while we were hanging out that night. It floored me immediately.

I asked who it was and the guy looked at me oddly and said "Rodriguez, he's AMERICAN" as if he thought I was a nutter for never having heard of the guy. And he was right. The next time I was in SA for holiday I snapped it right up.

Listening to it right now. If he tours here I would go in a heart beat. His songs definitely have a Dylan quality to them as many have mentioned, but his voice reminds me a Jim Croche. You won't regret buying this album.

I am now a SAHM, living in the 'burbs, my 1.5 year son is playing with the CD cover right now. My how times change, but when I put on this album I am a wandering 20something, saving the world and hitchhiking through southern africa, where ever the ride takes us. I am RIGHT THERE.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars And His Best Is Pretty Damned Good.......2005-11-30

That ought to be four and a half stars, actually, but sadly such subtleties are impossible here. In any case, the brevity of most of the other reviews on this page speaks volumes about the brief and obscure nature of Jesus (Sixto) Rodriguez's recording career. Two largely ignored LPS at the very start of the seventies (the first of which, COLD FACT, has been reissued on CD) were later pared down still further into this compilation for release in Australia and other lands where the American singer/songwriter's name is not completely unknown. The quality of the material, however, shines right through the mist, making both AT HIS BEST and COLD FACT more than worthwhile additions to the collection of anyone, anywhere, with an interest in the folk/pop/rock nexus which so dominated the early seventies music charts.
In its forty minutes, AT HIS BEST covers a fair bit of musical terrain, pairing gritty and surprisingly intelligent social commentary with arrangements that hint at mainstream pop, pseudoclassical sentiment, Latin groove and folk minimalism. The lack of liner notes is rather frustrating, as we're left to wonder just who else was involved here and how; but then again, the mystery of the whole thing does add to its already-considerable appeal.
Though his take on the singer/songwriter oeuvre is quirky and distinctive, Rodriguez basically falls into the post-Dylan school of his era, his melodies spare and catchy, his lyrics at once ruminative and caustic. AT HIS BEST opens with a tuneful and slightly cynical self-projection into the New Testament, "Crucify Your Mind," then offers us a wailing hymn to a dope peddler, "Sugar Man." Both showcase Rodriguez's gifts as a songsmith and vocalist, and both manage (as does the material in general) to slip in and out of the dated. "Sandrevan Lullabye" is where things start to get unsparing, with the longer running time giving the singer a chance to catalogue the modern American sorrows of 1970 - which are, of course, still fully relevant thirty-five years later. The pleasant, loping melodies of "Inner City Blues," "Can't Get Away," "I'll Slip Away," "I Wonder" and "Street Boy" bring a slightly brighter and poppier sensibility to their essentially minor-keyed tales of urban blight and failed love, and all would have made quite passable singles. Perhaps the highlight of the whole collection, however, is "Cause," a wrenching five-and-a-half-minute indictment of contemporary society written and sung in a manner worthy of, and perhaps even darker than, Dylan or Neil Young at around the same time. "Jane S. Piddy" is a nice breezy folk-rocker, and "Establishment Blues," as its title suggests, brings things to a close with the same admixture of whimsy and woe that so distinguishes the album as a whole.
Whether the lack of material under Rodriguez's name is the reason for his obscurity or vice versa, what little we have available serves as a poignant reminder of the accidence of fame. No doubt about it, musicians of lesser talent were selling a lot more records than this guy even in the more artistically-minded days of 1970. But ironically, the very obscurity of the singer and his small body of work is no small part of its pleasure. Were AT HIS BEST a remastered compendium drawn from a dozen albums released over fifteen or twenty years to varying levels of artistic and commercial success, one could never approach it with the ever-fresh perspective and sense of wonder that is so refreshingly possible here; and that makes listening to Rodriguez, wherever one may choose to place him within or without the rock music pantheon, in some respects a more rewarding and personal experience than merely reexamining that pantheon for the umpteenth inevitable time.

5 out of 5 stars I wonder (why!).......2005-11-22

I am from Canada and I discovered Rodriguez during a business trip in South Africa. Turns out he is an American singer totally unknown in his own country, but HUGE in South Africa and Australia...

It is a mystery why his music has never made its way in North America. IT IS SO GOOD! Anybody will love "I wonder" the first time they hear it, but so many beautiful songs are on this album. You gotta buy it, really. If you love Dylan or Jim Croce, it is impossible that you do not love Rodriguez.

5 out of 5 stars A mysterious classic.......2004-02-09

It is often the case that the best artists, teachers, poets and musicians go unnoticed by the masses. This may be because they are visionary and perhaps not into self promotion. They paint, teach, write and perform simply for those who they love and who love and appreciate them. Rodriguez is one of those shining examples and At His Best is a compilation of eleven of his amazing repertoire.
When I first heard his voice in Australia in the early 80's, I was drawn in. His lyrics often address the darkness of American society as well as celebrate love and the lightness of being. Let this man's kind clear voice and take you back, forward and make the present one of sublime joy. I recommend his earlier and even lesser known "After the Fact" CD which is available at One World.com in South Africa. The recording is not as polished but the songs are oh so sweet. I like best kept secrets and I also hope more people come to know the brilliance of Jesus Rodriguez.

5 out of 5 stars awesome cd.......2001-08-16

it is true that this is one of the alltime best folk/rock albums ever, his lyrics are amazing and composition incredibly original. I highly recommend this album to anyone who is a Dyllan lover.

5 out of 5 stars pure genious.......1999-12-20

quite simply this album would be one of the best I have heard. Lyrics, orchestraion, arrangement is just amazing. This man is just to good to be missed. It is such a shame that for so many years he has gone by unnoticed by so many. People talk of Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and so on, obviously that haven't listened to this album. "Stunning" is inadequate phrase to use. Simply listen and be enlightened to to one of the worlds premier talents."At His Best" is precisely that, THE BEST!

Album Description

The Coro Hispano present an exciting program including one of the most popular works of the Latin American choral repertoire, Ariel Ramírez's Misa Criolla. Since its composition, the Misa has been a showpiece for choirs around the world. The popular Misa is joined by the engaging Christmas cycle, Navidad Nuestra. Rounding out the program is a lively set of Argentine folksongs, harmonized and arranged for mixed choir by the contemporary composer, Oscar Sixto Bareilles.

5 out of 5 stars Missa Criolla.......2004-12-21

I had the privilege of hearing the Coro Hispanico perform this in the Mission Dolores Basilica in 2000. It was sublime. This recording is an accurate representation of the power of this choiral group and is a must-have of very powerfully emotional music. The Coro Hispanico is a San Francisco treasure.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a hidden treasure.......2001-12-23

This music is truly touching. Ariel Ramirez was brilliant in writing it, Juan Pedro Gaffney was inspired with his interpretation and direction of it and the Coro Hispano de San Francisco's singing is powerful and emotional. I don't normally listen to music of this genre, but this CD goes down as one of my all time favorites. It's beautiful from beginning to end, every track. Whatever kind of music you prefer, you owe yourself a listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredibly Moving Performance.......2001-10-06

I own a version of Misa Criolla by Ramirez with Carreras as the tenor. Although I like his rendition of Misa Criolla, the rest of the piece was not involving and I didn't care for the music. This performance completely blew me away. There is a level of involvement with the musicians that is absolutely wonderful. The recording is beautifully done with great intimacy and a marvelous ability to convey the emotion of the performance.
