ITALIAN LISTENER.......2007-07-16
Terrific!.......2007-05-30
So-So CD.......2007-04-06
Great dinner background music.
This CD will put you to sleep.......2007-02-26
While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.
Could have gone to the library for this one.
Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.
Mi piace davvero!.......2007-02-20

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.
What can you say - it's Segovia!.......2007-02-10

Here great notebook of the music she enjoyed immensely so we can as well.
Especially fond of harpsichord music, this has marvelous selection of that, but fond of Rondeau in B-flat major. Minuet in G major is one of my favorites. New to me are the Arias, especially "Bist du bei mir" and ""Ich habe genug". If you're not conversant in German, do go on the website the liner notes provides and get the translation in English for these are marvelous testimonies of their faith in words and song.

"You're the gas man, find the gas tank!".......2005-06-14
The non-re-release of this album for many years was due primarily to the politically charged punchline of the title track routine. Cosby, a sports car fanatic, relays the story of a specially built 427 twin Paxton Cobra, which, when simply idling, scares the crap out of Coz. Looking for a car that was "faster than anything Steve McQueen owns", a dishevelled Cosby tells the carmaker to give the fully paid car to George Wallace (former Governor of Alabama in 1962 - and again in 1970 - and a hard-line segregationalist who tried a run for the presidency in 1968).
With the release of "200 MPH" and "It's True! It's True!" in March 2005, Cosby's legendary 60's WB catalogue is now completely available. "200 MPH" made the P2P circuit for years on sites like Kazaa, which may also have had an effect on the decision to release this album, out of print on vinyl for over 35 years, and only available on cassette until recently.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

SCENE: Record producer's office.
RECORD PRODUCER: Mr. Jones, we've been expecting you. Sit down.
JIM JONES: Alrighty then, what's this all about?
RECORD PRODUCER: Okay, your last album, "Hustler's P.O.M.E. (Product Of My Environment)" was recently certified 10x Bronze by the RIAA. Over ten million copies were returned.
JIM JONES: But dat album didn't sell ten million copies, which means...Oh man.
RECORD PRODUCER: It doesn't matter anyway, because rap is no longer a fad. It has been killed by the most recent genre, jazz rock, which actually requires talent, so you're out of here.
SCENE: One of New York City's McDonalds. Jim Jones is now an employee.
50 CENT: Wuzzup homie! Welcome to the life of fast food.
JIM JONES: Look Fiddy, how did I end up working at McDonalds? The record producer said something about jazz rock and something called TALENT being popular now, so what's going on, dawg?
50 CENT: Simple. When this new genre, jazz rock, became a fad, everyone was impressed, as it was so unique, talented, and fresh, so in a couple of days, the ENTIRE mainstream beforehand - pop, rap, R&B, emo, and radio-rock - was killed. Now dose hataz at da record company won't hire anybody that would be part of those genres.
JIM JONES: So I gotta be parta dose new genres. Sweet - whoops, I forgot, I have no talent.
50 CENT: Nor do I, which is why we'z at Mickey D's. Alright, you (Jim Jones) - change the fries. I gotta help Snoop Dogg wit da grill and Jay-Z wit da drive thru.
JIM JONES: Dis sucks!!
Unfortunately, this probably won't ever happen. Judging on how long this garbage has been popular and the fact that everyone's IQ's are lower than their shoe sizes, this garbage will continue to sell. This sucks.
PS, I know I sound alot like Eggplant, but all of this is true.
As The Trend Continues (Rating: 4 out of 10- -2 stars).......2007-02-16
If anything I found positive was the overplayed first single "We Fly High". You know the situation where you hear a song so many times, you begin to like it out of the blue. That might explain how I liked the first single on this album. Everything else is straight garbage.
So there we have it. Another wasteful Dip Set release. Only people who say they that this album is good are either from New York, or were born somewhere in the early 90's. Point blank, I recommend that you stay away from this overpriced drink coaster, plain and simple. Jim Jones saw how his first two albums flopped, and decided to go the gimmic route, which explains how his first single blew up. If Cam'ron's "Killa Season" was the worst from Dip Set in '06, "Hustler's P.O.M.E." sure as hell gave it a run for it's money.

For some hip-hop fans being hard core means snarling on cue or adopting the thug pose of the week in order to impress the heads and scare the kids. True fans of the rugged know that such machinations may translate into pop success, but those hits often come at the expense of the hard-earned cred that rappers live and die for. M.O.P are far from household names, and even though they might offer in interviews that they would like to, if not grab the brass ring, at least touch it, you get the feeling that being grimy underground heroes suits this revered Brooklyn duo just fine. Protégés of the always superlative DJ Premier, M.O.P's bite is bracing and fierce, and even when the duo aims for some accessibility (à la their raw but hook-laden single "Ante Up" or working with R&B duo Product G&B on "Everyday") their sound and stance is still unrefined and unrelenting. Warriorz might be the Brownsville champions' most commercially accessible offering, but if you're looking for sing-a-long melodies and rent-a-roughneck drama, look elsewhere. Even when these guys play nice they still can't play by the rules, which means that the faithful will be happy indeed. --Amy LindenCustomer Reviews:
"I'll give you four words: Don't f... with me!".......2007-04-22
After the intro, the album kicks in with the excellent "Welcome to Brownsville." This lyrically menacing, hometown proud song has a great guitar-laced beat. "Everyday" has a little R&B influence in the hook, with an appearance by Product G. I like it because they deliver some deeper rhymes with some lighter production than usual while still maintaining their decidedly hardcore stance. The first classic of the album follows, the inescapable "Ante Up." This song is a true anthem, a fist-pumping banger with an aggressive horn-driven beat, and Fame and Billy kick some of their most energetic rhymes ever. The inspiring "Face Off" follows, which is more like two short songs on one track. The title track is truly awesome, another anthem in the vein of "Ante Up." The driving horns and vocal sample are excellent, and this is one of the duo's finest tracks. "G-Building" is nice but not one of "Warriorz"'s more memorable songs. On "Old Timerz," M.O.P. reminisces over growing up and pays respect to the veterans of the hood and hip hop. "On the Front Line" is standard hardcore M.O.P., displaying their incredible lyrical dexterity and ear for a great musical backing. "Nig-Gotiate" and "Follow Instructions" are both driven by catchier, horn heavy productions. After the decent "Calm Down" comes the head-bobbing "Power," with a horn fanfare and joyfully angry verses. Another ode to their home borough of Brooklyn is "Home Sweet Home," but this one is set apart with a solid Premo beat. The good "Background N....s" precedes my favorite song, "Cold as Ice." This song has my favorite beat, with a nice keyboard line, and the sample from a Foreigner song is perfect, it's really creative and unique sounding. The album ends on a good note with three solid tracks, "Operation Lockdown," "Roll Call," and "Foundation."
This album showcases M.O.P. at their peak, both creatively and commercially. At this point, they had perfected their unique sound to a science, and lyrically and musically it shows. This is the perfect kind of pump-up music for the locker room or gym, but it's also great for just playing in the car. Those who like "Warriorz" should also check out their first three albums, To the Death, Firing Squad, and First Family 4 Life.

Not the P.M. Dawn "Best Of" I would put together but............2004-04-27
So many would be "hits" are left off this CD. I would spend my money on their other CD's and compose your own "best Of". The beauty and intelligence of thhis band is unique and is now missing from today's bands. On the track Downtown Venus they sample the drum beat to Hush by Deep Purple and turn it into an incredible funky song. No one wlse these day is doing that. Also on the CD, Jesus Wept the song 9:45 wake-up dream was left of this compilation. This song is just pure magic.
I miss P.M. Dawn and hope they get together again for more magical moments in music.
