At heart a safe if emotive and catchy middle-of-the-road rock band, Collective Soul up the prescription on Dosage, turning in an 11-song collection that stretches previous aural boundaries with mixed results. The Southern-bred quintet is literary in its lyrical leanings and thoughtful in its deft and dynamic pop-rock songcraft. Programming and keyboards are now part of the group's arsenal. Dosage's production, meanwhile, is handled by singer-guitarist Ed Roland and is exceedingly lively and crisp. The collection is more loose, experimental and modern--and less classic-rock-leaning--than Collective Soul's two previous albums. There's nothing quite in the vein of "Shine" or "Precious Declaration," two memorable, high-impact singles from the band's first two sets, though "Generate," "Heavy," and "Crown" are standouts. Ultimately, Dosage is a cohesive collection of strong songs and a smart step up for the band. It just may insure survival for a group where others of a similar musical ilk--such as Brother Cane and Cry of Love--have floundered. --Katherine Turman
Customer Reviews:
Another excellent CS album.......2007-06-29
I love this CD. I love all their CDs - get them ALL!!!!!
Sometimes a song will sound weird at the beginning but you really need to give the whole song a shot. They always make excellent music.
They are also excellent live!
Good.......2007-06-18
If you like any of Collective Soul's other stuff you won't be disappointed with this one.
Good and solid.......2007-01-18
Very good CD, enjoy nearly all of the songs. If you want listen to a solid rock CD while doing your college essays, this would be it - tranquil enough to concentrate, rocks enough to get you going.
Dosage-COLLECTIVE SOUL.......2006-07-31
I hardly know where to begin, this is a great album. Being the first Collective Soul album I bought this has really influenced my choice of music-even to this day. An overwwlming mixture of fever pitch and harmonies, from dazzle to knock out in a second, you just cannot say enough positive things about this album. The beauty of this album is that it flows nicely thorough the songs. Local radio stationd play songs from this album and many other Collective Soul albums, so I think you will be surprised by the number of songs that you've heard before. This CD is the best possible introduction to Collective Soul that you can get. SO BUY IT NOW! -Sherman.
Very upbeat music.......2006-03-14
The music on this album ends up making you feel good about life. Not very often can you get good music that makes you have a positive outlook on life, but Dosage does, and does it while being good musically also. There is a good balance of slow and fast songs on the album, some using acoustic guitar and some using electric. But the songs never really get less catchy or fun to listen to, no matter how far the distortion is up or down. Good listen, and recommended.
Favorite song: Run

Customer Reviews:
the concert made up for it.......2000-01-30
i'll have to admit, the first time i heard "heavy," i was bouncing off the walls. these guys are my favorite band, and the riffs, and distortion in "heavy" rocked! the rest of the album is a bit different than their other stuff. i didn't like it at first, but when i went to their concert last september, i changed my mind. they're so together, and awesome in concert. give the album a chance, and then go to the concert and you'll be a happy camper.
A great dose of rock.......1999-12-07
I love Dosage. It is a fine CD with a balance that is lacking in the rock scene today. The distortion loaded tracks of Tremble For My Beloved, No More No Less, and Slow really hit the right note. Then there is Dandy Life, Compliment, Run, Needs, and Crown to smooth things out a bit. Generate is really a great song that blends distortion and base heavy riffs quite well. And then there is heavy, the go-to song of the CD. With the power riffs, repeated lyrics, and distortion packed middle, this song elevates the whole cd. A MUST HAVE album.
I was disappointed with this album, the previous one is best.......1999-06-13
I thought that the album would be the best. Collective Soul: Collective Soul was a 5 star while also a 5 star, Collective Soul: Disciplined Breakdown just wasn't quite as good as Collective Soul: Collective Soul. In conclusion, I was sort of upset at many of the songs produced on Collective Soul: Dosage. Best of luck producing later albums.

Wheat, chaff, wheat , chaff... chaff..........2001-02-26
Again, with apologies to the band, I have to admit that this was NOT one of the Tzadik releases that ended up impressing me. There are some interesting soundscapes, it's sort of technodubfunkrock stuff, club music taken just a little outside the usual parameters -- but after two listenings I sold it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who didn't have a particular reason to be interested (people obsessive about Japanese/New York club music, for example). By the way, the bands name is inconveniently represented by a phonetic alphabet neither Amazon nor myself can type, but is pronounced more like "dosage," methinks.
heavy guitar, you wouldn't expect it on Tzadik.......2001-02-25
This is a rock album, very modern, but still rock. Heavy, sharp guitar riffs played over deep, Laswell-like bass and looped drums. Sexy japanese vocals on the top. Do you remember the band Head of David from the 80? It's their modern version. Compositions are pretty simple, nothing like Naked City, the rhythm is steady, based on patterns, but the sound is clever, it makes me wonder what is the instrument.

Customer Reviews:
This cd is rocking.......2000-08-16
I liked Scissorfight's other CDs and this one is a whole step of rock above the others. It's the same sound with a new edge. This could possibly be the best CD of 1999. I reccomend this to anyone who wants to rock at parties. I bought this for $18.00 at the store and it's dirt cheap on Amazon, definately worth every penny. I can't see how people could not buy it-SO HURRY UP, DA PARTY'S WAITING!
