5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-08-23

This is a bit of a departure from Chuck's Death days with the tempo changes and all out thrash. The tempo changes are there of course, but the balls to wall Death is missing. This can be seen as a good thing. Fans of Death will find much to appreciate on this album (just look at who is on this 'Supergroup' album ! Digiorgio and Christy. Absolute monsters!
This album is much more in the vein of power or prog metal than death metal and the tempos can be slightly slower than before, but some of Chuck's best compositions are found here. 'Expect The Unexpected' is a definite masterpiece worthy of Chuck. Tim Aymar's voice is a nice change, sounding at times like Bruce Dickinson, though he cannot hit nearly the same high notes. This album will be an improvement for Death fans who detest Chuck's voice (though I think it's not half-bad...would you rather have Chris Barnes? or the guy from Obituary? I think not!) In summation, pick this album up is you are a Death fan, techinical metal fan, or have ever heard DiGiorgio. He really shines on this album. Hopefully Chuck's mom's lawsuit will free up the release of the second album, which the other members support. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars If your a fan of Death..........2006-07-31

Im a huge fan of the band Death, Control Denied is the singers side project. I really enjoyed it, its more melodic than Death, but good nonetheless. So if your a fan of Death, you might want to check this out. I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Basically a collection of riffs from ex-Death members.......2005-07-13

When you start listening to this album, it has a lot of promise in the beginning then it goes...where does it go? Since the album has a lot of ex-Death members in it, you'd expect it to sound a little bit like a Death album, which it does, but the main problem with this album is "connection".

This album is basically a collection of really cool riffs that somehow were not worked into song format very well. For example, in the song "Expect the Unexpected" it starts out with a cool intro and then a great verse which right as you're getting into BOOM, they change to another riffs. As you're finally getting into the chorus yet AGAIN, another change-up. These guys must have forgot that part of the art of music is finding a cool riff (which they have done well) and knowing how long you can use it for (another important detail) before it becomes old.

All the instruments are cool, especially the guitars and bass (DiGiorgio is THE MAN when it comes to bass). The vocals are incredibly annoyning in that kind of old-school Power Metal variety. They actually found someone worse than Chuck to replace Chuck -Wow, that just makes a ton of sense guys. Because of the cryptic/weird nature of the lyrics I'm going to assume Schuldiner wrote the lyrics.

Still worth checking out especially if you can find this one the cheap. Rather ironic title for the album too, huh?

(Goes without saying: R.I.P. Chuck)

5 out of 5 stars "Individual thoughts that have come missing...".......2005-02-08

The Fragile Art of Existence is renowned Death guitarist/singer Chuck Shuldiner's swan song to his fans before he lost his two-year battle against cancer in the end of 2001. Interestingly, Chuck was in the process of composing/recording his follow-up to this album, but unfortunately nothing has come of it. Control Denied was his side project which he had put together in order to concentrate more on his guitar playing and unique songwriting. Chuck does not do his trademarked death vocals on this one. Enter Tim Aymar (Psycho Scream, Pharaoh) with traditional Heavy Metal-like vocals that are often compared to the likes of Rob Halford, Warrel Dane and Bruce Dickinson. While I don't hear the Dickinson influence, I tend to agree with the Halford/Dane comparisons to an extent, as Tim Aymar belts out some scary high screams like Halford and possesses a similar delivery to Dane. You need to check out his band Pharaoh if you want to hear more of that. This album was originally intended to have Nevermore singer Warrel Dane on vocals, but things didn't work out and Tim Aymar got the gig. I love Warrel Dane's vocals to no end, but Tim Aymar really gives this album its final touch as a killer frontman.

Shannon Hamm shares the guitar duties with Chuck, often playing cutting thrash-based riffs that sharply contrast Chuck's ethereal and textural playing which often spiral into crushing metal riffage during the solos and mid-sections of the tunes. Both guitarists interlock thrashy riffs alongside some curious tremelo picking and even add some plucked acoustic guitars ("When the Link Becomes Missing") which are later embraced by a forceful, melodic metal drive. The solo in this song is possibly my favourite on the album together with Chuck's textural playing in the closing track. It's a solo that builds up very slowly and becomes this intense, passionate expression towards the end -- it simply sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it. Steve DiGiorgio and Richard Christy continue to be an unmatchable duo in thrash/death metal driven music as DiGiorgio plays fat bass figures as well as interesting funky melodies, as in the intro of "What If ...?", and works his bass as an independent instrument throughout the whole album. Richard Christy is a great fit for this type of music, though I feel his snare sound gets a little muffled in some parts because of the mix, but he proves to be the perfect drummer for Control Denied in the way he exhibits powerful synchopated rhythms and technically impossible drum fills.

What makes The Fragile Art of Existence so great, in my opinion, is that it consists of only eight tracks and has a total running time of 50 minutes. There are no fillers here; each song is compositionally-strong, graced by brilliant musicianship and a fitting production (by Chuck and Jim Morris). The progressive side explored on Death's last album, The Sound of Perseverance, is even more boldly carried over to this album, particularly in the multi-textured "Expect the Unexpected", which not only has a great vocal melody, but also features various harmony changes. The centrepieces of the album, "What If ....?" and "When the Link Becomes Missing" are both thrash-rooted progressive songs in the way that allow Chuck to play textural guitars that fiercely contrast the otherwise heavy music, mainly driven by Hamm and DiGiorgio. This is further explored in the almost 10-minute epic, "The Fragile Art of Existence", which is Chuck's testament to stylistic cohesion and passionate songwriting. Three minutes into the song, Aymar coldly utters the words "NO TIME FOR SELF-PITY" and the textured guitar riffs are suddenly replaced by tasty guitar shred before giving way to the initial atmospheric guitar themes.

Chuck's lyrics on this one are perhaps his most introspective and personal lyrics (hence he chose a different project that would separate his musical vision from Death) and Travis Smith comes up with a very fitting artwork. The album is mixed, engineered and mastered by Jim Morris and co-produced by Chuck himself. If you're a metal fan, be it thrash, heavy or prog, and don't own this, then your collection is incomplete.

4 out of 5 stars Pieces don't quite fit, but still quite good. 7/10.......2005-01-08

I have to admit, this album is a bit disappointing, but it was pretty much bound to be, from my perspective. For all intents and purposes, 'The Fragile Art of Existence' is the follow up to 'Sound of Perseverance', which is THE GREATEST METAL ALBUM EVER, which naturally makes it a tough act to follow. It's especially sad that Chuck died before getting to finish any other Control Denied work, since this was an experiment, and he likely would've gotten better with the Control Denied material given more time. But, this is all we've got, and it is a good album, even if it isn't up to Chuck's high standards.

For 'The Fragile Art of Existence' Chuck Schuldiner assembled what is arguably the greatest metal lineup ever. Schuldiner is my favorite lead guitarist and perhaps my favorite rhythm guitarist as well, and Shannon Hamm is not far behind. Steve DiGiorgio is probably my favorite bassist other than Sean Malone, and Richard Christy is definitely one of the very best metal drummers ever. Of course, each of the last 4 Death albums were filled by amazing musicians, so this is to be expected. However, they don't give their best performances. Schuldiner's leads aren't as good as most of his latter era work, and Hamm's are not as good as he was on the previous album. They're generally a bit too formless, not as melodic and grounded as the SoP work. Still, they're very good from an absolute perspective. Christy's drums are quite a bit more restrained than usual. I guess this fits the material better, but the drumwork is still less interesting in and of itself. DiGiorgio is as good as ever, however, and is given a particularly prominent role. Tim Aymar is the only new guy, and he does a good job. He's a fairly standard classic metal singer-screecher, and while he's not particularly distinctive, he's more than capable.

So, we have a great lineup here, headed by the best metal songwriter ever, but only a 4 star album. It's got some basic tonal problems which really hurt the album. The problem is, Chuck sacrificed some of Death's strengths while not gaining much in return. Though this is a very, very complex album with tons of riffs and tempo changes and whatnot, it's quite a bit more controlled and restrained sounding than your average Death album, lacking either the unrelenting speed of Human or the 80's albums, or the unhinged wildness of 'Sound of Perseverance'. The production is less intense as well, with a lighter guitar tone and less intense drum sounds. All this was done, presumably, to fit in with the clean, melodic vocals. However, the album still doesn't play to the strengths of power/classic metal. It's a very, very solemn affair, never achieving the sort of epic feeling or grandiosity of good power metal, and isn't really anymore melodic than Death's later material.(Which was plenty melodic for tech-death-thrash, but insufficient for tech-power-thrash like this) Aymar is largely quite restrained, an operatic vocalist chained by a serious, straight laced tone. So, this all comes together to say that the album as a whole is fairly lacking in visceral intensity or emotional resonance. It's both technically impressive and intriguing, but it generally doesn't have enough punch or heart. Chuck tried to combine his style with classic metal and came to a compromise that wasn't really satisfactory for either side. That, and the riffs, solos and choruses and all that stuff just aren't as good as they usually are in Death's work. though their relative weakness is doubtless related to the basic stylistic problem of the album.

I know I'm attacking this album a lot, but that's mainly because it's problems are so very clear. It's still a good album, with 2 flat-out great songs, and the rest are certainly nowhere near bad.(though they aren't terribly close to great either.) 'Consumed' is the opener. It's a brilliant song, perfectly constructed, and with more emotional resonance than any other track on the album. The main verse riff and chorus are both great, immediately memorable and really quite sad sounding. The intro and middle break are quite sweet too, and the song has some of the best leadwork on the album. 'Breaking the Broken' is the second track, as well as the second best track. Best chorus on the album, with some fine shrieking from Aymar. It's the only chorus on the album that achieves that sort of grandiosity befitting a vocalist of his nature. Furthermore, it's got some of the very best basswork on the album. Another great song. However, I don't have all that much to say about the rest of the album. There are plenty of interesting riffs, and good leads, but damned if anything on the rest of the album really reaches out and grabs you. 'Cut Down' kinda does, with it's rather angry chorus, as do parts of 'Believe' but that's about it. It's interesting music, but on an almost entirely intellectual level. Not enough melody to be that memorable, and not heavy or punchy enough to rock at optimum efficiency.

All that said, I definitely recommend this to any fans of latter-era Death, provided they aren't wholeheartedly opposed to classic metal singing. It's nowhere near the best thing Chuck did, but it's interesting as a whole, and has some truly brilliant moments.

5 out of 5 stars The best Power Metal album ever!!!.......2007-04-29

Yup, this is where Labyrinth tied it all together to make this masterpiece of epic proportions. Where to start, metal was in a funk come the mid-'90's, so about this time, bands had to draw from more current bands/albums for influence. Something fresh, something heavy, something epic...RTHD filled the bill. Olaf and Co. drew upon influences such as American thrash band Toxik, Yngwie's Fire & Ice (the precursor to most symphonic power metal IMO), and Stratovarius' Episode album to come up with this sound, and what a sound it is! Just go buy this album, you will not be disappointed! Thrashing riffs everywhere, glorious extended solos, excellent rhythmic time changes, some of the most wicked double-bass drumming from this genre, well written mini-epics, orchestral (not cheesy) keyboards flourish in just the right places, and Rob Tyrant's vocals (think a more operatic Ray Alder) over the wonderful noise makes for one magnificent album . I can't say enough about this molten metal masterpiece...faves cuts include New Horizons (whoa!!! pure adrenaline rush here), Moonlight, Lady Lost In Time, Thunder, and Time After Time. The rest of the cuts are no slouch, either! This is the cream of the Power Metal Crop!

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2005-06-11

This album blows me away,it's fast, melodic, riffs are good, solos are great(shredders),beautiful and the singing is amazing.
This is Labyrinth's second album and new comer Roberto Tiranti(vocals). This is their best album.
Moonlight starts the album off, which is a perfect song to start the album.
The keyboards in the song New Horizons are perfect.
Lady Lost In Time starts off very beautiful sounding(ballad),of course the whole album is beautiful sounding, but then the song gets real fast.
The song Feel(Legend B. Remix) is a instrumental.
Die For Freedom is the last song and my favorite on the album and of all time by Labyrinth, the song is absolutly mind blowing.
They make the solos sound like violins in this song.
This album is amazing and it's the best power metal album ever made

3 out of 5 stars Labyrinth-'Return To Heaven Denied'(Metal Blade) 3 1/2 stars.......2005-06-09

Labyrinth is an Italian progressive metal band that apparently has other titles available.Their sound is similar to that of a few bands of the same genre that emerged in the later '80's.They tend to 'sort of' master their craft with great harmony vocals, melodic riffs and good song structure.Line-up:Joe Terry-vocals,Ander Rain&Olaf Thorsen-guitars,Chris Breeze-bass,Ken Taylor-keyboards and Frank Andiver-drums.Believe that several of these members left the group prior to the next album.Might appeal to some fans of Armored Saint,Crimson Glory,Helloween and possibly Fates Warning.

5 out of 5 stars How is this so good?!?!.......2004-02-18

I always forget about this awesome band when I go to pick a CD to listen to. Normally, I reach for Norther, Graveworm, or a new CD that I haven't decided how good it is yet. Those few times that Return to Heaven Denied is the chosen CD to get to my stereo or CD player, I'm blown away by what I hear. Not only is Labyrinth one of the fastest bands I've heard (Dragonforce and Skylark being faster), but they sound so beautiful when they play fast! Imagine older Stratovarius for the speed part.

I also must make note of the melodicness. This doesn't mean that the guitar riffs are well written by any means. The keyboards particularly in songs 1-6 and 11 are so perfectly woven in. Unlike bands like Sonata Arctica, the constant keyboards belong in the sound. I know - Sonata Arctica isn't a good example, but that's all I can think of. While I'm comparing the 2, Sonata Arctica is better. Why? Because ALL of Sonata Arctica's albums are great. Labyrinth only has this one. I hate the production and lack of keyboards on their newer self-titled album. That album would get 3 or less stars from me.

Labyrinth's singer is wonderful. He is no Fabio Lione, but he compliments the drums and keyboards well. You really have to hear it to believe it. This doesn't sound like Secret Sphere, Rhapsody, Skylark, Arachnes, or Highlord. This is more like common power metal with an Italian voice than something you would normally hear coming out of Italy. A lot of credit goes to Labyrinth for this album. The perfectly done keyboards in tracks 1 and 3 alone should catch your attention. Also, I think its track 5 - the singer holds one note for 10 whole seconds! Certain stand-out points like this help this album be such a gem in melodic power metal. Milestone? No - there aren't many of those. "Gem" is good enough. My idea of a milestone is something like Hatebreeder, Visions, Winterheart's Guild, When the Aurora Falls, or Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part I. When something that hasn't been done before is accomplished to near perfection, THAT'S a milestone.

So overall, if you don't have this album yet and want to fill your "jewelry collection" of gems, you need this album! "Pay" your respects to this great band!

When you get the time, go read some of my other reviews and say if they were helpful to you or not.

4 out of 5 stars italian masters!!!!!!!!!! but............2003-12-27

hello???? has anyone realised or even noticed that 3 of the metal blade-produced albums "Sons of Thunder", " Return to heaven denied", and "timeless crime", are rather poor in production??? the vocalist's voice is barely heard on most of the songs and when the solos are shared between the two guitarists, the second solo is barely heard and drowned by the music.
lyrically, the album is good. technically, it is more fast and less progressive than SONS OF THUNDER, with fast riffs, longer solos that seems to be a must to come towards the end, a structure which i have to come hate cus i think its very uncreative and rather predictable and boring, and rather unexpected from such a diverse band. the songs are generally short, again, diversity deserves more time to be shown and developed and these guys were not only fast in their songs but also fast in ending them.....:) the general sound of this album is also more power, reminscent of "stratovarious" in some of the songs. yet again, the album has nice songs, nice ballads, nice tunes, good solos, excellent riffs, but no great moments but only the potential. another thing i noticed, is the choice of distribution of the songs, from the third song til the sixth are all of the same style and are all placed one after the other.
now let me try to analyse song by song, briefly:

1- moonlight: is a good opener. fast riffs, nice solos, but again short.

2- new horizons: is the best song on the album, with more diversity than the rest of the songs.

3- the night of dreams: is also one of my favorites, reminds me a bit of "slave to the night" from "labyrinth", and "touch the rainbow" from S.O.T.

4- lady lost in time: another beautiful song.

5- state of grace: it starts out beautifully, but gimme a break, it is very shorttttttttttttttttttttttttt......... what a waste!!!!:(

6- heaven denied: nice and short...lol!!!!!!!!!!

7- thunder: is simply a technically fast song,as if the guys decided lets now make a very fast song, period. but still nice.

8- feel: very nice instrumental even with the techo bits; a very nice melody, a kind of melody which is rather absent from the rest of the songs, i dont know why.... it is the only real progressive tune on this album....and where the hell is the solo when the music really deserves one???????!!!!!!!!!!

9- time after time: i liked only the second half of it cus again that part is progressive.

10- falling rain: excellent ballady song, with a gr8 solo.

11- die for freedom: a good closer, yet again, i dont thk they should have closed with this one. it has a nice complex beat to it, which kind of sticks to ur head.

i conclude by saying that i thk the guys have arrived at their maturity in their latest effort" LABYRINTH", production wise, it was a very smart decision to move to Century records, cus the production quality of tha album is gr8, with clear vocals and clear solos, lyrically much better, and more diversity, less fastness, shorter solos in different places in the songs, and gr8 melodies.

I gave this album a 5 out of 5 because this is simply the one of the best albums ever conceived by mankind! The guitars are simply stunning! Truly talented musicians! You will never find riffs like these anywhere else! The vocals are certainly the most unique and awe inspiring I've ever heard! most likely the best metal singer of all time! The drumms and bass are excellent as well! Indeed the production quality is lacking but the music is so powerful that it can't be held back! This is truly one of the albums no matter how many times you listen to it, it never gets old! This is truly an EPIC album!

Wow,when I first heard this album a long time ago I was blown away, because I am not a fan of Nevermore, but you know what this album is nothing like Nevermore.Every headbanger will like this album.Every song rules on this album.Warrel Dane does not sing on this album the way he does in Nevermore,he sings high on every song on this album, his voice is amazing. They cover White Rabbit, and you know what it's one of the best covers you will hear,Dave Mustaine, the all time greatest metal person does a solo in the beginning of White Rabbit and it's awesome just because it's Dave Mustaine.Die For My Sins is an awesome song, get Labyrinth's Timeless Crime ep and you will hear Labyrinth cover that song, they do an awesome job on that song,Rob Tyrant sings in a thrash voice on that song(amazing)other then his normal powermetal voice. Then Veil Of Disguise ends the album which just rules. The production isn't that good but who cares the album rules.Trust me it is nothing like Nevermore style,if you like real metal buy this album and you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars POP MUSIC DENIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-13

First and foremost, the music on this highly overlooked and rather obscure metal album is MIND BOGGLING...This is Power Metal at its finest. If you are lucky enough to pick up this rare gem the first key element you will notice is the godly vocalist Warrel Dane, now of the thrash metal outfit Nevermore. I personaly haven't listened to any of Nevermore's material, but Dane's range and power on this album is amazing, and take into consideration that it's his actual RANGE and not falsetto-you will be pleased. Next is the incredibly talented guitar playing. Lenny Rutledge and Sean Blosl shred like no one's business.Period.The riffage is HUGE and way ahead of its time. While not too introspective or "deep", the lyirc writing conjures up images of power, war and fantasy, and even the afterlife; but at the same time remains carefree and well written. Simply Amazing.
So why only 4 stars you ask? Musicianship aside, the production on this album leaves a lot to be desired. At first listen one will notice that, no matter how much you turn up the stereo, the volume and sheer TONE of the music is minimal, but these are petty complaints.

So set aside a weekend and give this disc a spin. While doing so wonder where the hell the world was at while these guys were tearing it up...For this disc was released in 1988 but is not hair metal at all, and very little if any compairisons can be drawn to other metal bands now or even then. This material in no way sounds dated. Yeah, its THAT good...

Ultimately, if you are fan of heavy metal or great power rock in general, cough up the 13 bucks or so and give your ears a present. Someone should call EPIC records and request that this disc be remastered because it surely deserves it and you'd be hard pressed to find anything remotely relating to this band on the web or even its former members(i.e. now in Nevermore). Even as I write this I'm uploading the songs to my computer, and its 2005! These guys certainly did things their own way, and boy they did it well...

5 out of 5 stars The New Quartet Sound.......2002-02-23

Having enjoyed a long and well established tradition for quality black gospel quartet recordings, Malaco records has definitely hit Gold with this 2002 release. The Bonner Brothers of Oxford, Mississippi have established a new sound in the quartet industry. Their ability to incorporate effectively the technologies of the new millennium, and a smooth vocal harmony base, makes this CD a must have for lovers of good quartet gospel. While the major spin of the CD is traditional gospel many of the selections have a very modern flare. Selections like "Stand By Me", "The Name of Jesus", and the title cut "Delayed But Not Denied" are sure to become hits in the very near future. I highly recommend this CD for all lovers of gospel music!!

5 out of 5 stars Great disc! Give it a shot........2005-06-21

I had picked up this disc awhile ago after seeing them at a gig and lost it. Well, I just found it recently and gave it a spin and it's got some great songs on it. Their new disc is much better but give this one a try. If you dig Chevelle or From Zero you might like these guys.

5 out of 5 stars Very awesome compilation!.......2004-10-20

I picked up my disc at a show in Ann Arbor, Michigan just a couple days ago! These guys have done an awesome job -- I can't put this CD down. The riffs are catchy, the beats are awesome, and I particularly love the synth work in Lullaby. The lyrics are thoughtful and the vox are awesomely melodious for a rock band. This is the kind of stuff you can play on loop constantly and just plain not grow tired of it... This CD is a steal at this price. And if you like the CD, be sure to see them live at your earliest convenience, because they put on an awesome show!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing else like it.......2004-04-06

It's so refreshing to hear something new and different. These guys are doing it right. The songs are sick and the playing is off the hinges. Hot vocals too. There's a cool vibe throughout this CD. It hasn't left my changer since I bought it in January. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD.......2004-04-03

I have a lot to say about this CD. Firstly, I totally stumbled onto Hypnogaja when I was watching the show "Las Vegas" and I heard their song "Voodoo Baby" in one of the scenes. It took me a while to find out who did the song and I finally found it on copy of a European CD - "Bridge to Nowhere" - so I bought it. I was really impressed with the band's depth and originality, so I bought this CD. It has to be one of my favorite albums ever. I listen to it all the time and really enjoy the personal feel of the words. The singer just seems to be singing about my life. My favorite songs are "Nothing Box," "The Spaceman" and "Lullaby." I can't wait for the next CD!

      5 out of 5 stars Jill from L.A. sucks.......2004-03-19

This band is awesome. Have the CD. Bought 6 for christmas gifts and just bought several more for birthday gifts. Jill from L.A. and Tom from New Hampshire and all the other alias' this loser with obviously too much free time comes up with, sucks. They obviosuly need to go find a day job instead of worrying about other people "keeping" theirs. This person is obviously a failure at whatever they think they do in life, and they are bitter at everyone else who ISN't a failure. You can't just talk smack and get fans to not like a band. If we like the music, we like the music. We don't know you so why would we care what you think? You are a speck in our universe, try to grasp that concept. Just walk away now you little Amazon troll.

THis is fiends first cd on big boy records , not no limit. Its pretty good. I love track 5 called vibin. That song is so smooth. All of fiends cds are rock soild. Dont sleep on him as a rapper or producer.

5 out of 5 stars Busting Out with that Same-Sex Love!.......2004-03-31

It's heartening to hear Fiend finally stand up and be counted. At long last he is resisting the pressures of our homophobic society and telling the world that his deep love for another man Won't Be Denied!

Atta boy, Fiend. We here in San Francisco salute you and admire your courage. Now if only the rest of the rap world could come out, what a wonderful world this would be!

      5 out of 5 stars clean 4 show!.......1999-10-02

5 out of 5 stars This album is pretty tight.......1999-08-30

I am a big Fiend fan and I have both of his albums. This must be his first album before he joined the tank and from what I heard of it so far it might be his best album ever! I going to get this album.

      Album Description

Access Denied, the fast and furious debut recording of Free Verse. Moody melodic pauses skid out into hardcore riffs, time changes on a dime, three singers punctuating pissed off poetry with colorful cussing. A fearless exploration of the rape culture we call home. The back cover includes a disturbing semi pornographic painting by Jenni Black.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brash and beautiful.......1998-12-06

Woa. FREE VERSE are a pissed trio whose social and political commentary is almost as aggressive as their music. Their female -fury-core ala BIKINI KILL and SPITBOY is both engaging and intense. Musically they alternate between brash and beautiful. One minute they are harsh and grating the next melodic and restrained. The contrast serves a two fold purpose. It keeps the music interesting by providing a wide reaching appeal and it serves as a metaphor for the band's message which uses esoteric lyrical imagery to paint a brutal picture of horrific sexual dominance. Not a picture from the perspective of the dominator ala some cock rock band, but a picture courtesy of one who has been abused and mistreated. The lyrics are shocking in their effectiveness to recreate scenes of unfathomable human misogyny and arrogance. There is almost no hope in the music of FREE VERSE. Instead it is a vehicle for the release of a victim's anger and hatred. The music may be (at times)post-punk but the lyrics are 100% hardcore fury. Anyone afraid of women who take a stand against male dominated cultural programming will run screaming from this album. Anyone interested in exploring the frame of reference of a person who won't take it anymore will be able to do so here.

5 out of 5 stars Alternately serene and blood curdling.......1998-11-21

"...alternately serene and blood curdling. ...intense, ambitiously epic songs. "Feels Blind" is even more passionate than the Bikini Kill original." Falling James, L.A. Weekly

      5 out of 5 stars Surprize Wonder!.......2002-09-14

Access Denied is a wonderful techno CD. It is mostly instrumental. I suppose you could dance to it, but the music is very intellectually satisfying. They mix some horns with the synthesizers at times. The synthesizers are very criticle to this bands style. I found a copy used. I play it a lot. This is a bright sounding CD. Not dark at all. It is both soothing and fun! No tiresome transe beat drums! This is a Great find!
