4 out of 5 stars Is This It? No........2001-11-30

This isn't so much a review as an addendum to the description of A.R.E. Weapons found on this page. Whereas comparisons can indeed be drawn between A.R.E. Weapons and The Strokes, I think that, for the sake of those Amazon customers unfamiliar with one or both of these bands, it is probably worth mentioning that they do not - repeat, do not - sound even remotely alike. Both bands are darlings of the British music press, both are fashion savvy (though in very different ways), and both draw heavily upon New York's musical heritage. However, whereas the Strokes play raw, Velvet Underground-esque pop, A.R.E. Weapons exhibit a sound more aptly compared to Suicide (the band was even quoted as saying "we set out to be Suicide" in an interview with the NME). Of course, just as the Strokes manage to elicit comparisons to the Velvet Underground without sounding like a second-rate rehash of that band (though I'm certain there are those who would argue otherwise), A.R.E. Weapons similarly transcend their likening to Suicide. The musical formulae employed by both A.R.E. Weapons and their self-stated exemplars are nearly identical: brooding, mostly spoken-word vocals over dirty synthesizers, thudding bass, and mechanical drum-machine beats. But, compositionally, while Suicide by and large restricted themselves to monotonous, interminable droning, the songs of A.R.E. Weapons assault their listener with controlled, rapid bursts of sex and mayhem. Reveling in the grittiness of their urban surroundings, they issue forth dark paeans to street violence and turbulent, dysfunctional romance set to driving electro beats. Theirs is a celebration of New York's seamy underworld akin to Taxi Driver, or Mean Streets, setting to music the desparation, the brutality, and the depravity captured in these films.
If the Strokes are an embodiment of the human and artistic beauty of New York - romantic escapades and youthful angst set to jangly pop - then A.R.E. Weapons are an embodiment of its ugliness - street fights and love gone sour accompanied by dirty, pounding electro. New York's Yin and Yang, done rock 'n' roll-style.

    Album Description

A.R.E. Weapons are back after their 2002 Rough Trade debut to bring their style of NYC gutter-rock to the masses! "Free in the Streets" takes a more direct and sincere approach to the rock, heavily incorporating the energy and excitement of their live show onto disc, thanks to the addition of a live drummer for the first time ever…!

3 out of 5 stars review from Synthesis.......2005-10-26

Dance enthusiasts A.R.E. Weapons resurface after disappearing from brief underground stardom in the early `00s with Free in the Streets, a collection of danceable tunes that walk a fine line between being fun, and being annoying. While Free in the Streets will make you want to shake your bon-bon (see: cheesy, yet irresistible synth riff in "Weakest Ones"), the band seems more concerned with creating layered electro-rock songs that are friendlier to head banging than to doing the Macarena. Free in the Streets is a silly endeavor (lines like "middle finger high in the middle of the night" dominate the disc), but it's also a pretty fun album, and those who like a little rock when getting their groove on should give this band a listen.

4 out of 5 stars better than alot of other s**t out right now..........2005-09-30

...but not nearly as fun as their debut... lots of slower songs, real drums, etc. same trashy vocal delivery. sadly their guitarist died of a heroin overdose earlier this year, but i hope they tour. i think a.r.e. weapons have tons of potential, and i think they get unfairly pegged as a "style over substance" band, cuz they're oh-so-fashionable (and paul sevigny-brother of chloe-is an unofficial member) but they actually sound great. definitely heavily influenced by suicide, and i think they are much better than many indie bands that get way more recognition, and have more true punk grit in their pinkies than all of green day combined. i would actually give this album a 3.5 star rating, but 4 is close enough.

    4 out of 5 stars Don't be scared!.......2005-09-29

After one or two listens, I almost sold the first ARE Weapons cd back to my local record store. I didn't expect an entire album full of abrasive keyboard and playstation-style beats. Yet I couldn't bring myself to get rid of that sloppy trainwreck of an album. Why? Because it's fun. These guys put the F U back in fun on that album.

So now they're back with a vengence, and real drums. It's rocking my face. Ouch! If you like your rock neat and tidy, just don't buy this cd. It's macho, yet danceable. Like Lemmy singing for Depeche Mode at a secret party.

Bottom Line: If they ever make a movie based on the old arcade game Bad Dudes!, this would be the soundtrack. So if you catch my drift, if you know what I'm sayin', buy this album. Bad Dudes!

The fierce New York rockers who make up A.R.E. Weapons bludgeon one with the sounds of the underbelly of their city throughout their debut. The trio creates a stark, feverish aural assaults with snatches of rock, hip-hop, punkish oaths, and scolding lyrics bellowed over heart-mimicking dance hall beats. A.R.E. Weapons pick up where Lou Reed's walk on the wild side left off in the '70s, but deliver their music with more grit and aggression; think Suicide forced through a rusty blender. This is art rock at its nadir and it sounds just like the future. --Jaan Uhelszki

1 out of 5 stars Because there's no "zero stars" option!.......2006-01-14

Even as a joke, this would be horrible; however, I think this band take it seriously - and it blows! I picked up this CD because I heard A.R.E. were like a combination of suicide, front 242, and iron maiden: Interesting. NO!! A.R.E. are a bad imitation of front 242 and watered-down Liars at best. The guitar riffs are awful and the lyrics are even worse. Example: "Hey World" begins with how much it sucks to be 13.

When I saw Pelican in concert, they were opening (?!?!?) for A.R.E., so I decided to give them a second chance. The sound guy must not have liked what he heard, because the bar chatter was louder. "Louder" I yelled, so that I might find something redeeming in their music. "Yeah, SUCK louder!" Someone else yelled - I had to agree & give him a high-five. Maybe I would have liked this when I was 12 and didn't know any better. ZERO STARS!

5 out of 5 stars A.R.E. Weapons are my personal lord and savior.......2005-02-09

Sure, they are a joke, but when I get off work and i'm racing home--and I plug in this CD--for a breif moment the earth trembles in my mighty grasp. I saw them live, but I didn't realize how perfect they are because I was waiting to be (sadly) dissapointed by Trans-Am--so I thought A.R.E. were wierd freaks (and I usually go for wierd freaks). I saw their disc in the used bin and I tested the CD in the little player they have, and my jaw hit the floor--I was blown away. This is the male response to the typically more feminine genre of electro-clash (IE: Le Tigre, Peaches, Chicks on Speed, Ladytron, Miss Kitten, etc.). It's not as slick as The Faint or Fitcherspooner though--it's more like a brilliant parody of The Stooges on bad rave candy. This is, without question, my deserted island CD.

this is, quite possibly, a masterpiece the ressurection of discopunk.

it's harsh, it's brutal, it's truthful, and it ends with the "my generation" of the electronic age: "hey world". if ANYTHING, this album is perfect for the last three minutes.

    loud. offensive. genius.

    4 out of 5 stars I got that A·R·E·..........2004-07-01

Ok, let's see...A lot of this album feels like the (...)love child of Wesley Willis and Bis, with maybe a little bit of the Beastie Boys thrown in. I dig it. It certainly isn't anything you'll hear on mainstream radio, but still, I only found out about the group by seeing the video for "Don't Be Scared" on M2 in the middle of the night. So I guess now they're getting something resembling mainstream recognition. My only real complaint about the album is that it's little more than 30 minutes long.

Highly Recommended: "A·R·E·" and "Black Mercedes"

5 out of 5 stars Raw N.Y.C. electro, rock, hip hop, and decadence........2004-01-04

Open up your mind to a group that embodies the fear, confusion and disturbing reality of N.Y.C in a post-9/11 world. This is artsy, electronic and cool music.

This album hearkens back to the N.Y.C. style and attitude of Lou Reed and Suicide. But this ain't retro rock. This is real: gritty, raw and fearless.

"Hey World" is the one of the best songs on the album. It is an emotional song concerning the future of youth. It opens up your mind to the difficulty and somewhat horror of being young and facing the world. Growing up stinks.

The first song on the album "Don't be Scared" gives you the sleezy idealistic courage to be cool and face your greatest fears. The second song confronts the issue of drug use. This isn't anti-drug. "Changes" is a crazy testament to the dramatically changing modern world. "F*** You Pay Me" opens up with a Lou Reed lyric. My favorite song on the album is "Street Gang". The song paints a picture of the mind of a gang member. It reminds me of Sol Yurick's street gang culture depiction.

5 out of 5 stars I don't know what this Import junk is all about, but..........2004-07-30

My first introduction to these guys was when they opened for Trans Am in Little Rock, Arkansas (shut up). I thought they were clowns, but for some reason I found myself increasingly amused by the fact that they look like burnt out headbangers with some kind of twisted euro-punk attitude. I was naturally hypnotized by the fact that they consisted of a guitarist and a singer with some drum machine stuff on a little stand to the side. The singer looked like some kind of twisted cross between Axl Rose and Keith Richards trying hard to rap but comming out more like Iggy Pop with a random programmer from My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult backing him. It was brilliantly absurd, and after Trans Am putting on one of the most dissapointing shows of my life, I was left a little curious for more of this group with the bad band name. So, I was thumbing through the used section at CD Wharehouse and was quite tickled to find A.R.E. weapons self titled 2003 release resting near the crappy Aerosmith come back albums. I put it in my holds and wound up comming back later the same day because my curiosity was so overwelming. So anyway, I plug the disc in and immediatly find myself grinning from ear to ear. I just want to kiss these guys because I am so damn tickled by their whole approach. Seriously, if you are about to buy Bumblebeez 81 - the Printz then I can't stop you, but by the time your dissapointment simmers down then maybe A.R.E. will have a widespread US release of this great post-rap electro-punkathon. This is the greatest electro-clash album since "Teaches of Peaches". Finally some more drum machine kids actually understand what makes Iggy Pop similar to James Dean, and why a group like Bikini Kill would go on to spawn a group like Le Tigre. Rock on A.R.E. and don't listen to any of the critics. Fitcherspooner are a Fitcher-price Vegas side show compared to the grimey satire of A.R.E. Weapons. You need this and they need you!

Debut single released on Rough Trade for this group following in the Strokes footsteps. NME gave it single of the week saying 'ARE Weapons are three New York City dirtbags who date models, live on couches & hang out at swanky fashion parties so they can drink all the free beer. Led by a singer called Brain, they play chaotic gigs at art galleries where they like to fight their audience & roll around on the floor, knocking over the exhibits. Like their friends The Strokes, ARE Weapons are hugely retro and sound like they listen to influential art-punks Suicide's first album quite a lot. Their debut single, is an electro-punk anthem about becoming the streetfighting king of New York &, as such, is great. Over buzzing keyboards, big old basslines & a really nasty drum machine Brain sneers lines like, 'I've got my blade/I've got my old lady' to great, grimy effect. The other two tracks are 'Black Mercedes' &
