5 out of 5 stars SO FUN AND FULL OF MEMORIES.......2007-05-14

ALL THE GREAT AND FUN SONGS ARE ON THIS CD. IT'S LIKE BEING BACK IN TIME. I ENJOY IT VERY MUCH.

5 out of 5 stars Top Band.......2007-04-07

Here is a band that produced alot of good songs. There is alot of songs on this disk that are well known, and still get alot of radio play today. The name was influenced from Buddy Holly. They certainly did have one hell of alot of hits this band.Bus Stop ,Carrie-Anne ,Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress ,Dear Eloise ,and a personal favorite He Ain't Heavy...He's My Brother ,Just One Look ,On A Carousel ,and in my opinion the best song of all The Air That I Breathe,i just love that tune.

5 out of 5 stars This One And EPIC ANTHOLOGY Give You Almost All The Hollies You Need.......2007-04-07

With the exception of the great singles "I'm Alive" and "I Can't Let Go", this CD, when combined with EPIC ANTHOLOGY, gives you all of the Hollies music that you really need. Actually, for some people, EPIC ANTHOLOGY might be enough, since much of the material the Hollies got in their pre-Epic years was a bit shoddy, with a number of R&B covers that are a travesty bordering on sacrilege, without any of the soul or spirit of the originals. In fact, according to one source, the reason that the Hollies left Imperial is because the label forced second-rate material on them. However, this claim needs to be taken like the humor in AMERICAN WEDDING, HARVARD MAN, DRIVE ME CRAZY, SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE, WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, SABRINA, THE TEENAGE WITCH, and/or the two GARFIELD movies, since songs like "Bus Stop", "Pay You Back With Interest", and "Look Through Any Window" are great. It's true, however, that the band's sound developed an increasing level of complexity during the Epic years, as is obvious on the moderate 1972 hit "Long Dark Road", whose line "It's over...and we can't revive what's past" led me to plaster my wall with pretty actresses as a deterrent to attending food-related reunions at my old school. "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" is a song that inspired me to support community-service requirements for high-school graduation, and that some people whom I've worked with in the past could learn a lot from as far as how to treat others is concerned. Both songs, and five others, appear on both compilations, but despite the crossover, you won't be creating clutter for your living area by getting both CDs. If anything, you'll be learning how a great band evolved between 1963 and 1975.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing Collection.......2007-01-11

While this album has several duds; there are winners enough (Air That I Breathe, Carousel)to make it worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Album.......2006-11-10

From Amazon.co.uk

Notwithstanding the entirely acceptable omission of 1981's rather desperate Stars-on-45-style retro-medley "Holliedaze," this rather definitive Greatest Hits collection contains every single Hollies song that ever tickled the mass fancy of record buyers anywhere in the world, ever. Even the sleeve notes dispense with the scantest of biographical detail to present a veritable almanac of impressive global chart statistics, including mentions of #1 singles in Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Holland, South Africa, Singapore, Ireland, and Switzerland, as well as the UK. Of course, the Hollies were nothing if not adaptable. The grinning beat pop and "pap pap she waddy wops" of "Stay" through to the folky overtures of "I've Got a Way of My Own" (like an estrogen-free version of the Mamas and the Papas) were obviously marvelous and yet entirely generic responses to the overriding cultural dominance of the Beatles and Bob Dylan. But much the same thing can be said for the majority of their peers.

Still, the 1960s were a golden age for the Hollies and to hear the Graham Gouldman-penned "Bus Stop", "Carrie Anne" (part Kinks, part Beach Boys, part calypso), or the sweet-shop bubblegum of "Jennifer Eccles" is to be reacquainted with a sunny lost world of short skirts, Mini Coopers, and policemen on bicycles. Even the knee-jerk cod-psychedelia of "King Midas in Reverse"--a full-on trumpets-blaring, cello-charging microcosm of Revolver and Sgt. Pepper-isms--deserves revisionist plaudits. There is one newly recorded track on the album (featuring Allan Clarke's replacement, the former Move vocalist Carl Wayne) called "How Do I Survive". Regrettably, it's a disco-cum-AOR rock thing that sounds like the result of an unfortunate liaison between James Ingram and Foreigner. Still, when faced with the spine-tingling, classic gold timelessness of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and "The Air That I Breathe," it would matter not one jot if the bonus track was a three-part harmony rendition of a page out of the telephone directory. --Kevin Maidment

4 out of 5 stars Great Tunes - Many I Never Heard........2007-04-11

This 2-disc set is definitely worth having. It has all of the Hollies hits, plus many tracks you'd only know if you were a Hollies fanatic. These guys could sing! Some of the 3 & 4 part harmonies remind me of the Beach Boys work, and it is also clear that Graham Nash brought that influence to bear when he joined Crosby, Stills and Nash (& sometimes Neil Young). I am thoroughly enjoying this 2-disc set!

5 out of 5 stars Kings of Jangly Harmonic Pop.......2006-06-10

Worth owning this compilation for the breathtaking "Pay You Back With Interest" and "Look Through Any Window." But how can you not love the jangly pop tunes & lush harmonies? They're all here "Carrie Ann," "On A Carousel," "Stop Stop Stop." A beautiful rendition of the Beatles' "If I Needed Someone." Didn't know a lot of the other "hits," but consistently tuneful. A great way to laze through a Sunday afternoon's drive.

5 out of 5 stars A Sweet Return to the Simple Life........2006-05-24

As a kid, my sisters and brother used to buy all kinds of vinyl 45s, and several of them were by this legendary 60s British invasion group. I like the Hollies better than the Beatles (sometimes), but I like the Moodies even better than them (Surprise!). If you are a fan of great British 60s pop groups, you just have to own this; not only for all the classic hits you know, but also others you may not be familiar with. One of my recent favorite discoveries is "The Woman I Love," and a lot of the older chartclimbers that faired better overseas than here in the States.

If you're a longtime fan, you should love this 2-disc collection and, if you're new to them, you are in for such a wonderful surprise. Great songs, great musicianship, and awesome harmonies combined with a multi-faceted collection of influences, even the few bad songs on here are worth the reasonable price. Enjoy to the extreme and at a loud volume!

5 out of 5 stars Wow. The best anthology available today for Hollies fans........2002-10-09

Until the likes of Rhino or Columbia/Legacy get their chnace to put out a definite Hollies anthology, this is the best choice for someone looking to get the full flavor of the best British harmony band, and one of the most reliable 60s hit machines this side of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The Hollies deserve to be mentioned in the same reverential tones reserved for the Who, the Stones, the Kinks and even the Fab Ones, and the At Abbey Road trilogy is ample proof of their deserved place in that pantheon of British Invasion groups. 72 tracks on 3 discs covering three dfecades, and alnost too much good stuff to handle at one sitting.

Disc One has all their earliest singles and B-sides, up to the songs that broke them big in the states -- Bus Stop and Stop! Stop! Stop! The vocal belnd of Alan Clarke, Tony Hicks and Graham Nash, who were also a formidable writing team. Disc Two has the remainder of their US sixties hits (except fro Jennifer Eccles, for some reason), especially their buggest US smash, the anthemic "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother). Disc Three is less comeplete, omitting quite a few singles, possibly because they were not recorded at Abbey Road. You won;t find "Long Cool Woman" on this collection, for example, but you will find "The Air That I Breathe" and their cover of Springsteen's "Sandy" which easily somokjes the Boss's original version.

Throughout, you get ample proof that Tony Hicks, who has been with the group since its first single, is one of the great unbsung guitar heroes of British rock. He has such versatily and such a sense of the right sound to flavor the mix that re really beings up there with the likes of George Harrison, Brian Jones and Pete Townsend.

Buy and savor, firneds, and them explore the rest of this group's oeuvre. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars At Abbey Road 63 - 1989.......2001-03-14

This is a box set full of Hollies Rarities. Disc 1 has 28 tracks, disc 2 has 24 tracks, and disc 3 has 20 tracks. This anthology spands their entire career from the Graham Nash years, the Terry Sylvester years, and to their recent lineup with Allan Clarke. On CD for the first time are the songs Schoolgirl,Sign of the Times, Tip Of The Iceberg, Come Down To The Shore, Samuel, and Loving You Ain't Easy. Included are some tracks from the 80s(which most Hollies compilations never include) Too Many Hearts Get Broken, Find Me A Family, and No Rules. From listening to this box set from the first CD to the last, you can tell how the Hollies continue to improve their sound from album to album. A great compilation spanning their entire career.

this album was the last one written mostly by this incarnation of the hollies and it is one, if not their best. the songs: writting on the wall ,what am i gonna do,hello to romance feature some fine vocal and musical performances by the hollies.the song feet on the ground is such a great overlooked song it really is a shame.this new 2007 release of the album sounds better then ever.if you are a fan of the hollies this album should not be missed.the hollies really were a great band and these 70s albums.
are just as good if not better than the albums from the 60's.this was not the final cd by this incarnation just the last one written by the band.

5 out of 5 stars Hollies still sound hot.......2004-01-13

This IS one of the most comprehensive compilation of the Hollies' UK hits with every track, apart from the final one, having entered the UK charts. All, apart from "Stay" from 1963, are in stereo, I don't know why "Stay" isn't since a stereo mix does exist. What you get with the Hollies is simple, catchy, goodtime music, nothing heavy or preachy. And, despite the fact many of these cuts are almost 40 years old, they still sound good today. Whatever your age or background, give this a try. Incidentally, the band is still around and touring the UK this year. I saw them a couple of years ago and they still sounded fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars Actually, this description is wrong.......2002-10-02

What we have here is a collection of 10 UK singles by the Hollies, with their very rare B-sides. A few songs will be familiar to American audiences, most will not. All in all, some nice surprises, but essentially for completists only.

3 out of 5 stars Listen to it twice.......2007-03-12

Some of the better tracks come later on the album. You have to already be a Hollies fan before listening to this, otherwise get the greatest hits first...and if you're not a Hollies fan at least be a fan of the albums that came out in 67-68. This is probably their best album, which is saying something as they were not much an album group. This is more of a Graham Nash vehicle. I liked it better on the second listen. Don't let Dear Eloise scare you, while its "the hit" it is not the best thing on here. And yes, I am a huge Hollies fan, no one could sing like that.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great cd.......2007-06-12

one major issue people have w. this is that the earlier stuff (ie bus stop) isn't on there. if you buy this w. hollies at abbey road vol 1 which includes best songs recorded before "carrie anne", which is where this disc starts off. There are many great songs on here: carrie anne, dear eloise, king midas in reverse, try it, listen to me, gasoline alley bred, do the best you can, can't tell the bottom from the top, air that i breathe, long road, long cool woman, magic woman touch(both versions rock! Singer Rifkors sounds like a better version of Eddie Vedder), sandy, another night, and indian girl. for as cheap as its been sold here on amazon, do yourself a favor and pick this one up, along w. the abbey road '63-66 disc and you'll have two great discs w. not even one repeated track between both cd's.

5 out of 5 stars This One And GREATEST HITS provide Almost All The Hollies You Need.......2007-04-07

EPIC ANTHOLOGY, taken together with GREATEST HITS, provides all of the Hollies material that you need, with the exceptions of "I Can't Let Go" and "I'm Alive." The best cut on both anthologies is the 1972 Top 30 hit "Long Dark Road", whose line "It's over....and we can't revive what's past" made me realize that looking good for any number of pretty actresses is more important to me than food-related reunions at my old school. However, there's lots of other great songs here as well such as the universal-love ballad "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress", and "The Air That I Breathe", the latter of which says that we need not solve life's every problem. Get both collections together.

    4 out of 5 stars IT AIN'T HEAVY, IT'S THE HOLLIES.......2005-12-19

Not the definitive Hollies collection, but a pretty good one. "Bus Stop" is missing, as is "On A Carousel", but it has twenty others from the original master tapes including, the unlikely hard-rocking "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress", the echoey, organ saturated, "Long Dark Road", the novel. skirt chasing, wolf whistling pop of "Jennifer Eccles", and the harmonic Calypso-Mersey beat of "Carrie Anne", along with super hits, "The Air That I Breathe", and the solemn, and surprisingly still vital, "He Aint Heavy, He's My Brother". The crude stereo separation sounds warm and nostalgic, and the CD package includes commentary for each track by lead singer, Allan Clarke and original producer, Ron Richards.

4 out of 5 stars Okay in its day......but a much better alternative now exists.......2005-09-18

If you grew up in the 1970's and were a big fan of the Hollies, then "The Epic Anthology" just might be your ticket. This collection features all of the great Hollies tunes you would have heard on Top 40 radio.
The Hollies actually began their stint at Epic Records in the summer of '67 with their Top Ten smash "Carrie-Anne". They would go on to have another dozen or so more charted hits over the next 7 or 8 years including "The Air That I Breathe", "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and of course their biggest hit ever "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)" from 1972. "The Epic Anthology" includes each and every one of these charted hits along with a half dozen other tunes from albums they recorded during this period. I can honestly say that there is really not a bad track on this CD.
But for many collectors like myself, "The Epic Collection" had one major flaw. Originally released in 1990, this collection did not include for obvious reasons the Hollies earlier hits recorded for the Imperial label in the mid-sixties. Tunes like "Bus Stop", "Look Through Any Window" and "I Can't Let Go" were among the best and brightest pop tunes of that era. It was extremely frustrating for collectors because for a good many years was not a comprehensive Hollies collection that included their output from both labels. Finally, in 2003 EMI corrected this oversight by releasing the 2 CD set "The Hollies Greatest Hits". This was a godsend for collectors as it contains virtually all of the hits from both labels and remains to this day the very best Hollies collection around. It does cost a bit more but for me it was worth every penny.
So if you are thinking about picking up a Hollies collection I recommend you carefully compare each of these collections. Again, there is absolutely nothing wrong with "The Epic Anthology". The package contains an exceptionally well done 24 page booklet (better than the EMI package) that chronicles the history of the group. What it really comes down to is how fanatical a fan you are. In either case, you can not go wrong. The Hollies were one of the most talented and enduring groups to emerge from the British invasion. Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars the bus stop song didnt even stop at this lp so called ...........2002-10-31

three of their own track which i personally likes was not completed and not together in this lp so called THEIR ANTHOLOGY.. the bus stop for me is one of song that really gets me liking song, then not to include with long cool woman in black dress and air that i breath..come on give me a break,,twenty songs included but not the bus stop..then by august she wouldnt be mine insted, by december where cool and winter feel like when i found out that i got fooled by it, cause one of their lp includes everything i wish to be in one plus the other song i started liking it since having this cold-blooded cd i mistakenly bought insted of the other

3 out of 5 stars Uneven tribute to Buddy Holly.......2007-04-10

This was The Hollies' last proper album (aside from the maligned '83 reunion with Nash that had just 3 good tracks, and the recent "Staying Power", which had only one standout track, "Suspended Animation"), and also their second album to contain songs exclusively by one writer. Like the Dylan album, this would have been better if the best four tracks had been released as an E.P. instead of a full-fledged LP. The good ones are "I'm Gonna Love You Too", "Wishing", and the rockers "Midnight Shift", and Think It Over", which feature some good vocalizing by Allan Clarke. The remaining tracks are a bit too bland and unexciting. Not an LP to play repeatedly, but the four tracks mentioned are well-done covers and work well. The wishy-washy production tends to get in the way of the other tracks, as well as them being a bit too overly-familiar.
