5 out of 5 stars The Tea Party Collection.......2007-04-06

This is not a "Best Of". This is a collection of singles. It still manages to fall into the category of best music I own. The Tea Party were a very intense and talented group. They wrote songs that nobody else could. They had the musical talent to use more than 30 instruments on The Edges Of Twilight. They have the intensity to make a more industrial sounding album in Transmission. One that, as Jeff Martin has said, almost destroyed him. That is why you get sincere music from this trio. They don't write songs about something they don't know. They don't even write songs about something they haven't experienced in a long time. Jeff Martin wanted to make a dark record so he put himself into a dark place. Or maybe it was the other way around?

I like all of the songs. They are all incredible. I'm not going to bore you by listing the tracks and saying,"I like this one", every time because it's pointless. Just know as you read the background on each track that I say this coming from the perspective of a devoted fan who has never heard a Tea Party song that he didn't like or hasn't had an effect on him in some way. This is a run through of some of the songs in this collection. Either way, you will be surprised and rewarded when you listen to The Tea Party.

Walking Wounded was their most developed track. So much work went into it and the result is unbelievable. It was only released on this collection and as a single.

The Messenger is a song that was written by Daniel Lanois, who has been a producer for U2 on albums including The Joshua Tree. This is one of the only cases in recorded music where I think the cover is better than the original.

Psychopomp. There is so much to say about this song. It was the first Tea song I heard. It was the song that introduced me to this talented band. This remains to this day, the most gut-wrenchingly sad and intense song at the same time. Transmission = Intensity.

Sister Awake is a song off of The Edges of Twilight, the album that is considered by 99% of fans and the band themselves to be their best work. Enough said.

The Bazaar, like Sister Awake, is written around a heavy nucleus of Middle Eastern sounds and just plain ROCK. Again, of The Edges of Twilight.

Save Me was, I believe, their second or third single. It was off their first album, Splendor Solis which is a good mix of instrumentals, Middle Eastern Rock, and Blues. If you want to hear raw musicianship, this is the album and song for you. This is a remixed version that can only be found on this collection.

Heaven Coming Down is a masterpiece born from the recording sessions that created the melodic rock album that is TRIPtych.

The River. Their first single. Their first impression. The reason people call themselves fans of The Tea Party. Rock at it's finest. Raw musicianship. Middle Eastern influence. One of the best guitar solos you will ever here. This song is a masterpiece. Even if you don't want to pay for a CD now, if you give yourself the gift of this song, you will be falling over yourself trying to own The Tea Party's real collection.

There is much more to found of The Tea Party than this collection. Each song is an experience. The only way to enjoy The Tea Party fully is to own every one of their albums and to listen to them repeatedly. I've owned them all and have been listening to them for nearly a decade and I still find something new when I pull out one of their albums after a short break to another one. You will not be disappointed. You will not feel regret. You will thank the gods of music for placing this band into your CD player or mp3 player and you will pray for them to get back together so that you can see them live. They are a band whose live performances rose above those that were recorded onto CDs. The Tea Party are musicianship and intensity rolled into one. They are what every musician should strive to be. They are what music should be.

5 out of 5 stars Join the party...........2006-12-03

The Tea Party have had a measure of success in Canada and even Australia, but they never managed to grab the attention of the US market. I personally was exposed to them at a very young age by some of my family, who have seen them live on multiple occasions. And looking back at their wealth of talent and great material, I am puzzled by the fact that they never became huge. With such diversity in instrumentation, and a marketable image, The Tea Party really had everything plus that X factor that should have secured maximum penetration. Sadly they broke up recently, with Jeff Martin launching a solo career. Though gladly, it's been said that a regrouping could very well occur in the future. That said, this is Tangents: The Tea Party collection.

The first track, "Walking Wounded", was a big hit here in Canada, and you will know why. The Tea Party is known to incorporate middle eastern flavors into their music, and this works to great effect in this track. "Temptation" does the same thing, as with "Sister Awake", "The Bazaar", and "The River". They actually built their core audience in part by experimentation with different musical styles, and have been reported to have used 30 different instruments in the recording of their third album, Edges of Twilight. Stuart Chatwood(bass, keyboards, mandolin) has also done work with Ubi Soft Montreal, developers of the acclaimed Prince of Persia videogame series, where he adds that middle eastern flavor appropriate to the setting.

Jeff Martin(vocalist, writer, guitarist) has a unique sound to his voice, and really adds a darker texture to all of the songs. He infuses emotion into the lyrics so beautifully. He is truly one of the greatest voices in rock today. This compilation is a testament to his talent, and I still don't know why I haven't picked up his solo album yet.

The absolute best on the record are "Life Line", "Release", "The Messenger", and "Waiting on a Sign". The last three being softer and very heartfelt. You'll see some contrast of styles on Tangents, you won't be hearing any of the same thing being repeated over. It's definitely hard to define these guys, but Progress rock/alternative is probably the best way to describe them.

Definitely buy Tangents if you like rock music or just want something a bit different from everyone else.

4 out of 5 stars wolf-the truth.......2004-04-27

Sure some might think this is alittle early in the game
for this Canadian trio to be releasing a greatest hits package.
Considering they only have four albums under thier belt and one maxi single. But they defiently have had enough great songs.
And I don't think all of them made it on here.(Maybe it's based on actual hits from the canadian charts)
Especialy songs like "Angles"and"lullabye" from their newest album "interzone mantra"that was released after this colection. And thier up coming-sure to be another original masterpiece-album later this year(2004).
But what makes this a collectin worth getting is the previously unrelease "Walking wounded".A very well writen song for anybody thats been hurt And wants to ask "how does it feel baby now"
Then theirs the last three songs which are covers.

"waiting on a sign"A mellow love song telling a girl to make up her mind.I don't know who did the original but thier version is
simple but hipnotic.(one of my favriot songs lircly speaking)

I can't remamber if the next song is good or not.

Then their version of "paint it black" by the rollin stones.
It's even darker than the original with the lead singers deap growns. And if you like the tea partys sound it sure competes with the original feel that was intended.
This is the perfect song for them to cover.

I love the Tea partys sound, writing style, and the way they
they fuse rock with eastern sounds to make for a realy unigue

experiance. That you won't find anywhere else.
I wish America would take the wax out of their ears and give them a listen.True rock fans would not be disapointed!
An americain wants americains to go to:teaparty

5 out of 5 stars A Definite Must Own for the TP Newbie.......2001-10-23

I'll be honest with you, if you own all of their discs already it's a no brainer that at this point in the game, Tea Party has no business with a "Best-Of" album (let alone the plethora of re-mix type albums this band has already done) and you may as well stay clear of it because...well you have all that matters already! On the other hand, Tea Party in my opinion is one of the best out there and the disc is a must-have, especially if you haven't already checked them out. YOU MUST! Tea Party has some of the most unique, musically sound and innovative works that you'll hear in this genre, and I highly recommend this album as a "Get to know 'em, you'll love 'em disc", as it pulls some of their all time greatest and puts into a wonderful compilation cd. You simply must check out "Splendor Solis" if you haven't already though, as they have some of the best instrumental work to be heard in a long time!

3 out of 5 stars Kool Spooky Morrisonesque Medieval Sound.......2001-04-14

Original and Jim Morrison is back from the dead to sing vocals.

A good change of pace from anything out there.
