Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

Full Title - The Columbia Albums Of Irving Berlin Vols. 1 & 2. Composer, conductor, arranger Frank DeVol scored more than fifty movies and is best known as the composer for the theme songs for the TV series 'My Three Sons', 'The Brady Bunch' and 'Family Affair'. In the 1940s DeVol was an arranger for Dinah Shore, Tony Bennett, Rudy Vallee, Vic Damone and Doris Day. Frank DeVol received multiple Emmy Awards and Academy Award nominations for his extensive body of work. Instead of a Sopranos-style album loaded with evocative songs, this HBO-movie soundtrack offers Dave Grusin's workmanlike score. What might be appropriate in the context of Norman Jewison's domestic drama is a listening experience with limited appeal. That is, fans of Grusin's work as a smooth-jazzer will probably enjoy--or at least find unobtrusive--the likes of "I Did an Experiment" and the guitar-and-vibes-heavy "I'm Happy for You." Not that the composer has no flair for reflecting the drama of a moment; "Tom Goes to the Den" is a masterful limning of that early turning point. Other snippets, including the title track, could fit into any tasteful suburban-based film. As for the disc's two vocal tracks, star Dennis Quaid's "I'm in the Mood for Love" is the musical equivalent of an actor's wandering accent, while Crowded House's 1986 "Don't Dream It's Over" brings the truest emotion to be found here. --Rickey Wright
