Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Robbie Williams, a self-proclaimed casualty of the British boy-blitz Take That, scuffed his squeaky-clean image by rabble-rousing with Britpop troublemakers Oasis and reemerged as a part-James Bond, part-Frank Sinatra renaissance pop star. A little fast-living combined with his vocal charm, Williams's U.S. debut, The Ego Has Landed, offers a collection of cheeky, inescapably loveable songs served up with a nudge, a wink, and a pinch on the bum. --Beth Massa
Amazon.com
Robbie Williams was a teenage pop star in the U.K. as a member of Take That (think New Kids on the Block); his first solo album, Life Thru a Lens, tanked--until the single "Angels" was released and became a mega-hit. His follow-up album, I've Been Expecting You, spawned more hits--"Millennium," "Let Me Entertain You"--and, somewhat unexpectedly, transformed Williams from prefab pop star to artist. The Ego Has Landed, his U.S. debut, collects songs from his two prior British releases and lives up to the hype. Though he's still somewhat prefabricated, borrowing wholesale from Oasis (whose Liam Gallagher was an idol of Williams's), George Michael, the Pet Shop Boys (whose Neil Tennant cowrote and sings backup on "No Regrets"), and even Tom Jones, Williams injects plenty of his own personality--brash and bold but rarely bratty. He's a born entertainer, plain and simple--"Let Me Entertain You," which would fit in well on Tommy, is plenty campy but only somewhat tongue-in-cheek, and he makes no apologies for it. The one caveat here is that the album is front-loaded, with all of the hits coming in the first half--but there's also a good chance that you won't mind. --Randy Silver

One of the best , sadly unknown in the USA.......2006-11-10
I discovered Robbie through the fabulous song, "She's the one". I went on to discover that I actually like a lot of his stuff. I was gratified to see that he gave the best received performance at Live 8 last year. This was, unfortunately, followed by his reviled hip-hop-type release this year.
I can't understand how the rest of the USA never discovered this guy. I know that early Justin Timberlake fans would have eaten him up. And there are even a few songs here that Matchbox 20 fans might have bought into. Again I can only ask, what happened here?
Regardless, Thanks Robbie for what you have given us. A lot of people out there really enjoy your work. Even some of us in the USA!!
If a tree fell in the woods, and no one was around.............2006-04-08
What the heck happened? I remember listening to this CD five years ago and nodding to every song as my ears witnessed one pop materpiece after the other. I felt like I was listening to a greatest hits album. I know it's a combination of two albums, but still...pretty good stuff for two album's worth of material crunched into one amazing CD. So, now, here we are five years later, and, well, if I walked up to give or take 150 people and asked them if they knew who Robbie Williams was, 148 of them would say he was that funny guy in Mrs.Doubtfire. This should have been the biggest album of the past decade. I'm not a music critic, but I've been listening to all types of music for the past 30 or so years. I have to tell you..if you're checking this out, wondering whether or not to buy this album, then by all means, do it. Granted, Robbie Williams is his own worst enemy...he did cancel a show I went too, and apparently it wasn't the first show he's cancelled. He also called his video for Angels "Poo" on MTV. So, maybe he's just some one with an amazing voice but punk sensibilities(not refelected in his pop songs, though, just his attitude). I can respect that, but, if the record company's doing everything it can to promote you and you're just 'blow'ing it all and shoving your luck up your nose, or into your liver, then maybe you don't deserve what ever is on the golden platter that's in front of you. Hopefully some day he'll learn and get with it. I certainly hope so. If he lives long enough to pull through, and puts out another album as good as this one, then America will be given an amazing gift. Until then, the rest of the world is keeping an amazing well known secret to itself and Robbie Williams will be an enigma to the thirty or forty of us who hum his tunes on a daily basis. Heck, at least we don't have to put up with anyone joining in on a hum along. On second thought, keep drinking Robbie, you might be one of those obnoxious recovery people like Steven Tyler and end up playing half time in a space suit.
Did I mention?.......2005-11-13
That Robbie Williams is a TRUE ROCK STAR? He's ego personified, yet he can go in so many different directions. Now that's art. I think his next album "Sing While your Winning" is even better, but "Ego" is no slouch. "Angels" shows his sensitive side... "Millenium" is the jaded RW...but he still has enough humor left for a little tongue in cheek.
"Regrets," "Strong" and "Killing Me" are all classics in my book. It just goes to show that a boy band CAN introduce the world to a pop genius. RW is not afraid to show how smart he is and I love that.
Robbie Williams is a great great singer.......2005-06-07
His music unique and is a fun lad the reason america hardly heard of him is because the USA said he was to "camp" to grace the great american airwaves. I live near manchester in england and i just wrote this review because this guy is ment to be heard hes writen some amazing albums and if you ever met him in person im sure you'd fall in love with him male and female alike. dont know this guy before you try it hes the next best thing since oasis hit the market in the 90s.
Was I in a merciful mood tonight?.......2005-05-03
Maybe. I heard "Millenium" in a Burger King last Tuesday, and it drove me to depression for awhile. I went on a personal crusade to find out who did that song, and I almost took it out on the Backstreet Boys(Sorry Guys). I finally tracked it down here, and I started having daggers in my eyes "KILL KILL". However, there is a rather decent sound to this except for "Millenium" of course. However, it's not enough to make me go out and buy this. I will say though that I will hopefully download "Old Before I Die" off Napster someday as that is my favorite song off here. Maybe "One Of God's Better People" too, but a definite maybe. Well now that I found the culprit who did one of the songs that can make me helpless as a kitten, and sampled more of his music I can let go of this now as I have had my say, and that is: The Ego Has Landed in the water, and has drowned. Wait for this to go on sale for .99 cents.

Customer Reviews:
These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21
I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.
An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25
This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.
The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18
While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!
"many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Weird But Good.......2006-12-01
This is my first exposure to early Krautrock, as it is sometimes called. I've heard of Can for years but have never heard any of their music until I got this CD. I've read that their old singer, some Japanese guy, had a really unique voice that sort of defined them as a band. This is their first effort without him. That being said, I wouldn't know the difference. Taking this as my first exposure to Can, I like it. It seems to be a mix of electronica, rock, maybe jazz, and a German sensibility that I find intriguing. The most outstanding track to me is Hunters and Collectors as I can't get that phrase out of my head! The thick German accents in the vocals also add a unique touch to the music. Some great jams on this CD. Not a bad introduction to their music! Recommended.
Landed. I like it!.......2005-07-24
Well here is one of the most underrated Can albums in there discography. Landed is a very different album for Can but a very good one. When I first bought the cd and put it in the player I was shocked with what I heard and was wondering if this was the wrong cd put in a can package with a can label on the cd. Yes it's that different for them. But as it played I was really digging it. The opening song Full Moon On The Highway is a big rocking number that makes you want to bob your head and Micahel Karoli covers the lead vocals on this song as well for the other songs on the album. I love his german accent. Then it gets into Half Past One which is a very latin sounding song. A good drum beat with interesting keyboard effects and a good guitar line. Hunters And Collectors is a slow type basic song which is another winner on the album. Then we get to Vernal Equinox. The reason I bought this cd in the first place, well that and to keep adding to my Can colelction. The studio version here is very different then the live version I heard from the old grey whistle test on the Can DVD. Here they use tape manipulations and mix them into the song. Still really good. Red Hot Indians starts out with a drum beat that sounds like it came from an indian tribe. You'll be hooked on this song from start to finish. And for the last song on the album, the one reason I can't give this a full Five stars is Unfinished. All this is is a 13 minute noise collage piece that goes nowhere. I found it boring and usualy skip that track when it comes on. Fans might find it intersting to listen to but probably not everytime as I didn't. Well there is my review for Landed. I definetly think this is an essential album for your cd colelction but I wouldn't start with this one. Start with Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi or Future Days instead then after you get those three work your way to this one. You'll be glad you did. Excellent album.

Customer Reviews:
The Eagle Has Arrived!.......2000-02-23
This is an album I've been looking for for a long time, mainly on account of the "March." This is a rousing, military theme, stated early on in the "Main Title," but only cropping up in muted form for the rest of the album, most notably in "The Hounds." But it also recurs in unusual ways: in "Eagle Goes to Church," it's played on recorders, and in one cue, it's played on a church organ. It's a splendid theme, and I wish it could get fuller development somewhere other than the end credits.
A second theme is what the notes to the album call the "obsession" theme, a pouding, rhythmic pulse that occurs frequently throughout. A third motif is a trill on an instrument called a cymbalom. That's actually quite distinctive of this soundtrack -- it's easy to recall the poignant moments of the movie being punctuated by that unusual sound. There's also a love theme that's adequate, and unusual in that it features a whistler.
Schifrin's style sometimes seems a bit naive, I think. The rhythm of the military music seems a bit too obvious, and the use of dissonance is a little too frequent to make for pleasant listening. On those grounds, I think I'd cut the cues called "Steiner," "The Eagle's Bite (Part 2)," "The Eagle's Bite," and "Dogs." The latter features the piercing whistle with which the Donald Sutherland character tames the guard dogs at the end of the movie. I thought a human being probably couldn't make that noise, and it's horrible. It sounds like someone driving spikes into my ears. The rest of the cues are wonderful.
There are occasionally echoes of others of Schifrin's work. "The Eagle's Bite" sounds like the crazy person music from "Dirty Harry," for example, and "Flight of Eagles" features snare drums with high woodwinds that is reminiscent of the incidental music to "Mission: Impossible."
Overall, I'd give this soundtrack a high rating, but it loses a star for the dissonance, and particularly the awful noise in "Dogs."
GREAT SOUNDTRACK.......1999-11-09
I've always loved this flick and the music is really evocative and adventurous. The Main Title theme alone is worth the buy.

If you're a Saxon fan, you know how hot this is! If not, this might well be your key to the kingdom. Check this out & see if they're not one of the best metal bands ever! Smokin'!
One of the Best Live Heavy metal Albums You'll Ever Hear!.......2000-07-18
The first Saxon song I ever heard was "747(Strangers in the Night)". I loved it. Here, in the US, Saxon are very hard to find. I was overwhelmed with joy when i saw this cd in the heavy metal section of the store called "record town". I bought the cd, and when I put it on, I knew that it was worth all the 20 dollars I paid for it. This is the only live album I've heard that comes close to Judas Piest's 1979 live album Unleashed in the East. Every metal fan should have this cd(2 cd's), cause it rocks from start to finish! You won't be dissapointed!
GREAT WHITE BUFFALOW.......2000-05-09
I found this to be a real treat ,and would tell any true metal head to give it a try,you all won't be let down! This is a must for any cd collection, strike while the iron is hot!or you will miss out on a real great cd!Good luck!
Saxon Rules!.......1999-08-10
My first encouter with Saxon was 1982 when I listened to "Heavy Metal Thunder" from the album "Strong Arm of The Law." I remember that I was so impressed with their power and articulateness. Saxon still carry their power and HM spirit. Each piece on this CD is just great, but a real gem on this CD is "Denim and Leather" featuring Yngwie Malmsteen. The guilar solo battle of Denim and Leather among a virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, a talented veteran Paul Quinn, and a new face (not now, but at that time) Doug Scarrat is nothing but awesome! Saxon is my favorite NWOBHM band and has been one of the most popular HM bands in my home country (Japan) for a long time. I just don't understand why Saxon didn't become popular in the U.S. Highly recommended!
Top notch eighties metal........1999-07-11
Great sound and great songs I will diffently be checking out their back catalog. If you like memorable songs with great riffs, solos and choruses but not too intricate then Saxon are for you. I hope they have many years left in them.

top ten dub.......2001-10-31
Top ten of recent nu-dub CDs to come our way. Well worth a listen for fans of old skool ambient techno, 70s roots dub and new glitch sound.
excellent "Nu Dub".......2000-02-23
after hearing cuts here and there on various samplers, this full length cd is long awaited and excellent. anyone interested in vintage dub and/or vintage CAN, Moebius/Plank, and/or recent dub/electronica, should look into this. mellow but deep, real instrumentation and great studio workings. highly recommended by a fan of all the above.
A Five Star Single.......2000-02-16
I gave this CD five stars but what I really meant was to give the single Worldwide Watchdog Peepshow five stars. I can't recommend the CD as a whole since that's the only song I've heard (ahem... are you listening Amazonians, I'm saying I want some audio clips). Anyway, I got a hold of the single on the FunkingFusion two CD sampler set which I can and do highly recommend. Its sort of a dubby chilled out slightly reggae influenced version that's good for lounging to.

Album Description
Saxon's 1979 debut already hinted that a diamond in the rough was to emerge. Their second recording, Wheels Of Steel, tuned into a mega seller as Saxon went on to tour the world. The successor, Strong Arm Of The Law, and especially their double platinum release Denim And Leather (1981) reinforced Saxon's reputation. Tours of America, an appearance at the Monsters Of Rock festival in Castle Donington, and the live album The Eagle Has Landed (1982) (according to Melody Maker "one of the best live recordings of the decade") followed. Power And Glory (1983) was another classic that caused a stir, particularly in the States. Crusader (1984), oriented towards the US radio charts, was greeted by the odd critical voice that complained about Saxon's supposed mainstream ambitions. Innocence Is No Excuse in particular met with mixed reactions. "Our Def Leppard album," was Biff's retrospective comment on this unusually melodic recording. Rock The Nation and Destiny also faced fair to middling reviews. "Record company and management tried to gear us towards the American market," Biff explains the Saxon sound of those days. Following a two-year break, the band returned in 1990 with a new record contract and their impressive comeback, Solid Ball Of Rock. The two subsequent releases, Forever Free and Dogs Of War, and the ensuing tour kept the band on their toes, while Saxon succeeded in consolidating their impressive live reputation. Their 1996 live album, The Eagle Has Landed II, followed by Unleash The Beast and Metalhead, proved that the band were ready to face the new millennium, as they went on to release Killing Ground, their best-of release, Heavy Metal Thunder, the latest studio album Lionheart, and their first DVD, The Saxon Chronicles. Now they're proud to present the double live CD The Eagle Has Landed Pt. III, the latest release by a band with the heart of a lion.

ALL THE CLASSICS MAKES IT A MUST. THE
THIRD LIVE IS A MUST FOR ALL NEW AND
OLD FANS. SIDE ONE WITH ALL THE CLASSICS
AND SIDE TWO WITH NEWER MATERIAL SOME OF
WHICH I NEVER HEARD AND I THINK IT'S JUST
AS GOOD AS THE CLASSIC MATERIAL. THIS IS
FOR ANY SAXON OR HARD ROCK FAN! CLASSIC.
Esencial.......2006-11-25
Thanks Nigel!.......2006-07-27
This long time expected CD has fulfilled my expectations. I am so pleased to hear the "red baron" Nigel Glockler again with Saxon, to me, his work on drums is the trademark of the classic Saxon sound. "This town rocks" and "Frozen rainbow" are two of the songs that Nigel makes great contribution. Paul Quinn's heavy guitar sounds excellent, particulary on "Suzie hold on" and "To hell and back again". Biff has kept his voice through the years and sounds agressive and powerful. On the second CD features Jorg Michael that played drums on the Lionheart CD, and most of this second CD features songs of this one. It's great , though I wished they could have included one or two songs from Metalhead such as the title track and "Song of evil".
Great old school NWBHM.......2006-07-04
This is a wonderful live album. It has no filler all the great hard rockin songs from Saxon's past and present. I was suprised that how fresh it sounds when compiled from so many different shows. Great CD for a long drive.
SAXON FOREVER!.......2006-07-02
ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS CAN ULTIMATELY BE ONE OF THE TOP TEN LIVE ALBUMS EVER! SAXON WILL ALWAYS RULE!
