I just can't keep still when Freebird is playing. The whole CD is fantastic encouraging lots of "air guitar" and imaginary drums to be played.

If your idea of the South is a place where white boys rock the blues all night long, then Goin' South will most definitely take you there. From the Allman Brothers' "Ramblin' Man" to the Georgia Satellites' "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," this 17-track collection of '70s and '80s hits is the next best thing to 24-hour Southern rock radio. Like a convoy of golden eight-track memories, the signature songs of rebel rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd, George Thorogood, and Charlie Daniels are accompanied by a handful of lesser offerings (that Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, Marshall Tucker stretch is slow goin') and north-of-the-Mason-Dixon-line ringers such as Mountain and the Band. Sure, the vibe is strictly good ole boy (unless you count Ram Jam's version of Leadbelly's "Black Betty"), but any compilation that can segue from the pop strains of Pure Prairie League's "Aime" to the crunchy goodness of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" can't be all bad. --Bill Forman

4 out of 5 stars Southern Rock Extravaganza.......2003-05-09

You can't get any further south than "Goin' South". Seventeen tracks of classic hits from the greatest Southern Rockers found anywhere. The gang is all here, Marshall Tucker, Molly Hatchet, Georgia Satellites, Little Feet, The Allman Brothers, Lynard Skynyrd, and the Charlie Daniels Band. This is one of the better Southern Rock collections that I've seen. The music is good, even though I would have picked a few different songs to represent the bands on this album. Overall, I like the songs, and the bands. This is one of those CDs you plug in and let it rip for a good ol' time. This is a good compilation, no doubt. You'll be in the south in no time.

3 out of 5 stars Goin' South Vol. 2.......2007-01-12

Although the choice of artists was very good, the style of music not my favorite.

2 out of 5 stars Goin' South, Vol.2.......2006-03-06

After Vol.1 I was very disapointed in Vol.2. I expected different songs.

2 out of 5 stars "Can't You See" is edited down to 3 minutes.......2003-05-27

The original version is over 6 minutes. I bought this collection for that song. Very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Good Mix.......2002-03-21

Goin' South, Vol. 2 is a good mix of Southern rock feel. I too had a hard time when I looked at all the bands but when you listen, you'll understand that Southern Rock is more of a style and genre within the rock genre than it is purely Southern bands or groups.

I think the feel of all the music is what they are after and I love the music. If you want a good mix of that good old Southern Rock feel, go for it. If you want authentic Southern-only bands, don't do it! Regardless, not a bad mix at all...

5 out of 5 stars A rich sound melded around twin, lead slide guitars.......2005-01-12

Delta Moon, an Atlanta-based outfit melded around twin, lead slide guitars, offers rock-tinged blues and roots music that never go over the top or scream "boogie" in your face. In that respect, this quintet is much more closely aligned with Peter Green's Splinter Group---though not as cold-sounding as that blues outfit---than with southern icons such as the Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynrd.

Guitarists Tom Gray (former main man for the brains but not the bluegrass bass player of the same name) and Mark Johnson create a wonderful tone when they merge and neither seems to crowd the other. This musical symbiosis yields a rich sound that is both crisp and greasy at times but never sloppy. Bolster this element with Gina Leigh's right-on vocals, and punchy, charged up rhythm section, a sprinkling of bright piano, and Vassar Clement's cameo fiddle on Stone Cold Man, Delta Moon is a force to be reckoned with (or with which to be reckoned for those preposition purists out there).

This set contains a mixture of strongly original tracks and creative covers---including the memorable title track, which is an R.L. Burnside tune, and a great rendering of Nightclubbing by David Bowie and Iggy Pop. "Goin' Down South" may be one of the best unheralded, deserves-to-be-heard releases hiding out there.

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from Delta Moon (God bless them!).......2004-10-01

What a fantastic album! Delta Moon is, from my point of view, the more interesting modern blues band around. I've been lucky enough to watch them play live during their recent tour in UK, and they played beautifully! What a fantastic night it was! Their third album, which follows a previous studio recording and a live one, not only confirms their qualities, actually it should bring them the attention they deserve both from critics and the public. The combination of the two slide guitarists, Tom Gray and Mark Johnson, and the marvellous vocal performance of Gina Leigh, not forgetting the solid rhythm section provided by Scott Callison on drums and Jon Schwenke on bass, makes their music rise to a different level unachieved before. True blues deeply rooted in the tradition but modern at the same time with a touch of rock and pop, played with feeling, excellent skills and plenty of soul. If you love blues as I do, well my friends this is the right CD for you. For me the best 2004 issue so far! I like it so much that I'd like to rate it 7 stars!! (I've never rated a CD 7 star before, however this one is so good...that I cannot help it!). Pick it up and enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for dance..........2000-12-30

My mother, teaching a ballet class of 3 and 4 year olds, was set to the task of trying to find music for "tightrope walkers," going along with the whole circus theme of the recital taking place in June. This CD was perfect, not just for her class, but also for three other teachers looking for songs! The songs are fun, funny, and adorable sounding, capturing the "sounds of the circus" in its many parts truly well.

          Album Description

Goin' Down South Blues Sampler Vol. 2 is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Inside Sounds release Goin' Down South Blues Sampler, a collection of contemporary Mid-South blues artists. Opening with Robert "Wolfman" Belfour's "Old Black Mattie," Vol. 2 is a comprehensive blues journey from the stark sounds of the Mississippi Delta to the electric blues of Beale Street. Most of the 17 tracks have never been released before and represent the heart and soul of Memphis blues. Phill Durham, from the legendary Memphis band Molloch, is heard on this CD for the first time as a solo artist. Rare performances from Big Lucky Carter, Mose Vinson, and Willie Foster are also included. Doc Tomato's "I've Kissed My Last Ass" is an absolute riot, and the Richard Johnston/Jessie Mae Hemphill collaboration is a gem. The 6-page booklet includes artist descriptions along with contact information. The CD was compiled for release by Billy Gibson and Eddie Dattel.

          Album Description

'Goin'Down South Blues Sampler' has been prduced in conjunction with the Visualizing the Blues photography exhibition. The CD represents Southern blues from traditional delta slide-guitar blues to more contemporary electric blues like The Daddy Mack Blues Band. Produced by Inside Sounds of Memphis, the CD features R.L. Burnside, Sandy Carroll, junkyardmen, Billy Gibson, Blind Mississippi Morris, Last Chance Jug Band, Lorette Velvette, Bobby Little, Jason Freeman, David Evans,Danny Lancaster, and Mose Vinson. The songs represent an interesting mix of blues styles and instrumentation. The touring exhibition will open in Austin, Texas, on January 18. While the photographs at the exhibition display the culture and environment from where the blues was born, 'Goin' Down South' is a blues compilation intended to satisfy blues lovers and maybe convert a few nonbelievers to this timeless American expression.
