Album Description

Rock-against-Rock pioneers Sleepytime Gorilla Museum celebrate the extremes of sonic debilitation, with this muffled cry into the dark night of the soul. Triumphantly smothered within the intricate stylings of musical evolution, the expansive world of literature and the pain and passion of one's emotions, the Oakland, California-based band have once again imbedded themselves deep in the creative process, allowing themselves to reach new plateaus on their latest album `In Glorious Times.' The band - known for their expressive and wildly entertaining theatrical live shows - gives justice to their eclectic music in the live forum and plan to stay on the road for the most of 2007.

4 out of 5 stars Glorious indeed.......2007-07-05

This is my first exposure to Sleepytime. Without a doubt, this is eclectic and intense music. At first, it's pretty overwhelmingly sporadic (in a good way). They mesh all different genres into a continuous flowing expression. There is a consistent mobility to the sound, sometimes drastic drops to quiet parts or abrupt returns to intensity. Some of these transitions are smooth and absolutely electrifying, some a little less interesting. SGM are great at mixing genres, sometimes better than others. The avant garde aspect is legitimate and honest, truly convincing. Oftentimes it will sound very Zappa or Mr Bungle-esque (especially in the vocals). One of the best aspects to this CD is the diverse instrumentation, definitely not your average metal band sound. I don't know who the female singer is but she is amazing, and at some points makes the album. Also they have sick aspects of carnival cliches, that work appropriately. My favorite tracks: Widening Eye and Angle of Repose. The best parts of the CD are the droning complex chord changes in the quiet(er) sections. Overall in a landscape of infinite mediocrity and boring ambiguous expression, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is actually doing something with their sound. I'm impressed, definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars SGM continues to impress.......2007-06-26

This album spans more genres than any I've ever heard, and does so fluidly and naturally. The progressive moments never get corny, the metal moments are intense, and there are plenty of melodic moments that give this record some beauty. This album flows from start to finish very well. I never felt like skipping or cutting off any track. Definitely well worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is in glorious times.......2007-06-03

How to describe this... the entire album is really one long song, like Of Natural History, but this "song" is much more cohesive than before. And each "movement" (track) has a heavy or loud moment, which makes the dynamics quite impressive. Even though it's more cohesive, you can actually expect more genres, including black metal, jazz, funk, psychadelic, shoegazer, funk, grind, classical, doom, industrial, etc. Another thing, that even though the album is heavier than anything they've ever made, it's also more melodic with even more of the beautiful voice of Carla Kihlstedt. Violin is also more prevalent. Another important note, there is much less ambience from before, it's still there, but in concise doses that do not interrupt listening. Instead, you're given short clips of phone recordings of or about Pers, Nils' brother who died recently. RIP, it's horrible when great people die.

Favorites of mine off the album include: The Companions, Puppet Show, Formicary, The Ossuary, Salt Crown, The Only Dance, The Greenless Wreath, Widening eye.

Definitely tied with my current albums of the year.

4 out of 5 stars something is missing..........2007-06-01

In one word... Moe!

don't get me wrong, I love this album but Moe!'s influence was bigger than I realized. I liken it to post-Mufti Einsturzende Neubauten, still great music but not so groundbreaking. The disc is solid through and through but the "industrial percussion" is now minimal and the drumming is VERY rock-n-roll and 'in your face'. It seems that this is an improvement for most listeners but I prefered it the other way around.

I suppose if you come at this band from the over-used "Bungle" reference then you'll think it's the best thing since sliced bread. If you see SGM as more of a blend of Swans, Neubauten, and Jacques Brel then it might seem a tad flat in comparison to previous SGM.

"In Glorious Times" is still a cut above the majority of music I buy.

4 out of 5 stars From a non-fan...wow!.......2007-05-31

"In Glorious Times" is my first encounter with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, a band whose music and lyrics are much more passionate and serious than their name would imply. Defining the band's sound is no laughing matter either. Drawing influences from every conceivable corner of the music landscapes, this band is near-impossible to define or label. At times they can sound like the better moments of Mars Volta, before anthem-ing it up a bit and going the route of Dream Theater. But before you know it, they've thrown another curve in your direction, and it sounds like you're listening to an entirely different genre of music altogether (Metal to be precise). While it's a bit cliched nowadays to call your band "undefinable," to say that you break musical boundaries, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is one of the few bands I've actually heard that fulfill such a boast. If "In Glorious Times" is on thing, it is proof of that.

"Angle of Repose" utilizes angular guitars and frantic violins to accompany the beautiful female vocals. When the female vocalist sings "I buried the dead and they came up stories. I planted the stories, they grew up singing" it is unbelievably effective. It's even more effective when she later moan/growls the same line, crossing into Bjork territory in the process. It is avant-garde to be sure! The epic gothic-opera styling of "Puppet Show" only goes to further emphasize this point, with it's powerful vocals and creepy pianos.

The sort of talent displayed in these two songs is apparent throughout the album. The drums, guitar, and bass guitar on this album are also incredible, as can clearly be seen in tracks like "Salt Crown" and "The Ossuary." More often than not, complex orchestration is added into the songs to further accentuate the terrific instrumentation. In "The Greenless Wreath" for example, the song begins on a low note before being catapulted into the stratosphere by an amazingly composed string score.

My only real complaint with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is the bass-heavy, guitar-driven style of music that they often fall back on. Personally, I have never been a fan of this style of music. However, I have much respect for the band for separating themselves from the hordes of untalented metal bands out there today. "In Glorious Times" is a phenomenal achievement for any band of any genre! I highly recommend this album to fans of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and for people who have yet to hear the band, but have strong feelings for the metal and avant-garde rock genre. I cannot see how one could be disappointed by such an effort.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT WORSHIP ALBUM.......2007-03-08

This is a great worship album which really has some deep songs. The tracks that are my favorites are #4: "Jesus paid it all", #8: "Your never let go" and #11: "Your are my joy". #13: "Our God reigns", is the reason I bought the album. The song has simple lyrics, but the words which are repeated are profound: Our God reigns x2 forever your Kingdom reigns.
I really recommend purchasing this album!

3 out of 5 stars Review based on using in church.......2007-01-05

I typically buy this type of album to aid in worship leading at my church, so my review is based on how much I like the songs, as well as on whether I felt that I could use the songs in service. So, if you're looking for a review on the actual musical performance, this isn't it.

Awesome is the Lord Most High - I like the tune for this one and will probably use it in a worship service soon.

Glorious - This song was ok, but not too spectacular in my books. I do like the slowed-down chorus and might use it for tie-ins/transitions between songs, but that is all.

Party - Didn't do much for me. Probably part of it is because it's not exactly in my personality...I really couldn't see myself leading this song (it feels more like a performance-type of song)

Jesus Paid It All - Personality-wise, this song is much more up my alley. I really appreciate incorporating hymns into a service. While this is not one that I have led in service, this track brought it back into my mind, and I plan to lead it in the future. I think, however, that I might just stick with the original hymn instead of also using the bridge (why is it that, lyrically, many bridges contain so little?)

All We Need - Not sure why, but Charlie Hall has never really done it for me. The chorus from this song has stuck in my head, however. Won't be singing it when I lead worship.

Center - I like this one better than the previous, and I might actually lead this one in our service.

We Are Yours - I actually liked the beginning of this song. Probably use the "we are Yours" line as a transition or something to that effect (I know, there are only three words in that part...I'm not hating on bridges/choruses, just wondering aloud in my stream of consciousness).

You Never Let Go - I like a lot of Matt Redman's material. This song is one that I enjoy, and might lead at my church.

I Stand Amazed - A hymn sung in half-time. :) that is all

Everything Glorious - This song is ok. Melodically, I like the chorus better than the verse.

You Are My Joy - A little too minor for use in my church. When I think about this song, it makes me think of Delirious' "My Glorious" and the response that I got for that.

We Win - For a song that is celebratory and victorious lyrically, the body of this song didn't make me feel all that triumphant. Maybe it's the fact that he doesn't shout until the interlude-y part of the song, and when he's singing the lyrics that talk about shouting, it's the low and growly part of the melody.

Our God Reigns - A powerfully sung chorus that, while simple, communicates an awesome message. Dynamically, moving from instruments to a capella and back gives it a lot of feeling. I'll definitely be using this.

1 out of 5 stars Looking for something different.......2006-11-04

I was cautiously hopeful for more originality in this release, and disappointed to find very little. I listened to this once and haven't seen the disc since. I appreciated the attempt at writing more songs that involve everyone, not just me and my experience. But beyond that, the CD left me wanting something fresh musically and lyrically, some different integrated musical styles and in general, a sense of diversity.

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

This is a terrific CD. The music is breathtaking. Just buy IT !!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2001-10-31

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

5 out of 5 stars Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

Although the music is good, the video part is ok, why does Joan Jett albums keep going in and out of print? It's ridiculous. These are probably her 2 best cds.

In addition to playing the lead role, he wrote, directed and composed many memorable pieces of music including "What Kind of Fool Am I", "Once I In a Lifetime", "Gonna Build a Mountain", and many, many more. His genious is well defined in this piece, it's a joy.

4 out of 5 stars a classic score of the 60's.......2005-04-27

STOP THE WORLD - I WANT TO GET OFF is one of the most fascinating musical theatre scores of the 1960s, the `new-style musical' was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and was largely tailored to Newley's vocal style.

Rarely has the score been bettered than on the original Broadway cast album, crisply reissued here on the Decca Broadway label. Anthony Newley and his pert leading lady, underrated British performer Anna Quayle, perform the score with flash and verve. The entire score is fantastic though the penultimate number "Someone Nice Like You" must count as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written for the musical stage.

Anna Quayle is a marvellous performer, sadly only really remembered for her role as the Baroness in the movie of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (a role that is great but does not represent all she was capable of), and Anthony Newley, who also headed the London company to perhaps ever greater acclaim, is in his element.

A top cast album.

5 out of 5 stars Great musical with great classic songs.......2003-07-13

This Bricusse-Newley musical is still fresh today. Some of the songs are classic. They include "What Kind of Fool am I" and "Once in a Lifetime". Newley's voice and vocal range was at its height when this album was recorded. If you like the music in this show then you will also like the music from "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd".

5 out of 5 stars NOT ALONE ANYMORE.......2002-10-03

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKE HIM, SILLY ME . THIS WAS MY SECOND ALBUM I BOUGHT OF HIS ,IN A LONG LIST . NEWLEY'S STRONG VOICE AND PERSONALITY ARE THE VERY BEST.

YOU CAN ALMOST SEE THAT VERY EXPESSIVE FACE OF HIS, IT WA SA SHAME HIS PERFORMANCE WAS NOT CAPTURED ON FILM, STILL EVEN WITH OUT SEEING HIM. THE BLENDING OF SONG AND STORY ARE TIME LESS, THAT IT COULD BE ON BROADWAY TODAY WITHOUT BEING DATED.

THE STORY OF LITTLE CHAP AND EVIE , COULD BE ANY ONE OF US GOING THROUGH LIFE'S UP AND DOWNS.

5 out of 5 stars Anthony Newley's Finest Hours!.......2002-09-25

To say that 'Stop the World' was a revolutionary musical in the days of sugar and spice, nicey-nicey musicals would be an understatement. To suggest that Anthony Newley was one of the finest singer-songwriter-performers of our time would be like saying the Pope is Catholic. To say that Decca has done us all a favour by finally reissuing this tuneful cast recording on CD would however be ACCURATE!
Anthony Newley died in April 1999 after losing his battle with cancer. The battle of fame he never lost and left behind a wonderful collection of musicals, songs, tv and cabaret performances that we can love again and again. But the finest of all of Newley's output was this musical. Co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley made the role of Littlechap totally his own. Not even Sammy Davis Jnr, Joel Gray or Tony Tanner in the film version could match that unique quality of style and originality that Newley exudes in this fantastic tour de force role.
For fans of musicals unfamiliar with Newley's work, you will not be sorry when you buy this CD. For Newley fans - why haven't you already bought your copy!!
Enjoy, one and all, Anthony Newley at his very best.

From the Label

Sacred marks John McDermott's first recording with the Irish Tenors since rejoining fellow original member Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright (who actually replaced McDermott in 2000). The Irish Tenors live up to their reputation as "gifted interpreters" with this collection, covering a wide range of spiritual material. Sacred was produced by the Irish Tenors' long-time musical director, Arnie Roth, who has also worked with Charlotte Church, Diana Ross, and Art Garfunkel. The album was produced in Prague at the Rudlofinum and ICN Studios.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond words ..........2007-03-22

Having only recently discovered The Irish Tenors, nothing here was a repeat to me. And, even if it was, I can't imagine being disappointed.

If you are open to the idea that music can be a vehicle for a moment of sublime and sacred ecstacy, that may help convey what I find difficult to put into words.

While I live continuously and constantly in Our Father's presence, a music album such as this can certainly heighten the moment with Him.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent voices, songs and arrangements.......2006-06-17

This is an extraordinary collection. The songs are irresistible, the voices incredibly powerful and filled with appropriate emotion, and the orchestra is very simply great. You'll want to buy this album for others. Simply beautiful. A pure joy.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best album.......2006-02-27

For the most part this is an enjoyable collections of sacred music. However the inclussion of "Lord of the Dance" and other modern tunes are dreary no matter who sings them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !!.......2005-10-26

I recently went to a concert to hear The Irish Tenors. They did several songs from this CD and it was great. If you like John McDermott as much I do then you must have this CD. This is a triple good CD with 3 top tenors.

I enjoyed most of the music. My main complaint is the repeated songs from John McDermott's Faithfullness CD. For us fans of John the repeats seem a bit too much. I think there are six reteats.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious Encounter!.......2006-04-07

This CD is another beautiful example of a diverse, anointed and powerful worship experience. The songs on this release (from 2004) are also excellent and many are powerful corporate worship songs.

The standout songs are "The More I Seek You" (which we sing), "Running" and "My Romance". The only drawback to this CD is the beginning. On the CD it starts with the song "Glorious" and it seems like you come in on the worship time in the middle and so it takes longer than Overtaken to get into.

The answer to this mystery is on the DVD where their is another song first which is so powerful and begins the worship time with an incredible anointing. The other amazing part of the DVD is the spontaneous song "Every Nation." On the CD it cuts off at about 5 minutes, but the DVD shows this incredible spontaneous worship time in its entirety as it goes on for over 15 minutes! This is truly the most powerful part of this project. Watch the DVD first and then you'll enjoy the CD even more!

5 out of 5 stars The most amazing series of worship songs I have ever heard........2006-02-20

This is the single most beautiful and pure CD of worship I have ever heard. Every song on here is gorgeous and glorifying to Jesus Christ. If you are a Christian, I can not recommend this to you enough.

Seriously.. it rocks.

Highest recommedation possible.

5 out of 5 stars Really is glorious!.......2005-03-13

My mom bought this CD/DVD and I have been listening to it for days now. It is wonderful! Probably the best CFNI CD I have so far, even though I like all of the other 6 we have. I love how almost every song is original, and written by CFNI students and alumni. I wish we could have been there for that recording - as we were there for 3 of the other ones.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of Parkening's Finest.......2007-01-16

A beautiful and contemplative solo guitar recording of hymns, spirituals and other sacred works such as Mozart's Laudate Dominum and Humperdinck's Evening Prayer. Parkening is in exceptional form, the transcriptions are superb, and the recording itself is of the highest quality. Little wonder this has been an enduring classic since its release in the early 1980s.

5 out of 5 stars Music that perfectly touches the soul ..........2005-10-24

Christopher Parkening is the most musically inventive person playing the classical guitar today; you must purchase this CD if you haven't already. It contains exquisitely beautiful hymns & sacred music (arranged perfectly for guitar, I might add) along with Mr. Parkenings masterful transcriptions of works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Humperdinck.

Above all, this is music that glorifies God and that was the ultimate purpose of creating this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The end of a Search.......2005-09-23

Classsical guitar is among the top forms of music and Christopher Parkeniong is one of the greatestartists in this genre, if not the best. I had despaired at ever findinding the CD "Simple Pleasures" and was so very pleased to locate it . I am so enjoying it now. I will be back for more as funds permit.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, yet delightful, Gifts!.......2005-02-21

This was one of the first CD's I purchased back in 1988, and I bought it on a whim. Of the hundreds of CD's I now own, including many genres, this one remains in my list of top 10 favorites for a number of reasons.

1. Mr. Parkening plays every song on it with remarkable technical excellence and clearly discernible passion.
2. It includes classical, folksy, and reflective material, which could create a rough flow, but Mr. Parkening moves deftly from mood to mood leaving the listener with a sense of seamless transitions.
3. Although the songs on it are all religious classics they are played without pretense, which makes it accessible to any listener and uplifting for those seeking spiritual refreshment.

In closing, the is one thing "wrong" with this CD is it's too short!

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite & Divine.......2001-02-17

This treasure chest holds such jewels! The cd rushes in with the joyous energy of Bach's Praludium, allows you to reflect and catch your breath on Pritchard's Hyfrydol and Variation, and flows forward with the grace and underlying passion that makes this a precious favorite.

3 out of 5 stars Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15

Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.

Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.

Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.

Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.

However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.

5 out of 5 stars Great circus music.......2005-08-12

I needed some circus music to promote a fundraiser our Lion's club was having (a circus). I got the CD on time and it sounded great. I could not find this type of music anywhere else. Thanks.

3 out of 5 stars Good music, mediocre playing.......2001-11-19

It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Circus Spectacular.......2000-12-07

Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.

5 out of 5 stars Circus Spectacular.......2000-08-12

This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a recording I can sing along with!.......2006-11-04

As a low bass and wannabe octavist, I really enjoy singing along with this recording. Luckily, I have performed the Rachmaninov "All Night Vigil", Tchaikovshy "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom", and other works in Old Church Slavonic, so the words are mostly familiar.

I still find it amazing that these singers can make notes in the midrange still sound low! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Good Music from Russia.......2005-07-21

This CD is very good for those who like orthodox music. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-03-02

I have done a good bit of research on basso profundo's, contrabasses, etc and these guys seem to be lower than any I've heard. The soloist on "Do Not Reject Me In My Old Age" has a full voiced G1, below low bass C which he hits a number of times on the CD. Very amazing recording... good musically, not the VERY best choir I've ever heard or anything, but definetly good. Russian music is great, many of the tracks are very dark musically, but there are some more majestic tracks, and a few tracks that sound kinda militaristic.

5 out of 5 stars Well Below the Bass Range.......2002-01-15

The music on this CD won't be to everyone's liking, but the unique sound of the voice of a "basso profundo" or "octavist"
is a musical rarity that shouldn't be missed. These basses have a gripping effect, with a timbre resembling that of an organ's pedal tones. These basses can sing the low A below the bass range. They are, simply, extraordinarily powerful voices. Savor the unearthly sound of them. Who knows - you might just get to like Russian polyphonic liturgical chant, as well.
