Album Description
Rock-against-Rock pioneers Sleepytime Gorilla Museum celebrate the extremes of sonic debilitation, with this muffled cry into the dark night of the soul. Triumphantly smothered within the intricate stylings of musical evolution, the expansive world of literature and the pain and passion of one's emotions, the Oakland, California-based band have once again imbedded themselves deep in the creative process, allowing themselves to reach new plateaus on their latest album `In Glorious Times.' The band - known for their expressive and wildly entertaining theatrical live shows - gives justice to their eclectic music in the live forum and plan to stay on the road for the most of 2007.Customer Reviews:

SGM continues to impress.......2007-06-26
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is in glorious times.......2007-06-03
Favorites of mine off the album include: The Companions, Puppet Show, Formicary, The Ossuary, Salt Crown, The Only Dance, The Greenless Wreath, Widening eye.
Definitely tied with my current albums of the year.
something is missing..........2007-06-01
don't get me wrong, I love this album but Moe!'s influence was bigger than I realized. I liken it to post-Mufti Einsturzende Neubauten, still great music but not so groundbreaking. The disc is solid through and through but the "industrial percussion" is now minimal and the drumming is VERY rock-n-roll and 'in your face'. It seems that this is an improvement for most listeners but I prefered it the other way around.
I suppose if you come at this band from the over-used "Bungle" reference then you'll think it's the best thing since sliced bread. If you see SGM as more of a blend of Swans, Neubauten, and Jacques Brel then it might seem a tad flat in comparison to previous SGM.
"In Glorious Times" is still a cut above the majority of music I buy.
From a non-fan...wow!.......2007-05-31
"Angle of Repose" utilizes angular guitars and frantic violins to accompany the beautiful female vocals. When the female vocalist sings "I buried the dead and they came up stories. I planted the stories, they grew up singing" it is unbelievably effective. It's even more effective when she later moan/growls the same line, crossing into Bjork territory in the process. It is avant-garde to be sure! The epic gothic-opera styling of "Puppet Show" only goes to further emphasize this point, with it's powerful vocals and creepy pianos.
The sort of talent displayed in these two songs is apparent throughout the album. The drums, guitar, and bass guitar on this album are also incredible, as can clearly be seen in tracks like "Salt Crown" and "The Ossuary." More often than not, complex orchestration is added into the songs to further accentuate the terrific instrumentation. In "The Greenless Wreath" for example, the song begins on a low note before being catapulted into the stratosphere by an amazingly composed string score.
My only real complaint with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is the bass-heavy, guitar-driven style of music that they often fall back on. Personally, I have never been a fan of this style of music. However, I have much respect for the band for separating themselves from the hordes of untalented metal bands out there today. "In Glorious Times" is a phenomenal achievement for any band of any genre! I highly recommend this album to fans of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and for people who have yet to hear the band, but have strong feelings for the metal and avant-garde rock genre. I cannot see how one could be disappointed by such an effort.

Review based on using in church.......2007-01-05
Awesome is the Lord Most High - I like the tune for this one and will probably use it in a worship service soon.
Glorious - This song was ok, but not too spectacular in my books. I do like the slowed-down chorus and might use it for tie-ins/transitions between songs, but that is all.
Party - Didn't do much for me. Probably part of it is because it's not exactly in my personality...I really couldn't see myself leading this song (it feels more like a performance-type of song)
Jesus Paid It All - Personality-wise, this song is much more up my alley. I really appreciate incorporating hymns into a service. While this is not one that I have led in service, this track brought it back into my mind, and I plan to lead it in the future. I think, however, that I might just stick with the original hymn instead of also using the bridge (why is it that, lyrically, many bridges contain so little?)
All We Need - Not sure why, but Charlie Hall has never really done it for me. The chorus from this song has stuck in my head, however. Won't be singing it when I lead worship.
Center - I like this one better than the previous, and I might actually lead this one in our service.
We Are Yours - I actually liked the beginning of this song. Probably use the "we are Yours" line as a transition or something to that effect (I know, there are only three words in that part...I'm not hating on bridges/choruses, just wondering aloud in my stream of consciousness).
You Never Let Go - I like a lot of Matt Redman's material. This song is one that I enjoy, and might lead at my church.
I Stand Amazed - A hymn sung in half-time. :) that is all
Everything Glorious - This song is ok. Melodically, I like the chorus better than the verse.
You Are My Joy - A little too minor for use in my church. When I think about this song, it makes me think of Delirious' "My Glorious" and the response that I got for that.
We Win - For a song that is celebratory and victorious lyrically, the body of this song didn't make me feel all that triumphant. Maybe it's the fact that he doesn't shout until the interlude-y part of the song, and when he's singing the lyrics that talk about shouting, it's the low and growly part of the melody.
Our God Reigns - A powerfully sung chorus that, while simple, communicates an awesome message. Dynamically, moving from instruments to a capella and back gives it a lot of feeling. I'll definitely be using this.
Looking for something different.......2006-11-04

Amazon.com essential recording
The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
Mad about Baroque.......2007-02-12
The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21
Brilliant.......2001-10-31
These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.
Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20
This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.
A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.
it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.
Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30
An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.
Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

Stop the World I Want to Get Off, Broadway cast.......2005-09-04
Dottie Conlon
a classic score of the 60's.......2005-04-27
Rarely has the score been bettered than on the original Broadway cast album, crisply reissued here on the Decca Broadway label. Anthony Newley and his pert leading lady, underrated British performer Anna Quayle, perform the score with flash and verve. The entire score is fantastic though the penultimate number "Someone Nice Like You" must count as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written for the musical stage.
Anna Quayle is a marvellous performer, sadly only really remembered for her role as the Baroness in the movie of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (a role that is great but does not represent all she was capable of), and Anthony Newley, who also headed the London company to perhaps ever greater acclaim, is in his element.
A top cast album.
Great musical with great classic songs.......2003-07-13
NOT ALONE ANYMORE.......2002-10-03
YOU CAN ALMOST SEE THAT VERY EXPESSIVE FACE OF HIS, IT WA SA SHAME HIS PERFORMANCE WAS NOT CAPTURED ON FILM, STILL EVEN WITH OUT SEEING HIM. THE BLENDING OF SONG AND STORY ARE TIME LESS, THAT IT COULD BE ON BROADWAY TODAY WITHOUT BEING DATED.
THE STORY OF LITTLE CHAP AND EVIE , COULD BE ANY ONE OF US GOING THROUGH LIFE'S UP AND DOWNS.
Anthony Newley's Finest Hours!.......2002-09-25
Anthony Newley died in April 1999 after losing his battle with cancer. The battle of fame he never lost and left behind a wonderful collection of musicals, songs, tv and cabaret performances that we can love again and again. But the finest of all of Newley's output was this musical. Co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley made the role of Littlechap totally his own. Not even Sammy Davis Jnr, Joel Gray or Tony Tanner in the film version could match that unique quality of style and originality that Newley exudes in this fantastic tour de force role.
For fans of musicals unfamiliar with Newley's work, you will not be sorry when you buy this CD. For Newley fans - why haven't you already bought your copy!!
Enjoy, one and all, Anthony Newley at his very best.

Sacred marks John McDermott's first recording with the Irish Tenors since rejoining fellow original member Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright (who actually replaced McDermott in 2000). The Irish Tenors live up to their reputation as "gifted interpreters" with this collection, covering a wide range of spiritual material. Sacred was produced by the Irish Tenors' long-time musical director, Arnie Roth, who has also worked with Charlotte Church, Diana Ross, and Art Garfunkel. The album was produced in Prague at the Rudlofinum and ICN Studios.

Beyond words ..........2007-03-22
If you are open to the idea that music can be a vehicle for a moment of sublime and sacred ecstacy, that may help convey what I find difficult to put into words.
While I live continuously and constantly in Our Father's presence, a music album such as this can certainly heighten the moment with Him.

Glorious Encounter!.......2006-04-07
The standout songs are "The More I Seek You" (which we sing), "Running" and "My Romance". The only drawback to this CD is the beginning. On the CD it starts with the song "Glorious" and it seems like you come in on the worship time in the middle and so it takes longer than Overtaken to get into.
The answer to this mystery is on the DVD where their is another song first which is so powerful and begins the worship time with an incredible anointing. The other amazing part of the DVD is the spontaneous song "Every Nation." On the CD it cuts off at about 5 minutes, but the DVD shows this incredible spontaneous worship time in its entirety as it goes on for over 15 minutes! This is truly the most powerful part of this project. Watch the DVD first and then you'll enjoy the CD even more!
The most amazing series of worship songs I have ever heard........2006-02-20

Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15
Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.
Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.
Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.
However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.

is a musical rarity that shouldn't be missed. These basses have a gripping effect, with a timbre resembling that of an organ's pedal tones. These basses can sing the low A below the bass range. They are, simply, extraordinarily powerful voices. Savor the unearthly sound of them. Who knows - you might just get to like Russian polyphonic liturgical chant, as well.
