Amazon.com essential recording
Fifteen years after its initial release, Philip Glass's score to Godfrey Reggio's film Koyaanisqatsi is still as timeless as it was meant to be. Glass's epic score, virtually the only sound in this non-narrative movie, accompanied an exhilarating, wordless meditation of images ranging from expansive, slow-motion landscapes to whirling-dervish city scenes shot using time-lapse techniques. Glass's music was a perfect match. The opening chant is still unlike anything Glass has composed, a Tibetan monk operatic growl that set up the foreboding sense of loss the film engenders. Most of the score, however, casts Glass's minimalist themes in orchestral expanses. Bass strings troll the bottom while flutes draw circles in the air. On "The Grid," manic keyboards drive into the night, pounding out the cyclical refrains that are a Glass trademark. When Koyaanisqatsi came out, it seemed opulent with its orchestral forces, but always at the center were the keyboards, reeds, and voice that are Glass's characteristic sound. Koyaanisqatsi means "life out of balance," but Glass's remarkably austere score remains perfectly poised. This newly re-recorded edition adds nearly 30 minutes to the previous CD release with two previously unissued tracks and extended versions of "The Grid" and "Prophecies," the two signpost works of the film. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:
Point Clarification -- This is Process Music.......2006-12-11
People who complain about repetitiveness are completely missing the point of Glass's music and genre. Several contemporary composers, including Glass, have experimented with Process Music. Process Music moves away from traditionally harmonic driven material to (as you've probably guessed) a focus on the process. Often composers of this style of music begin with an ostinato pattern(for non-music people), which is a short and repeated phrase, which over time, he will begin to subtly shift and transform. Trance music seems to have some orgins from this field of musical experimentation. This will probably seem jarring to those whose only exposure to music has been limited to Western style harmony driven pieces. However, if you can let go of the immediate desire to hear something, "new" and "immediate" there are many rich layers to be discovered through process music, and it is fascinating to hear where and how far the composers can transform that beginning ostanato phrase.
The real treat for process music, is that, in my opinion, its slowing down of the usual harmonic processes and changes allow listeners who haven't studied music for years to see how composers from earlier years make the leaps from the opening material and musical themes, to the variations on them that occur mid-piece.
He could have given everyone what they were expecting to hear, some nice little John-Williams-like soundtrack, which would have completely undermined the experimental point of the whole movie. This is a brilliant soundtrack covering interesting ideas in musical experimentation and definition. Please give this soundtrack a shot with understanding of what it is meant to be, and stop trying to impose normal western conceits of "what music should be."

It does has its ups and downs.......2006-01-10
Koyaanisqatsi/Organic: The saxophone solo sounds more haunting in the original, but the atmosphere in the re-recording sounds more correct for the silent desert.
Cloudscapes: In the original, the trumpets have more power. In the re-recording, the low brass have more advantage.
Resource: The new version is immensely frail compared to the original. The organ doesn't sound that creepy, and the energy of the last three minutes is feeble.
Vessels: The choir for this re-recorded segment sounds more angelic and eerie. The second half of both versions sound the same.
Pruit Igoe: The original has the advantage. It has a stronger performance and fuller emotion.
The Grid: Both are hits and misses. For the old, the choir has more vigor, and the synchronization is clearer. The loud bass is what annoys me. For the new, the choir is sometimes overpowered by the orchestral ensemble. The entire sequence does not have the same power as the old. Crisper sound, though.
Prophecies: The original edition is definitely superior to the new edition. The organ solo is more distinctive and the male voices are superb.
So all in all, I'll just stick with the DVD soundtrack and keep the CD re-recording just in case the TV breaks down or something.

A little too slick and a little too much Galway.......2004-01-16
Based on the reviews I read about this album, I had high expectations. I am sorry to say that the album leaves me a little cold. The performances are superb, but unspontaneous. Another difficulty is with the orchestrations. In most cases on this album I think the flute just doesn't work. A case in point is Lover's Waltz, which is near perfect in the original Ungar/Mason version. Galway's flute just doesn't exude the same warmth. Another disappointment is Heart of the Heartland, which could have been an interesting conversation between Galway's flute and Ostroushko's mandolin. Instead we get another showcase for Galway with Ostroushko relegated to backup musician--what a shame! The only track I think that works well on this album is The West Texas Waltz, where we get a taste of how a really collaborative album might have sounded. I guess this album makes good easy listening, but it is certainly not the engaging album I would have expected of these folks.
After a year or two of owning this album, I have to say that the performances are even more stale that when I first reviewed it. I wish they'd let me take a star back.
Good for folks who like "easy listening". I like musicians who aren't afraid to challenge each other and themselves. This album had that potential, but falls flat.........
Very Compelling Classy Classical Appalachian.......2003-02-08
Is it the music or the musicians?.......2002-12-07
A National Treasure.......2002-10-20
The instrumentation, as you might expect, is the main feature of the CD. Flute, fiddle, piano, mandolin, guitar. But at what seems to be exactly the right time, Molly Mason and Ruth Ungar (Jay's daughter) voices sing out in harmony. And there is a deep understanding of the music here too, and therefore, much beauty in the sound. The rendering of "Pretty Saro" could stand alone as a classic, but when you hear it in order and against the background meticulously prepared by these musicians, it has a presence that is truly haunting.
I think anyone with a taste for the roots of American folk music will enjoy this CD. It has deepened my appreciation of the folk music of America and even the rural environment where I live in America. The art and craft are impeccable. "A Song of Home" is from beginning to end, thoroughly enjoyable, much to think about, a heritage to keep.

Lovely, if largely unknown, works.......2007-07-20
Wonderful Introduction to Vaughan Williams' Chamber Music.......2005-08-01
As an homage to Renaissance English works for consorts of viols, this Phantasie never reaches self-consciously for archaic gestures. Its fairly short movements instead opt for alternating dreamy and dance-like moods, with just a bit of counterpoint thrown in occasionally. The extra viola affords a chance for richer textures and nice contrasts: just listen to the evocative opening measures, in which a plaintive solo viola is answered by ethereal sustained chords from the other players. Absolutely captivating.
The First Quartet, written about the same time, has a similar style but longer and more formally worked-out movements. So VW can approach more ardent romanticism in the slow movement -- there's time to build to a real climax or two. The Second Quartet, from the early 1940s, is more astringent and dramatic, probably reflecting the anxieties of the war years.
This is a terrific recording technically as well. It manages to achieve intimacy without the sense of microphones having been shoved in the performers' faces (or fingerboards). Vibrant, rich sounds. If you enjoyed this, try the EMI reissue of another Vaughan Williams work, "An Oxford Elegy," which offers a similar combination of controlled but deeply felt emotion within an English pastoral "landscape" (here imagined, there invoked more directly).

Double Reed showcase--Strauss, Mozart, Weber.......2006-03-20
The two Mozart concertos here both receive fine interpretations by the Philadelphia Orchestra with Eugene Ormandy conducting his principal musicians, oboist John deLancie and Bernard Garfield. If the orchestra at times sounds a bit heavy, and the tempi a touch slow--because we are now accustomed to hearing these pieces by chamber orchestras and period instruments ensembles--this will be made up for by the exuberant and precise execution of one of the best orchestra-conductor relationships ever. deLancie, carrying the torch from his predecessor Marcel Tabuteau, proves that he was certainly one of the leaders in a generation of great oboists which include John Mack, Ray Still, Harold Gomberg. deLancie's phrasing is beautiful, his sound warm, and gives an all-around artful performance, especially in the delightful closing rondo movement. Garfield also shines in Mozart, with a beautiful rich bassoon tone that is always singing, both in the low and high registers of his instrument. Garfield and the Philadelphia Orchestra also do a wonderful job with Weber's Hugarian Rondo. Garfiled gives great character to some of the variations, always with great technique. It is hard to say enough praises about these two stellar soloists caught in classic recordings from the early 1960s.
But there is more... The author of the liner notes writes that Strauss' concerto is a "liquid, constantly developing essay into the very nature of the oboe itself, as well as the orchestra which surrounded it... they play 'into' one another, the oboe dovetailing here and there into the orchestral texture, which itself emerges and submerges according to the musical demands of the journey. It is as if throughout all of his previous orchestral writing... Strauss had been preparing to write this work, polishing his knowledge of and challenging each instrument to its maximum capacity." I don't think there is a better description of this piece, and that is exactly the way the performers do it. Neil Black hands over a spectacular version of this devilishly difficult Strauss Oboe Concerto backed by the English Chamber Orchestra and Daniel Barenboim. Black's playing is so smooth and beautiful that you will not notice the taxing long phrasing and awkward breathing patterns required of the oboist. Barenboim is no doubt intimately familiar with Strauss' large orchestra and operatic works from his conducting career, and he leads one of the world's finest chamber orchestras in an intimate and colorful orchestra accompaniment. With Barenboim's genius baton, the orchestra interacts intimately with the soloist the way Strauss intended, and the recording balance is perfect. In my opinion, the over all soloist-orchestral execution in this recording of the Strauss Concerto is only matched by Ray Still's recording, whose recording on Virgin is also available at a great price.
While I know that there are other great recordings of these pieces (I am a double reed player) this album is really a special treat--so much great double reed playing on one CD! With 74 minutes of music at $6.98, this CD is also a tough deal to beat. It should definitely be in your collection.
LEGENDARY PERFORMANCES.......2002-07-09
Decent but disappointing.......2001-08-17
Neil Black's recording of the Strauss Concerto is better, but has some obvious problems. His tempo and phrasing seem agitated at times, and he seems unsure in the high range and difficult passages. However, this is probably the most difficult piece in the oboe repetoire, and Black pulls together a decent performance. If you want to hear how this piece was meant to sound, I recommend the Alex Klein recording with CSO. The Bassoon pieces are both well done by Garfield. Overall decent, but disappointing. There are much better recordings out there, especially for the Mozart oboe concerto. Nonetheless, I have yet to find a fully satisfying recording of the Mozart. Two stars for de Lancie's performance and three for the rest.

The Ultimate Fusion Album.......2003-10-14
"Nothing Personal" is worth only buying the album. Colaiuta and Garfield are aliens and their virtuosity is breathtaking.
On "Document", the four members do not forget to play with passion and feeling. This is not a chops feast for the sake of it. They all displays a huge deal of musicality and taste.
Neil Stubenhaus is the best and most tasteful bass player in the world. Period. (OK I admit I am a HUGE fan of ALL his recordings). He's the ultimate groove master and he swings like crazy. Colaiuta is just weird, wild, amazing... he's Vinnie. One of his most impressive recording from a technical point of view. Mike Landau shines throughout and David Garfield proves that he's one of the best guy who ever sat behind a keyboards. He's a beautifully melodic and emotional player.
The music on this album is a mix of pure fusion and more R&B influenced tune. The strength of "Document" lies in the fact that you do not have to be a musician to enjoy it (I am not and could not play an instrument to save my life :-). Thanks to the musician's huge experience in various styles (they played with people like George Benson, Barbra Streisand, Sting, Michael Bolton, Cher, Larry Carlton, Frank Sinatra, Seal, James Taylor amongst many others), they managed to make the music accessible to "average listeners".
"Document" is, in my opinion, the ultimate fusion album.

Hail To the Thief!.......2005-08-06
Most labels when they combine different recordings together usually list the recording date and who conducted the band at that time. Altissimo! has not graduated to that level of professionalism in their products yet. Hence we just get The US Marine Band, not when it was recorded and who might be directing it!
Fortunately, the quality of the Marine Band is so good that it does not matter what Altissimo! does in putting together a CD. That said, the music provides an interesting chronology of ceremonial music played at the White House over the years. The linear notes are an improvment over the past, when little or nothing was provided. All and all, not bad from what we have come to expect from Altissimo!
Hail to the Chief.......2005-02-02
The program in Hail to the Chief is a tribute to our presidents. It is a varied program that shows the depth of the music played by one of America's oldest, established in 1798, and finest musical organizations, the United States Marine Band. This CD contains twenty-one marches and other classical numbers from Sousa to Strauss to Tchaikovsky. Some of the music in the CD is rare and for this reason alone of interest to music history buffs. One of these selections is a recording of the "Star-Spangled Banner" using the earliest published arrangement (1814) of the anthem. Another is the "Solemn March" played at Lincoln's funeral. Also included a rarely recorded Sousa piece, "Easter Monday on the White House Lawn." There is also an historic 1906 recording of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag."
The recording also contains excerpts from speeches made by five of our presidents four of which were from inaugural addresses. The program notes explain the musical selections and how each was of interest to the various presidents.
The only negative, and it is not with the CD itself, is that the program notes do not include recording dates, where recorded and who the conductor of the band was. I highly recommend this CD to all interested in the America's patriotic music as well as the serious collector of military music and those interested in the musical roots of our country.

Hail to the Chief.......2005-01-11
I was initially puzzled by the selections but as I began to listen and read the short narrative that is offered I started to realize I was being taken on a very different trip through American history. Consequently, the impact of the program had a totally unexpected and fascinating effect.
I was not just mesmerized by the sounds I heard, the arrangements which were presented or the memorable utterances of some of our Chief Executives. I was completely entranced by the realization that these men and others who had held the office of President of the United States, had listened and reacted to the same music the CD offers. It gave me an insight into their humanity that text books cannot provide.
As an example, I hadn't known the original sheet music for the "Star Spangled Banner" was arranged differently from the way we listen to it today --- who know how many Americans heard it played that way?
I had never actually thought about the fact that Washington might have actually heard "Hail Columbia" played, just as I was hearing it.
I was a bit startled that Chester Arthur commanded Sousa to compose what became the "Presidential Polonaise" and tried to imagine how much pressure he, (Sousa), must have felt in doing the President's bidding. (By the way, after listening to that unquestionably superb composition of the "March King", I must admit despite its delightful sound, I'm very pleased that we no longer use that as the official march of the President and we have returned to "Hail to the Chief".)
I vividly recall watching the casket of President Kennedy being carried over the steps of the Capitol and listening to "The Navy Hymn" and the music recaptured that moment as if it was yesterday.
It wasn't solely the music I savored but it was also the historical images they engendered. Indeed, music affects all "ages"!
The CD is a professional product that will hopefully be enjoyed by thousands for many years to come.

Captivating Wind Concertos by Haydn & Others?.......2003-02-19
However, here we have two works for winds surely Haydn's, a magnificent trumpet work and the Sinfonia Concertante.
The trumpet work by Johnson is superb, with its elegance and lyricism, elegantly nuanced by his fine phrasing.
The Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, bassoon, violin, cello and orchestra is an excellent statement of interplay between soloists and orchestra. It is lilty, passionate and stately, even at times sounding like kicked up chamber music. The string soloists are excellent, and de Lancie and Garfield shine on the double reeds.
While the Oboe Concerto is unknown as to real composer, long attributed to Hadyn. Pierlot shines here in this spirited solo effort well accompanied by the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra.
What can one say about Rampal's playing, but it is the tops of flutists. Here in Hofmann's composition, he shines with graceful power and energy.
Superb performers of excellent concerto composition. Magnificent value!
