Outstanding new band and music!.......2007-04-19
The record company who produced this band is SMART! I heard the song "Bob and Bonnie" on a demo CD that was included in some magazine I bought, and liked that song so much I bought the CD. I have found EVEN MORE incredible songs on the whole CD. I like every song...a lot! I ripped all the songs to my PC and listen while working in my home office. Then, when I go out, I have the CD in the car and jam while going down the road. There are no favorites...they're all awesome! I will say that "A Pen and a Piece of Mind" is a real standout, however. I love the synth work toward the song's end. I can't wait for them to put out another CD. I have high hopes that they can keep up the great story-telling and pop-rock sound. It really is one of the best CDs I've heard in a VERY LONG time. I was in high school in the 80's, so I'm a "pop-rock-music expert", and these guys truly rock. The songs, instrumentally, are complex, and the lyrics are intelligent and express things we can all relate to. All in all, an absolutely fantastic, fun, upbeat album that will have you movin' and grovin' throughout whatever it is you have to do that day. They remind me of Third Eye Blind without the edgy moodiness. As sung in the first song on the disc "Sunrise Goodbyes"...the music moves you like good poetry! Don't miss this CD...it will boost your mood and have you enjoying the pure gift of music again!
AWESOME!!!.......2006-03-03
randomly decided to check out what rating this awesome band got, and only a 4?? theyre definitely a 5!
their sound is really unique, and their songs are really good. exit, emergency is my favorite song on the entire album, sunrise goodbyes is really really good, bob and bonnie is such a sweet song and one of my favs also, one more won't hurt is definitely one of my favorites, basically all the songs are all really unique and sOOO good. houston calls has been one of my favorite bands ever since they came out
If u like fast rock, GET THIS!.......2006-02-04
This is THE BEST CD i have gotten so far, my favorite songs are Exit Emergency and Elephant and Castle. They have awsome riffs, and a great voice. I think what really puts it all together is the Piano, because no matter how hard the guitar is you can hear the piano/keyboard. I'm not an audiophile, nor a major critic, but if u like bands that play fast rock, thats not too hard, this is your match. AND To all the parents out there wondering if this CD is appropriate for their kid even if its not explicit, IT IS! There is no horrid lyrics AT ALL! the only mild language u hear once or twice is h**l or D**n [...]
Good, but lacking something.......2006-01-24
Houston calls is a pretty good band, and this cd is pretty alright too, but it isn't worth more than 3 stars. Alot of the songs tend to sound the same, and the lead singer has kind of an annoying voice. "exit emergency" and "Bob and Bonnie" are the standouts here. If they'd take a few more chances and mix it up a little bit, houston calls would be one of the best bands out there. they have the potential, they just need to take some more chances. This one's only for avid DTR fans.
Breath of fresh air.......2006-01-16
Let me start off by saying I'm a huge Drive-Thru fan. Years ago I got hooked on the label because of acts such as New Found Glory, The Starting Line and Something Corporate... I eagerly anticipated each acts new releases and was hardly ever disappointed. Well that was years ago and unfortunately the label has digressed in recent memory. While releases such as "Life in Dreaming" by Hidden in Plain View and "Based on a True Story" by The Starting Line were good albums, neither lacked the lasting affects of previous Drive-Thru recordings. Combine that with Something Corporate frontman Andrew McMahon being diagnosed with luekemia, it grave a dim outlook for the future of Drive-Thru with no top acts ready to lead the label.
One day I checked out the web site and saw the advertisement for Houston Calls debut CD and immediatly thought of Starting Lines "Say It Like You Mean It" (to me one of the best pop-punk/emo recordings in the last decade). When I picked up the CD and began listening to it, I was thrilled to have a new drive thru CD that sounded like their classic releases, but at the same time disappointed there wasn't more to the CD.
I have to agree with most other reviews of this that a lot of the songs sound alike. Tracks (1,2,6,8,and 10) all have a similar arrangement that disappointed me in the beginning. The only reason I kept listening to the CD are because the other tracks stood out as excellent songs in my mind. Track 3 "Bob and Bonnie" is a new twist of writing a love song, telling a story of two unknown strangers falling for each other. While a ballad by lyrical content, the sound is much more fast paced that keeps you enjoying the message. Track 4 "Elephant and Castle" has an excellent guitar setting to the song and takes you through the story of a girl moving on from her hometown to chase a dream (this is one of those rare CDs where the title of the album defines what its about... all the tracks are their own story as one can clearly see). Just a great rock song. Track 5 "Amtrek Is For Lovers" is one of my favorite songs in recent memory. A true ballad, the chorus of "No joke... she say's I'll leave you. I never meant to treat you like this, I can't believe it. I'll give you three more chances then I'm gone for good. He swears... he's really worth it. Can't have time to show it, this routine is over as he says to her, it hits her like a ton of bricks." will have you rewinding the track over and over. The drum beat and guitar rhythms to go along this song are perfect, truly a special recording. Track 9 "A Line In The Sand" is a fast paced song of moving on. Definatly a rock song... the lyrics are repeated through most of the song, which is disappointing to someone like me who loves a good lyric more then anything else, but the chorus is excellent and the instruments carry this edgy anthem of lost love and anger. The CD concludes with track 11 "The Better Part of Valor" (seriously, what a great title for a track!). Took awhile for me to like this track for some reason, but now its one of my favorite. Lyrics are excellent "... if you still have a heart to steal then I'll steal it from you." and the drum beat is superbe. Although this track will sound alot like other bands (reminds me of Anberlin's "Paperthin Hymn" which is an awesome song and even better band), it differs from what the rest of "Short Stories" sounds like.
Yes a good amount of the tracks sound alike, but please don't think they are by any means bad tracks. They are poppy and upbeat, just repititious. I wanted to give this album 5 starts because the standout songs are so excellent in my opinion, but I simply can't because of the repitition. For the Drive Thru label though, this CD gives hope to their die hard fans that the label is returning to push out CDs that made them an icon before.

Superb.......2006-11-14
Carlos Salzedo's music is difficult, no VERY difficult (and I'm a harpist, so I know these things!) and the Salzedo Harp Duo play them as effortlessly as water falling off a leaf. Inspired musicality and daredevil tempos make this a "must have" and even if you're not a harpist, it's absolutely lovely music. And "Rhumba" will have you dancing!
Delightful music for harp duo..........2005-03-08
This is an irresistible collection of beautiful melodies arranged (or composed) for harp duo. Nancy Lendrum & Jody Guinn are masters of their instruments, and lend an energy and flourish to this delightful assortment of music by Carlos Salzedo and other assorted classical composers. The arrangements are crisp and the playing is brilliant! There isn't a dull moment or 'lackluster' piece on this cd. This music would be ideal accompaniment to any activity from a "dinner party for 8" to a Sunday afternoon relaxing with a good book...highly recommended!!

Greatest Album Ever Made........2005-05-18
I've been listening to music steadily since, oh, about 1972 or so. While Joy Division will forever remain my Greatest Band To Ever Walk The Face Of The Earth, and "Unknown Pleasures" will probably always battle it out for my Greatest Album Ever Made, this Reload album is probably it.
There are certain times in one's life when one simply has to sit back staggered in stupified amazement at the power of the creativity of the human mind - and this album has me doing just that. I wouldn't change a single note of it. Produced in 1993 during what was probably the most fertile period for Electronic Music ever, this release more than any blew open the barriers of what could be considered "Techno" music - as if something this stylistically varied could ever be constrained by such a term! - just an unbelievably meticulously crafted soundscape (remember when "album" meant a flowing contiguous sequence of tracks? This practically defines the term) from the God-like Mark Pritchard (with some help from Tom Middleton, of course). It's the soundtrack to the SciFi movie that was never made, the sonic equivalent to "Blade Runner" (all those well-selected samples!). From the languid Sunny Ibiza-friendly traipse that is "La Soleil Et La Mer" to the brutal sonic attack of "Event Horizon" and everywhere in between, this album covers a vast sonic landscape without ever losing focus. Utter genius.
Techno has produced its share of 5-star albums over the years - but this one tops them all. 5 stars almost seems silly to rate this as - there's got to be a rating system for something that towers over everything else. As Spinal Tap once said - "This one goes to 11!"
Dark Underground Dance Dust Sparkles Imagination.......2003-07-30
A Collection of Short Stories has been my all time favourite album since it first drifted, twisted and turned its way down my ear canal to stimulate the particles in my brain. This album dosn't have a catagory, this album is unique, brave and does not fit in anywhere other than inside your own head. I have never had my emotions manipulated in such a way, I am a dancer too and anyone who dances from the heart will know what this did to them. You'll find after you've owned it for a few years you'll keep going back to it again and again. The trouble with that though is you will feel a sense of sadness of what once was, and nothing has come close since, nothing a big sound system dosn't cure though! What absolutely blew me away by this music and still does today, is what equipment on earth did they use to make it?
Other music I listened to since Reload waltzed into my life: Autechre, Aphex Twin, Future Sound of London, Biosphere, Leftfield, another one that came out before most of the world was ready for it was Speedy J with Public Energy no.1, The Sabres of Paradise, Jam & Spoon and Luke Slater, later moving on to DJ Shadow, Massive Attack, Portishead, Chemical Brothers, Finley Quay and then Zero 7.
You need A Collection of Short Stories like we all need food.

I remember ben and myself starting out in our record distribution days, it was july/august 92 if i recollect when we drove up to somerset that day to meet mark and tom we sat in the studio most of the day and just watched them lay down what became known as mosh track 8 of this cd. Later ben and myself would spin this particular track at our club nights and look at each other with a satisfied grin as peoples heads exploded, as that gurgling subterranean bassline dropped in. At that time we were "Pulse", tom(2nd half of reload) and another weird guy by the name of richard were "fizzbomb" two rivalling club nights being held in nearby towns in cornwall, tom and richard did'nt last too long, richard moved on and became the aphex twin without the twin...tom hooked up with mark and became reload (amongst other names, global communication, jedi knights etc...)ben and I migrated west and settled in california, what moved me to write a review about this after such a deep close interest and after so long for me, is the fact that even to date it still stirs emotion enough for people to write five star reviews. This was truly a point where things really took off but never went anywhere, just sort of floated around the room, if it wasnt for marks shyness and toms pretentious attitude the unreleased DAT of stuff i am looking at right now would be out for people to enjoy, and if we could have seen past our growing pains and our fronts we could have really carried things a lot further, as it is this release is timeless and borders on genius, its not techno, techno is a word juan atkins came up with without realizing the impact it would make....this is technology music, electronic musical soundscapes painted with emotion. i think that might work better is that ok derrick?

And the tide rolled back..........2000-05-08
In Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's epic _Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas_, he writes about the spirit of the 1960s as being like riding the crest of a wave. And, as he notes from his Vegas hotel room in the dark days of Nixon, he says you can almost look out there toward the hills near Vegas and see where the wave broke and rolled away, never to be seen again. Well, that reminds me a lot of "A Collection of Short Stories". I look at this release as being a similar point in techno, rave, and ambient techno music where that wave crested and then rolled back into the depths again, never again to reach such a height. This beautiful release is perhaps the pinnacle of all of that. Curiously little-known outside of the underground, this shows mid-90s electronic music attempting to reach farther than it had as just background music for a wild night out. Yes, there are beats, and yes, there are trippy ambiences here...but the sequencing and overall composition goes so far beyond niteclub and rave fare, almost seeming like some vast epic soundtrack for some film that doesn't exist. And, in fact, it is...as the booklet included contains a series of short stories that're cued to go with the tracks on this work. Definitely in the vein of The Orb, or the KLF's "Chill Out", this album takes their ideas and runs so much farther afield with them that it's almost achingly-sad to listen to it today, contemplating where this music might've gone had the audience been somewhat more sympathetic to such delicious complexity. I will say, though, that if you say you 'know' techno, ambient, rave, etc and you don't know this release, then you just simply don't know, period. Get it, listen, read along, and then shed a tear for where the scene _might have_ gone if it had had the wherewithall to fully embrace something this challenging. A critical, important, vital release.

GLAD I DIDN'T SLEEP ON THIS ONE...........2004-11-24
This is one hell of a hip hop album. Fred Ones is an amazing producer, his beats are a little hard for me to discribe, but I can't imagine any heads into hip hop at all not feeling them. Amazon failed to list the numerous guest appearances on this CD so I'll go ahead and do it.
1. Akbar - Phobia Intro
2. Sinnagi - Rush Coyboy
3. M Sayyid & Creature - The Same Still
4. Breez Evahflowin - Test
5. Life L.O.N.G. - The Puppet MC

12. Abyss - Viruses
13. Rob Sonic - Last Stab
14. Vastaire - Some Seeds
15. Slug - Sex & More
16. Outro
It's funny but I pretty much bought this because it had Rob Sonic, Hangar 18, and Vast on it, and those 3 songs turned out to be my least favorite joints on this release. My favorite tracks are from the lesser known MC's (lesser known to me anyway) like Blowout, Abyss and Sinnagi. Other tracks worth a mention are from the cats from Stronghold, Life L.O.N.G., and Breez Evahflowin, M Sayyid (A.P.C.) and Creature's appearance was worth noting, and even though I'm not an Atmosphere fan I did like Slugs joint as well. If you dig innovative hip hop production Fred Ones Phobia of Doors is worth peepin out.
