The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars Great To See The Wilburys Back In Print.......2007-07-19

It's great to see both albums by the Traveling Wilburys back in print, and even though Roy Orbison and George Harrison didn't live to enjoy it, the other three, thankfully, are still alive and still working musically. The best songs overall are "Handle With Care", which George Harrison originally intended as a B-side for a solo single, and "End Of The Line", which says that if you take pleasure in life's simple joys, you'll be a happier person than if you try to indulge in every pleasure around. This set, which also includes a DVD, is essential for fans of both roots-rock AND pure pop.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Wilbury fans!.......2007-07-19

The combined talents of Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, all superstars in there own right, overflow in this superb collection. Even a not so big Dylan fan like me loved the way these superbly talented musicians, blended and complimented each other to create some wonderful music for every fan to enjoy.
It keeps alive the memory of the immense talent of Orbison and Harrison and is a must for the CD collection

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have Addition.................2007-07-18

Unavailable for some time, the Travelling Wilburys in a must have addition to ones CD collection of essential music. The initial offering (CD # 1)is head and shoulders taller then the later issued CD # 2, which is absent the magic of its predecessor. The loss of Roy Orbison was perhaps a factor. The DVD is good, particularly showing the creative process that went into creating the initial offering. It is disappointing in that it only shows 2 live performances from the initial offering. However, worth the price

5 out of 5 stars Travelling Wilbury's Review.......2007-07-17

CD of excellent quality -- additional tracks are a real value add. The DVD is very well done. It gives an excellent history of the Travelling Wilbury's and included a nice tribute to Roy Orbison

At the time of its release, internet rumor had it that Collaborations was a "taster" project--that is, a sampler to whet listeners' appetites for Scott's long-awaited third solo album, due in summer of 2007. But Collaborations doesn't play like something you'd listen to once before throwing your napkin (or, more accurately, your earbuds) down. Not only does it genre-jump with the kind of precision you don't normally find in an artist pinned to a certain musical movement (in Scott's case, neo-soul), it throws the weight of its bold names around without straining or slacking under the pressure. The hit here is "Daydreamin'," a fuzz-encrusted slice of alternative hip-hop off Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor, but there's so many other full-bodied contenders for mass adoration it could easily be eclipsed as the favorite. They include the soul-soaked "Said Enough," with the unmistakable Isley Brothers; the noirish thumper "8 Minutes to Sunrise," with Common (who also gets "Funky for You" together with Bilal); and "Slide," maybe the sexiest jazz-and-R&B hybrid ever to heat up a mainstream diva's disc. On that track, credit goes to Jeff Bradshaw for brilliance with his brass. But consider it: how many other singers could pull off sultriness alongside a trombone? Scott is a shape-shifting vocal wonder; Collaborations is the latest evidence. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Awesome creative project.......2007-07-17

What can I say, she is such an incredible artist. Just when you think you've heard everything she's capable of Jill Scott emerges with more variety and new sounds. Every selection is like a unique work of art. Jill shows that she can lead or be the accompaniment and is comfortable doing hip-hop, jazz, and R&B. I love this woman!!

5 out of 5 stars On Point Always.......2007-07-13

I have one word to describe this CD: Excellent. As always Jill delivered & did not disappoint me.

5 out of 5 stars Love this Lady.......2007-07-05

I have a few of these songs on other albums already but love the production design of this double disc. The bonus tracks are super keen too, and Jill Scott's voice is like buttery, syrupy pancakes on a Sunday morning. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars another GREAT Jill Scott offering.......2007-07-05

As a fan of Jill's, I have been waiting so patiently since the release of her last album Beautifully Human in 2004.

This music is fantastic! Disc one is very strong with great collaborations. Especially like: "good morning heartache", "let me", "eight minutes to sunrise" and "the rain feat Will Smith" - oh and "daydreamin" - too hard to choose! Disc two has samples of other artists, so I enjoyed listening to snippets of their styles as well.

Keep it going, Jill! You are a voice for these times! Do you forsee a tour on the West Coast? you have alot of fans here!!!

5 out of 5 stars Jill Scott is a Winner, Wonderful Voice.......2007-06-25

Jill is sounding great, love her Philly sounding voice. Enjoyed the colloraborations with other singers.
Thanks for the bonus CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-04-20

I was a little nervous buying this CD because I wasn't sure I'd like it (I've never bought a Sinead O'Connor CD before). But this is a terrific collection of interesting songs, good lyrics, and beautiful vocals. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific collection of good songs , great vocalist.......2006-02-09

This turned out to be a very good purchase indeed. I just listened for the first time to my copy of this 17-track CD that features the vocal talents of Ireland's Sinead O'Connor, and immediately liked the styles and the songs . Sinead is an excellent singer whose voice is highly expressive and emotive and can be loud or soft depending on the mood of the piece.

The magic tracks here for me are Guide Me God (with Ghostland) , Blood Of Eden (with Peter Gabriel)- her voice here is simply beautiful, Tears From The Moon (with Conjure One)- I also like this song a lot, Empire ( with techno act Bomb The Bass and wordsmith Benjamin Zephaniah)- this track is lyrically superb and rails against the injustices of the former British Empire , and Heroine ( with The Edge)- a song I have never heard until now but which was a very early collaboration dating from 1986 . I also liked It's All Good ( with Dublin folk singer Damien Dempsey) and Release ( with Afro Celt Sound System ) - in which some exotic sounds and instrumentation blend in well with a slow techno rhythm.

None of these songs was a really big radio hit, which makes it even more pleasurable to discover as it was all "new" stuff to me - each tune comes as a self-contained work and all have different production and span 17 years from 1986-2003.

I highly recommend this CD to those who enjoy the music of the great Sinead O'Connor ,and also to those who enjoy modern "worldbeat" collaborations

5 out of 5 stars awesome collaborations!.......2006-01-25

Sinead is a wonderful artist, and her work with the other artists in this eclectic collection does not disappoint. I have found this to be one of my new favorite CDs. Her passion is undeniable, and her messages come through loud and clear. Sometimes words are not necessary, but when she uses them they are clear and defined. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who is a fan of Sinead's work and/or strong-willed women.

5 out of 5 stars And on the 7th day..........2006-01-21

This can be short and oh so sweet - what an incredible compilation of some of the most beautiful, funkiest, and heartfelt songs I have ever heard. Wow, Bomb The Bass & Sinead doing Empire, Afro Celt Sound System, Jah Wobble and 'Visions Of You'. As other reviewers have stated, many of these groups I had yet to hear of, hold the obvious: Peter Gabriel & U2.
Few things are certain in life, but, if you even think you respect Sinead's talents and/or ideology, this will absolutely make your day!

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional CD!.......2005-11-23

I have not been a Sinead O'Connor fan until now. I have enjoyed some of her music in the past but for the most part have found her too dark and angry. In contrast Sinead shines wonderfully on this compilation of songs with some outstanding artists adding to the music. Yes, the Sinead you know is still here. The first songs on the CD are what you would expect. Dark, moody and a bit angry. Except she plays with some wonderful company that brings her music and lyrics new depth, and yes, warmth.

As I listen to each song I find my self smiling at how this is the best song on the CD only to find that the next is even better. By the time I get to "Wake up and Make Love to Me" the smile goes becomes a full face grin. Sinead goes from dark to sensual and makes this song truly sexy. Now, I ask you, when was the last time you thought of Sinead and sexy in the same thought?

The whole CD progesses in this fashion and the stunning array of artists is truly special. By the final song "All kinds of everything" you will have a totally different understanding of Sinead, her music and her sense of humor.

Now for the best part. If you are in to hi fi this CD is very well produced and engineered. This is worthy of your high end systems capabilities.

Truly enjoyable!!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow, amazing.......2006-06-07

I can almost never give out 5 stars to CD's. I think I gave one to Atmosphere's new drop. All I know is I never heard of him, or any Canadian rapper. I downloaded the CD, and within a week bought 2 CD's from this guy. Some of the best, most origional rapping I have heard. Great production. Classified has amazing rhymes, delivery, and production, it makes an amazing CD. One of very few I highly recommend. You will not go wrong with this Can-uck. I have only listened to Trial and Error and Boy-Cott, but I would say buy Boy-cott and see what's up.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy.......2005-09-16

this cd is almost a classic. great cd. everyone that loves hip hop should pick it up. I heard from people it was good but I never expected it to be this good. Classified is the sh*t

5 out of 5 stars wicked.......2005-09-07

In my opinion, one of the best cds of the year. buy this album!!
u won't regret it
his beats remind me of kanye's style definte buy

5 out of 5 stars Classified Keeps Getting Better.......2005-08-27

This is by far my favorite Classified Cd, and I thought nothing could have beaten 'trial & error' but this CD did. Almost all the tracks were solid '10's. 5th element and both versions of Unexplainable Hunger were probably 11s. Class' producing skills are unmatched in Canada and this album gave his best production, with live guitars, fiddles, keyboards and bag pipes this CD as a very authentic sound. Many critics say that Classified is the voice of Canada's underground hip hop scene, and with his work here that title is very fitting.

Simply put this Cd is worth every dime you spend on it. It is too good to just copy from a friend or bootleg it in anyway. Classfied needs teh money and he deserves the money with his efforst on 'Boy-Cott-In The industry'

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational..........2005-08-10

When it comes down to it, Classified is just a blue collard worker who's been trying to make it big in the music business for over 10 years. He produces his own beats and is a good lyricist, you have to respect him for doing what he's done. His beats are catchy and he even admits that they sound commercial in one of the songs but they'll have your head bumping in a fresh way. He's not rapping about guns or money or ho's but he does rap about weed...lol. Seriously, this man has a lot of talent, just search for his official site on google and you can watch his videos of his singles. I hope that'll help you decide but if you're reading this and don't have this album, just buy it! You won't regret it, I've been listening to it for a week straight and when I listen to other music I keep coming back to it. It's just plain good hip hop. Peace...

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT***** Exactly what I was looking for!.......2007-06-02

This CD is OUTSTANDING! I got it today when I was looking for "soft, peaceful background music" to bring through my books. I put it on, and must have played it at least seven times - and I'm not even writing today!

This CD would be perfect for anyone who is getting a very relaxing massage, for people who meditate, or would just love peaceful music. I feel the energy of it and it is soooo pure!

Marina Raye uses the Native Flute, and the melodic sounds (NOT chants) are BLISSFULLY peaceful.

This is now my favorite peaceful, background music - I've listed to many before that were all wonderful. I just think this particular CD is extraordinary!

What a gift!!!

5 out of 5 stars Recommended by my therapist.......2007-05-01

This music was recommended by my therapist several years ago. In addition to having TypeA personality, I'm moderately ADHD. A skeptic, I was surprised that the first time I listened to the music in my therapist's office ... I fell asleep! Sitting up!

The first few months (year?) I tried to listen to theta music daily. Now I listen to it occasionally on the 2-3 days per week bus ride to campus (where I teach) -- and on cross-country airplane trips. (I take the red-eye, this helps me rest, even if I don't sleep.)

I don't pretend to understand how brainwave frequencies work or how this music activates them ... but I know from my firsthand experience that the theory is "as advertised" for my brain.

If your goal is to calm your brain or help find your center ... try this music! Be sure to listen with headphones.

5 out of 5 stars Truly touches the .......2005-04-19

I am an A+ personality who is now paying the price of all that tension in my body. I have been getting into Holistic approaches to reduce stress (such as yoga, transformational breathing, health and organic food, etc.) Meditation has always been tough for me--- I am either going at a speed of 100 mph or, when I relax (aka meditate) fall asleep. I went on vacation to Lake Tahoe recently to really unwind. I wanted a meditation CD and by chance found this one. I put it on (along with three others I also bought that did nothing for me) and actually had it just playing in the background while I did other things. I wanted to listen to the CDs to see which would be the best to listen to while I got in the hot tub out in the snow. Well, when this CD came on it could not remain "background" music. [...] The flutes were very hamonic and really captured me like nothing I had EVER heard before. The other 3 CDs I bought by other artists will collect dust as THIS IS THE CD. I will now get every CD she has done and hope they all have the same effect.

So many other "meditative" CDs almost seem "forced" relaxation (maybe just my inability to relax). Some have ranges that are not at all harmonic to me (too high pitch, awful talking, one even ended the CD with an Ad on "who was responsible for bringing me the music on the CD--not at all the way to end a meditation CD. Maybe I just have not made good choices.) This is not just music. It truly gets beyond your ears (at least mine) and down to the "inner" you. Before I knew it, I was relaxed (at least to a D+ personality) was aware of my "inner" self and became very introspective. The music REALLY HIT MY HEART.

I can't say enough. I truly like it (correct that to LOVE IT) and hope that anyone reading this review who decides to try Marina Raye out has the same experience as I did.

Thanks Marina for the wonderful music! A new fan!

5 out of 5 stars Collaborations - One Heart.......2005-04-18

Marina Raye's music offers us a piece of Heaven on earth. I never tire of listening to One Heart, or any of Marina Raye's CDs. I feel the immediate presence of the divine Mother whenever I listen to this blissful, beautiful, ethereal music which transports me to an everpresent divine place. Through her divine music, Marina gifts us the eternal Love we all seek. To listen to her music is to be embraced by the Divine, to feel our true home and Spirit, and experience profound peace. I meditate with this CD, and play it for friends and family during Reiki sessions, who are instantly transported to another place the moment they hear Marina's music. A true spiritual treat! Buy this CD and any other CDs from Marina Raye. You will feel calm and peaceful the moment her blissful notes reach your soul. Peace.

5 out of 5 stars slow down and smell the roses.......2004-03-29

Marina Raye's hauntingly beautiful breath sings into the barrel of her flute. She is playing the key of F#, which activates the heart chakra, and heals the earth. Along with Charles Cannon, originator of Synchronicity Foundation International, this CD is calibrated to the theta vibration for a state of deep brain relaxation and focused meditation. When listening to this, I feel my heart expand and open, my worries flutter away. I feel outside of time and place. I feel my divine center. If you don't own one of Marina Raye's CD's you should. Her work stands apart from all other meditation tapes. The peaceful repetition of quivering notes are like no other. There is a deeply passionate musicality in the gentle tones and you feel the notes grip every cell of your being. You become one with the sound.

5 out of 5 stars This cd is violin rockin!.......2005-12-15

These songs are well-tailored interpretations of singer-songwriters' original intentions. Will Taylor's arrangements are characteristic of his guest artists' personal styles. That is what makes the CD so entertaining to listen to, these arrangements are elaborative measures taken to already superb pieces. The result is a cross-genre awakening for anyone who thought they had heard every kind of music.

5 out of 5 stars Kick Tooshie CD of the Year!.......2005-10-20

This CD is the best album that I have heard in a LONG time. Most of the music that is out now is mainstream garbage and this album gives you originality and new sound. Every song is good and you would really regret not buying this album, seriously. This CD is one that you can kick back and relax to, the perfect chill album. Listening to this album makes me feel like I'm on vacation. Really, it's that good. This is not one of those albums that you buy and only like one song and makes you feel like you wasted money. EVERY song is amazing. The sound quality is superb. This is live? I am blown away.

5 out of 5 stars It's Jill...need I say more?.......2007-01-31

Jill Scott, consistent from start to finish, never fails to satisfy. It's no secret that Jill writes and delivers a song with equal intensity, however, we had no clue how well she could collaborate with industry greats, not only holding her own, but often outshining music's seasoned veterans. Who is Jill Scott? If the answer to that question has not been clearly answered by The Experience and Beautifully Human, one listen to Collaborations will clarify Jill Scott as the last of the real deal entertainers, no gimmicks, no distracting stage shows or music videos, fully clothed, confident and intelligent, her talent alone speaks for itself. She is the role model that our little girls should see. I guess she proves that there is no need for bling bling, when you can sing sing. And if it wasn't enough to get Ms. Scott doing her thing with the likes of the Isley Brothers, Al Jarreau, Mos Def and Common, this Limited Edition, 2 CD Set, contains bonus material boasting a live performance from the Roots, the original demo recording of You Got Me and sample songs showcasing Hidden Beach Record talent. With so many artist putting out mediocre 1-hit discs, you simply can't go wrong with this one. BUY THIS CD!!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One-ups the remix album.......2006-10-10

Impressive compilation/collaboration from one of the most creative, aggressive, and intelligent electronic artists out today, flies by despite the repeated remix of Verbal, due the the inspiring array of interpretations, mixed with the first half of originals, also hitting the mark, as is usual for Tobin.

4 out of 5 stars Another bullseye for Amon Tobin.......2004-02-07

Amon Tobin has made some staggeringly difficult music in his short but prolific career. Although to some his music is instantly accessable and listenable, but to me Amon Tobin was someone you had to sit down and get to know, learn the quirks of his music, pull it apart then reassemble it to truly apperciate what he was doing(why? because I'm pretenious like that). So it came as quite a shock to find that Collaborations & Remixes is as immediate as it is. I was expecting to learn to love Tobin all over again(not a problem) but right out the gate I was shocked and impressed by the quality of what could have been an experiment gone sour.

The CD is split into unequal halves. The first 5 tracks represent the collaborations and the second half, well yeah you got it. The tracks on the collaboration all have that Tobin signature stamp on them but what helps this album is how much life each distinctive artist brings to the table(and a few surprises to boot). Kid Koala opens the album off with a surprisingly moody number that focuses mainly on creating atmosphere instead of virtuouso scratching. Infact, the entire album seems a bit darker and downbeat then his usual batch of stuff. Something of a continuation of the mood that Mighty Micro People left off on on Out From Out Where. From there, each collaborative artist leave their own sound and flavor combined tastfully with Tobin's already masterful production, leaving a fresh breath of air into Tobin's own signature style.

From the collaborations come 4 truly distinctive remixes of one of the best songs(and singles) from Out From Out Where. Verbal was already a song made of cut ups but here, name artists like Prefuse 73 and Kid 606 decide to take it for their own spin. Prefuse adds his usual gorgous digital cut up mess while Kid 606 adds a harder, energetic edge to the song. The other two lesser known remixers give it a far more downtemp feel which sort of disrupts the energy that Prefuse and Kid provide but still offer their own unique takes on a great song.

Honestly, I could not think of a better place to get started for anyone who wants to approach Amon Tobin's music. Its far easier to get into then the difficult but rewarding Supermodified or Out From Out Where. For its price, you get not only Tobin, but a taste of some of electronic music's front runners as well as some new commers. Certainly one of the most enjoyable releases of last year. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars STILL GROWING ON ME!!!.......2003-11-04

I only found it fitting to get this CD being that it beckoned me everytime I would enter the "Dance" section at Borders, and since I have become an Amon Tobin fan. "Hey, $10--what do I have to lose?" So I got "Collaborations and Remixes"... right now, though, I'm feeling somewhat indifferent as to whether I like the material here or not...some of the music like the opening "Untitled", "I'll Have the Waldorf Salad" and the "Verbal" remixes do have Amon Tobin's signature orchestra- meets-cut'n'paste D&B touch, but in comparison to his material on the classic "Bricolage" and "Supermodified", this "remix" CD is "common"! But then what remix CD really grabs you unless it's Herbert's "Secondhand Sounds", but that's a whole nother review. Definitely get "Collaborations and Remixes" if you're fond of Tobin's work and the producers and DJs who have collaborated with him. However, don't expect to be blown away by anything that hasn't been done before.

5 out of 5 stars A truly Deserving 'Collaborations & Remixes' Album...........2003-10-28

As befitting as artist, who is one of the `Intelligent dance music's' most consistently accomplished artists, is a remix/collaborations album of a similarly groundbreaking standard, as with his solo work. "Kid Koala" adds significant weight to the argument with his quirky sample/Scratch aesthetic on "Untitled", proving that music doesn't have to take itself too seriously. "Bonobo" reach into their organically textural bag of tricks and devise a Mediterranean, endlessly breezy sound on the track "I'll have a Waldorf salad", far removed from Amon's Jazz/D'n'B cut & Paste. Both "Prefuse 73" & "Boom Bip" reinterpret Amon's "Verbal" track.....both are tremendous (possibly surpassing the original), with "Prefuse 73" cutting as Glitching things up like a refined `Aphex Twin'. And "Boom Bip" favours dark, stark, minimal sounds....choosing mood & Atmosphere to push the remix into places the original couldn't even being to think about, with a strong list on contributors & remixers all handing in a consistently fantastic standard of work, there isn't anything on here that I feel is weaker in comparison to any other track, (although people are undoubtedly likely to have their favourite tracks), and as if that wasn't enough, it retails at a mid-price.

5 out of 5 stars excellent collaborations.......2003-10-06

this album shows that, when given something to work with, some actual content from his collaborators, amon tobin can make some incredible music. this is shown in the first few tracks of the album. the remixes are the truly great part, taking the only good song from "out from out where" (which was already heavily influenced by prefuse 73) and hearing the unique styles of four great musicians interpret it. The songs have very little in common, aside from the requisite sample cut-up vocals. prefuse does what he always does, with weird tones and unmatchably creative beats. topo gigio puts on heavy atmosphere and creates an enveloping, dramatic song, also the most true to the original. kid 606 turns it into dancehall, and screws around with every element of the song as much as possible, making a fun short-attention-span piece. and of course boom bip brings in some real instruments and gives the album some class. this is the best cd i've seen in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Class-act Bhangra.......2006-11-20

Sukshinder Shinda has been one of the best producers in Bhangra for many years. This is a project of duets where he sings with a different high profile Bhangra singer for each song. Great songs, great production. Many people in the Bhangra scene didn't think this album lived up to expectations but I think history will prove it to be a classic.
