Amazon.com's Best of 2000

David Gray's glorious fourth record explodes in a wellspring of spacious, electronica-tinged folk-pop. He uses his bright growl of a voice to memorable effect, chewing on vowel sounds while spinning odes to lost love, the resiliency of young hearts, and the pain of experience. Gray's work finds the universality at the heart of folk music and tweaks it just enough to make it relevant for alternative audiences. --Matthew Cooke

Amazon.com

English singer-songwriter David Gray recorded his fourth album, White Ladder, at home in 1998 and self-released it after three previous albums garnered critical acclaim and little else. Opening for the likes of Dave Matthews and Radiohead helped up his profile and led to Matthews choosing White Ladder as the U.S. debut for his new ATO label. It's not difficult to hear what attracted Matthews to Gray. There's a strong dose of romantic wanderlust to these tunes. "This Year's Love," with its somber piano notes, captures the drifter feel of earlier Gray work (such as the remarkable "A Gathering of Dust" from his debut)."Sail Away" is "Dock of the Bay" from another side of the shore. Gray clearly loves words, and the way he emphasizes them--spitting them out in contempt one minute, soulfully stretching a note out at other moments--lends his music drama. It's no wonder he's been compared to so heavy an improviser as Van Morrison. There's a spiritual connection there that this strong release makes only more obvious. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars David Gray's best so far.......2007-07-04

The lyrics and music are incredible on this cd. The singer-songwriter's life experience seeps in as richness in the lyrics and in the feeling of these fine tunes. This cd has a cathartic quality to it that I usually look for in acoustic folk music. But the electronic sounds and everything really add to this cd. It's a great listen.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-06-17

This album is really great. Very mellow music, almost sad but not quite, and not whiney or a pity party like some others in the genre. David Gray's voice is great to sing a long with, and perfect for a car ride, or a night at home and a glass of wine. Virtually all the songs on this album are good, and you won't find yourself fast forwarding much.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful and well done.......2007-06-08

This is an excellent album. David Gray's voice is soulful and hypnotic. When a tune is done you want to hear more. Best cuts are Babylon and Sail Away.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry to be different but..........2007-04-27

I first heard this album several years ago, in 2001 in fact, and fondly remembered "Babylon" and "Please Forgive Me" ( the video to the latter is pretty cool ) so as I hear Babylon more and more on the radio I got caught up in it's beauty and ordered the whole album. My girlfriend and I agree the rest is whiny and dragging. 2 tracks does not make a whole album.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-04-18

David Gray's 'White Ladder' is, quite simply, the most amazing album (CD) that I have ever owned. Each song is brilliant, and full of emotion. The entire album is superb. For the life of me, I cannot understand why we (Americans) will buy millions of copies of pop fluff, and overlook true musical genius. White Ladder was my first David Gray album, but I have gone on to buy several of his others. I am never disappointed with the depth and raw emotion that he pours into his music. David Gray is surely one of the most talented musicians of this century. Anyone who can listen to tracks like "This Year's Love" and "Night Blindness" without feeling an ache in their chests better check their pulse...

I am sure that anyone reading this review will agree with me on the fact that m. Jarre's status as a composer is beyond legend. What a pure genius. HOWEVER, I simply have to write this review to warn his fans what a huge disappointment this album is. Frist, the quality of the recording is tinny and insipid [I am not some picky audiophile, but live albums usually leave a lot to be desired]. Most important is that the arrangements and their performance by this orchestra is just totally unsatisfying. Lets face it, what we all love about Jarre is the power of his music in relationship to the films for which it was done. We want the evocative quality of the real scores, pretty much as they were for the films. You wont find it in this album[close your eyes and think of your favorite film score. You can hear it in your mind easily. now imagine hearing an album where the arrangement of it that you hear bears little relationship to what you lovingly remember. Thats the reason for my profound dissatisfaction]... So just buy the 'real' soundtracks and enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars "Ageless Composer..Legendary Icon Extraordinaire..Jarre".......2002-01-21

Highly skilled composer one of the "Old Guard" film scoring Giants...belongs to a very exclusive club of longivity...creating some of the most brilliant scores ever to grace filmland...Mauice Jarre can write music for any story-line...from any country in the world...one who fits the bill of legendary icon in his most worthy profession...FILM COMPOSER EXTRAORDINAIRE!

Not being one so taken with LIVE RECORDINGS, but this 2-CD-Set has much merit, quality and enjoyment, all music composed and yes, conducted by MAURICE JARRE, with very capable musical organizations~ BBC Concert Orchestra,Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, how's that for a Grand Slam line up...but let's see what musical scores make the grade of "stand outs" and the ever popular "highlights".

Starting with the stand outs ~ "A PASSAGE TO INDIA"(1984), string section opens with counterpoints from percussion, giving you a sense of traveling through India, brass takes over with a main theme, gives the ten minute Suite body---"FATAL ATTRACTION" (1987), solo piano sends chills through your memories of the story line, almost textures of "Classical Jazz", blending eerie strings with muted brass joining in for substance, reminds me of some of 1940's murder mysteries with Bogart or Mitchum---"RYAN'S DAUGHTER"(1970), haunting theme with melodic overtones, give way to the percussion section, moving within the unforgettable melody always stumping the music fans, where have I heard this before?

What you've all been waiting for...the HIGHLIGHTS ~ "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA"(1962), exceptional score for this stunning film, won an Oscar for "Best Original Score 1962", percussion and brass draws you into the desert, living each passage from an unforgettable arrangement that sits high on the composers list on his achievements---but the one everyone remembers for orchestration, originality and lasting impression of "Classic Soundtracks" is "DR, ZHIVAGO"(1965), sweeping Russian melodies with poignant blends of the windwood sections, listen as the counterpoints abound reeking with passion as the love of two women for one man, the Main Theme is probably one of the most recognizable in the world.

Milan Records has given us an additonal score "SUNSHINE"(1999), a beautiful haunting score that has Jarre's signature in place, the chorus gives off a heavenly sound of "Pure Harmony", counter balanced by the orchestration, gotta love it!

2 out of 5 stars Serious, yes. Good, no........2003-08-26

I honestly don't get why people think DG is that good. You certainly shouldn't mention him in the same breath as Dylan, as one reviewer misleadingly does. Gray has far more in common with Phil Collins. It's easy listening for the masses, and while he can write the odd catchy tune, like Collins used to, his music is no more than pleasant, slightly self indulgent, four minute ditties. Anyone who thinks he is more significant than that really should broaden their musical horizons, as indeed David Gray should himself.

    5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2003-08-12

This is without doubt the best album of the last decade (and possibly more). I have to agree with the last "reviewer": if you're not touched by this album and by david's lyrycs and music, run in front of a bus, it's your only chance!

    5 out of 5 stars understanding.......2001-06-12

I was browsing this website when i came across a review of White Ladder by someone who i can only describe as a tasteless fool. David Gray is arguably THE most innovative and exciting artist this century. For someone with such passion for his talent to emerge through the wrath of endless rubbish boy and girl bands only serves to promote his esteem.

Admitedly some of the tracks are sombre, but they reflected his current personal tragedy, a combination of the break up of his parents marriage and the eventual death of his father. Never since Bob Dylan has someone written such melodic and meaningful rhythms with the subtle lyrics to match. For almost ten years now this man has been producing material that is nothing short of awesome. Anyone who is not positively affected by his raw talent does not deserve the gift of hearing

Thanks in anticipation of the new album.

1 out of 5 stars This is the Devil's music.......2001-04-07

David Gray is proof positive that there is an omnipotent evil entity in the universe and it has a really bad taste in music. When the day of judgement finally arrives it won't be all fire and brimstone and the four horsemen, it'll be the Corrs, Robbie Williams, Geri Halliwell and this bloke. This is a painful experience for me because I have to think back to being subjected to listening to this album in a friend's car for an interminabley long journey - or at least it seemed that way - of at least five miles. Babylon and Please Forgive Me (if my songs are a little dull) are big hit singles, but god they're boring. And This Year's Love has got to be the most maudlin piece of self pity since R Williams' Better Man. Don't take my word for it, watch David Gray perform on TV and observe his head bobble around in an unnaturally sinister way. See, he is possessed.

    5 out of 5 stars Selmer Review.......2001-02-04

It's interesting that people are just now taking notice of David Gray almost ten years into his career. He's been making stunning heartfelt music since 1993 and 'White Ladder' is no exception. It's been billed by critics and by david himself as his most simply produced album to date. On past albums, overproduction only got in the way anyway. Oddly, this album feels very lush and organic despite the addition of electronic effects. 'My Oh My' comes from a place that is so fragile, it is almost broken. A recurring theme throughout the album, is redemption and strength through loss and heartache. Even somber tracks such as 'This Year's Love', 'Nightblindness' and the aforementioned 'My Oh My' have rays of bright hope shining through the fog. David's voice has never sounded better. Crystal clear and expressive. The bonus track on this import version, is an almost bluesy little track called, 'Over My Head'. It rounds out the album quite nicely. The only real disappointment is a track called 'Babylon 2'.(It appears on the domestic release also) It is basically just a shortened version of the original 'Babylon'. They should've included another b-side that doesn't appear here called 'Tell Me More Lies'. Anyway, on 'White Ladder', David Gray achieves something that many artists attempt, but very few ever accomplish. Timelessness. Similar Artists:Dave Mathew's Band,Toad the Wet Sprocket,Rufus Wainwright,Bob Dylan,Van Morrison.

I have been a fan of Dave Matthews Band for a long time and often see him making comments about David Gray. Recently we purchased a lot of CDs and "White Ladder" was with it. I slipped it on and wasn't disappointed. Excellent work. I'll be keeping me eye out for any other David Gray CDs that come my way.

Personal favourite on album: "My Oh My"

4 out of 5 stars Great Success Surely Around The Corner!.......2000-07-14

David Gray has been exteremely successful in Ireland for the last number of years-and I think this album will soon make him a household name in many places. This is his first album on his own label and it sounds like he's put his heart, soul and mortgage on it's success.Compared to previous albums the production on this album is light years ahead of the others.Added to this are ten excellent songs, which go to prove Gray is as good a singer-songwriter as there is anywhere in the English speaking world. This c.d. has got every type of song- most suitable for contemplative late night listening.'Please Forgive Me','Babylon' are songs that would grace any singles chart.'This Years Love' is an excellent heartfelt song also. The best part of the c.d. is his very brave choice for a finale-I thought Soft Cell's 'Say Hello,Wave Goodbye' is a difficult song to cover and even though I was a huge fan of the original,I have to say that Gray's version even surpasses this.Gray as I write is finally beginning to break into the upper end of the U.K. market with this c.d.-I would whole-heartedly reccomend the rest of the world to follow suit!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Babylon.......2000-07-07

David Grey is a true artist. This is a fabulous album you'll never get tired of. Babylon is superb. I didnt know there was a hidden track before the first song. I'll have to check it. I have now ordered Flesh and hope it's as good. Anyone who likes Van Morisson or Bob Dylan will love this. GET IT!
