Product Description
Twiggs is a band featuring some pedigree artists, like singer Caroline of Ugglas, a charismatic lady who had international success a few years back as a solo act. From classic Swedish rock band the Nomads comes Hasse Östlund on guitar and the rhythm section from cult band Monostar. Together they form a band with plenty of power and the ability to vary their sound without losing that punch. 'Waltzing' will be the first release from their 2005 album.

1 out of 5 stars Not for the serious flautist.......2006-06-10

Most of the tracks on this CD consist of saccharine fluff, such as Disney, show-tunes, etc. If I buy a flute recording, I want to hear some serious music, not this ghastly schmaltz. And I hate to say it, I'm not a huge fan of Galway's playing style. It's too light and airy, just on the edge of going into overtones. He overuses his vibrato, especially on the higher notes. When you want them to just smoothly soar with rich tone, they just sort of flutter about. He does have impeccable technique and speed, but his tone leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. Seek out another artist!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of James Galway.......2005-09-23

Really is one of the best of James Galway, if not the very best. Easy listening, soothing, relaxing - easy to enjoy

3 out of 5 stars Lightweight.......2005-08-24

Admirers of James Galway as a superb classical flutist, of whom I am one, should be forewarned that this 2002 release has been packaged by the mass merchandisers for the "crossover" crowd and the mass market: there's slim pickin's here for serious music lovers. The first CD contains brief, lightweight classical "hits" in "arranged" versions, basically encore bonbons, while almost the entire second CD is devoted to ephemeral, forgettable pop fluff. There's not much of substance here; given Galway's vast (over 50 recordings) discography, the classical music lover would be well advised to look elsewhere.

Album Description

...Waltzing Alone is wistful, earnest, heart on your sleeve. It speaks to the collective human soul through themes of love and tragedy to which we can all relate, and treasures the most unassuming moments - painting them as some of the most beautiful in life.

At first feeling unoriginal in light of the amount of love songs he turned out for the album, Kevin came to terms with his approach. "The reason love is the greatest theme is that when you're in a relationship, your senses are so heightened; you're lifted out of the banal; you notice more and you see more details," he said. "I think that it's within that idea of a relationship that you learn a lot more about yourself because it's far more dramatic (than normal life) - that's why I write love songs."

...Waltzing Alone features twelve heartfelt tracks, leading with the aforementioned "Philosophia," and into the tale of a first night-swim, "Portmarnock Beach Boy Blue"; what it means to be lovers, "Told You So"; choosing the path of solitude, "Wonderful Wizard"; the chilling yet intimate "Rosanna"; whimsical new love, "I Think I Love You"; inevitability of death based on a Shelley poem of the same title, "Ozymandias"; unfulfilled passion, "A Lifetime in Heat"; a tribute to Leonard Cohen, "Koan"; the Marvin Gaye influenced "Vertigo"; leaving love behind, "Cold Truth"; and finally a simple and lonely piece about the lover who didn't show up, "Tromboner."

5 out of 5 stars Love them.......2007-07-05

The first time I heard the song Philosophia it literally made me stop everything and just listen and in this day and age that's a big deal. But even more enticing is the fact that when the song ended I was left hungry for more. That's the kind of music Guggenheim Grotto creates. One song is just as powerful as the next. Intelligent, soul gripping lyrics and fantastic music combine to make this an album you have to own. The US is just discovering this incredible band so it may be hard to find in your local store, however, I do not believe that will be the case for long. If you like to have the actual CD ordering online may be your best bet for now or you can go to Itunes. I can not wait to see them live. A+++++ from me.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2007-06-11

The Guggenheim Grotto is going to explode into mainstream music in the near future. The album is a phenomenal combination of traditional folk, "I think I Love you" and "A Lifetime in Heat", with the catchy cross over ballads of "I Told You So" and "Wonderful Wizard". Every track is brilliantly written, very accessible, and melodically inviting. After "I Told You So" was the free single of week on itunes in April, I've been hooked, and don't envision my love for this band to fade any time soon.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2007-03-03

This band is on the verge of being huge! They have a mellow coffee shop kinda feel, but just because their sound is mellow does not mean it's lacking! The band has great harmonies and energy. "Told You So" always puts a smile on my face. The vocals on this album are mixed perfectly with the band. Highly recommend this album!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, intelligent music.......2006-12-23

These guys are a great gem waiting to be discovered. I'm convinced it's only a matter of time before they hit it big.

As musicians, these guys are extremely talented, showing mastery as multi-instrumentalists and writing beautiful songs the way it seems like no one writes them any more: songs in 3/4, songs with bridges, etc. (Great live shows, too.) Top that with some beautiful lyrics courtesy of lead singer Kevin May.

"Told You So" is a perfectly crafted pop song. "Portmarnock Beach Boy Blue" is a boogie-fest that ends before you want it to. "I Think I Love You" is a cute country-tinged song about the excitement of new love. "Cold Truth" has to be one of the most beautiful break-up songs ever written. And "Tromboner" sees Mick Lynch, usually the back-up vocal, singing the lyric exactly as a trombonist might play it.

Pure genius, in a beautiful faux-leather cover. Don't wait, buy it today.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-10-18

These guys are simply brilliant!!! This album is unique, and has so many different sounds.
They each play several instruments and coninually switch up what they are playing.
Check them out live if you get the chance!

Leroy Anderson's most famous piece is The Syncopated Clock, which became a well-known television tune in the 1950s. Anderson, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, was one of those composers who new his limitations exactly, and never wrote beyond them. He was a master at orchestral miniatures: short, tuneful pieces of musical fluff--but very high-quality fluff. Anderson lavished as much attention on one of his miniatures as Wagner did on his monster operas. They are the musical equivalent of Fabergé eggs. Slatkin treats these little gems with the loving attention they deserve, and you'll be amazed by how many of the tunes jog your memory. A delight. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars American Light Music.......2005-10-07

Leroy Anderson's music is best equated with the visual works of Norman Rockwell. Anderson, like Rockwell, paints mini-portraits, slices of life, into his musical creations, and with great success.

With this CD, is a compendium of 25 of Leroy Anderson's vast output and each of them, suprisingly, is a gem in and of itself. Anderson is a master of melody, creating the whimsical and the heartfelt. I was amazed to find that a short horn melody in "Horse and Buggy" could move me emotionally and so easily. One concern at purchasing this CD, was that his music might become trite and tired, especially with repeated listening; but Anderson is inventive in melody and he always mixes his songs up with unexpected syncopations and jazzy interpolations, not to mention the unusual battery of percussion needed to visualize the various animals, horse rides, and other crazy situations Anderson puts his orchestra in.

Leonard Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra perform all of this music with the right gusto needed to portray Anderson's version of Americana. The only thing missing, perhaps, is the unbridled energy these works create in a live environment. While "Bugler's Holiday" and "Clarinet Candy" are played with great alacrity, the spark of the moment is lost on a recording format. Notwithstanding, this CD is an excellent choice if you can't get the live experience, excelling in musical quality, and quite frankly, is a lot of fun. Compare and contrast this CD with other Leroy Anderson collections under Arthur Fiedler, Leroy Anderson himself, as well as a Naxos release, and you will find this CD can hold its own rather easily.

4 out of 5 stars Fine but lacks the last ounce of vitality.......2005-05-10

This is a fine Leroy Anderson disc. No one happening upon this disc will likely be seriously disappointed. But wait! Try the recording conducted by the composer himself or the one by Arthur Fieldler before you have any last word. They both have so much verve and vitality that the music literally leaps out of the speakers. The difference hits home immediately after such numbers as Fiddle Faddle or Bugler's Holiday begin. Coming back to Slatkin, you will probably feel that his interepretaton is a bit on a sedate side. However, Slatkin brings wonderful warmth to slower numbers and has the advantage of modern digital recording. The choice is yours.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem Of American Music.......2004-07-11

Leroy Anderson is certainly one of the memorable and popular of American light music composer and this CD of his music really shines with the strains of the St Louis Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. Simply magical. Mr Slatkin plays the music as close as Leroy Anderson intended to and not distorted any arrangements of the music. The album opens with the opulent 'Belle Of The Ball' and it waltzes ever so beautifully in digital stereo and sweeps you to an imaginary ballroom and completely swoons you. The ever popular seasonal piece 'Sleigh Ride' is stil a delight with the young at heart. The other titles in this superb CD are the immortal 'Blue Tango', the serene 'Serenata', the dreamy 'Forgotten Dreams' and the title track of the CD, the playful 'The Typewriter'. Though this album can't compare to the original Leroy Anderson albums and the evergreen Boston Pops with Arthur Fieldler, it is a fitting tribute to a gem in music that is Leroy Anderson.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Recording of a Lovable American Composer's Music.......2004-04-08

I've always loved the music of Leroy Anderson. It has a magical quality that tends to pull a person right into the piece. For example, who, when listening to "Sleigh Ride," does not imagine going on a ride through the snow in Vermont on a winter's day? Titles such as the" Waltzing Cat," "The Syncopated Clock" and "Belle of the Ball" all sound as their titles imply. While the music could be termed `light classical," musicians playing the pieces have to be versatile as the solo parts for works such as "Bugler's Holiday" and "Clarinet Candy" easily demonstrate.

I will have to admit, when it comes to Anderson's music, usually no one beats the Boston Pops, especially under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. For many years Anderson was a collaborator of Fielder's and many of the Pops best known arrangements are those of Anderson. Perhaps this is why the Boston Pops performances of Anderson's music have an authentic feel to them. Yet if there is a close second to The Boston Pops' performances, it would be this collection by Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony. Slatkin has a love and appreciation for the music and lead the orchestra in a competent and enjoyable manner.

This collection includes many of Anderson's favorites such as "Blue Tango," "Phantom Regiment," "Trumpeter's Lullaby," and "Fiddle Faddle" as well as many of Anderson's lesser known works. Which make the collection a real treat.

5 out of 5 stars A whimsical pick-me-up.......2002-09-02

The collaboration between conductor Arthur Fiedler and composer Leroy Anderson gave birth to the unique sound of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Anderson was without peer in writing works for "light" orchestra: short, often whimsical, always pleasant pieces for symphonic ensembles. One of Anderson's trademarks was coming up with creative ways for the orchestra to portray common sounds from the outside world. Anderson's two best-known pieces employ this technique: a trumpet simulates a horse's whinny at the end of "Sleigh Ride," while woodblocks indicate the rhythmic imbalance of "The Syncopated Clock." Although Anderson never became a household name, many Americans are probably familiar with several of his other works, including "The Typewriter" and "Blue Tango."

This CD features Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony, but there is another great CD of Anderson's works by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. While both recordings are great, I give the edge to this CD. While Fiedler naturally has a better feel for Anderson's music (most notably on the "Sandpaper Ballet" and "Jazz Pizzicato"), Slatkin has recorded nine pieces not found on the Fiedler CD, including the delightful "Phantom Regiment," "First Day of Spring," "Forgotten Dreams," "Horse and Buggy," and my personal favorite, "Saraband."

This recording is a pleasure from beginning to end. I often find myself playing this CD two or three times in a row (and sometimes pressing "shuffle" after that) because Anderson's relentlessly happy music makes me feel that everything is right with the world.

A good cd for any violinist or fiddler who wants to learn Jay&Molly's waltzes. As reviewer M Hansen indicated, you can get this one much cheaper as an out-of-print copy from Amazon sellers for a fraction of the new price!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sweetest album ever!.......2005-10-19

This is the perfect 'cabin in winter with your honey' music, although I'll give it a shake in the summer too probably. Beautiful arrangements, relaxed rhythms, interesting variety of tunes (not all waltzes) make this a very lovely addition to anyone's collection. Need more glow? How's this then; it's all very partner danceable!

5 out of 5 stars This is one GREAT CD.......2001-07-20

Generally if you buy a CD that you are unfamiliar with, it takes several playings before you can either really start to appreciate it, or decide it wasn't worth it. Not this CD. What a great mix of traditional folk music! This CD has immediately vaulted to the top of my list. It has violins, violas, mandolins, guitars, bass, pedal steel guitar and drums. And the artists really are artists at what they do. Selections vary in style from "haunting" to "toe-tapping." If you like this kind of music -- get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars BARKING DOGS, WALTZING CATS, AND A RIDE WITH ROCCO!.......2006-12-05

Every year about this time, I like to add some new Christmas related item to my collection of Ammyland Reviews, Lists, or Guides. This year it was between reviewing The Jingle Dogs album, where they bark holiday favorites, or THE BEST OF LEROY ANDERSON, where the composer conducts his own miniature orchestral compositions, including the classic version of his original instrumental, SLEIGH RIDE. If you're reading this, then you already know that the annoying canines got the boot. And they ran all the way to the Spring of 2007 with their tails between their legs. "And don't come back! Shut them dawgs up, April!"

OK, where were we? Oh, yeah: It was in December of 1996 when I kept hearing this particular instrumental version of Sleigh Ride played on the radio station I listened to every day while delivering fresh squeezed organic juice to a grocery store or health food store near you. This was the most imaginative, briskly paced, and snowy version of Sleigh Ride I'd ever heard: the horses were clip-clopping, the whip was cracking, and I was bundled up warmly with a lovely lady friend at my side in this imaginary Santa suit-red sleigh polished to a high sheen after twelve coats of wax and a Laurie Partridge in a pear tree. (Yeah, I know I get a little carried away, but what are ya gonna do?)

Soon I was obsessed with that musical piece. "Who does THAT version, Mr. DJ Man? Who does it?" Finally, on the thirteenth day of Christmas, my DJ said to me, "That was Sleigh Ride - Leroy Anderson." I was about to yell at the radio, "I know it was Sleigh Ride, and my name's not Leroy Anderson!" when all of a sudden, the light bulb lit up above my head... in the same moment that the light bar on the police car behind me lit up. (When the cop finally managed to catch up to me, he found me at the counter of my local music store, paying for a copy of THE BEST OF LEROY ANDERSON.)

To this day, my four favorite instrumentals of all-time are MOONLIGHT SERENADE; THE TRUTH WILL ALWAYS BE; BUMPIN' ON SUNSET; and SLEIGH RIDE. But not just any version of Sleigh Ride. No! It must be THIS recording, the one found on THIS disc, conducted by Anderson himself. I believe that Anderson may have recorded Sleigh Ride more than once, but THIS 1950 version is the one you want. Hey, would I lie to you about something so important this late in the season, and risk finding only lumps of coal in my stocking again?

Of course, there's other "stuffs" here that you might like also. As the informative liner notes say, "Many of these pieces have become part of the musical fabric of American life. Most everyone knows one or more of his tunes, though they may not know the name of the composer [*It's Leroy Anderson, remember?*] or even the title of the composition." For instance, there's BLUE TANGO, the first instrumental piece ever to sell over one million copies. And THE SYNCOPATED CLOCK, used as the theme for "The Late Show" on WCBS-TV in New York for over 25 years.

Anderson was incredibly imaginative and he composed each piece almost completely in his head. He stated, "When I'm making something up I never play a melody on the piano, because your fingers are used to falling into familiar patterns. You don't give your imagination free rein that way. In other words, your fingers are holding you back." I find his brief musical pieces to be very evocative. For instance, when I hear SUMMER SKIES, in my mind I seem to see images of Lee Remick romping in a bathing suit at the beach as if in a black and white montage from some classic movie of the 1950s. Or when I hear THE WALTZING CAT, I always seem to imagine a cat waltzing in my mind. THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING always makes me think of the first day of Spring ("Shut them dawgs up, April!"), and FORGOTTEN DREAMS always reminds me of... hmmm... I forget. But anyway, SLEIGH RIDE takes me for a ride in a sleigh in my wintry mind. And just how imaginative WAS Leroy Anderson? Get this! He composed Sleigh Ride during a 1948 July heat wave in Woodbury, Connecticut! OK? Uh-huh. That's what I'M talkin' `bout! So, what else ya wanna know?

For me, Christmas season begins the day after Thanksgiving every year, when I pull out my copy of THE BEST OF LEROY ANDERSON and blast the one piece of music that says "Christmas" to me like no other Christmas song does - this 1950 recording of Sleigh Ride. And I usually play the song at least once a day up through and including the 25th of December. Then I put the compact disc away for another year (after all, who really wants to hear about a waltzing cat? I mean really?!) Get into the swing of the Holiday spirit with THE BEST OF LEROY ANDERSON. Otherwise, I may just have to send Rocco over there to take you for a little (sleigh) ride... if you catch my (snow)drift.

5 out of 5 stars Leroy Anderson rings a bell .. and wood blocks .. and .......2006-02-01

I have been a fan of Leroy Anderson ever since I played his music in middle school band in the 1950's. His classics were very inventive: imitating a typewriter (remember those?), a cat on a piano, a sleigh ride with bells and whips cracking, bugle calls, and so much more, most of it composed for highlighting specific instruments: trumpet, wood block, sandpaper block, pizzicato violin. Anderson is truly an accomplished, American composer. In this CD he conducts his own compositions. And the CD insert also taught me more about Anderson, the man, and his involvement with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Buy it, read it, and listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Lite Classical Composer.......2005-09-23

Leroy Anderson was one of the best Lite Classical American Composers of the mid 20th Century and this CD won't dissappoint you. Taken from original recordings that Anderson conducted you'll hear the orchestrations as he wanted them to be heard. There's a mix of familiar and unfamiliar pieces that are all satisfying to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2007-03-08

I'm one of those The Sound of Music addicted, having lost the track of how many times I've seen it whatever the format is. Therefore, it was basically for curiosity that I've bought this CD. It's a fine recording that takes you to a typical, cosy family reunion. The male voices are not impressive and I wouldn't include the flute solos in the CD. But the final result is very pleasant, excellent to listen in the car while you're driving in the countryside (before lunch, of course).

5 out of 5 stars The original sound of their music. .......2006-01-15

The original von Trapp Family's twenty years of touring and performing internationally had finished, and Maria Augusta von Trapp had written their story in three books and begun several decades of missionary work in New Guinea by the time "The Sound of Music" hit Broadway, and Julie Andrews later sang about her favorite things in a top-earning film. I don't know if the original von Trapp Family benefitted from show and film royalties; they certainly deserved to, for they worked very hard perfecting, under their conductor Dr Franz Wasner, their natural ensemble and music-making talents.

The results may be heard in this first-class CD reissue of recordings they made in New York in 1952 and 1956. The family amassed a large repertoire, collecting items while touring, for example "Waltzing Mathilda" from Australia. The selection here includes a cross-section (loosely titled "Folk Songs") and some of their instrumental items involving recorders, cello and harpsichord. Perhaps the items from their rich Austrian culture are the most satisfying.

This is the second DGG CD release of their recordings. Duration 52 minutes. I recall from my LP collecting days, that there are enough Trapp Family recordings to fill a third CD. I look forward to it.

4 out of 5 stars New Faces of 1952 .......2007-05-13

This is the original broadway cast album. It contains songs which went on to become hits for their performers, such as Lizzie Borden, Lucky Pierre, Love is a simple thing, Guess who I saw today, Bal petit bal and Monotomous. Now re-released on Jasmine label, it was originally released by RCA Victor so the quality is excellent, but from the mono era.

Loved having this on the CD form. I wore out the 33 1/3 record. Thank you for carrying this CD!

1 out of 5 stars Where is Time For Tea?.......2005-12-04

I bought a recording of this show in the middle '70s when RCA was re-isuing a lot of their rare soundtracks. The record made a big deal about isuing a lost track called "Time For Tea" from this show sung by June Carroll and Alice Ghostley. This track is not included on this CD. Luckily I still had the record, and was able to make a version of the CD and add the second last track just before Lizzy Borden. Buyer beware however, this CD is not complete!

1 out of 5 stars If You Tapped Your Fingers to the Music in Waiting for Goffman . . ........2005-08-16

Hey, don't waste your money unless you dig the score of really crummy musicals. Some people do. If you are not among that select group then don't believe the good reviews by other buyers (bless their hearts) like I did. Note that Amazon doesn't offer excepts from this aged dog. Good strategy. I bought this cd for the Lizzie Borden song on it but the arrangers even ruined that with a silly bridge section about Lizzie ruining the singers' weekly hoedown. Terrible. Maybe I can unload this cd in a used music store and get a few dollars back. I hope so.

5 out of 5 stars What about the movie?.......2005-07-01

Great, great show! But are any of you people aware that "New Faces of 1952" came out as a movie. The entire stage show was shot mainly from the front as if from a really expensive orchestra seat. Includes Paul Lynde and Ronny Graham in a howling send-up of "Death of a Salesman." Paul Lynde in tattered jungle gear at an afternoon ladies lecture describing his latest safari to darkest Africa. And Eartha doing "Monotonous!" The whole show was filmed.

NOW where is a VHS or DVD of that film? The world is waiting!

5 out of 5 stars Still singin' those mountain ballads after all these years.......2006-12-05

Country music fans today, just listen to the music and enjoy it for what it is, but did we ever really think about the starts of country music? Who started it? What kind of songs did they sing? Were they any good? Did their children follow in their footsteps and were they sucessful?
So many questions!! This CD is the answer. The first family of country music was the Carter Family, A.P., Sara, and Maybelle of Clinch Mountain, VA. But they were much more than mountain hilbillies who liked to party on friday nights. They wrote songs about lost love, the place they knew and loved, and most of all, just fun songs.
We start off with the legendary. "Keep on the Sunny Side," the Carter's theme song. This song is basically about how if we just look on the bright side of things, they aren't so bad after all. "Storms and clouds will in time pass away, and the sun again will shine, bright and clear."
Hey June Carter fans? Did you know where "Wildwood Flower" came from? It was from the good ol' Carter Family! Actually, it was one of their first hits, probably the most reknown carter family song in the world. About lost love, it's a song you'll want to sing 24/7!
"Worried Man Blues," is my very favorite Carter Family song. It has a catchy tune, and a good beat. The song is about a man who is sentenced to go to prison, but he has no idea what he's done. Filled with fun and laughter, this will become and family favorite.
"My Clinch Mountain Home," tells you alot about the Carter's backaround history. It reflects the carter's lives from "Ole Virginny."
"Foggy Mountain Top," is a great song. It features Sara's yodeling, and Maybelle's great guitar pickin'. This song, like "My Clinch Mountain Home", secretly shares backaround information about life as a Carter as well.
Ah, "Single Girl, Married Girl," the Carter's first hit, and undoubtfully their most sucessful. This is a solo for Sara, and also a solo for her autoharp.
In "My Old Cottage Home," A.P. does most of the singing, which is rare since he usually only did backup. Very similar to "My Clinch Mountain Home," but also very different. It's one of my favorites, so yuo will proabaly liek it too.
"The Valley of Shanandoah," is a very sad song. It tells a story about how a man fell in love with a beautiful girl in the past summer and promises to return to her next year so they can be married. Sadly, when the man returns, he finds that his true love had passed away into the great kingdom above. Teh song may be sad, but it capture your heart.
"Chewing Gum," is a really fun song to sing, and it really helps past the tiem away. A song that Sara wrote when she was a child, "Chewing Gum," features many funny lines that will make you laugh out loud as if you were watching Hee-Haw!
If you buy this CD, it's liek hearing the Carter's story through music. It's truly any country msuic fan's treasure. Be sure to read my other revies for June Carter Cash's "Press On", "Wildwood Flower", "Keep on teh Sunyn Side: Her life in Music, and "Live Recordings from the Lousiana Hayride."

June
