Briefly. This was the day Rory Gallagher upstaged Jimi Hendrix.Rorys first band Taste blew Hendrix away this day on the isle of man.Great album, sound quality is poor.

5 out of 5 stars Rory and Robin show Jimi the door ............2007-04-05

You all know the score by now - fewer and fewer people are challenging the opinion that Rory Gallagher was perhaps the finest, most fiery and most consistent guitarist of the last 50 years and, thank God, he left lots and lots of proof.

Just before going on stage for the Isle of Wight set, Taste had their gear stolen and so had to play on borrowed kit - and just look what they achieved. Rory manages to produce bursts of speed and fire on the old Strat without ever entering the dreaded realms of widdly woo inhabited by such as Van Halen, Satriani and the whole ghastly lot of them, however good they may be technically.

What's Going on?, the opener for On the Boards (buy NOW), just steams and roars with the whole band's interlocked ability. Sinner Boy has the most staggering slide solo and Feel So Good has the most wonderful intro and outro - and Rory is at double speed on this. Catfish, by then their show stopper, is a true show stopper: but the whole set is really really good and full of class. McCraken on bass and John Wilson on kit are very good and often underestimated. They push Rory on and challenge him to new heights.

I know a lot of folk who went to this festival and they all talked with awe in their voices about Taste and Procol Harum, with Robbie Trower at that stage. They all agreed, too, that Hendrix was, sadly as often, out of tune, out of time, horribly stoned and uninspiring. Legend and fond memory has changed this view, but I saw Rory make Hendrix look very small at the Woburn Abbey festival in 68,with a pretty grim bass and drummer, so I believe it. Hendrix' live recordings are mostly quite unlistenable, Rory's are almost all fantastic. I think that posterity may have made the biggest error of all time in putting Hendrix on a pedestal and forgetting Rory G. He wouldn't have thought so, of course - far too modest and self effacing.

This is a very good and very exciting performance. Just remind yourself, or learn for the first time, who was the real blues guitarist and singer of the 60s and 70s. Yes indeed - and great vocals too. Remember also that these were young kids, all younger than the memnbers of, say, Fall Out Boy. There's a lesson there somewhere about "progress" .....

Indispensible - to redress the balance a little about who "got" the blues from the outset.

5 out of 5 stars Raw sound from 1970.......2004-12-31

A unique blues sound out of Ireland.Fronted by blues legend Rory Gallagher, this live recording captures the spirit of the Isle Of Wight Festival (Hendrix played the same festival).
Complete with feedback and a snare drum that rattles with the bass lines. Good road music !

4 out of 5 stars Great performance from Rory.......2004-03-24

Rory Gallager was one of the last true great guitarists.
This CD shows his talent evolving, to I believe his peak in 1974 with the Irish Tour CD and DVD also available.

A master blues guitarist with vocals more fiery than Eric Burdon.

This CD has average sound but worth getting for the performance of Sinner Boy alone.

Rory Gallager is the guitarist Eric Clapton should have been in the 70s, listen to this and you will know why.

5 out of 5 stars If it's the blues you want.............2003-01-02

For me this disc along with "Live Taste" is the high point of the late Rory Gallagher's recorded work and also sets the view that Rory Gallagher was taste on it's ear.Throughout this set the rhythm section of McCracken and Wilson support ,cajole and at times threaten to upstage one of the best blues guitarists ever to set foot on a stage. This is a no holds barred blues rage from start to finish, these guys play with a passion and commitment that no longer seems to exist in rock music.I have no idea who followed them onstage at the Isle of Wight, but I bet they took a long time to set up,this was no easy act to follow.Another reviewer has described this set as incendiary and I couldn't agree more.
The sound quality on this disc is fairly ordinary(mine came with a sticker claiming it had been re-mastered)but I still have to give it 5 stars. If it's the blues you want...look no further.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff,Horrible remastering..........2001-07-18

As they did so many times before,"taste" did not disappoint this time as well.a truly remarkable preformence of this powerful trio, this time recorded live in a swiss casino.gallagherr's guitar as usuall is stunning and razor sharp, along side with the heavy support from Mcracken(bass)and Wilson(drums),playing their usual set(including "gambling blues")apparently in their last concert together.but watch out, here comes the catch:and it is necessary to ask:who remasterd this cd'? the sound here is so bad, disturbed frequency by background noises.it is almost unbearable to listen to it.you will have to raise the volume on your stereo real high in order to enjoy this one.for "taste" die hard fans only.for your own good get the digitally remastred version instead.Still after all it leaves a taste for more.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and beautiful.......2006-02-21

Good traveling music, good working/thinking/reading music, good do-nothing music. It's not jazz, more new-age but not really...it's hard to describe. Beautiful African-themed harmonies of some voice and mostly music, with African animal sounds or weather sounds in the background, that combine with perfect rhythms to create a thoroughly good CD. Worth getting if you enjoy any of the above! By the way, "Temba" means "Hope".

I like everything on this album except one song. I think that is #5, or whichever one there is a woman singing...I don't know what she's saying & it's a different pace than other songs so it is not as pleasing to me.

If you'd like a travel-with-kids CD that does not have anyone singing silly tunes in an overtly cheery tone, this is good for that too - the occasional animal sounds and the rhythms are fun.

I Fagiolini is one of those groups where I try to get my hands on every recording they've made. This CD is just another example of why. Great individual voices but the ensemble really comes together well. They make it sound so easy to sing this repertoire. Tomkins is a a master of writing sad laments such as Woe is Me, When David Heard, and I Fagiolini brings out the raw emotion of these pieces. If you are an early music connoisseur, you will love this group. Pick up this CD, and while you're at it, get their Triumphs of Oriana and the two Byrd recordings. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars CHANGING OF THE GUARD.......2001-04-06

The 1969 Woodstock has passed its torch to the Falcon Ridge and Newport Folk Festivals. On this cd we get introduced to the American version of the Cranberries-The Nields, the new Folk Queen-Dar Williams, the Byrds influenced-Kennedy's and a host of good modern singer/ songwriters-Greg Brown,Richard Shindell and Vance Gilbert. "Falcon Ridge" has moments, but no knockout punch. The breathy Patty Larkin "Open Arms" comes close.

5 out of 5 stars A sample of the best of the festival........2000-03-25

I shouldn't say that this music is the best. After ten years of holding the festival, this is just a very small part of all of the wonderful music that has been happening at Falcon Ridge. I have been exposed to so many great artists that I wouldn't have heard anywhere else. Even though it is a folk festival, it is an exposure to all different kinds of music. Hopefully by listening to this compliation, people in the northern east coast area will want to attend this yearly festival, see falconridgefolk.com and find that this wonderful music is as good as the live music.I rate this very high as I was at all of the events as they were recorded and they bring back wonderful memories.
