A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Is it a two-CD set with a particularly thick booklet, or a 562-page book with a compilation album attached? Either way, the unpretentious text by Keith Anderson offers an introduction to the lives and works of dozens of composers, together with recommended recordings from the Naxos and Marco Polo catalogs. Anderson includes a useful 59-page glossary of musical terms and an extensive listing of classical pieces used in films. The odd thing about the 36 extracts and complete pieces on the CDs is that they do not form an A-to-Z at all. Rather, they are arranged chronologically, from 1,000-year-old Gregorian chant to the opening movement of contemporary composer Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Between these two points is the early music of Palestrina and Byrd; the Baroque glories of Vivaldi and Bach; the 19th-century Romantic masters, from Beethoven to Tchaikovsky; and such 20th-century greats as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. Opera, song, and chamber music are barely represented, but only so much can fit into 151 minutes. Essentially a deluxe sampler of the vast Naxos catalogue, the discs offer a good introduction to some of the most famous and melodic music ever composed, while the book will be very useful to newcomers to the potentially confusing world of classical music. --Gary S. DalkinAlbum Description
A-Z of Classical Music is a remarkable 562-page, illustrated bok, detailing the lives of all the great composers as well as many less known, but equally fascinating, musical masters. Like the Naxos range of recording itself, A-Z of Classical Music is a rich source of inspiration for anyone either just embarking on a lifetime of musical enjoyment or for whom classical music has long been a way of life. Included within is an extensive glossary of musical terms plus a unique guide to classical music used in acclaimed films. Two-and-a-half hours of the finest music from across the centuries are contained in the accompanying CDs.Customer Reviews:
LETTER PERFECT CLASS(ICAL) ACT!.......2003-01-19
glossary of musical terms and a unique guide to the classical music used in 360 top films.
Great Tracks -- Great Value -- Great Book, Who Can Complain?.......2002-08-30
At this price, how can one complain?.......2001-09-30
Still, any possible weaker performances are of little importance after you get your hands on the fat booklet with over 500 pages. The booklet offers a short intro about the great composers, a glossary of musical terms, a list of works used in films and dozens of illustrations of several composers.
Overall, at this price, this is a must-have pack for any beginner, and might be useful for the occasion "quick check" of the work of many composers. Do not expect many detail, nor references to all the works of some composers; I often got frustrated with the lack of detail in some cases, but in general, the booklet is very effective for a quick reference.
You will need more titles that offer more complete information, and you won't truly learn to love classical music just by reading it, but it is small and compact.
It really puzzles me why Naxos did not include a full index of composers, a serious omission. To find a particular composer you will have to look for it yourself in over 500 pages. Also, the separation of the text is not so good, making the search even a bit slower. The lack of the index is truly annoying and I am sure it will be corrected in future editions.
Even with a few weaker pieces and the lack of the index, at this price, there isn't much to argue about. This is truly a bargain that you should not miss. I would also recommend the A-Z of Opera, which offers a bigger booklet with over 700 pages, focusing on opera works and mentioning several composers that are absent from the A-Z of Classical. That other booklet has a very complete index, and much clearer text layout and separation, that's the way both booklets should have been designed.
The two sets complement each other very well. Highly recommended.

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

A very nice album for SCAdian ears.......2007-04-25
Whether you play in the SCA or just love great historical music, this is one of the better albums I've ever bought--on amazon or anywhere else!
Recording is defective.......2007-04-06
adequate performances but totally inadequate information.......2005-04-27
In short, for those not acquainted with pre-Baroque music, this is NOT a good place to start!!! Seasoned Early Music connoisseurs, on the other hand, may find a perverse pleasure in some atrocious moments, or perhaps take interest in its value as an example of historically informed performance style in the pioneering years - but you have been warned!!
For those interested, here are some alternative recommendations if you are new to this music: firstly, 2 wide-ranging compilations by 2 well-known ensembles -
1. Sinners and Saints - The New London Consort/Philip Pickett (Decca 48559)

Don't Be Affraid.......2003-11-19
This cd was actually the first Medieval and Renaissance album I ever bought. I bought it randomly in 1992 to try and introduce myself to these two era's of Classical music. And it was PERFECT. I have been a loyal fan of Medieval & Renaissance music ever since. I currently own 25 to 30 cd's covering these era now. And this album is still one of my favorites......

And Rampal gave the flute life..........2005-12-14
Jean-Pierre Rampal's flute music is, without doubt, the most brilliantly expressed. It is a technical work of art that only a true master flutist can do. His performance is highly expressed through technical mastery. By using complex musical techniques, he gives the flute a magical breath of life more humanly expressed than supposed. Such techniques he uses to make his flute come alive in one of the highest expressions are extremely fast melodic transitions, rigorous articulation, ironic microphonics, and human emotion.
After hearing this album, I put my faith back into flute music. I don't believe Galway should be considered a master flutist alongside Rampal. Rampal's music is flexibile and expressive, while Galway's music is shrill and repetitive. I hope most people will come to realize Rampal's technical beauty in his music.

The finest horn album ever.......2005-08-11
Over an hour is devoted to the works of Johann Stich (concerti 5, 6, 10, and 11). There are concerti by Franz Joseph Haydn and by Michael Haydn. And by Leopold Mozart. There's a concerto by Telemann. A beautiful sonata for horn and strings by Cherubini. A concerto by Forster. And the piece I consider the masterpiece of the bunch, the Horn Concertino by Carl Weber. Tuckwell is at his best with this work, including the very difficult chords (!) that have to produced by humming one note while playing another.
I highly recommend these two disks.

stronger than an H-bomb.......2006-12-31
1. Where are they now - nothing really to this one, just your average intro song
2. Everyone Alive - The first full song on the album, It's songs like this that should be on the radio.
3. California Songs - Everybody loves this song, its catchy and they make a pretty good point, please no more california songs.
4. Dick Jones - This is the first of the songs that you'll notice sounds nothing like anything theyve done before, but it really grows on you quickly.
5. Money on the Dresser - Another one where the first time you listen to it you just kind of wonder what the hell is going on, but like before it grows on you an its actually one of the more catchier tunes on the album.
6. PJ Soles - In my opinion the greatest cut on this album. anyone thats ever fallen out of love will be able to relate to this one. "if i do, think of you, its only in the darkest place, inside of me."
7. Hows the weather down there? - excellent track to follow PJ Soles, another break up song, but rather than sad and angst filled, this one just kicks you right in the face and doesnt let up.
8. Buffalo Trace - The ten minute long song. I cant really explain this one, you just have to listen to it in all its glory, it shows a new direction for the band and judging by this songs merits Id like to hear more like it.
9. Heaven on the way down - If this song were on another album it would fit in better, its not bad, but the strength and energy in every other track just doesnt seem present here, still a good tune though.
10. Hey Rita - Different, almost sounds like a radio song, only it sounds a little murky. I kinda dig it though, it gives it a more raw edge to it.
11. Heavy Metal Bakesale - You wont like this song at all at first, than out of nowhere its one of your favorites, theres gotta be some kind of sublimal message in it
12. Mellowed - Kind of like PJ Soles, its slower and more introspective, but at the same time, thats kind of what gives it its bite, very good song.
13. Thats what they all say - Like no other song Local H or anyone has ever done, this is one of those songs you either love or hate, i love it.
14. Halcyon Days - This is the third rewrite of this song, and ultimately the best. The lyrics are incredible. The music is perfect, makes you kinda sad that its under 3 minutes long. Incredible end to an incredible album. "afraid of the future but im bored with the past"
All in all, You better just start worshipping Local H now, because when these guys arent around anymore, people are going to look back at their incredible body of work and be blown away. This band is so good, they dont need to play the radio...

Local H all grown up........2006-05-02
Beginning to show a softer side.......2006-01-30
This album is unique- it contains some of my favorite melodic songs, which I have come to seperate a bit from the band's other, louder material. There are quiet songs here which really present more sensitive songwriting, something for which Scott Lucas also has unemphasized talent. This second ability has not been showcased nearly as much as his penchant for kicking rock music's arse straight.
Amongst the softer rock gems on this unique album is the fantastic song "Mellowed" which has in part inspired me to stop drinking altogether. As un-rock-and-roll as that may be, it is a truly fantastic and touching song. "P.J. Soles," "Dick Jones," "Halycon Days," and most notably "Hey, Rita" all bear catchy melodies and help to further the band's musical range and integrity.
The album seems to suffer on only one shortcoming: production. "Hey, Rita" comes to life far more in concert than on the album. "Mellowed" sounded better when it was first recorded for the thick records Oil compliation. the vitality of the song "P.J. Soles" seems to arise most in an acoustic setting. "Heaven on the Way Down" feels like it should be heavier, louder and more raw. This sort of urge to change something about the production persists throughout the album.
There's been talk that the next Local H album may likely contain more soft, or even acoustic material. There is no doubt that it would be a treat if Scott goes in that direction with the band. He certainly has the capability to write outstanding quieter songs. Perhaps Local H has a second musical face beginning to show, equally as capable as the one we fans already know. This album feels like somewhat of a transition for them.
Doesn't even come close to BOUND FOR THE FLOOR.......2005-12-04

Before you decide to say "no thanks" to music written by anonymous composers on the island of Cyprus in the early 15th century, just wait one minute. Forget the historical references and consider these vocal and instrumental works as music that can be loved first for its pure and uplifting sonorities. When you hear the perfect blend of instruments (vielles, lute, slide trumpet) and voices (countertenor, tenor, and mezzo-soprano), you'll find yourself drawn into a very pleasant adventure that musically isn't as far afield as you might expect. Beginning with the occupation of Cyprus by Richard the Lion Hearted in 1198, a procession of Western rulers and visitors brought polyphonic music to the island. A manuscript now residing in Turin, but written in early 15th-century Cyprus, is the source for the pieces performed on this disc. The variety and quality of the music is astonishing--well worth an extended visit. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:

Inspired music.......2005-09-27
Perhaps one of the reasons for this neglect is political - Cyrpus was a Western outpost during the Crusades; hence, the culture of Cyprus has been influenced by outsiders heavily. The nation of Cyprus still is split between Greek and Turkish communities. The island of Cyprus was at one time a Knights Templar possession, given over to the last King of Jerusalem, and became a Francophile kingdom until the fifteenth century. Because of these close connections with France, the rulers often travelled to the European continent, and brought back both an appreciation for and performers of western musical styles that in turn took root and blossomed into local products such as the compositions recorded here.
The codex in Turin consists of full masses, offices of St. Hylarion and St. Anne, plainsong pieces, mass pieces such as glorias, credos, and more. There are motets, vierlais, rondeaux, and over a hundred ballades. Ths music on this disc is a representative sample of both the secular and sacred pieces.
The performers are the Ensemble Pro Ars Nova. According to their website, 'Ensemble Project Ars Nova, known popularly as Ensemble PAN, takes its name and its sense of spirit from Philippe de Vitry's 14th century musical treatise "Ars Nova" (The New Art). Founded at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland, by young American artists Laurie Monahan (mezzo-soprano), Michael Collver (countertenor and corno muto) and Crawford Young (lute), the Ensemble debuted at the Festival Estival in Paris in 1982. At its American debut at the Castle Hill Festival in 1984, Shira Kammen (bowed strings) and John Fleagle (tenor and medieval harp) joined the group.' In addition to these members, they have guest performers Peter Becker (tenor), Karen Clark-Young (mezzosoprano), Randall Cook (vielle), Steven Lundahl (slide trumpet), and Margaret Raines (mezzosoprano). This disc was recorded in 1991, during the Ensemble's residency in the Boston area on a grant.
The clarity, the vibrancy, the depth and beauty in the music and in the performances perfectly match to give a strong, memorable experience.

Stephen Foster Played by a Saxhorn (not saxophone) Quintet.......2004-06-20
Stephen Foster wrote very little purely instrumental music, but his songs fostered (pun unavoidable) innumerable instrumental arrangements. Those heard here are taken (and sometimes re-arranged) from the playbooks of such 19th-century bands as the Manchester, New Hampshire town band, the Boston Brass Band and the brass band of the 26th Regiment of North Carolina, not to forget the U.S. Marine Band. The tunes are arranged into quicksteps, waltzes, marches, schottisches and potpourris. Most of the familiar tunes are here: 'Beautiful Dreamer,' 'I Dream of Jeannie,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' 'Camptown Races,' 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming,' and 'Some Folks Do' as well as plenty of relatively unfamiliar songs. And because these arrangements come from all over some of the tunes appear several times like old friends. Some of my own favorites are 'Some Folks' arranged by W. L. Baccus, 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming' arranged by Bruce Barrie, 'Camptown Quick Step' arranged by Jay Krush, and 'Gentle Annie' from the U.S. Marine Corps Band archives.
As an unabashed fan of the music of Charles Ives, I can't hear these arrangements without wondering which of these tunes Charlie heard (and played) when his own father, a former Civil War bandmaster, led his town band in Danbury, Connecticut.
Recommended for brass band lovers, Stephen Foster fans, and folks who like, say, the sound track to Ken Burns's 'Civil War' PBS documentary.
