This 1965 album is where vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells comes into his own. An early collaboration with Buddy Guy, the two of them sum up the 1960s funk-rock-blues that lay ahead. Hoodoo Man Blues inspired Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, and a host of other musician-fans. Wells and Guy don't shy from creating James Brown-funkified blues, or from putting a rock edge to their blues; but neither do they shy from traditional blues. Their version of "Good Morning Little School Girl" is a proper update--still menacing, with less of a country blues feel. Also not to be missed is the instrumental workout "Chitlin Con Carne." --Robert Gordon
Customer Reviews:
Harmonica mania!.......2007-06-25
Junior Wells is one of the premier harmonica players ever to his the blues circuit, and this definitely shows off his talent. Very nice to have Buddy Guy playing guitar along side Junior. If you like Little Walter and Muddy Waters, Junior Wells fits in right along side of them, having replaced Little Walter in Muddy's band after Walter left. Highly recommended to any blues lover!
Junior Wells (& Buddy Guy): Hoodoo Man Blues.......2007-04-08
I'm pretty horrified by the thought that I almost wrote off the praise of this album as hype. It is not just one of the coolest blues CDs I have ever heard, but one of the coolest albums period. Even if you (like me) prefer the Delta Blues but aren't so hot on Chicago -- and *especially* if you dislike Chicago blues because of the tendency for slow, long, boring guitar solos with too much string bendage -- then you need to check this album out. It's tight, contains not one boring solo from beginning to end, and includes some of the best amplified harmonica I've heard (made even better by Wells' tendency to gasp for air right into the microphone between harp blows, the way Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson does when playing his flute). The bass part on "Yonder Wall" will blow your mind. This album has attitude.
One Of The Best Chicago Blues Albums.......2007-01-23
Both Junior Wells and Buddy Guy Shine on this recording. Junior with his all out raw vocal style and killer blues harp and Buddy Guy with a solid riffing rythym. Not enough can be said about either artist on this recording but Buddy is not the Buddy Guy we all know on this album. This Album shows a whole different side of Buddy. Here he is not the bombastic screamer on a fender stratocaster we all know and love but a strong and steady side man with a real heavy groove. Almost no solo's for Buddy on the whole album but his rythym playing shines through and should be an inspiration to every guitarist proving that even the high and mighty can play rythym when needed. The songs are all solid blues and the liner notes well worth the cost of admission. I love everything about this album. One of my favorite spots is "Chitlins Con Carne" A tune written by Kenny Burrell and I have heard many others play it but none quite like this version.
Nobody out does the Hoodoo Man!.......2007-01-16
Junior Wells is my favorite blues harp player. This album was as good as they come, but so many of his that I have I could say the same about. This album is a must for all-out blues harp fans. I love the Hoodoo Man!
Junior Wells at his best.......2007-01-10
I think this product is a "must have" in anyone's blues collection. Having listened to this type of music for over 40 years, I can say that this CD shows the versatility of Junior Wells and you will never get tired of listening to it.

This Oklahoma City singer and slide guitarist is at the creative apex of traditional blues. He took the roundabout route to get there--fighting in the jungles of Vietnam, officiating at funerals, and working as a trucker, forklift operator, saw miller, firewood salesman, and collection agent until a near-fatal heart attack compelled him to find his calling as a bandleader in 2002. Slim's fourth album since then is even sharper than 2006's critically heralded breakthrough Watermelon Slim & the Workers. It's a devil's playground for his weathered-oak voice and Delta-fueled six-stringing, full of stories of crime ("The Wheel Man"), lust ("Peaches"), and sin ("Jimmy Bell"). For Slim, that's par for the course, but this time he's drafted Chicago blues stalwart Magic Slim for a terse, burnished solo and vocal turns on the title tune and piano great David Maxwell to make three other numbers sparkle and jump. Yet some of the most compelling songs, like the howling a cappella "Jimmy Bell" and the slide 'n' vocal turn "Judge Harsh Blues" are Watermelon Slim alone. And that's enough. His sound and his soul are packed with true, natural grit. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
Super Blues!.......2007-06-08
This shows that Watermelon can do it all. I love the rocking out, fast tempo songs like "Drinking and Driving", but there is also a harmonica and vocal track, and an old-fashioned holler.
I still think that the more Rock'n'Roll style songs are the greatest.
Just great. You've got to hear it!
The Wheel Man, my review from Barcelona.......2007-05-21
I very much like Watermelon Slim since I heard him in his sensational April 2005 album "Watermelon Slim & the Workers" in which he made an authentic demonstration of how to play Chicago blues with complete respect for the ways of the clasic players. It was simply magnificent. Later I listened to "Up close & Personal", another Slim's acoustic jewel (see my review March 24, 2007 ), and now I have just listened to this CD, which serves me to get confirmation that we are in front of an authentic bluesman with eminent command of both acoustic and electric styles. He's one of the most authentic and original Blues music out there. In this record you can find high level typical electric Blues like "I've got news", " I know one" or "Fast Eddie", phenomenal acoustic Blues "Jimmy Bell" or " Sawmill holler", incredible slow Blues like "Newspaper reporter". In short, great blues stuff. I only can find one shortcoming which is the rock song "Drinking & Driving", this prevents me from grant five stars to the CD, but elesewhere the record gets the quality of a number one. My evaluation is 4,5 stars. Another added value is the very great MAGIC SLIM as the lead guitar in some tunes, fantastic. I recommend it strongly
the real deal!.......2007-04-30
Watermelon Slim and his band, The Workers, are truly the real deal. These guys play blues, rock, and shuffles like they were born to do it. Not a bad song on this disc. No slick production, just a great band playing great music. In a music world of increasing wannabees and looks taking precedent over substance, this band is a breath of fresh air. True lovers of the blues will love this disc. I can't play it enough. Be sure to check out his release from last year as well.

Album Description
"Working Man" is Albert Cummings' second release for Blind Pig Records. Produced by Grammy winner Jim Gaines, the album displays a growing focus and maturity both in Albert's stinging, incisive guitar work as well as in his fluently idiomatic songwriting.
Customer Reviews:
No frills blues.......2007-06-26
Saw Albert live at a Blues festival in Mesa, AZ and he carried himself much like his album sounds. No frills, just music without an attitude. He was excellent btw. This album is not "magical" like an SRV record but it does what he intended to do which was just to play some darn good music.
Simply Awesome.......2007-05-15
If you like hard-rocking blues, then Albert Cummings is your man. At times he plays a fiery guitar that's reminiscent of SRV or Joe Bonamassa and at other times he has more of a jazzy sound that reminds me of Robben Ford. The last tune on this disc, Last Dance, is a slow ballad that seems out of place and doesn't work for me, but everything else is solid. Cummings' other recordings, "True to Yourself" and "From the Heart" are also highly recommended.
Albert Cummings CD review.......2007-05-13
Albert Cummings just gets better and better. The writing, performance,
and recording quality are all very good. If you are electric blues-rock
fan, you owe it to yourself to pick up all of his CDs. Plus, catch a live
show sometime if you can. I have never seen anyone play so hard and so
long in live show. Keep it coming, Albert!
One awesome guitar player.......2007-05-11
I had never heard of this guy until I heard 'Working Man Blues' on XM radio. I looked him up and have been hooked on his music ever since. I've read a lot of reviews saying that he's the next SRV. I wouldn't say that he's just another SRV copycat or even plays like him. I would say that there is a SRV influence but that's about as far as it goes. He plays a more refined style than SRV but at the same time, has the classic Texas blues basics. This is a great album but I would not limit myself to just this one. Get all of them. They are all good in their own way. This has a better mix of slow and upbeat tunes and they ALL ROCK. Not one bad song on any of his CDs. Really good no-nonsense lyrics too. This guy is gonna go places once more people hear about him.
Working Man.......2007-04-05
A good record as a whole whit several themes worthy to review, good guitar with blend of Stevie Ray Vaughan and acceptable way of singing . Good modern electric Blues and i think the two songs "Girls to shame" and "Rumors" are very good Blues. I'll continue listening ALBERT CUMMINGS, I like him.

Jimmy Reed-The Essential Boss Man.......2007-02-12
Great, great box set with ALL the hits and ALL THE lesser known classics!
When I'm in the mood to hear Jimmy Reed songs I want them all together so I can "relive" with my buddies those days and the great sounds that we danced to and partied to in our youth! We would ware out the grooves on those Silver and Purple Vee Jay 45's! Terrific liner notes also! A must have!
Greater than Elvis.......2007-01-26
Jimmy Reed was, arguably, greater than Elvis. He was a terrific songwriter, a singer with a laid back delivery, a screeming harmonica, and a cool guitar. Don't be fooled by this nonsense of him being unable to carry a tune, or that he was no master of the guitar or the harmonica. Maybe so. But the seemingly simple arrangements of his songs are really so subtle, inventive and marvelous that Mick Jagger, Brian Jones and Keith Richard listened to his records incessantly, trying to figure out how he did it. And the Grateful Dead and Steve Miller loved him.
This being said, it is worth having all of his CDs.
To start, buy this 3-CD box set (and then Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall and Rockin' with Reed). Don't make the mistake of buying another CD boxed set, Jimmy Reed: The Classic Recordings, on the Tomato label. It has a good compilation, but plays at a very low level and has lousy sound quality. An insult to this great blues master's work.

A Great Compilation of Blues .......2007-03-14
I don't give 5 stars very often, but this CD is deserving of it. From the outset I will say this is a multi-year compilation, drawn from many sources of Mike Bloomfield's catalog. If you a true blue died in the wool Bloomfield fan, you probably have all these tracks.
The CD starts out with 3-4 of Paul Butterfield's songs which featured Mike Bloomfield, the son of a rich Chicago industrial family who abandoned the wealth and dedicated his life to the blues without ever selling out to sell potato chips.
The CD then goes into a single Electric Flag song, which I think gave the band short shrift, but thats life in the compilation business.
It then moves on to 2 Super Session tracks, which will blow you away, especially Albert's Shuffle. For you purists out there, check out the Remastered version of Super Session which has this track without the annoying horns.
Then to the best part of the CD, which is Mikes work with Nick Gravenites and Mike's work at the Fillmore, previously only available in bootleg CD's albeit widely distributed. Carmelita Shuffle, It Takes Time and Don't Think About It Baby are the best tracks in the CD.
So sit back and enjoy the blues, played by one of the great masters of the genre--Mike Bloomfield.
Essential blues.......2004-09-25
You would probably already know that Mike Bloomfield is considered one of the best and most influential white blues guitarist ever lived. Unfortunately, due to several circumstances, and mainly to his character (apparently he was not the kind of person you would get on easily together) and his life style, his musical legacy is spread across several different albums recorded with several different bands and several different solo efforts. Due to the above, even his playing has been wonderful (most of the time) but sometime not so good either. This collection, covering 5 years of his career, includes some of his finest blues recordings, some of which previously unissued gems. If you never heard of him, I believe this is the right point to start with. Hearing him playing the blues at a so young age for sure will make you thinking about what a major star he would probably have been if his life weren't ended so tragically. This is a magnificent collection of great blues that should not be missed by any serious blues fan.
Mikey, We Miss You.......2004-03-21
If you liked Super Session, Electric Flag, or many other smokin' guitar WhiteBoyBlues bands, this CD is essential. B'Field is possibly one of the finest guitars of all time. This particular CD has a lot of incredible tracks, and very few mediocre ones. This one is a must for those of us who love a killer guitar.

Lots of great Bloomers.......2004-03-04
The early demos are not very indicative of what Bloomers did later but I guess I'm glad its here. The other stuff is great if this is the only Bloomfield album your going to buy. Otherwise I would just buy all the REAL albums and forget the "greatest hits" package.
Mike played blues the way our generation heard it........2003-11-30
I recommend this to anyone who was a fan but didn't maintain a Bloomfield/Butterfield/Electric Flag collection. Bloomfield played blues with same attitude that most the young white guys then and shortly afterwards had: more notes, faster tempos, louder, racing ahead of the bar lines, and incorporating whatever other styles/scales struck him as interesting. A lot of us have settled down, and now prefer a older, more laid back style , but Mike's recordings will stand forever as a document of 'where our heads were at' in the 60's.

Buddy Guy's greatest album is also his debut full-length session as a leader. "One Room Country Shack," "Mary Had a Little Lamb" (a Stevie Ray Vaughan favorite), "Sweet Little Angel," and "Worry, Worry" are defining songs, full of high-wire vocal dynamics and guitar work of almost balletic poise. The tone of Guy's 1957 Fender six-string remains the benchmark for nearly every blues player who's since hefted a Stratocaster. This CD is as tasteful and dramatic as Guy's 1990s performances are brash and assaultive. Producer Samuel Charters, the noted blues historian, caught Guy just as he was emerging from the shadow of B.B. King and Muddy Waters, and provided an excellent cast of supporting musicians, including the underrated guitar genius Wayne Bennett, gritty piano virtuoso Otis Spann, and Muddy's redoubtable drummer Fred Below. The results are blues perfection. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
Lord, have mercy in this cotton field!.......2007-07-10
Buddy Guy is one of my favorite all time blues artists, behind only the great Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker, as well my favorite blues guitarist along with Otis Rush. A Man and the Blues is his first studio album, and regarded by many as his best. It might just be his best studio album, but if you are just now getting into Guy, I would start elsewhere. My favorite of his CD's in order are Buddy's Blues (Chess 50th Anniversary Collection) (his best Chess singles), DJ Play My Blues (his best live album), and Slippin' In (Silverstone album with no celebrity guests or pop covers). But I won't argue the fact that A Man and the Blues is essential Buddy Guy as well as essential for any blues collection.
If you are expecting the frenetic Buddy Guy who not a single performer in the business can't match for pure energy and passion, you will not be getting that here. But, if you want a more soulful, controlled-passion Guy, then this is the best representation of that side. I love it when Buddy lets out a long, energetic guitar solo that will absolutely sear the flesh, but he doesn't have to play like that to impassion one`s soul, a fact he proves masterfully with this album. Also on this album is Otis Spann, widely acknowledged as the greatest blues pianist of all time, so naturally he is a great addition. He plays the perfectly understated piano, never stealing any of Buddy's fire, always firmly aware that this is Buddy's album, but when called upon he does his thing perfectly.
The album starts out with a soft number, "A Man and the Blues" (penned by Buddy), with Buddy playing a perfectly gentle guitar. The next song is "I Can't Quit the Blues," one of many jams on the album, and Guy's guitar shines. Next Buddy covers the Barret Strong song "Money (That's What I Want)," probably the catchiest song on the album. I find Guy's version superior to Barret's (although I am a bit biased), certainly more inspired and passionate. It seems more energetic and upbeat. Buddy's vocals on this song blow Barret's out of the water. Buddy has one of the most powerful voices in blues, and this album displays it very well. In addition to that, Guy's guitar on this song is just excellent. The solo in this song is one of my favorite rockin' solos ever, and Guy finds three great melodies on his guitar. Next comes another slow burner, "One Room Country Shack." This is it, that gem of a song you find every now and then, the one that gives you goosebumps as only the blues can. Otis's piano in this song is extremely eerie, making ample use of the flatted fifth interval, and Guy's vocals are equally haunting ("Lord, have mercy in this cotton field"). As other reviewers have already stated, this is what the blues is all about. After that comes "Mary Had a Little Lamb," which is superior to Vaughan's version, "Just Playing My Axe," another jam, "Sweet Little Angel" and "Worry, Worry," two slow B.B. King covers that are very similar to "A Man and the Blues," and "Jam on a Monday Morning," where Otis in particular shines.
So, if you want to hear the Buddy Guy that inspired Clapton, Hendrix, and so many others, look elsewhere, but if you want some great soulful, if soft, Chicago blues like only the masters can deliver, don't hesitate to pick up A Man and the Blues.
Also, if you like Buddy, you should get into Otis Rush.
My Favorite Buddy Guy disc.......2007-02-26
Releases since on Silvertone definitely are a step up in production over this short old LP. BUT as noted by others, THIS is a definite benchmark. If I had to count my most listened to discs over the past 20+ years this one would rate very high. It never gets old, classic in every sense of the word. Definitive Chicago blues sound. A must have by any blues listener.
Straight to your soul.......2006-03-22
I've been listening to Buddy Guy play the blues for thirty years. I've seen him in concert 6-8 times. I think he is the most talented blues guitarist, bar none, that there is. I laughed when I compared his recording of "Five Long Years" with Eric Clapton. This album is one of the first I listened to and is still one of my favorites. "One Room Country Shack" is what the blues are all about. He finds notes on the guitar that aren't there and his plainitve voice singing " why don't you make connection with me, give me some kind of good deal" grabs you by the soul and don't let go. He also does uptempo on "Money" and makes a pop song the blues. If you don't love this album quit listening to the blues, you don't get it.
probably Guy's best solo effort.......2006-01-13
I was shocked to find that Buddy Guy's "A Man and the Blues," only had a handful of reviews. This is an essential recording that should be in any Blues collection. First, the guitar work is powerful. Guy's Fender Strat plays clean, thin and nimble lead work. Second, the vocals are compelling. Buddy Guy's voice was strongest during his early career. Here, his voice is high pitched, clean and full of soul. Third, the song choice is tops. There are no weak songs on "A Man and the Blues." 'One Room Country Shack' could be a definitive statement of what the Blues is all about. Many of the fast blues tunes like 'I Can't Quit The Blues' 'Money' and 'Mary Had A Little Lamb' are three minute parties. The brass brings so much to the danceable feel-good grooves. The disc has a beautiful retelling of the standard 'Sweet Little Angel.' The only drawback to this 1967 recording is the length -it's too short. It all comes down to guitar work, vocals and song choice. For these three reasons, Buddy Guy's first was probably his best solo effort and it should be in your Blues collection.
defines electric blues.......2005-06-28
this album is very very very special. you can feel that magic throughout the album.
having played as a guitarist for many blues stalwarts including muddy waters, this was buddy guy's first outing as a band leader. and what an album it is!
the fretwork is not the screaming blues of say, stevie ray. rather it is the controlled fury, delicate and subtle but always straining at the leash, of a master guitarist who knew how to maximize the potential of the "bell tone" of a fender stratocaster. almost every song on this album is a killer - but "one room country shack" is in its own class - the quintessential blues number which has seldom been surpassed in its genre.
if you like the electric guitar or the blues - get this album!
also check out the other killer albums of buddy - stone crazy (where buddy totally cuts loose with a gibson es-335) and hoodoo man blues (his best collaboration with junior wells).

Album Description
Twelve of Popa Chubby's most inspiried blues and rock excursions culled from live concert performances in France. The 72+ minute program spotlights Popa's scorching guitar prowess and includes fan-favorite Chubby tunes plus inspired covers of Willie Dixon's Back Door Man, the Carter Family's Keep On The Sunny Side and Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. The program on this CD is not the same as the concurrent DVD release of the same title.

excellant,rockin blues........2007-01-17
I just can`t seem to get enuff of this great live cd.Popa chubby is right up there with some of the best blues guitar players out there. Why this guy is not more popular is a mystery to me.I would put him up there with joe bonammasa, and jimmy d lane. This is more rockin blues and you can tell he is hendrix influenced, but who isn`t.Buy this and it will not come out of your player.
popa chubby ass kicker.......2006-05-24
I bought the cd and the dvd to this concert and popa just kicks ass. I have his other live concert on dvd and i believe this one might be a little better but they are both very good. This music is very raw i didnt know very many of the songs but got into them right away i love chubbys voice and his lyrics are one of a kind if you like straight ahead blues rock with a lot of guitar playing you should enjoy this very much. Thanks for reading.
True to form.......2005-07-14
While the songs on this CD are a little more reserved than I've come to expect from Popa, I find the CD to be very good. The one time that I saw him live he played a subdued first set and then proceeded to blow the roof off of the place in his second set. Still, I don't think you can go wrong with a live offering from PC.
Left Me Weak.......2005-06-12
Having seen Poppa Chubby play live and having bought his other live CD, I bought this CD with high-hopes of listening to a hard-driving rock/blues piece of music. Instead, I found it to be an uninspiring, lacking in energy and intensity, and ho-hum live CD. Poppa doesn't seem to be into it and neither does the audience. If you are looking for a gritty, loud, greasy, boisterous, blues/rock CD, this isn't it.
Try again, Poppa. Next time, turn it up and let it rip.

"The Godfather of Memphis Funk.".......2006-04-17
So it says on the back of the album cover. It's no lie; this CD is hot!! Talk about funky! I think Rufus gave James Brown a run for his money some times. Here you get 18 of his funkiest and finest. From the title track which sounds like it will never end, (and why should it?) to classics like "Itch and Scratch" and "Sophisticated Sissy." On some of these that have dance names in the title, they all kind of sound the same. Rufus announces he's back with a new dance for everyone, says what it is and how to do it. Those are "Do The Funky Penguin", "Do The Push and Pull", and "Funky Robot" among others. It's pretty cool; even if you don't know how to do these dances, just do something that makes sense. These songs definitely have such colossal grooves to them. Bass lines and drum riffs are sweet!
The CD has inlay liner notes about Rufus' biographical info and his involovement with Stax and the songs presentes. So check Rufus Thomas out. He was middle-aged when he did all these songs, but that made no difference. He still could make life a dance party and that's what this CD is all about: a dance party!
As he said, "I ain't gettin' older; I'm gettin' better."

Robert's "electric charisma".......2006-08-10
I am the current road drummer for Cleveland Fats, who played with Robert for 20+ years. I had the opportunity to meet Robert at his 90th birthday party. It was a humbling experience for me. The man is truly a legend yet only popular in the blues world. This album displays Robert's "electric charisma" and should be proof enough to anyone that Robert is one of the finest blues players of our time.
Steady Rollin Lockwood.......2004-02-02
Robert Lockwood is on this cd with a few buddys of his. The Three Aces. Fred Below,Dave Myers and Louis Myers.
This cd was Robert's first album as a leader. Robert and the Aces are awesome performers. They are also on a Import Cd BluesLive.
This is not Robert's greatest cd but certainly a great debut album. If you enjoy nice ol blues music you will like this album.Robert is 89 years old and still travels the country.
Great Performance.......1999-12-14
One does not have to be a blues expert to see that there are some fine musicians on this recording that acompany one of the greatest blues guitarist that ever lived, not to mention the most under rated. These guys travelled with and sat in the studio with the greatest blues music ever. This collection shows all of the polish that you would expect from that type of experience. Robert Lockwood shows us on this recording that you do not need large amplifiers to cook. I saw him a few months ago sit on a tall stool with nothing but a twelve string and not another soul in sight and simply hypnotized me and the rest of the audience. He does exactly that on this cd. You will enjoy listening to this if for no other reason but to hear true artistry in the blues.
