Deliverance evokes the sounds of a kinder, gentler era of heavy rock, a time before there was moshing. In those days, if you wanted to end up prone on a crowded coliseum floor and get stomped on, you just drank and smoked until you passed out where you stood. With this record Corrosion of Conformity, one of the most influential and caustic punk bands of the mid-'80s, make a dramatic shift toward groovy, Southern-fried metal á la Lynyrd Skynyrd, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and ZZ Top, and they do it quite convincingly. Fans of their previous releases may not think that's a good thing, but this album might snare a whole new crowd of devotees. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Special Album.......2007-01-29

'Deliverance' by Corrosion of Conformity is, without question, an album that anyone who is even remotely interested in heavy music should own. I have had this album for over a decade, and I am still not tired of it.

It amazes me how unknown and unappreciated this album is. This album is in the same boat as Temple of the Dog, an amazing album that most people will never hear. It really is that good, so go buy it.

this is without a doubt , one of my favorite cds. coc packs a hard punch . and its got so much soul . definatly worth your money , no matter what t he cost

4 out of 5 stars GIVE THIS A CHANCE..........2005-06-29

wow
years ago,c.o.c where "my" band back in their hardcore punk days.when they "sold-out" & went metal,i totally tuned out without even hearing where their sound was going.
boy,did i ever make a mistake....
this is fantastic stuff!as many other reviewers have pointed out, this is along the southern fried black sabbath riff-a-thon.
songs are well written,musicianship solid.
wish i had given this a chance 11 years ago!

5 out of 5 stars EPIC.......2005-05-04

Sure Pepper was in COC when Blind was recorded, but this album marks the beginning of a band and a sound that has no equals.

Most people revere this album as some kind of hallowed gem and they are correct. The first COC album to be dominated by Pepper's songwriting and singing - it showcases a talent in music that few can match. It's like Pepper comes from some super-planet of music - where maybe the only other inhabitant is Tony Iommi or something.

But this album also makes it VERY clear that Mike, Woody, and Reed are monsters in their own right. They collectively create something that oozes virtuosity. Each player is a master of their sound and instrument and it all comes together in some hazy dreamlike brilliance.

This album is required material. After countless spins - my fav song is `Pearls Before Swine'. That rumbling bass line and the amazing blast into the hook is unbelievably good. WOW!

4 out of 5 stars Southern discontent plenty showed.......2005-02-23

Corrosion Of Conformity can speed their sound and go mental as in their beginings or either can slow down the madness and be more judgemental, but always they will stand for their ideological and political tougths "better to live on your feet than die on your knees" they know how to use their freedom of expresion , freedom of speech, freedom of free asociation, they have bveen always very extreme when it comes about the emancipation of ideas regarding the system that involves the goverment institutions, their message is very clear "united we stand" and of course in not that deep issues, they simply love to play good southern rock and metal and enjoy cold beers.

As ussual, sabbath is the constant in the guitar riffs, souther rock in vocals and attitude and all this comes in a political concept that is present in every record since "technocracy" when their direction pointed to hardcore and punk, but when "blind" was released they were more oriented to hard rock and metal style and their southern roots and they obtained critics recognition.

Now , according to recent COC statements they have returned in some percentage to speed and ferocity in their upcoming album "In the arms of God" lets wait to see if they blow our minds away once again

Corrosion of Conformity finally hit on the perfect lineup after a decade of shuffling members and knock out a bone crushing, yet astutely intelligent and passionate album. Wiseblood sounds not unlike its predecessor, Deliverance, with southern rock leanings and crushing Black Sabbathy riffs, but it's more methodical and deliberate and less adrenaline-hyped overload. The band lets the songs stretch out and breathe, allowing the listener to fully soak in the big rock vibe, without having it furiously hammered home. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-10

This is probably one of the best Rock/Metallish albums of the 1990's. Pepper Keenan's vocals are at their best, the guitar work nails both the Sabbathesque riffage and the slower atmospheric stuff, and the music is an all-around immersive experience. From the moderately paced "King of the Rotten," to the slower "Goodbye Windows," to the head-banging "Man or Ash," this album has a great range, but never seems to be reaching or disjointed. If you like hard rock or sabbath style metal, you definitely have to have this album.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Riff Fuelled Metal.......2006-10-14

Corrosion of Conformity established themselves as a metal act after the crossover album "Blind" and the all-out bluesy stoner approach of "Deliverance", both excellent albums in their own right. "Wiseblood" saw COC continuing the riff filled approach that touches on stoner metal. With Pepper Keenan (of metal supergroup Down) behind the lead guitar and vocals, you know the album will deliver to those who want big infectious riffs and catchy melodies, aspects "Wiseblood" takes at ease.

Kicking things off with the frantic riffing of King of the Rotten, the album is launched into gear, and the relatively fast and catchy approach is continued through the opening few tracks, highlighted by crowd favorite Long Whip. Other examples of the adrenaline pumped COC include the aggressive fist-pumping The Door, wielding lyrics of `while you're losing it on the curve / right, there's the door' to add to the confrontational flavour. And also the aptly named Fuel which contains some thundering riffs and even moments of double bass kicks.

"Wiseblood" also portrays COC's bent for moody, melancholic ballads in the sad Goodbye Windows, with lyrics of a disappointed mother telling her son `he should have known better'. And also the chilling Redemption City which demonstrates Keenan's excellent ability to craft a moody ballad, especially in the sumptuous acoustic passage in which he sings `your soul is tired and you want to go home'. These are typical COC ballads, recalling the likes of the flooring Pearls Before Swine from the album "Deliverance".

Overall this is solid riff fuelled metal, and will certainly please fans of the post "Blind" COC, and probably fans of general rock music who enjoy a good melody and riff.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome..........2006-01-04

I listened to "In the Arms of God" and enjoyed it to a rather large extent. It was an awesome CD. I decided to go back to thier earlier CDs to see how well they panned out and Wiseblood is amazing. There are songs that just rock hard and there are songs that just amaze. I have to say one amazingly stand out track is "Redemption City". This is a great rock CD that would suck to miss out on. Go buy it now!!!

3 out of 5 stars A redirection please............2005-09-03

Well, I thought I could read some reviews about this album...must have been mistaken. First of all, let me say that I AM NOT WRITING A REVIEW FOR WISEBLOOD. Many of the other "reviews" say very little about the music. Rather, they seem to bash some other band when trying to promote a song on this album. I don't really care to hear that this band is better than "The Biggest Band In the World" (someonse else's words, not mine-read the other reviews) because they chose a different musical direction (if you haven't read the other mindless reviews, I'm referring to Metallica). True, I am a HUGE Metallica fan (all they're albums; I'm not a "NEW" or "OLD" fan), however, I cannot see that there is any value in reviews that merely seem to bash other bands, including those other than Metallica.

I just wanted to remind everyone that you should be reviewing the album, good or bad, but since there are clips of the songs available, I'm not sure there is even a need for "reviews" since most of them seem to be useless, as with this one for Wiseblood. From the clips, this album seems to kick some tail, so I might just take a chance and check it out someday. Thanks. (Stepping down off the soapbox now.)

5 out of 5 stars REAL music.......2005-04-29

Lets get one thing straight - COC does not sound anything like those losers in Metallica. I have no idea what people are hearing when they compare COC to the Met camp. Put it this way, COC is a class above and beyond. On this album, the tunes are heavy deep southern fried sabbath doom. It a shame that COC is compared to Metallica at all because the sounds are nowhere alike. Comparing the two is ridiculous - and lets me state for the record that COC creates timeless music that somehow seems to be getting better with each album. While Metallica's best days are long past.

Woody delivers a killer performance! Some of the solos are just ridiculous. I cant figure out how that SOUND was achieved. And Mike blows freaking insane grooves over every inch of this record. He is such an amazing bass-player and he never gets the proper respect from the music press.

And finally Pepper. What can you say about this man that people havent heard? The dude is sick man. He just oozes talent and he cements COC as one of the greatest bands there will ever be.

I personally like Deliverance and America's Volume Dealer better but Wiseblood still kicks major ass. Really - this band is without peer. Simply put, if you like Deliverance - you will like this album.

5 out of 5 stars An album way ahead of its time.......2007-03-20

I got the cassette for Christmas from my grandparents in 1987. I remember thinking, "How ironic it is that the most brutally intense hardcore album I own has been given to me by my grandparents." Oh well, it was on my list. I read about it in Thrasher a couple of months before.

Animosity was mind-blowing. Upon the first few listens, it was almost too crazy for my white, suburban 16-year old mind to handle. The guitar feedback, the way-over-the-top drumming, the distorted vocals (that a thousand bands would go on to copy in coming years) ... it was like I had discovered another country. At the time, it was all Whitesnake and Def Leppard on the radio and MTV. Even my collection of Dead Kennedys and Black Flag albums didn't hold a candle to this mayhem. And it was all done with talent to boot! I couldn't believe what I was experiencing.

And what an impression it's left on me. To this day, after I come home from work and my 10-month old starts fussing because he's hungry, the lyrics go running through my head ... "looking for answers laughed hungry child!" I mean, what does it take for a song to leave that kind of impression on you 20 years later???

Obviously I'm an old man, so this album may sound much differently to most of you reading this review. But I listened to it again recently and I've gotta' say -- it's stood the test of time for me. If you're into Mike Patton, Hatebreed, Snapcase, Fear Factory, Pelican, Mastadon, Killswitch Engage ... whatever it may be that led you here ... in my humble opinion, this is where it all began.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-01-08

This is an amazing album. I strongly recommend this for any fan of speed metal. The drummer is amazing -- he adds a lot of detail to the songs which give the songs a lot of heaviness. The songs are extremely memorable and are always a pleasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe it!.......2006-08-01

I've been on a C.O.C. binge lately. I drug out the old cassete tapes and decided to look for them on disc. It's a shame I can only find "animosity" on cd, It's probably their best recording but "Eye For An Eye" is just classic. It's the pre thrash, hardcore punk masterpiece that paved the way for DRI and all those other bands that had such an impact in the early 80's. C.O.C. was just that, dirty. I've sen them in 90's and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Old C.O.C. is something original, If you can get it, get it!

5 out of 5 stars COC at the Eagles Lodge in Denver 1986.......2006-05-04

This is one of the best crossover records! The others being CroMags "Best Wishes" and the Crumbsuckers "Life of Dreams" and S.O.D - Speak English or Die. I can say I was there in 1986 and saw COC at the local Eagles Lodge. No stage. No fights. Just a great pit and the low down creepy crawly mosh. We helped set up the gear on the floor and helped carry gear out to the van when the show was over. That's just what the shows were like back then. Hell we even cleaned up after the show so we could have more shows at the Eagles Lodge. Kids today have no idea what we would do to have shows. Yep I'm old but you can f*%# off hipster AFI, SOAD, Disturbed fan. We'd buy a bands merchendise or just pitch in and give them money so they'd have gas to get to the next town. For me Corrosion of Conformity ~ Animosity is a big part of the soundtrack of my life. Eye for an Eye is also a favorite but what could top the 7" record Six Songs with Mike Singing? Nothing! F*%$ing Nothing!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2005-08-04

Hearing this album ten years ago changed the way I thought about music. I was listening to only punk at the time, and was handed this by a good friend. It opened more doors than I can explain. Crossover, metal, hardcore, there is really no label for this album that fits for me. Animosity is fast, brutal, intelligent, and was way ahead of its time. If you have tried other coc albums and have not been pleased, try this one.....Its one of my top three albums of all time.

1 out of 5 stars Truly awful.......2007-01-15

It's like listening to rock and roll. What happened to the hardcore? What happened to the thrash?

This album is awful. It's a totally different band, basically, from Corrosion of Conformity's Animosity album.

5 out of 5 stars Mind-Numbingly Heavy.....................2006-07-23

I'll get straight to the point......I believe that this is the best album by COC.....EVER!I much prefer the vocals of Carl Agell to Pepper Keenan any day.And the music.....
It's a swift punch to the nutz..
..A glorious example of brutality.

P.S.
If you work out at the gym or wherever, put this on......trust me.

5 out of 5 stars As bad*ss today as it was years ago..........2006-04-16

Busted this one off the shelf, and people, this is a thrash CLASSIC. HUGE production, awesome songs, cool to sing along to, the works. I'm just gonna come clean and admit now that I cherish this band mostly for what they did from this album on-I caught "dance of the dead" on Headbangers ball as a wee teen. Yeah, yeah, "Animosity" is killer, but really, the band should've just changed their name after that record-but what a killer name! Whatever, point is, this has aged remarkably well, and gets the blood flowin, the head bangin', and the craw smilin'-all proof of classic metal status to the ears of this goat. Love it, Pepper is the man. Check out both DOWN albums as well...BAd M"fn A*s!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Oh s***, I 've got sludge metal all over myself!.......2006-04-04

This is without a doubt Corrosion's best CD. Corrosion is split up into 4 eras: early(hardcore/crossover thrash), middle(sludge metal), late(southern rock with a metal edge), and their new CD is reminescant of stoner rock/metal. Their middle era is their best, albeit short(It only lasted 2 CD's).Most people find Karl Agee to be an annoying singer, but I don't mind his voice at all. Pepper Keenan's guitar is nice, thick, and sludgy. These guys are an excellent sludge band. Too bad this and Deliverance are their only sludge offerings.

5 out of 5 stars Mine are the Eyes Of God.......2006-03-12

Corrosion of Conformity returned totally renovated with "Blind" after a past of influential hardcore punk Gods trio, maturity came in the 90s and the southern/sabbath/Skinnyrd influences had to come out along with some key changes and additions in the line up to reach the new sound that they were looking for, in first instance they hired the services of Karl Agell to front vocals and Pepper Keenan supported as the second voice and backing vocals as well of course lead guitar , Corrosion returned then as a quintet after being a trio for many years, the political context however remained in the songs message but more mature than early times, the sound was totally fresh, the path altought were already walked was abbandoned during the 80s and the first years of the 90s therefore it was re-taken by many other bands that followed COC after this release (perhaps this originated the creation of stoner rock as the new wave of Metal) Metallica, Kyuss and many bands cant deny being influenced by the new Corrosions, Blind is a unique piece since the structure of the band for this album didnt last, it was a transitory time "Deliverance" in other hand consolidated and defined booth music and line up but "Blind" have very good stuff and i love it.

After a lengthy break from recording, Corrosion of Conformity have come back strong on this 2005 release. As direct and tight as Wiseblood, this new outing displays the grooves and heaviness apparent with other NOLA bands, exemplified by heavyweights Down and Crowbar. It's hard and heavy yet melodic throughout. C.O.C. remain one of the more overtly political bands on the hard rock scene. Tracks "Dirty Hands, Empty Pockets," and "Never Turns To More" are direct odes to the tarnished American dream and the struggle to remain individual as a human. The album also has a sublime and spiritual feel to it. The combination of these factors, along with the sludgy metal, makes this album feel like the direct descendent of such Black Sabbath classics as Masters of Reality and Sabotage, which is pretty amazing lineage. --Robert Arambel

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite There Yet.......2007-06-10

There are some good riffs on this album, as one would expect from COC. I also enjoyed almost all of Pepper Keenan's vocals, as I usually do. But this disc lacks something that keeps it out of the 4 star range (if I could I'd give it 3 1/2 stars). Perhaps it is that the disc reminds me of mid-90's Metallica a bit too much at times, or that one of the best riffs on the album (from Paranoid) sounds almost the same as the riff from the song Bottom Feeder (on Wiseblood). Perhaps it just sounds too much like stuff I've heard too many times before. Whatever the case, while there are some pretty good southern rockish/metallish songs on the CD, and some good Sabbathesque riffs, I don't think they've gotten back to the heights they reached on Blind, Deliverance, and Wiseblood. I would say that this is a step in the right direction, though.

5 out of 5 stars Rocks!.......2007-05-05

I just listened to two tracks on the CoC myspace site. This album is heavy and totally rocks! They still got it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Return To Form.......2007-01-13

It's good to see COC back in action, making a new album and touring, as they were one of my favourite acts from the 90's. With "In The Arms of God" the band return to form, combining the elements that made them such a great band in the first place - good song writing/melody, and of course lots and lots of bluesy riffs.

After leaving their hardcore/thrash/metal fusion beginnings behind, the band created a series of stunning metal releases. This was not a view held by all however, as the band lost fans, claiming they had `sold out' with the new old-school metal approach. For me, a fan of retro metal, especially in the stoner/doom styling, albums such as "Deliverance" and "Wiseblood" did the trick, and this new release is in a similar vein.

What distinguishes COC from all the other riff-heavy metal bands is their excellent song writing ability, combining great riffs with actual good structures and melodies. After the flowing start of "Stone Breaker" with its spacey intro and relatively straight-forward styling, the band really kick things off with "Paranoid Android", which combines everything I was previously talking about. The song starts with an infectious Pepper Keenan bluesy riff, albeit rather repetitive, but then the band really begin to show their colours, switching things up with numerous middle sections, all with varying riffs, melodies and tempos. Another example of the bands superb song writing comes in my personal favourite, the sprawling "Never Turns To More". This is possibly COC's best song to date, with rich vocal harmonies, infectious riffs and overall stellar musicianship from the whole band. This song also has a very dreamy and ethereal aspect to it, due to many of Keenan's vocal notes being held and delayed with effects (this is also used in other standout track "It Is That Way"), and some of the lead solos having a similar echoed and delayed effect. The band really hit the nail on the head with this song.

To me there are also promising signs of development from the band, experimenting with different sounds and vibes. For example "Rive River Rise" has a very cool middle-eastern/Asian vibe to it, with its use of shakers, congas and driving acoustic guitars. The album's closer, the title track, sounds to me like Keenan was greatly influenced by his time with super group Down, as this song could've easily been on either of their releases. Starting with pummelling riffs and aggressive vocals, the song draws to its massive climax with simply THE riff on the album, the structure reminds me a lot of the epic closer to "NOLA", the fine "Bury In Smoke" which ends with the albums most brutal and engulfing riff. This is not to say the band has lost any of its original sound and style, as this album is packed with killer and classic COC songs (such as "Dirty Hands", "Backslider" and "World on Fire"), all adding up to an album with NO filler, and not a single weak track.

Due to this reason, I am very tempted to say this is COC's best album yet. Whether it's a maturing or simply the benefits of taking time out, whatever it is...this band has hit their peak.

5 out of 5 stars They're Back.......2006-11-26

Leading up to the release of "In the Arms of God," Pepper Keenan stated several times that he and his bandmates had listened to their old-school hardcore and metal albums again. This led to some speculation that this album would perhaps be a return to one of their previous incarnations; either the hardcore punk of their 80's releases or the thrash/alterna-metal of "Blind." But while there are a few almost thrash moments present, most notably in the album-ending title track, the fans expecting a return to either of those two sounds were pretty much disappointed. Thankfully, they fixed alot of the problems of "America's Volume Dealer," leaving "In the Arms of God" to sound most similar to "Wiseblood," yet calling this "Wiseblood II" would be an insult to the sound that COC have achieved on this album.

John Custer's production has moved the guitars farther back in the mix, giving Corrosion of Conformity a chance to focus on two aspects of their sound that had previously been underutilized; those being Keenan's vocals and the drums. Stanton Moore does a fine job filling in, and although I first hated his jazzy style of playing, I now think that his impressive technical drumwork is one of the highlights of songs such as the title track and "Paranoid Opioid." Keenan always had a cool way of singing (I wish he was giving more vocal duties in Down) and now he adds more variation than just his southern croon that he had mainly used before this. He spits out the words like venom on "Paranoid Opioid," adapts a more "macho" style on "Stonebreaker," and goes for a more laid-back approach on "Rise River Rise." Don't get me wrong though, the riffs are still there, and they're still awesome, they just aren't as crushing as they were on older cuts like "Broken Man."

As for the songs themselves, I think that "In The Arms of God" has the best 1-2-3-4-5-6 punch out of nearly any album I've heard. "Stonebreaker" kicks it off with an organ and a surprisingly melodic solo before the almighty riffing takes over. Keenan shines on both vocals and guitar, while the chorus is impossible not to sing (yell) along to. Next up is "Paranoid Opioid," a song where COC inculde a jam section reminiscent of Black Sabbath, one of the band's biggest influences. Not to be outdone, they show how much Black Label Society has affected them on the following song, "It Is That Way"; Keenan's howl at the beginning of the song is taken right from Wylde's textbook. While BLS hasn't done anything innovative in several years, it would be folly to deny their strong influence on this type of metal (Biker metal? Stoner metal? Your guess is as good as mine). Even so, this song is a winner. The next song is a two part, "Dirty Hands/Empty Pockets (Already Gone)" the first half being slower before the song speeds up and Keenan spits out awesome lines like "Soon you will see/when you're six feet down like me" and "KILL THAT SONOFABITCH!!" Soon after we are treated to the acoustic based "Rise, River, Rise." Keenan's vocals trade off with an echo-tinged lead guitar to create an eerie melody that is different than anything COC has done before. Following one of the highlights of the album is the best song of this session, "Never Turns To More." The verses are nearly impossible not to sing along with, and Keenan once again delivers a top-notch performance, making this rank right up there along "Heaven's Not Overflowing" as COC's best song. After this, the album gets weaker with the throwaway "Infinite War" and the overlong "Backslider." "World on Fire" starts out okay but fails to take off while "Crown of Thorns" is a useless instrumental. "So Much Left Behind" is pretty good but doesn't measure up to the first six songs. The album finally picks up again with the pounding closer "In The Arms of God." After a short intro which features some great drum work by Stanton along with the rhythm guitar, a near thrash riff come out of nowhere. Then Keenan's vocals enter the fray and it's impossible not to receive an adreniline rush. I want to bust a piece of wood or smash my head through the wall, it is that exhilarating. Out of nowhere the heavy metal mayhem ends and a sole acoustic guitar begins to play. Where did that come from?! But fear not, the distorted guitars come alive again and the album and song end on a high note.

It's nice to see a band that makes a misstep acknowledge their mistake and return to the sound that their fans have come to expect. Yet, once again, this isn't "Deliverence II" or Wiseblood II," the band continues to evolve without screwing over their listeners. I like the fact that the band writes longer songs with several ideas to mix along with their shorter, more concise numbers. Sadly, for COC at least, Pepper Keenan has said he won't play on the new COC album, opting instead to record with former side project, Down. This isn't to say that the next album will suck, but Keenan is such an integral part of their sound, it's difficult to believe that they will be able to top this. But Weatherman, Dean, and company are no slouches either, so we'll see what happens. In the meantime, get "In the Arms of God" and prepare for the forthcoming sonic assault.

5 out of 5 stars GREATNESS!!.......2006-09-04

Don't expect this to be the "run of the mill" release. While it is in fact the great C.O.C, there is definitely more atmosphere to this release. It only took me the first spin to feel whats goin on on this disc. Stanton Moore is a great addition to the band with his style of drumming. The production is stunning. Its nice to hear drums sound like drums again, and I have always been a big fan of the bluesiness the band brings forth while still keepin the almighty metallic riff to slam to.
Mike Dean is really shining on this one in my opinion, thru his groovin basslines, as he shows some blues and jazz influence as well.
As far as Woody and Pepper go.....well, you know its them with their metallic bluesiness, and raw sound.
I have been a C.O.C fan for quite some time now, and while I have enjoyed every release, for the longest time, Deliverance couldnt be beat in my opinion.......I was wrong....BUY THIS CD!!!

Since America's Volume Dealer sounds a lot like alternative metal, the unfamiliar might think they're bandwagon jumpers. But COC were among the first to explore the myriad connections between metal and punk/hardcore when they opened for thrash acts in the heyday of the '80s metal underground. But since likeminded (albeit more commercial) bands like Soundgarden and Faith No More have come and gone, perhaps COC's day has finally come. In fact, America's Volume Dealer is an incredibly high-quality piece of work that exhibits range, musicianship, and confidence. If they occasionally sound a bit like Alice in Chains, remember this: Corrosion of Conformity helped create that sound. --Genevieve Williams

3 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2007-06-10

I think that something happened to COC between Wiseblood (1996) and America's Volume Dealer (2000). I'm not sure what, though. This album isn't terrible. It's still got some good riffs, some good vocals, and generally some good music. Perhaps this just reflects my biased expectations, but to me this album seems too slow, too soft, and too disjointed. There's nothing wrong with being slow and soft, or even disjointed at times. Many people would use those three words for the instrumental interlude bits on "Deliverance," but I actually liked those. On this album, though, there's just way too much of those qualities. There's a big difference between a cool instrumental bit for a minute, and a Load-like 45 minute rock album. I think the album before this (Wiseblood) and after (In the Arms of God) were both better than this one.

4 out of 5 stars COC Rocks!.......2007-05-04

I have always loved this bands sound. It's sounthern rock with a big pile of Sabbath tossed in for good measure. The sound, the texture, the lyrics, the overall energy of their cd's is simply amazing.

While this release may not be everyones favorite, it's still COC full on and thiers nothing wrong with that.

Pepper gets it and so the fans who follow the man and his work!!

5 out of 5 stars COC.....America's Volume Dealer...2000...(Sanctuary).......2007-01-26

I remember when this came out in recent Corrosion of Conformity history. I first saw this at Manifest Discs and Tapes in West Ashley, S.C. Which is a huge awesome record store that carries every album by a band and not just the most recent or popular. Anyway that day in October 2000 I happened to look at new releases and was happy to see COC had a new album out. It happened to be four years since Wiseblood had come out in '96 and I had not heard anything about COC in that time period ('96-'00). I also saw that they were no longer on Columbia/Sony and now on Sanctuary Records. Anyway so I bought this album and at first listen was a little surprised about the direction that they had took. America's Volume Dealer is more polished, less aggressive, slower songs, and sort of a sound of maturity....even though that is odd to say since they have been around since '83! Well I must say that I personally like the direction the band went on here. I gave it five stars, because of course its COC and the album itself. Though my favorite album is Blind (have the original copy of Blind's '91 on Relativity & love it!). Deliverance,Wiseblood, and In The Arms Of God are awesome too. Anyway America's Volume Dealer was the last album to feature drummer Reed Mullin. All songs are really good on here. My favorites are Over Me,Congratulations Song,Diablo Blvd.,Who's Got The Fire, and Zippo. The rest are great as well. Pick it up and add this to your Corrosion of Conformity collection.

5 out of 5 stars Another strong rock slab from COC.......2007-01-26

This record is another example of the straight-up and solid riffs, gruff vocals, and heavy groove of COC. A must-buy for anyone who is a fan of Pepper and the gang.

5 out of 5 stars I must be missing something special . . ........2006-02-19

I've had this album for some time and I really like it. But as I look at the reviews I find that this is one of their lower rated albums. Well, if the rest of their stuff is like this, then C.O.C. must be one of the best rock bands out there.

The vocals are great. There are great guitar riffs and harmonization. This is just a good rock album. Check this one out.

I'll check out some of the other C.O.C. and report to you here.

Album Description

One of the original crossover bands of the mid-80s, Corrosion of Conformity has always been one of those bands that never quite goes away, though they do their very best to attempt doing themselves in. Though I am too lazy to actually look it up, I don't think there have been two albums in a row with the exact same lineup. Either bassist Mike Dean is singing or he's not in the band or he's just playing bass. Or someone named Simon Bob is handling vocals. Or something. So what is it about this Sabbath-influenced hardcore thrash band? Beats me. Technocracy is a competent, aggressive piece of work, featuring some earlier COC works on one short disc, but it's far from exciting. The tempos are punk but the heaviness is metal. The singing is generally weak throughout, lacking the depth or breadth to truly be exciting. I suppose a purist could get into the fact that the heaviness is genuine, but for me I demand more than just by-the-numbers heavy music. Metal Blad. 2002.

5 out of 5 stars c.o.c. '87'.......2005-04-11

FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT INTO C.O.C. BEFORE THIS RELEASE, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. BUT IF YOUR FROM THESE TIMES LIKE I WAS IN '87', OR ARE INTO THE LIKES OF D.R.I, HIRAX, EXCEL, VOIVOD, FINAL CONFLICT, AGNOSTIC FRONT, THIS IS FOR YOU. I ONLY WISH THAT THEY WOULD HAVE RELEASED A WHOLE ALBUM OF THIS VERSION OF C.O.C.

2 out of 5 stars no labels.......2005-03-25

"Animosity was interesting (as is Techncracy) but the best work was by C.O.C.'s sister band "No Labels" which shared musicians (Woody Weatherman and Reed Mullin) with them. No Labels was also the greatest Raleigh punk band. It was very ironic to see C.O.C. rise to stardom while No Labels passed into oblivion."

what a load of steaming poo. no labels was a sloppy generic hardcore band and they sounded exactly like all of the other sloppy generic hardcore bands from the early 80s who were all basically a bunch of uncreative nitwit kids who thought black flag was the second coming of jesus. but as the no core tape proves, coc was ALWAYS superior to no labels. dont let this stuck up elitist fool you

3 out of 5 stars some good moments although..........2004-12-02

I began to be a huge fan of C.O.C after buying "blind" in the early nineties and thus, I was eager to get their previous releases. But while I was stunned by the overall qualities of "Eye for an eye" and "Animosity", I had mixed feelings toward "Technocracy", their last hardcore/crossover release. Although the songs are brutal ones, I think that they rarely match those of the first albums of C.O.C. Was the band lacking inspiration at that time? It maybe probable because they even made a cover (a good one however) of "Intervention" which appears to be the best part of that production... Woody Weatherman (lead guitarist) even declared that this recording was not a memorable period for the band... So, "Technocracy" may not be an absolute crap (At moments, I was able to get enjoyed listening it...) but, don't consider it as 'one of their best'.

5 out of 5 stars Response to "Basically the worst CD I've ever heard".......2004-05-28

You have it backwards, sonny boy. Those of us who got into COC before Blind and Deliverance were fans of a hardcore band who had integrity. Scrubs like you who only heard of them after they were on MTV's Headgiver's Ball were taken in by a bunch of washed up old sell outs. It's a good thing your stupid friend threw away Technocracy, he didn't deserve to own it in the first place. Now go back to your generic nu-metal.

1 out of 5 stars Basically the worst CD I've ever heard........2004-02-24

Back in the day I was a huge Corrosion of Conformity fan. Like many people, I first heard the band during their Deliverance era and soon found myself trying to track down their back-catalog. I found Blind first, and even though Pepper Keenan wasn't on lead vocals, I still found the CD to be sort of enjoyable. However, once I got to Technocracy, I realized that the musically-talented good-songwriting serious-musicianship Corrosion of Conformity I knew only existed from Blind up.

This CD is absolutely horrible. I had a hard time even believing this was COC. It's just talentless garbage noise that sounds worse than the crappy middle-school garage band that plays down your street that'll never make it. I've heard a lot of different metal music in my time, but this CD was by far one of the worst things I've ever listened to. My friend (before I knew him) had the same exact circumstances as me about COC (first heard Deliverance, then wanted their back catalog) and hated this CD so much after he bought it that he threw it out after hearing it just once. He didn't want anyone else to have to suffer hearing how horrible it was. I warn anyone who loves Deliverance/Wiseblood era COC to stay far away from this CD and all those pathetic COC releases that came out before it. This CD isn't even worth a penny, so don't spend your money on it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Album EVER.......2007-01-23

If you don't purchase this album, you are probably making the biggest mistake of your musical experience. Believe me when I tell you that I own a great deal of music and this is by far the best live album that I have ever purchased. From start to finish, there just isn't a DUD anywhere. Buy it!!!!! You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Now this is a live album!.......2004-09-22

This is what live should be. A great band playing a great set in a a great club. No overdubs, not re-do's... nothing. Just pure COC. For fans of the band, a must have. For newcomers, it will make you a COC devotee for sure.

5 out of 5 stars C.O.C. Rocks... Live!.......2003-07-14

If you're a fan of COC or any old school hard rock for that matter, then you need this. Live versions of "Clean My Wounds" and "Albatross" sound just as good, if not better than the originals. And for such songs as "Senor Limpio" and "Wiseblood," the live setting allows for maximum groove and chunk to be added; substantially improving their sound. The production here is a perfect example of less=more as you are allowed to hear every instrument as well as frontman Pepper Keenan's menacing growls without sugar coating. This album shows that, even deep into their career, that COC still tear up the stage on their own terms.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, one of the best live albums ever recorded.......2002-09-03

Who is calling C.O.C. sell outs? Are you kidding me? C.O.C. has more integrity than quite a number of other bands do, don't dare say that C.O.C. is going the way of Metallica. Anyway, now onto "Live Volume". Recorded in Detroit on April 20, 2001, this live album showcases C.O.C. at they're best. Gone is long time drummer Reed Mulin, who is replaced here with Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod and member of Down with Pepper Keenan), and Bower doesn't miss a beat here. C.O.C.'s sludgy riffs and Sabbathy melodies are brought to life live in beautiful form here, especially on "Diablo Blvd.", "Albatross", "13 Angels/7 Days", "Vote With A Bullet", "Zippo", "King of the Rotten", and fan favorite "Clean My Wounds". The "13 Angels/7 Days" medley is the standout track here for me, it is beautifuly pulled off and shows just how great a band these guys are. The only flaws here are that some of the songs aren't paced at the speed that they are on the studio albums, and Pepper's voice gets a bit flat at some points, but other than that, this is a nearly flawless live album. Also recommended is the companion concert DVD which is also called "Live Volume", any C.O.C. fan will dig that as well.

5 out of 5 stars To all the free thinkers and beer drinkers...........2001-08-16

The above quote appears on the inside of the album and describes exactly what this recording was intended to be- a killer live album for the TRUE COC fan. From the opening sludge of "These Shrouded Temples" thru the bluesy "Senor Limpio" and "Who's Got the Fire" to the crushing "Vote With a Bullet" the album is a near perfect representation of the band's career. Oh, did I happen to mention "Albatross" is included? I saw these guys open for Megadeth in 95 and Metallica in 97 and this album might as well have been recorded then. One thing that always bugged me with live recordings was a band's tendency to play most songs faster and sloppier than studio versions, a tendency COC nicely resist. The guitar tones are crisp, clean and punishing, with just the right amount of harmonics and missed notes to make it authentic. The songs from "Volume Dealer" are more in your face here, especially the riffs and tone. Pepper and Woody absolutely jam on the bluesier numbers, Mike Dean is as solid as ever, but I was totally impressed by Jimmy Bower's drumming on all tracks, as he sticks to the original fills and does not overpower but drives the band. I guess my only complaint would be Peppers vocals sounding flat at times, and the sloppy picking on the closing track "Clean My Wounds". To those who think COC softened or sold out with "Dealer", I think this album will have you agreeing with Pepper's quote, "other bands are afraid when they see us on the bill, 'cause they know when we go out there we'll stick them in the dirt." Cheers to the band for one of the best live albums I've bought in a while. And go get "Black Label Society's" live one, too!!!

5 out of 5 stars Corrosion of Conformity Blind 1991 ( Relativity Records).......2007-01-21

I personally love the Corrosion of Conformity on Relativity Records 1991 release best, because it is the original( yes I still have the original) and it brings back fond memories of the not so long ago past, especially when "Dance of the Dead" aired on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. This album featured some brutal music and lyrics...like the song Vote with a Bullet. Man that is some powerful stuff. This awesome masterpiece of an album was overshadowed by Metallica's 1991 self-title album (like many other albums by bands released at this time) and the introduction of alternative rock...aka grunge with Nirvana,Pearl Jam and company. Here is a memory for you... this album came out almost exactly a year before original Mortal Kombat which was released in October 1992. Anyway this a great album from the early 90's and is still awesome today. Buy this original version on Relativity records or the re-mastered copy from 1995 Sony. Its well worth it...Oh Karl Agel on vocals from Blind sounds similar to Mastodon's Brent Hinds on the new album Blood Mountain. Check out Corrosion of Conformity's Blind (1991) and Mastodon's Blood Mountain (2006) it is sure to please the metal in you!!!
