5 out of 5 stars Great Mann CD.......2006-06-30

ANGEL STATION is a great CD by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Some critics claim that when Mann formed his Earth Band, he went in over his head, but that is mistaken, because, unlike his work with the Manfreds, his 70s/80s albums are actually the work of a mature artist fully realizing his talents. Mann's (and singer Chris Thompson's) belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes ANGEL STATION an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars One good effort.......2004-03-03

This remaster looks to not have the naked bat-woman's breasts covered up as in original American releases. The new Manfred Mann lineup doesn't skip a beat with this effort. As usual Mann uses a collection of top-notch songs re-worked as only the master-arranger can delivering a dark, mysterius effort.

5 out of 5 stars Angel Station.......2001-11-27

I think this album is at least the equal of "Roaring Silence." The songs are memorable and infectious - they stay in your head for hours. While this is an Earth Band trait, it's also the hallmark of a "good" song. I'm not a fanatic about my music - I just know what I like, and this album is certainly on that list.

5 out of 5 stars IN DEEP SPACE.......2000-05-12

This is a classic! For all you intelligent rock fans, this album is a must-have! I first listened to it from a friend's vinyl copy 19 years ago and it has never failed to amaze me all these years! If there's an album that comes close if not equal the great works of The Alan Parsons Projects' "Tales of Mystery & Imagination" or Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon," this enigmatic and hypnotic album is it! If the melodies and tunes take you to the heavens and the far reaches of space, stay calm. Angel Station will bring you back to earth. Thank you, Manfred Mann's Earth Band!

5 out of 5 stars Way Ahead Of Its Time!.......2000-05-10

I first heard this album 19 years ago from a friend who lent me his vinyl copy. If there's a group that comes close to the progressive rock works of the Alan Parsons Project's "Tales of Mystery & Imagination" or Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon," then Manfred Mann's "Angel Station" is it! No less, a classic and masterpiece in its own right! A definite must-have for any self-respecting and intelligent rock fan. If the melodies and tunes take you to the heavens and the far reaches of space, stay cool. "Angel Station" is there to bring you back to earth.

2 out of 5 stars The Earth Band's Greatest hits live.......2000-09-30

Recorded live while on tour in Budapest in the spring of 1993 with Manfred (keyboards and synths), John Lingwood (drums), Pat Waller (lead guitar), Pat King (bass) and Chris Thompson (guitar and vocals). The Earth Band at this point has nothing in common with the original line-up except Manfred himself. The arrangements are simplified and the performance executed with professional anonynimity. There is no passion here, just what sounds like an energetic '80s cover band performing covers of the covers originally covered by the Earth Band(!!). There is not a single original composition here, attesting Manfred's preference at choosing compositions rather than composing his own, a chronic blessing and curse throughout the Earth Band's (and even earlier) career. This CD is best left to completionists (like me) who have to own everything the Earth Band ever recorded, good or bad. Chris Thompson's vocals, as they always are, are beautiful, but even here he sounds almost as cliche as the choice of songs (Demolition Man by Sting, Redemption Song by Bob Marley, and of course Quinn by Dylan and Blinded by Springsteen). There are no risks. The band performs safely within the bounds of professional pop music. Nothing here even remotely is remeniscent of the signature live capabilities of the band as heard on past live cuts such as Waiter Ther's A Yawn... or As Above So Below. Even Davy's On The Road and Spirits In The Night suffer from the generic stamp of simplification and pop homogenization.

5 out of 5 stars How it should be!.......2000-06-19

What a great Cd- perhaps the best composition of Manfred Mann's Songs ever! All of my favourites are encluded. Every Fan of the "Rock" days of Manfred Mann's career should try this one. Still one of the best Live Bands on the world they allways give anything! .

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Outstanding Album.......2007-02-28

This is probably my favorite Manfred Mann album and one I highly recommend. Great tracks, outstanding production, solid execution all contribute to a must have recording!

5 out of 5 stars Somethere in Rock and Ethnomusic.......2006-01-14

This is not the best album by Mandfred Mann, but probably it`s most original and less predictable. Here Earthband used the samples of African ethnic singing and of traditional instruments. And it was years before releasing of the albums by Peter Gabriel and Deep Forest. So Manfred Mann was a kind of Columbus in this area of modern music.
Album is devoted to South Africa`s political problems in the 80s. Now situation there is quite different (and the problems are much more sophisticated and difficult), but epic "The Redemption Song" still impresses me by its mix of ethnic singing, rock energy and Rick Wakemanesque keyboards solo by Manfred Mann. Another hit of album - "Eyes of Nostradamus".
Album contains concept peace of songs and music - "Afrika Suite". Probably you would find something interesting for you in other tracks (read all reviews).
The album got scent of pop music of the 80s - electronic keyboards, loops, but if you like the manner of playing by Manfred Mann - you would like this album - distinctive sound by Manfred Mann`s Earthband is here.

By the way, I`ve got European version of this CD, without "Runner" and "Rebel" (they were included as bonus tracks on remastered CD "Criminal Tango"). Single versions of "Redemption Song" and "Nostradamus" are differ from the album cuts. In single version of "Redemption Song" you would hear Earthband with female lead vocals.

If you like this "somethere in Afrika" version of Earthband - then try next CD "Criminal Tango" (1986) - with polished and dynamic AOR sound.

5 out of 5 stars Manfred Mann's Best Ever Release.......2005-06-01

If you are a Manfred Mann's Earth Band fan, this is the ultimate disc to own. The One Way Records edition is totally different from 90% of the other editions currently out there. The cd was first released in europe & had a different song list on it. The One Way Records edition faithfully recreates the U.S. record release. The songs are in a totally different order & the two best songs on the cd are LEFT OFF the european edition (Runner & Rebel). This gives the One Way Record edition a totally different feel from the get go. Mann's rendition of Police cover 'Demolition Man' starts the cd followed by 'Runner' & 'Rebel'. 'Runner' was his tribute to the 1980 olympics. 'Rebel' is one of Mann's best songs & is only availible on THIS version. As if these three songs aren't enough to melt your mind, he follows them with an Al Stewart cover of 'The Eyes of Nostradamus'! Mann then follows with some of the most stunning work he ever did, an African tribal music medley of songs that spanned the entire B side of the album. These songs give you insight into Manfred Mann's homeland & country & his pride in his African heritige. This is one of the VERY FEW albums out there that you can play straight through with absolutely no let down. I love 'Solar Fire', 'Nightingales & Bombers', 'Roaring Silence' & 'The Good Earth' as much as anybody but 'Somewhere In Afrika' is a whole different game! Prepare to be stunned.

4 out of 5 stars Earth Band gets back on track.......2002-07-26

In my opinion, I felt the Earth Band really started going downhill after Mick Rogers left the band. The band started to become more commercial, making me miss such albums as Solar Fire. Somewhere in Afrika was originally released in Europe in '82, but the American version, released in 1983 on Arista was the one the featured the hit single "Runner" which is not featured on the earlier version. Why I thought the Earth Band was redeeming themselves on this album is the interesting use of African sounds and rhythms to their sound. It's not unlike Paul Simon's Graceland or Peter Gabriel's So, released some four years later (1986). Also, really surprising, is to still hearing Mann using his Mini Moog on this album, unheard of by everyone else in '82. Given that Manfred Mann was born in South Africa (but residing in England, for obvious reasons), this album is more or less focusing the problems of his country of birth, in this case Apartheid and the injustices inflicted on the blacks by the ruling Apartheid class. I am really certain this album did not endear too well to the government at the time, but I hadn't heard anything about it either, so I'm just speculating. There's a few cover songs here including Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Al Stewart's "Nostradamus" (called "Eyes of Nostradamus" on this album). Other highlights here include "Third World Service", the title track, "Tribal Statistics", and "Africa Suite". It was becoming normal to hear pop mixed with African sounds by the mid 1980s, with albums like Graceland or So, but I think Somewhere in Afrika is one of the more interesting pop/African music albums of the 1980s I have heard.

I mainly bought this cd for the song "Runner",one of my all time favorite songs.Runner is NOT on the reissued cd from Germany!!!I should have looked closer before ordering. It was on the album(which i still own)so i assumed it was automatically on the cd...

5 out of 5 stars A great blend of acoustic guitar with ambient synth textures.......2000-03-18

Judging APPASSIONATO by its cover will prove a big mistake. What appears to be an acoustic guitar album with possible flamenco stylings is actually much much more! Using electronic keyboards to layer synth textures and rhythms underneath his delicate and passionate guitar-playing, Peter Xifaras has fashioned an album that gracefully straddles the line between acoustic instrumental music and melodic ambient music. The results are outstanding! The guitar never seems to truly dominate this CD, which is to its credit. Songs shape shift as the synthesizers weave their spells, carrying each cut into distinctly unique territory.

The overall vibe of APPASSIONATO is relaxed but this is not just another "music to relax by" release (not meant as a criticism, even if it was). The melodic sensibility is challenging while staying comepletely accessible. The songs are warm, friendly, yet never saccharine. Peter's guitar playing is accomplished yet never showy.

Production and engineering is first-rate. All in all, APPASSIONATO is a showcase not just for Peter's playing but also his solitary vision of incorporating electronics in a way to flesh out the sound of his acoustic guitar and bridge the sometimes insurmountable gap between the disparate worlds of electronic ambient music and acoustic instrumental. The album is romantic, lush, and a joy to listen to (something I have done many times). It's a first rate debut from this artist, who you should keep your eye on for more great things in the future, I'd wager.

5 out of 5 stars Great stress-buster!.......1999-11-24

I have listened to this CD over and over since my husband bought it! I love classical guitar, and Peter Xifaras is a master. The variations on Greensleeves I had thought would be overkill, but each one has such a different "flavor" that it isn't like listening to the same song. I highly recommend this CD (and have bought both copies that were at a local bookstore as gifts!)

I had this album in vinyl when it first came out. a note was attached to this about how the nightingale bombers where
accually flying over at the time of the recording. if you listen
carefully you can hear thier roar in the middle of the album.
no doubt; a well planned fate or just plane luck. witch ever/

This is one excellent batch of tunes! Bruce Springsteen is great, Manfred & the Band make him greater with their intense version of ' Spirits In The Night '. No part of the whole "Nightingales & Bombers" experiment is flawed. It even makes me feel sorry for the heavy-set,aka... "Fat Nellie".

Pink Floyd used on "The Wall", very well I might add, the same 1940's recording which gives this collection its name. Remember the lirics on the first song on side two of "The Wall", ' Look Mommy, there's no plane up in the sky '? Compare the back-ground sounds of that song with the end of the great title cut of "Nightingales & Bombers". Might surprise ye.

      5 out of 5 stars Messin'...and doing it well!.......2003-01-13

This album was released in 1973, under the original title "Get Your Rocks Off". It is definitive Earth Band, and serves as a marvelous prelude to the later "Nightingales and Bombers". From the Earth Day anthem, Messin', to the funky closer, Mardi Gras Day, the musical genius of Manfred, Mick, Colin and Chris shines through. Manfred's conversation with Buddah will rock you and the two instrumentals, Cloudy Eyes and Sadjoy, will make you smile, and cry at the same time. The cover of Dylan's Get Your Rocks Off is, by far, the best version I have ever heard. The only objection to this re-release, is the substitution of a song called Black and Blue for one of the better little numbers on the original album, called Pretty Good. While B&B is a solid bluesy tune, it doesn't stack up to Pretty Good, and is not nearly as good a fit with the rest of the album's songs.

      4 out of 5 stars From Mann's Heavy Period.......2001-08-26

Rock'n'roll adaptogen Manfred Mann parlayed an ability to roll with the musical punches into a 25+ year career as a reliable second-tier 'name' act: starting out as a English Freakbeat combo with bluesy, then bubblegum, leanings; segueing into a half-hearted jazz sound with Chapter Three; hopping on the prog bandwagon with the formation of the Earth Band; and, finally, carving out an small radio niche with the well-crafted, slightly-sterile pop that comprised their late 70s-and-beyond output, nearly all of it punctuated by their trademark classic-rock covers of first Dylan and, later, Springsteen tunes. While this kind of resume doesn't read too encouragingly, those 'prog era' albums - mainly 'Glorified Magnified', 'Messin', and 'Solar Fire' - sounded a lot better than you'd expect them to, and 'Messin' might constitute the Earth Band's finest 40 minutes. The album's standout cuts are its first two, the (long) title track's sonorous hippie dirge for a dying Earth which leads to an extended instrumental section showcasing Mann's heavy, shuddering organ (ahem) and the spirited wailing of axeman/vocalist Mick Rogers. Even better (and nearly as long) is 'Buddah', which, like the opener, begins twee but morphs halfway thru into a frenetic synth-driven jam that sounds engineered for an accompanying strobe-light freakout. Mind you, MESSIN's not gonna make anyone's Desert Island list - apropos for a band generally known as a surprisingly good opening act and a disappointing headliner. But MESSIN' rides past the finish line in full stride, maybe because it's happily riding the coat-tails of that early-70s aesthetic of rock-solid heaviosity that seems to inform so many albums of the period. (By the way, this set's Dylan cover is 'Get Your Rocks Off', done with their usual aplomb.)

5 out of 5 stars Definately his best.......1999-10-14

Forget the Doo-wah-diddies, this is what you should listen to when you want to know Manfred Mann's music: Energizing, soulful, jazzy, exciting, rock 'n' blues. Solar Fire and The Roaring Silence are also good, but this one beats them by far.

      Album Description

"Sensitive Groove",the latest CD from San Diego singer-songwriter Carlos Olmeda, is a collection of folk-rock tunes full of pretty music with a pungent bite. Olmeda's blend of folk simplicity and pop ambition give his songs both a bright surface and an arresting depth.

His mix of traditional American forms of music with Afro-Latin influences contributes to a style of writing and singing that sets Olmeda apart from his contemporaries.

      5 out of 5 stars It's fantastic ! It's all I've listened to since I got it........1999-10-19

I first heard Carlos and Noel play at Claire de Lune in North Park back in Febraury, 1999. I thought they were terrific and I went to hear them play almost every Friday. I haven't listened to anything else since buying their CD last August. I don't even know what the latest songs are because I haven't turned on the radio in months. Maybe that's a little overkill, but the songs touch every emotion. They make me happy, they help me relax, they get me excited, and they make me think about life...all at once! They're also fun to sing along to. I highly recommend this CD to anyone and everyone. Many of my friends really enjoy it too. I can't wait until his next one!
