As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-12

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03

Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.

3 out of 5 stars Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Aweinspiring!.......2003-10-06

First of all, you get mixed feelings when you press play on your cdplayer... What is this going to sound like? How are the poems processed with music? etc... The truth is, that no matter how you expect it to be, it is better than that.
From the first song in the album to the last, one just needs to close his/her eyes and will be transported in a blink of an Eye (so to speak) in Middle-Earth. The composition of the songs, though more classical than folk as a fellow reviewer wrote, is just fantastic.Along with the performances of the barytones and sopranos in the songs just sends chills up and down your spine. Melancholy, happiness, hope and desparation are more than obvious in the songs. I could not help a tear in the Lament For Boromir, or in the Fall of Gil-Galad. And the oh so ELVISH performance in Elven Hymn to Elbereth Gilthoniel... One just needs to say one word. Awesome...

4 out of 5 stars Not "Evening", But Wonderful Nonetheless.......2003-07-06

On first listen, I felt I had bought the CD for the two Chamber Choir tracks alone (Lament for Theoden and Mounds of Mundburg) - granted, it was well worth the purchase! These two choir pieces are absolutely glorious - beautiful arrangement, beautiful performance. However, upon closer examination, I found other diamonds among the other few roughs. "Gandalf's Song of Lorien" is far better in its second half, when Gandalf is joined by Galadriel - glorious! (As always, the Ensemble does Hobbits and Elves best) "Lament of the Rohirrim" is lovely, yet a bit too slow to sing along with. "Lament for Boromir", though it began with a rather odd sounding introduction, put me off at first ("this is supposed to be a lament!" I moaned) However, upon a more full listen, I realized the beauty of the piece - the harsh, pounding tones actually fit the warriors lament, especially in contrast to their beautiful, quiet moments a few stanzas later. Lovely. And I have no idea how I kept passing up "The Fall of Gil-Galad"! Good heavens - it's gorgeous! Not to be missed!
In short, while I still prefer "An Evening in Rivendell", this CD has charmed its way into my heart as well. Be sure to give it a listen or two before you cast judgement - the songs do, in fact, grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling Music From Middle-earth.......2002-12-26

A Night in Rivendell
With The Tolkien Ensemble
Caspar Reiff & Peter Hall (Composers)

This is The Tolkien Ensemble's second release in their series of settings of poems and songs from The Lord of the Rings. For this recording composers Reiff & Hall have chosen texts that overall are more reflective than those featured on their first release: six of the twelve tracks are settings of laments and other songs remembering the dead, and the mirthful hobbit-songs that provided a contrast to the heavier material on their first release are notably absent. The music is closely aligned in sentiment to the texts chosen, and therefore this recording presents the listener with a more introspective and moodier experience than does their first release (An Evening in Rivendell, see my review).

The settings feature a variety of instrumentation. Bass Ulrik Cold's majestically sung Gandalf is accompanied by bassoon, double-bass, and wordless male voices on the opening "A Rhyme of Lore", invoking the mystery and sadness that pervades the album. The beautiful "Gandalf's Song of Lórien" that follows seamlessly continues the mood adding guitar, string quartet, and wordless soprano solo. Povl Dissing's sibilant, tortured Gollum is simply accompanied by guitar alone, giving him plenty of space in which to stretch into character. Other especially notable tracks: the haunting and beautiful "The Fall of Gil-Galad" (Peter Hall sings and plays penny-whistle accompanied by guitar, accordion, and double-bass); two songs of the Rohirrim, remarkably performed by The Chamber Choir Hymnia; the "Elven Hymn to Elbereth" sung unaccompanied by Signe Asmussen.

As with "Evening", the settings vary in how closely they present the listener to the story. Listening to "Frodo's Lament for Gandalf" and "Gollum's Song/Riddle" one may easily imagine one hears the characters themselves singing, whereas with the "Lament for Boromir" with piano accompaniment or the choral pieces (which sound very much like post-romantic motets), the music itself takes pride of place and the experience of Middle-earth (though not necessarily the music) is less immediate.

The recording is excellent, the engineers varying microphone placement and a judicious use of reverb to suit the size of the ensemble and the character of the music on each track. The accompanying booklet features the lyrics of each song with an excerpt indicating its context within the book, beautiful line-drawings by the Queen of Denmark (!), and photographs of the musicians.

Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great writing, Great musicianship, Great atmosphere........2002-07-17

As the main composer of these two CD's devoted to Tolkiens' world, Caspar Reiff understands and loves that world so completely, that he and his musical mates have forged a convincing and emotionally authentic musical experience. This music like all the best stuff takes it's time unravelling it's sonic mysteries, but it's absolutely worth the effort. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Appropriately Dark.......2002-01-28

It's quite obvious why they call this "A Night in Rivendell." It is indeed quite darker than its predecessor, but is enjoyable nonetheless.
Now, I'll admit, I haven't gotten to most of the scenes where these songs are in the book yet, but from just the lyrics, the darkness seems appropriate. The addition of the full chorus is effective, and highly enjoyable. I especially liked Gollum's Song/Riddle (masterful!!!), Lament for Boromir (both voices are excellent), Song of the Mounds of Mundburg (the chorus is amazing!), and the Elven Hymn to Elbereth Gilthoniel. The voices are still great, as is the music. A few of the moods may not be entirely appropriate, but they're still effective. I got over it, really! I was too busy enjoying the melodies and voices!

2 out of 5 stars Suffers terribly from poor production quality........2004-08-07

Robert "Bilbo" Walker has real raw talent but it is hidden by the rotten sound quality of this CD. It is actually painful to my ears to listen to his music at moderate volume level and more than once I've wanted to sling this CD out the window in disgust while driving but I hate to part with the almost $20.00 I paid for it. Unless you are desperate, save your money.

3 out of 5 stars Bilbo [IMPORT] CD Review.......2001-05-29

I am a big Tolkien fan and I like to buy anything that is based on his books. So I found this CD and it was alright but was not the best one that I have bought our heard. It does have a few good songs. Example is track 3 which is about the Dwarfs song of returning to their home. The music is not always what I feel would best fit the mood of the book. I would say that this is not as good as A Night In Rivendall, but still good enough to buy and listen to.
