As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description
An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.Customer Reviews:

My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

It's nigh on impossible to review a young, indie rock band anymore without referencing their predecessors, their colleagues who have created the anxiety of influence. Here, David Monks' voice, combined with Joshua Hook's compressed-spray on guitar, certainly conjure early Strokes, but then comparisons just fall short. Tokyo Police Club's command of multiple tempos and rhythmic palettes sets up spacey atmospheres to tumble through, with a hefty blast at their beck and call. There's a languid undertow here, Monks pulling you in with a slow, warm-water voice only to let his pals bludgeon you with just-so rhythms that, even in flight, last a sharp, fast two minutes on average. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

best unsigned band in america right now.......2006-10-17
But far more importantly, NEVER pass up the chance to see these guys play live. It's an experience you won't ever forget. Five guys beating the hell out of a myriad of instruments (some obviously homemade concoctions), leaping around as they switch and trade instruments and all the while keeping absolutely impeccable rhythm and melody. Tight, tight band that's so much fun to watch you feel like you're up on the stage with them. They give it all they've got at every show and they've got a hell of a lot to give. You will be amazed.

..........2006-06-02
However, a month after I bought the album I went down to the MacRock music "festival" in Harrisonburg, VA. I went specifically (from Central PA) to see Pattern Is Movement, but was also pumped that Man Man was on the bill. So, PiM had a good set (too short, maybe 25 minutes in length) and several bands later was Man Man. Now, MacRock is set up so that it is actually held in various venues in Harrisonburg, be it a bar, club, or JMU (the college, which is the worst campus I have ever been on-- avoid at all cost whenever possible!). So the show did not FEEL like a festival show.
Man Man gets on and totally blows me away. I have seen some insane shows in my day (16 Horsepower, Sufjan Stevens) but this was awe-inspiring. (Now when people ask me what the best show I ever saw was I have to list three.) They keyboard player/lead singer/visionary was set up just left of center, with his keyboard facing the right side of stage. The drummer was set up upfront, drums facing the left side of the stage, drums practically touching the keyboard. Then in a semi-circle behind/around those two were four guys who served as multi-insrumentalists/back-up singers.
They played as if they were beating off the grips of Hell, frantic and impassioned. At various points during the show someone would run around, grab one of the many props cluttering the stage, and use it to make some kind of noise-- not in front of a mic or anything (so when you go to a show, get up front!!) but just so that whoever cared to hear and could would marvel at it. The one that sticks in my mind is when the keyboard player jumped up mid-song and grabbed a popgun off of someone's music stand and shot it off several times before running back to the keyboard.
And what took it out of "awe, that's cute and clever" area and into "****ing amazing!" is how ridiculously in-sync with each other they were. I hesitate to call it "tight" because this style of music is not really supposed to be "tight", per se. But everything was as it was supposed to be-- so I suppose "tight" might be a close enough description.
It was one of those rare sets which seemed to last both forever and an instant, all at the same time. If I had to guess, I would say it lasted 45 minutes-- which was the scheduled allotment of time. You know that natural high you get after you see a really great show? That high lingered with me about a week after I saw the set... and even now, if I think back to it, it gets recreated. It was special.
And appereantly not isolated, as every report I read of their live shows echoes the things I just said. So if you get a chance to go see them live, DO SO. I can not stress it enough. SEE THEM LIVE.
Ever since then I can't listen to this cd seperate from what I expereinced at the show. The album is flawless, despite what I may have said in my first paragraph. Helpful to a potential buyer? Probably not. But it is what I have experienced, and I can't depart from that.

Although not a prolific writer, the original songs which peppered his albums became cult items to be picked up and recorded by other artists.
Somebody at Marmalade Records in the UK must have liked him because Blossom Toes recorded the quirky Just Above My Hobby Horse's Head and Julie Driscoll covered Indian Rope Man. Bob Marley later adapted the same song as African Herbsman. The Jefferson Airplane covered High Flying Bird from this album, although written by Billy Edd Wheeler.
Mixed Bag was his third album but the first for Verve Folkways and serves as a good introduction to his work. It contains the single I Can't Make It Anymore (written by Gordon Lightfoot) and his own Handsome Johnny. He transforms Jesse Fuller's San Francisco Bay Blues by slowing it down and performing it as a jazz rather than blues standard. The lengthy centre-piece Follow has a stately dignity and was later used in the films The War and A Walk On The Moon, and there are also passionate and timeless renditions of Eleanor Rigby and Just Like A Woman performed in his own style

The Finest Acoustic Guitarist in the World.......2004-07-01
I have been a fan ever since. Havens reminds me of another personal hero, Nina Simone, in that he deconstructs a song -- be it a standard, an original composition, or an obscure gem -- and reconstructs it in a way that is breathtaking and intoxicating. He doesn't just take his listeners through a song, but takes them into it, to explore its heart and soul and real meaning. He pours every ounce of his being into each performance, and the emotional effect is staggering.
His uncanny sense of lyrical phrasing, his percussive approach to strumming, and his technical virtuosity are truly unique. He is arguably the finest acoustic guitarist in the world, and deserves to be heard by anyone with ears.

Funk 101, for sure. We may never totally understand how James Brown took his music from the earlier styles of R&B he assimilated to the feverish development of the harder, more modern sound of records ranging from "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" to "Say It Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud," but here's another chance for us to listen in awe. In addition to long versions of the period's cornerstones, Foundations of Funk offers an alternate take of "Cold Sweat" and live versions of "Licking Stick-Licking Stick" and "Mother Popcorn"--the latter achieving a meltdown that puts the Brown band on the same side of the street as Funhouse-era Stooges. Incidentally, my husband and I were fortunate to have seen Colin Hay in concert at a club in Denver this past year. Colin is an OUTSTANDING performer -- funny, too! I can't wait to see him again!

Though the title could as easily apply to most of Brown's output, Mixed Bag understates the eclecticism of this radical traditionalist's first release in almost three years. For fans of his pyrotechnic picking on his double-necked "guit-steel," there's an album-opening assault on Jerry Reed's "Guitar Man," as well as supercharged romps through "Catfish and Collard Greens" and "Wild Goose Chase." While the musical rewards of such virtuosic displays may wear thin quickly, the balladry of "Running with the Wind" and "Our First Bluebonnet Spring" strikes a richer, deeper vein, while the patented wordplay of "Cagey Bea" (about a Russian spy) and "Little Town Square" attests to Brown's distinctive songwriting. The biggest stretch is the horn-laden Dixieland of "Riverboat Shuffle," before the musicianship of veteran stalwarts such as pianist Hargus "Pig" Robbins and drummer Buddy Harman returns the collection full-circle to classic country. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Forgive the cheesy title, but a star is re-born once again........2007-07-09
In all that mess, the soundtrack was released by Columbia on vinyl record in mono and has since never been out of print and was a best-seller for years. In 1988, Columbia took the musical numbers and the overture directly from the film's stereo soundtrack (As, sadly, stereo soundtrack masters no longer existed.) and released those onto CD. The sound quality was somewhat horrendous, but digital audio was still in its infancy and not much else could be done.
In 2004, for the film's 50th anniversary, Columbia, Legacy, and Sony Music Soundtrax released this incredible new expanded remastered CD reissue of the film's soundtrack. This is the most complete soundtrack you can find and it's definitely worth upgrading from your 1988 CD release.
This CD contains not only all of the songs, including an extended intro to The Man That Got Away which was shortened in the film as well as the complete intro to Gotta Have Me Go With You, but also contains a near complete release of the instrumental score, which includes whole tracks and parts of tracks that were not used in the film, as well as an alternate vocal take of It's A New World, the deleted When My Sugar Walks Down The Street segment from Born In A Trunk, and a static-y complete version of The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial, which was taken from a worn acetate playback disc - the only complete recording in existence.
The soundtrack is taken from a mixing and matching of several elements, such as acetate playback discs, the original Columbia mono soundtrack album masters, and the film's 4-track stereo soundtrack, among others. This means that the soundtrack goes back and forth from being stereo and mono. However, this does not detract from my listening experience any, and frankly, I can't tell much of a difference. One interesting note is that Gotta Have Me Go With You uses both the film's soundtrack and the mono soundtrack album masters to create a faithful listening experience, from the mono instrumental intro to the song itself, which except for a short portion, is taken from the film's 4-channel soundtrack. (The mono portion of the vocal part was used to edit out some plot-related screams that were present in the 1988 release. This method of retaining the aural integrity of Gotta Have Me Go With You was also used when it was included on the Rhino Records compilation Judy Garland In Hollywood: Her Greatest Movie Hits.)
Despite the fact that this soundtrack is taken from several different surviving elements and sadly not from a single set of elements, as Warner Bros. didn't have the foresight to save everything like MGM and Disney did, this is an excellent presentation of this landmark soundtrack. The sound quality for the most part is excellent, and the liner notes are also wonderful. Garland historian John Fricke writes a small essay on the production of the film and an annotated guide to the soundtrack, which gives a synopsis of the plot and also indicates where the tracks from the CD appear in the film. Producer Didier C. Deutsch also writes a small essay on the creation of this CD release, giving notes on the elements and some specific tracks.
Amazon is offering this soundtrack at an excellent price, and I have to say, it's a bargain for a soundtrack of this caliber and sound quality. Any Garland fan or movie soundtrack fan should have this in their collection.
A Star Is Born Soundtrack Review.......2007-01-10
Judy at her peak!.......2006-05-30
The production values of the film were top of the line and it shows on this fine CD. It's a chance to experience Judy's talent on a more intimate basis without the visuals.
A must-have for every serious Garland collector.
a "Star" shines like never before..........2005-04-27
The big bonus for getting this latest edition is for Garland's complete rendition of "The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial" (without the dialogue of James Mason). This has been taken from a rare acetate master, so while the sound quality is not the best, having the number complete without interrupting dialogue is a more than ample compensation. You will notice too that "Lose That Long Face" has been newly mastered from a better stereo source (cutting out the thunder-crashes that were heard on the first CD master, and Garland's singing no longer has those violent analogue fluctuations during the introduction). "Gotta Have Me Go with You" is now presented without the screams and noises, in a new master from the mono soundtrack.
"When My Baby Walks Down the Street", a section cut from the "Born in a Trunk" sequence, has been added as a bonus track. This sparkling-new STAR IS BORN reissue is a great tribute to what is most definitely Judy Garland's greatest hour on film.
Musical perfection of the highest magnitude!!!.......2005-02-25
And her instrument was showcased at its best in the music from her triumphant "A Star is Born".
This expanded version is a bona-fide treasure with the highlight being Garland's earth-shattering "The Man That Got Away," presented with vocals and several instrumental versions. Along with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "The Trolley Song", "The Man That Got Away" is an essential for Garland fans, as well as those that know a good song when they hear it.
The fifteen-minute medley that was featured in the film as the "introduction" of "Vicki" to the public is another outstanding track, featuring "Born in a Trunk", "Suwanee," and "My Melancholy Baby," all exquisitely performed by the legendary talent.
Clocking in at just under eighty minutes, the soundtrack to the classic film is, indeed, in a class by itself, and deserving of repeated listening, maintaining its "freshness" after more than five decades.
