Where did the funk go ?.......2006-10-24

I have gloried in Clyde's days with James Brown - recently I got the Live & Loud concert cd from 1968 in Dallas - he was the "master blaster". Clyde still shows he can get on the beat but the album on a whole was disappointment. I expected him to cut loose at any time but there was just more gags and laughing.

In the past, Maceo, Fred, and Bootsy have released their solo albums and FINALLY!!!, Clyde "the Original Funky Drummer" Stubblefield has his own album, and I am happy to say that he came through with a MASTERPIECE at the right time when Hip-Hop is on life support. To all the Hip-Hoppers who are tired of the same ol'"just-add-water" production that is just simply getting on my last nerve, PLEASE!!!! We are all in debt to Mr. Stubblefield for his massive contributions to modern music. He created the funk beat and raised it as his child, he is the most sampled drummer in the world, and he has his place in the Rock & Roll hall of fame next to James Brown. Produced by Ben Sidran and Leo Sidran, "The Original" is an R&B record you can bump in your car, woo your lover, or cook Cajun to; courtesy of Stubblefield's relentless grooves. The female vocals are smooth as satin, and the horn section skillfully flows between hi-hat and bass drum. Frequent back-and-forth dialogue between the Sidrans and Stubblefield will take you right into the sound booth, looking directly at the man behind the beat. To Mr. Stubblefield, 59 is just a number. "The Original" explores his life from his past days with the "walking band" of Chattanooga Tennessee through the present as a survivor and Madison institution. **** Clyde Stubblefield, The Original (Liquid 8/Nardis); **** Various artists, The Down and Dirty (Liquid 8/Nardis): Clyde Stubblefield's funky beats on vintage James Brown tracks have been sampled by thousands of hip-hop acts, but it has taken more than three decades for the drummer to release a solo album.

The Original , a reference to Stubblefield's title as the "original funky drummer," is worth the wait. In addition to being a confident combination of jazz, mannered hip-hop and old-school funk, these 10 songs are an auspicious debut for Nardis, a Minneapolis jazz label directed by pianist Ben Sidran.

Sidran and his son Leo are the principal producers and arrangers on The Original , building tight, intensely rhythmic grooves around Stubblefield's foundation. The drumming isn't flashy, but each snare drum and bass combination is a perfect one-two punch.

Though the beat is the attraction, the unobtrusive melodies are capable of commanding attention, especially the unison tenor sax and trombone in "Stubbs' Relentless Groove."

That groove is extended on The Down and Dirty , a compilation of Go Jazz tracks released separately by Nardis as a companion to The Original . It includes the title track of Stubblefield's album along with songs featuring trumpeter Clark Terry, vocalist Jon Hendricks and guitarist Phil Upchurch, among others.

Upchurch leads the closing "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothin,' " with Stubblefield on drums, the JB Horns (Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker) and Prince cohorts Rosie Gaines and Michael Bland.

Nardis plans to release similar compilations with each of its 10 scheduled releases this year. The Down and Dirty is a promising start.

Intresting.......2004-03-19

If you have a fair amount of The Beatles music in your collection and love them, then give this one a go. Features recordings made before they were stars and still touring the clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg.

Cry for a Shadow.......2003-12-12

Buy this CD only if you are a very serious Beatles fan and have everything else. The tracks on this CD are mainly sound bytes of people recalling the Beatles' early days in Hamburg -- mostly acquaintances. The music on this CD is mostly the Beatles backing up Tony Sheridan. There is only one track which shows the instrumental ability of the Beatles -- "Cry for a Shadow."
There is no singing by Paul, John, George, or Ringo. In fact, I think that Pete Best is the drummer here. This is not an authorized product by the Beatles, etc, etc., etc. I bought it for $3 in a clearance bin -- only for the instrumental. I don't think I would pay more. Unless you are desperate to collect every single piece of Beatles memorabilia available, give this one a bye.

Good for new fans........2002-01-03

If you have been a U2 fan for a while you probably have already heard just about everything on this CD. It is well done. The narrator is good, but there really isn't any new information on it. If you are a "new" fan you might learn something. A waste of money for any fans who have already read more than a couple bios about the band or have read any books about them.

Maximum U2.......2001-01-07

If you are a Big U2 fan this CD is a must have!! It is full of interviews and a musical bibliography backed by U2 music. This CD gives you insite not only on what each song means but the reasons they where writen for. The CD also goes into depth about the band and problems and triumphs they shared.

This CD is a must have for hard-core U2 fans because it sheds new light on old favorites and provides you with a whole new way of listening to your favorite U2 songs. I have also found that it has turned other U2 songs into favorites due to the meanings reveiled behind them.

Even if you are not a fan of interviews, there is something about the magic of U2 that comes through on this CD that makes it all worth the money.

First off there are a million of these out already. no ned to waste your money, all you need to do is go on the internet and check out one of the 10,000 web sited devoted to Reznor and you will find all the information you need on the band. However, if you are a die hard NIN fan then i guess this album is worth having, but god, look at the price! For an interview disc? if you really need this title wait about a month and download it from napster.
