Over the course of the long, hot summer of 1976, it seemed that Eddie & the Hot Rods were embarking on a one-way trip to superstardom. Considered to be a younger and more exuberant version of gritty, R&B pub-rockers Dr. Feelgood, they were smashing attendance records during a prolonged residency at London's Marquee Club. Yet, to echo their debut single, there was already a good deal of "Writing on the Wall" for the Rods, as their Marquee support band, the Sex Pistols, were about to consign them to the cultural dumper. This debut collection, however, catches the quartet on the crest of an upwardly mobile wave where everything still seemed possible, and their edgy, blazing energy is both tangible and infectious. From "Get Across to You" to "On the Run," Teenage Depression remains a hot-and-sweaty, rough-and-ready pub-rock classic. --Ian Fortnam

4 out of 5 stars As fast and snarling as a hot rod!.......2006-05-20

If you like the Undertones and the Buzzcocks, you'll love this - Blazing rock'n'roll recorded live at the Marquee and in the studio 1976. I played my orginal vinyl LP to death, so it's great to finally have this on CD. The LP had 12 tracks; This has those plus 11 extras. Brits Eddie & The Hotrods- Barrie Masters (vocals), Dave Higgs (guitar), Steve Nicol (drums), Paul Gray (bass) played pre-Punk R&R with a hint of Pub Rock and more than a nod and a wink to '60s garage bands, plus sped-up covers of ? and The Mysterians ("96 Tears"), The Who ("The Kids Are Alright"), Van Morrison/Stones ("Gloria/Satisfaction" - yes, it works!), but the real surprise is a driving version of Bob Seger's "Get Out of Denver". Their original numbers are not too shabby either; "Get Across To You" should/could have been a hit single. 8-page booklet is informative. No frills rock'n'roll!

5 out of 5 stars British Pub Rock, fast and loud!.......2005-06-21

Eddie and the Hot Rods were a pub rock band. But their style of classic old school rock made them popular amongst punk bands such as The Damned. They even toured with each other during the early days of the U.K. punk movement. One of the members of the Hot Rods (teenage bassist Paul Gray) would later join the Damned!

Teenage Depression is a strange disc. Half of the tracks were recorded live. Several cover tracks (live) are covers whilst the others are studio tunes written by Douglas, Gray and Hollis. The music is classic rockabilly, nothing flashy or ground breaking. Rocking sounds that'll keep you bumping and a bopping! This is the band's best disc in my opinion.

Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars First rate early punk rock.......2005-04-26

The Hotrods were an early UK punk group, high energy, but essentially a revved up mid-sixties sound. They were not a revival group, nor were they a full blown "punk" group ala The Damned or The Ramones. It's difficult to explain, but this is a great record, including early 45's, first LP, and several later singles.

I bought the USA version of the LP when it came out in 1976 and still love it. If half way between Dr. Feelgood and The Damned's first LP means anything to you, you'll know why this is such a good record.

If you like punk rock from 1976-1977, this is essential.

5 out of 5 stars best first album ever heard.......2004-11-16

The music that pre-dated but led into the punk era. But unlike punk bands Eddie and the Hotrods were talented and musical. Probably the best album of the era. Shame that like many bands of the era they burnt out for non-musical reasons. A great 70s band.

4 out of 5 stars Not Written By A Top Reviewer...........2003-06-26

This is about music, not "describe this ablum in 1000 words or less". I don't review cds by Tangerine Dream, Duran Duran or Collective Soul, I am not a professional writer and don't try to review albums I know nothing about or have no passion for.
Other reviewers are entitled to their opinion even if they are wrong on this one! (I guess The All Music Guide is off base rating this album 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.)
Alrighty then....this cd does stand up to the test of time extremely well. The Hot Rods are not "kid rock"; they're flat out, pedal to the medal Britsh rock with a heck of alot of roll. Like the liner notes read..."The Hot Rods are not 'new wave', but 'old wave' played faster and louder". They are not "punky" rockers or pop. I would describe their music as a cross between British pub/punk/new wave and the great 70's rockers like J Geils Band & Bob Seger. Imagine J. Geils & Bob Seger crossed with The Who with a very tiny bit of The Clash thrown in...that's the Hot Rods. Some of the standout tracks are a reflection of The Hot Rod's influences; covers of Geil's "Hard Drivin' Man", Seger's "Get Out Of Denver" & The Who's "Kids Are Alright". Killer rock 'n' roll guitar mixed up front and in your face. The remastering job here is excellent. The bonus live tracks demonstrate The Hot Rods were about blood, sweat and tears and not chains, safety pins and spiked hair. Yes this is a bit pricey, but if you can find a used copy snatch it up. You'll be glad you did.

4 out of 5 stars Hard To Categorize.......2001-05-24

Perhaps unfairly lumped in with the punks due to the speed at which they played, Eddie & The Hot Rods were basically a revved up pub rock/R&B outfit that bridged the gap between both genres. This is a slightly different version of the album that was released on vinyl stateside and consequently it loses one star for failing to include their take-no-prisoners version of Bob Seger's "Get Out Of Denver."

    4 out of 5 stars At Last!.......1999-08-22

Well at last - at least one of the early Rods albums have finally made it to CD. I think perhaps you had to have been there to fully enjoy this album. It isn't going to win any new converts to the Hot Rods. But then again, don't let my view color your perceptions too much.

Basically the Rods were a pub band who made it "big." This album was their first - though not necessarily their best. The title track actually charted. Other than that - well there isn't anything bad about this one - just nothing outstanding. If it were rleased as a new Cd today it would no-doubt bomb badly. But it's a little bit of England - a drop of late 60's R & B living through the 70's. There's a very good reason that a number by the Who is on this one.

Personally, I can't imagine NOT owning this one.
