Because it would be un-Prince-like to release a new studio album without kicking up a little controversy first, the Artist Formerly Known As a Cool-Looking Symbol gave away copies of Planet Earth with a British news tabloid weeks before its U.S. release. Among the reasons he shouldn't have: nobody who catches wind of the peerless funk-rock-soul he lays out on these 10 tracks--least of all longtime fans--would think twice about shelling out for it. A big chunk of the appeal is that Prince finds his way back to his guitar here. The title track, a politically right-on-time environmental rant, steers him back toward "Purple Rain" territory, as does "Lion of Judah" ("Guitar," oddly, doesn't--it's more of a straight-up, shout-it-out modern rocker). And the flirty numbers are seriously flammable: "Somewhere Here on Earth" seduces with a crackly jazz vibe, while "Mr. Goodnight" gets friendly with a refined slip of rap. Coolest of all are two tracks at cross purposes-- "Chelsea Rodgers" fuses funk with disco until it's so far off the hook it's in a heap on the floor, and "All the Midnights in the World" paints a picture of artistic maturity through piano and lyrics that lean hard on positivity. Living in the 80's again.......2007-07-13

This is a fabulous album of Journey's greatest hits and cannot figure out why I didn't have this album already, in my collection, because I like Steve's singing so much. When I heard it at the end of the Soprano's it brought back nice memories.

Once Steve Perry joined Journey for the "Infinity" album, the band's course was inevitably reset. They changed direction from being a progressive rock band to an arena rock juggernaut. Perry's main contribution was a strong melodic sense coupled to his more soulful vocals. The hits started almost immediately, as "Lights" and "Wheel In The Sky" became FM Rock Radio staples.

That is what this greatest hits focuses on, the songs that became the standards by which the public remembers the band. If you were interested in the albums BEFORE "Infinity," I suggest "Time 3," which adds material from the years when Neal Schon was still aping his jazz-Rock tenure with Santana and Gregg Rollie was doing standard rock keyboard boogie. Personally, I liked them better when Perry got on board. The sound focused and the songwriting tightened. Songs like "Separate Ways/Worlds Apart" and "Any Way You Want It" could add a jolt of adrenaline to a day of radio. When Jonathan Cain replaced Gregg Rollie on "Escape," Journey took on a romantic bent from Cain's songwriting. "Open Arms" came first, then "Faithfully" (on "Frontiers") solidified it. These were pop radio songs without peer, and they make Journey's "Greatest Hits" an essential document of 70's and 80's radio rock. (The updated version includes the best song from the 90's reunion "Trial by Fire," "When You Love A Woman.")

The other reason you might be looking at this is not because of Steve Perry's voice or Neal Schon's guitar heroics, but because of Tony and Carmella. It was Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that echoed out of the final minutes of "The Sopranos" closing episode. It was funny that Tony passed over Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra for Journey and inspire a million parodies in the process. (Including Hilary Clinton...where the best moment is when she and President Bill Clinton are flipping through songs and Bill says "My money's on Smash Mouth...") Talk about cementing your place in pop culture...who could have asked for better?

This best of offers a pair of soundtrack rarities in "Only The Young" (from "Vision Quest") and "Ask The Lonely" (from "Two of a Kind"). Missing are a few crucial singles like "Suzanne," "Stone In Love" and "Walks Like A Lady." If you really want them, go for the box sets or individual CD's.

This is how you do a greatest hits collection. You put ALL of them on there. Not a mix of half greats, and half "other", then release the rest on another "greatest hits" CD.

Get the Infinity album too........2007-07-07

Unfortunately, it does not include my favorite song tandem Feeling That Way/ Anytime. For that you need to buy The Infinity album. It does include some great songs, a good mix of rockers and ballads. Definitely worth the price to anyone who loves classic rock and roll or was a teen in the late '70s. But do yourself a favor and get the Infinity album too.

Taken literally, this album's title is sure to cause endless arguments. Nothing from Dirty Mind, not a trace of the early anthem "Controversy," no "Erotic City"--no non-LP cuts at all, save some edited single versions--and a cold shoulder to the criminally out-of-print Gold Experience. As a compendium of 17 key A-sides from 1979 to 1992, however, The Very Best of Prince is (ahem) a quick-'n'-dirty review of the days when the Artist was, in the estimation of R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, one of the weirdest musicians in the Top 10. Blessed with both creative cunning and the wish to reach every listener possible, Prince revitalized rock and soul modes from the sex-crazed ("Little Red Corvette") to the cryptically spiritual ("Purple Rain"). Often he blurred lines between attitudes as surely as he did musical ones; the New Testament image of "Thieves in the Temple" became in his hands a complaint about a stolen girlfriend. This CD contains a smattering of all the traditional pieces you would expect to be played during a wedding ceremony which is why I purchased it. I do like it and it will be used at my ceremony. I prefer a little more big orchestral sound but this will do nicely.

I bought this CD for my ballet classes and am really happy with it. It has all of the classics, and each is very true to it's original composition. There are a lot of horns, which are not my favorite, but the strings make it worth every penny!

It should be little surprise that of the three Prince of Egypt CDs, this one, which contains music actually used in the picture, is the best. The disc features songs written by Academy Award winners Stephen Schwartz and Hans Zimmer. It also showcases the always impressive vocal talents of Ofra Haza on several tracks. The disc also crams in a few singles--ranging from the solid Boyz II Men track "I Will Get There" to the average "The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe)" by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to the dismal "Through Heaven's Eyes," by K-Ci & JoJo. But ultimately, Haza steals the show on tracks like "Cry" and the gorgeous "Deliver Us," performed with Eden Riegel. Other standouts include "Playing with the Big Boys," by Steve Martin and Martin Short, and a pleasant, if not unexpected, vocal by Michelle Pfeiffer on "When You Believe." --Aaron Tassano

My 3 1/2 year old after watching the movie fell in love with the songs. She asks for me to play the CD for her almost daily. She enjoys singing to it. I enjoy being reminded that God is still fighting for us in our darkest moments.

The Prince of Egypt soundtrack is pure gold. Almost every song is homerun. We've listened to this disk many times and it never gets old. Keep in mind that several of the songs express powerful religious themes.

My whole family loves this CD. Unfortunately we have to turn the stereo way up to hear the songs at the right level--and portions of some songs are still hard to hear. If I had bought locally I would have returned this CD for a replacement.

Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson

Funk-rock-jazz classic! .......2007-06-27

This was, of course, Prince's breakthrough album, packed with huge hits: two #1's ("When Doves Cry", a bassless dance track; sterling funk-rocker "Let's Go Crazy"), one #2 (the slow, moving title track), and another Top 10 hit to boot ("I Would Die 4 U", Messianic but catchy), as well as the infamous "Darling Nikki" (which transcends "sexually suggestive") that spurred friggin' Tipper Gore to start the PRMC (an insult to everyone who believes in freedom of speech).Needless to say, it was huge -while I wasn't around during the decade, I think it was an '80s pop culture touchstone and certainly the album that made Prince a household name. It's also quite creative - check the bizarre ending to "Darling Nikki", which sounds like they chopped up and rearranged tapes or the one-ma nfunk-rock jam "Computer Blue". Add that to Prince's guitar, bass and keyboard playing everywhere (only Eddie Hazel is a better funk-rock guitarist) - particularly his guitar soloing on "When Does Cry"; "Computer Blue" and the title song. He's possibly the most talented multi-instrumentalists of our time, though Eric Dolphy and Brian Jones are stiff competitors. Topping it off is "The Beautiful Ones", a personal favorite of mine - it's one of the most intense, cathartic songs I've ever heard. So much for my perception of the '80s being totally soulless. Anyway, my only complaint - and a small one at that - is "Take Me With U" - not a bad song, but disarmingly sunny. Doesn't at all fit in with the rest of the album. Still, if this isn't his best album, it's second to Dirty Mind. (Oh, almost forgot the party song "Baby I'm a Star" - yet another standout song, the most traditional funk song here).

i love purple rain that and still is the best movie and soundtrack. i love darling nikki and beautiful ones. i love this movie. the other two movies was ok. prince is still sexy with the hip huggers and heels. no other man can wear that and be sexy. he is still handsome after all these years. i have been listening to prince since the 70's when he first came out. to all the fans purple rain was the movie of the decade. i love under the cherry moon also.

Greatest Album!.......2007-04-12

I love Prince and the movie Purple Rain, so naturally I would get it. The cd is worth every penny, I love every song on the ablum. It's truly one of those albums where you can listen to the entire thing without having to skip over songs you don't like which is rare. I recommend this cd to all Prince fans and Purple Rain lovers.

What a great soundtrack...brings me back to the age of 14, but who cares! The songs that were not overplayed on the radio are even better than the ones that were, but "When Doves Cry" will always be a fave no matter what - add it to your collection!

What can I say that the other 166 reviewers already haven't?

One thing, the greatest travesty in all of music... The title track "PURPLE RAIN" only hit #2 on the charts.

My wife of the past 10 wonderful years was my high school sweetheart at the time. She had a boyfriend and was seeing me on the side and couldn't quite break it off with him. Well we went to the Prince concert at the now "gone" Market Square Arena in Indianapolis (most famous as the site of Elvis Presley's last concert). The greatest moment was when Prince was singing "Do you want him, or do you want me, cause baby I want you" it was like he was just singing to us. I looked into her eyes and knew I would never love another like her and never have.

Buy the album, buy the Dvd, also (much harder) find the live concert VHS that has an almost 20 minute version of Purple Rain at the end of it.

Wasn't the purple "rain" at the Superbowl awesome?

Add 3121 to the mounting pile of evidence: Prince is the black Beck. He's a whole lot sexier, no doubt, but there's more to both musicians than image. All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third. Prince--looking ageless in videos for the first two singles, the controversy-courting "Black Sweat" and the sauna-steeped "Te Amo Corazon"--proves fearless as ever here, folding fat slabs of disco-funk into rock, heaping measured doses of hip-hop atop soul-tinted jazz supports, and slamming Latin rhythms against old-school R&B riffs. Nothing sounds as slinky-stylish-smart. And nobody delivers quite so deliciously, especially when what they're delivering is ultimately a madcap sonic mash. c'mon do I REALLY need to review this album?? Prince is one of the rare artist who transcends time. Some artist made a name for themselves with covers of other peoples music and may have inspired people with a limited palate, but Prince has ALWAYS been doing his thing, NONSTOP! You know when you buy a Prince album, the only thing to expect is the unexpected. Do I really need to review this album? You're joking right? It's PRINCE for crying outloud. :0)

Prince funkadelic album.......2007-06-29

I had bought this Prince album for my girlfriend, since she is a big Price fan. The only albums that I really love from Prince are "Purple Rain" and "1999" Know, I know that Prince had released some experimental albums, where he got more away from Rock/Funk and more into jazz, and those were OK. Some of his solo albums after Purple Rain, however, not so good. This is the best Prince release since Purple Rain. There are some great Funk songs on this album, and Prince seems like he is back with a vengence. There is some mild filler here, that makes it short from perfect, but still a great album. If you want Funk, this is the album to get.

I'm watching the Grammy Awards and a commercial comes on...it's Prince thanking the people who watched him perform at the Super Bowl. It was a very nice message, and he paid a lot of money just to do it. That's a real gentleman. When was the last time YOUR favorite artist dropped that kind of money to thank YOU?

Excellent resource for wedding planners.......2007-04-05

I work regularly with people planning church weddings who want the service to be dignified, traditional and formal. Often they have "ear memory" of music they've heard in other weddings, but no idea about its composer or title. This CD is the best compilation I've found of music that fits those requirements. Selections include great music and performances make it easy to imagine how they would sound in a particular church or other setting. Includes works by Protestant, Catholic and secular composers.

This CD was inexpensive, and provided a great way to preview songs for my wedding. The CD had a good song selection. My fiance and I were able to get a better idea of how the songs would be at our wedding. Definitely an inexpensive tool that is worthwhile.

I did not realize that this album was out. I was searching for the Prince CD's that I had lost and I found this one. Once again Prince does a GREAT job. He is never a disappointment.

Pretty good for the New Prince, but still not like the Old Prince.......2006-04-20

For $3 bucks, this ain't a bad deal. Pretty good for the New Prince, but not like the Old Prince, SST is an above-average track for Prince that, if added to his recent album, would have been a highlight. Odd Sade reference notwithstanding, this track has a cool New Orleans-style melody hook, complex, gospel-style vocals, and a nice vibe. While the intrumental jam BRAND NEW ORLEANS has a sorta clever title, it's really just another throwaway Prince groove that should have kept in The Vaults. Still, SST ranks as one of Prince's better recent cuts that puts most of his last-decade work to shame. Let's he stays this focused and raw and self-contained on his next full-length effort...but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

I had been hoping something like this would come along... the ultimate collection of the best of Prince. Sure, there were other songs I wish had been included (and the original version of Raspberry Beret) but overall, this is an awersome CD.

Before all the negative votes start piling up, let it be known that I come to praise Prince, not to bury him.

While I am perfectly happy to have a lot of these songs on one disc, I am also disappointed that a few songs are missing. Add to that I really don't care about "rare dance mixes" (yawnnnnnnn), then I am the rare listener to have issues with the second disc. I would have been much happier with "Kiss," "Pop Life" and "Raspberry Beret" in their album versions, instead we are forced to listen to dopey raps and cornball dialogue. Hardly the stuff of genius, even if I believe Prince to be one.

I am also perfectly happy to get a single disc with the cream of doff albums like "Parade" or "LoveSexy." Prince had his run of unbeatabilty that lasted up to "Purple Rain." But after that, even for a boy-wonder, things got spotty. That said, I do wish the "Batman" stuff was here, and maybe he'd have switched "Nothing Compares 2U" with "AnotherLoverHoleInYourHead." These being my personal quibbles, of course.

Prince was the soul machine of the 80's...an unstoppable force of nature that packed dancefloors all while charting his own course. He took risks and made them pay off (or not, if you think about the "Under The Cherry Moon" movie). But he played guitar like a Hendrix and funked like James Brown with an admitted Joni Mitchell fixation. What is not to love? The three star rating is for the clumsily compiled songs here, not for the merit of the music.

Now when are we getting the classic albums remastered?

No "Ultimate" compilation at all! Extended versions are the worst ever!.......2007-03-06

I got this album with the idea of getting what I thought was a reasonable good compilation of Prince's greatest hits. Well... CD 1 is okay... But... What about CD 2? The 'Extended' and 'Dance Mix' versions of "Little Red Corvette", "Rapsberry Beret", "Let's Go Crazy" and "Kiss" REALLY SUCK! Why to avoid the excellent, original versions? The people at Rhino made a really bad choice on issuing this awful compilation and titling it as "ULTIMATE"!!
I would prefer to return this awful "Ultimate" compilation, get my money back and try buying Prince albums individually!!

The Super Bowl Is At Halftime.......2007-02-05

In the hours leading to the Super Bowl, my prediction for the point in the show that will exceed the hype is halftime when Prince takes to the stage.

He was the icon of the music industry back in the day as a songwriter, producer and performer; his creative genius was that of Lennon/McCartney, Hendrix, Sly Stone, George Clinton & Phil Spector.

The two CDs feature 28 tracks, with 11 remixes on the second CD, including Let's Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, Kiss - and my favorite track - Pop Life. The original cuts on the first CD are classics; my highlights are I Wanna Be Your Lover, Controversy, 1999, I Would Die 4 U and Purple Rain.

This is truly an ultimate Prince collection and shows him at the top of his game with the major record label. Now if only the football surrounding the concert will be just a little entertaining!

Ultimate!!!.......2007-02-01

When we say Ultimate, It is done by a long process of things. This CD is no exception to the case. Warner music has done it again. Giving us a great selection of one of it all time hottest and most versatile artist. This retrospective CD is a great introduction of how really talented Prince is. Not only do you get the most popular, but a bonus CD of some long awaited Extended and rare dance hit collectables. The only downside to this is that there are still many tracks unavalible. Like for example*(Anotherloverholenyohead Extended version), Love or Money (B side of "kiss" single), Girl (Long version), Sexy Dancer(Dance mix), Erotic City(Dance Mix), America (Dance mix) and the list goes on and on. Nevertheless, it is still a great selection of tunes to own. Although, I wouldn't be too surprised to see Ultimate Prince 2 in the near future.
