Dan Zanes, lead singer of the 1980s roots-rock band the Del Fuegos, didn't need to enlist the high-profile help of pals Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega to produce a crowd-pleasing kids' record, but he got it anyway. On Rocket Ship Beach, where traditional tunes such as "Polly Wolly Doodle" (with Crow) and "Erie Canal" (with Vega) mingle in loosey-goosey, just-for-the-fun-of-it fashion with originals such as the plucky "All My Friends Live in the Woods" (written by Bad Company buddy Simon Kirke), Zanes exhibits the same plugged-in exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing. Besides the no-amateurs instrumentation, which includes Zanes on guitar, lap steel, banjo-mandolin, and studiophone, and G.E. Smith on banjo-mandolin and guitar as part of a kickin' string band that performs the classic "King Kong Kitchie," plus a cluster of others, what stands out most about this 17-track funfest is its draw-you-in friendliness. Pitching in with the pros (who also include dancehall rapper Rankin' Don--he delivers the gruff stuff on "Father Goose" and "Sunny Side of the Street") are family friends such as the gang of West Indian babysitters turned vocal group the Sandy Girls, who give it up to impressive, get-you-boogying effect on "Emmanuel Road," and a kindergarten class that contributes, adorably, to "Sidewalks of New York." All told, this is way hipper than most kids' records and it also razzle-dazzles with its packaging--Rocket Ship Beach arrives in a chunky, colorful board-book illustrated with sweet, fantasy-fueled beachside scenes by banjo player and Zanes's brother-in-law, Donald Saaf. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
music is in the air. it's alive and it's here for everyone. if you can play an old song, you can write a new song. make it a family parade, all around the kitchen cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo. or how about a family band? on the front steps, in the back yard, in the park, on the sidewalk, in the basement. if you can brush your teeth, you can play tamborine. if you can tell a joke, you can sing.festival five records is the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance. festival five records is the sound of a group of 9 and 10 year olds singing a sixty year old broadway song in the basement of a 150 year old row house. it's the sound of a 40-year-old dad on a blue porch singing a 400 year old story song about a frog that marries a mouse. when you feel that music in the air, try to catch as much as possible.

A gentle line-drawing marks the cover of the Hearless Bastards' sophomore album, All This Time, just a woman holding a dragonfly by its tail. Singer Erika Wennerstrom's yearning vocals and the rolling piano figures that open the album echo the cover. It's sensitive, full of feeling. Beware: It bursts open, with a wall of lean and loud guitar, bass, and drums - and Wennerstrom's room-filling mid-range vocals, blasting full-throatedly as she sings "Things are coming into focus!" The Cincinnati trio's 2005 debut, Stairs and Elevators, highlighted their blues roots, and All This Time takes those blues and folds them into a brawny rock pastry. Wennerstrom's voice is huge, an instant ear magnet that no one misses, a PJ Harvey from the heartland playing bold, large-stroke guitar. At once, the Bastards are bottom-heavy and beautifully melodic, taking flight--or at least harnessing the power of that album-cover dragonfly. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
This is a great cd!.......2007-05-24
Just buy this right now .......2007-05-16
I was honestly a bit put off by the cover art -- I imagined something like the Indigo Girls. In fact, this is bottom-heavy old-school rock and roll, with a slight country/blues twist, great powerhouse female lead vocals, great songwriting, great performances. It sounds really comfortable and familiar, but at the same time it's hard to think of an exact parallel -- if Lucinda Williams recorded a rock record, it might sound like this. Altogether a really captivating and satisfying rock album. This would have been a monstrous FM radio album back in the day. Into the Open, Brazen, Blue Day, and Valley of Debris are all awesome songs. Buy it.
Tough teen wisdom.......2007-04-19
Main brain Erika Wennerstrom performs open-heart surgery with a corroded six-string, blasting melodic knots of exuberance and experience. The low-fi grunge sound gets old after a while, though; how 'bout some separation between the instruments and, heavens, tweak the treble on the vocals? Choice cut: "All The Time" - Pretenders riff, Fiona Apple chords. Throughout the (short) set, Wennerstrom sings her guts out but never puts out, or grandstands. "Come A Long Way," the moody closer deserves a Cranberries'-sized budget.
Promising!
Now, try the next one in Cleveland!
Some sophomore jinx at play here.......2007-01-04
Energy and Simple Sophistication.......2006-11-06
There is a necessary simplicity to a band's music when it only contains three members, but the Heartless [...] manage to be both energetic and sophisticated; there's definitely more going on than you'll find after just a casual listen.
With only 10 tracks, there isn't a single bit of filler. Wennerstrom's vocals are really amazing too. I highly recommend giving these guys a listen.

For whatever reason, the so-called "Lost Provinces" of North Carolina--Ashe, Watauga, and Alleghany Counties--were a breeding ground for fantastic string bands in the late '20s. Maybe it was the isolated and tough nature of the region that inspired folks to turn to music. Or perhaps all those enterprising record companies were eager to sign old-time musicians. Whatever the case, the talent on this anthology of vintage 78 records is astounding and, at times, surprising. Is it possible, for instance, to listen to the Woodie Brothers sing "Likes Likker Better Than Me"--a woman's lament for her alcoholic love interest--with a straight face? Probably not. And why the heck did Jack Reedy & His Walker Mountain String Band use a Hawaiian guitar for the intro to "Chinese Breakdown"? Don't worry, there's also plenty of straightforward and memorable string band music here from the likes of Grayson & Whitter, Frank Blevins, the Smyth County Ramblers, and more. Throughout, you'll hear incredible old-time guitar, fiddle, and (thanks to Jack Reedy) banjo playing on a thoroughly engaging collection of laments, traditional tunes, and at least one presidential campaign number ("Governor Al Smith For President"). As with Old Hat's Violin, Sing the Blues for Me compilation, you'll find copious liner notes and excellent remastering in this wonderful package. --Jason VerlindeAlbum Description
Reissues 22 songs and tunes recorded between 1927-1931 by stringbands from Ashe County, North Carolina, a mountainous area in the northwest corner of the state once known as "The Lost Provinces" because of its extreme isolation. The music includes traditional fiddle tunes, folk songs, Anglo-Irish ballads, comic songs, topical numbers, and original compositions, all from a time period often called the "golden era" of old-time string music. The anthology brings together for the first time the complete recordings of Frank Blevins & His Tar Heel Rattlers, the Carolina Night Hawks, the North Carolina Ridge Runners, and many more. All tracks on the CD have been carefully remastered from original 78rpm records. A 28-page booklet presents a detailed history of the music based on interviews with original band members. Also included is a complete discography and numerous vintage photographs, many never before published. Music From The Lost Provinces is the premier release! from Old Hat Records, a label devoted to quality reissues coupled with thorough historical research.Customer Reviews:

Threw her Arms around me like Grape Vines 'round a Gum.......2006-11-20
GB Grayson, the archetype of the Mountain Fiddler, lived near Mountain City and was one of the most influential fiddlers of the '20's, who, with his partner Henry Whitter, toured the coal fields of West Virginia, until Grayson was killed in a freak accident, falling from the running board of a car that he was hitching a ride on, on August 16, 1930.
But Frank Blevins is the real star on this recording. He is a fiddler more seminal than Uncle Pen, his fiddle wrapping you 'round in kudzu vines of primal melody...
Real "Tar Heel" rattlin'!

Steve Forbert isn't the first singer to pay homage to the great Jimmie Rodgers--Lefty Frizzell and Merle Haggard both recorded fine tribute albums in their day--but he may well be the most unlikely. That doesn't make Any Old Time any less satisfying than previous tributes to the country music pioneer. Known variously as "the Singing Brakeman" and "America's Blue Yodeler," Rodgers was hillbilly music's first superstar, and he sang in a sweet, mellifluous voice that was widely imitated. Forbert is a fine songwriter, but his raspy croon has always been a bit of an acquired taste. Their voices couldn't be more different. Both singers, however, were born in Meridian, Mississippi, and one of Rodgers's distant cousins even taught Forbert how to play guitar. Coproduced by the E Street Band's Garry Tallent, who worked with Forbert on his 1988 release Streets of This Town, Any Old Time contains 12 of Rodgers's best-known songs. Forbert is reverential without being slavish to the material. He keeps things traditional on "Why Should I Be Lonely?" and "Waiting on a Train," both of which feature longtime Jerry Lee Lewis sideman Ken Lovelace on fiddle. But he transforms "Ben Dewberry's Final Run" into a greasy electric-blues number, with Bill Hullett picking a heavily reverbed electric guitar and Bobby Ogdin working the Hammond B-3, and he plays "My Rough and Rowdy Ways" as a Buddy Holly-style rockabilly rave-up. Naturally, Forbert gets off a few Rodgers-style yodels here and there, even if they're hardly in the same league as the originals. No matter: Forbert may sound a little ragged, but his heart is in the right place. --David HillCustomer Reviews:
Exceptional, original tribute to Jimmie Rodgers.......2002-10-25
The pairing of Forbert and Rodgers may have been inspired by their joint place of birth, Meridian, MS, but a spin through this disc shows a deeper musical connection. Forbert's warbling rasp of a voice is brilliantly transported by these songs to the decades that first heard them sung. It's a neat bit of alchemy that finds Forbert a crooner in the 1920s medicine shows and 1930s Vaudeville reviews of Rodgers' lifetime. Forbert's voice has always been an acquired taste, but -- almost magically -- its most unusual qualities, framed by Tallent's inventive production (and a superbly talented cast of backing musicians), are exactly what propel these tracks.
Across twelve songs closely associated with Rodgers (ten from his own pen), Forbert takes in many of the same influences that originally fueled the Singing Brakeman. Bobby Ogdin's saloon-styled rolling piano of "My Blue Eyed Jane," the mesh of life and the rails on "Train Whistle Blues," and the yodeling (which, according to Forbert is merely "a good spirited stab") of "Waiting on a Train" provide the essentials of Rodgers without being reduced to imitation. A few tracks turn on the electrics, such as the swamp-guitar of "Ben Dewberry's Final Run" and the up-beat Rockpile-by-way-of-the-Bobby-Fuller-Four romp of "My Rough and Rowdy Ways," but even with the amps plugged in, they hang on to the country heart of each song.
Fine listening for both Forbert's fans and lovers of the Rodgers songbook. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.

Lynerd Skynrd- Old Time Greats .......2007-02-02
It has it all!.......2006-08-21
The Best Skynyrd Compilation You Can Buy.......2002-07-25
Anyone who complains about a song missing from this collection is obviously meant to be a completist who should go out and get all of their studio albums. That aside, I don't understand why the definitive compilation from the greatest of Southern Rock bands had to tracked down in Germany of all places!
Best Lynyrd Skynyrd Compilation Available.......2002-06-23
My only minor quibble with this set is that the first disk is around 65 minutes while the second disk is around 70. A few more songs could have been added such as "I Never Dreamed" or "Was I Right Or Wrong" which appear on the "Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd" set. I also miss "Am I Losin", Ronnie's commentary on the departure of original drummer Bob Burns from the band and the live only "Travellin'Man" and live covers of "Crossroads" and "T For Texas from the "One From The Road" lp which is not represented on this set. However, if your budget is limited this is a necessary introduction to the 3 guitar sound of Southern rock greats Lynyrd Skynyrd. The disk is aptly named "Old Time Greats".

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written. Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
