Dan Zanes, lead singer of the 1980s roots-rock band the Del Fuegos, didn't need to enlist the high-profile help of pals Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega to produce a crowd-pleasing kids' record, but he got it anyway. On Rocket Ship Beach, where traditional tunes such as "Polly Wolly Doodle" (with Crow) and "Erie Canal" (with Vega) mingle in loosey-goosey, just-for-the-fun-of-it fashion with originals such as the plucky "All My Friends Live in the Woods" (written by Bad Company buddy Simon Kirke), Zanes exhibits the same plugged-in exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing. Besides the no-amateurs instrumentation, which includes Zanes on guitar, lap steel, banjo-mandolin, and studiophone, and G.E. Smith on banjo-mandolin and guitar as part of a kickin' string band that performs the classic "King Kong Kitchie," plus a cluster of others, what stands out most about this 17-track funfest is its draw-you-in friendliness. Pitching in with the pros (who also include dancehall rapper Rankin' Don--he delivers the gruff stuff on "Father Goose" and "Sunny Side of the Street") are family friends such as the gang of West Indian babysitters turned vocal group the Sandy Girls, who give it up to impressive, get-you-boogying effect on "Emmanuel Road," and a kindergarten class that contributes, adorably, to "Sidewalks of New York." All told, this is way hipper than most kids' records and it also razzle-dazzles with its packaging--Rocket Ship Beach arrives in a chunky, colorful board-book illustrated with sweet, fantasy-fueled beachside scenes by banjo player and Zanes's brother-in-law, Donald Saaf. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

music is in the air. it's alive and it's here for everyone. if you can play an old song, you can write a new song. make it a family parade, all around the kitchen cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo. or how about a family band? on the front steps, in the back yard, in the park, on the sidewalk, in the basement. if you can brush your teeth, you can play tamborine. if you can tell a joke, you can sing.

festival five records is the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance. festival five records is the sound of a group of 9 and 10 year olds singing a sixty year old broadway song in the basement of a 150 year old row house. it's the sound of a 40-year-old dad on a blue porch singing a 400 year old story song about a frog that marries a mouse. when you feel that music in the air, try to catch as much as possible.

5 out of 5 stars It's great!.......2007-01-27

I'm a first-time Mom who was looking for a CD both my daughter and I could enjoy. We rec'd this CD at Christmas along with "Buzz Buzz" by Laurie Berkner. This one is my personal favorite. I think I enjoy it as much, if not more than my daughter (who is 1). The songs are addicting and I, like a previous reviewer, find myself singing/humming them even when my daughter is not around. Polly Wolly Doodle and King Kong Kitchie are fabulous! I highly recommend giving this CD a spin. I'm sure my daughter will love it even more when she gets a little older.

1 out of 5 stars Honestly, this CD sucks.......2007-01-18

I was excited to receive this CD because of its great reviews. Once I received it however, I found it barely listenable. My toddler daughter looked and me and said "Off!Off!" and we took it off the CD player after only 10 minutes.

People can make of Raffi all they want, but at least his music is tolerable!

Don't waste your money on this lemon of a CD.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome CD!!!.......2006-12-20

My 2 year old and 1 year old think this CD ROCKS! My son will point to the CD player and cry and whine until I turn it on. From song one they both wiggle, giggle and dance all over. The songs are very folksy, upbeat, and easy to groove too. Get this CD and watch your kids get jiggy wit' it!

5 out of 5 stars rocket ship beach review.......2006-11-10

Rocket Ship Beach was my introduction to Dan Zanes. I have a new son and I was searching for some music we could both enjoy. I found this and thought I would give it a shot. The cd is wonderful. The music is addicting and I find myself driving down the road singing to myself....without my son in the car! Polly Wolly Doodle, the first track, is one of my favorites (and not because I am a Sheryl Crow fan). Another beautiful song is "Hello". This cd is upbeat, fun and yet different from some more typical childrens music. My son really enjoys the different sounds and rhythms on the cd. The cd has a few little introductions where you can hear children, a phone ringing, ect. This cd is sure to put you in a good mood. I highly recommend it! I am actually waiting for another Dan Zanes cd to arrive I liked it so much.

5 out of 5 stars we all love it.......2006-08-05

The whole family can enjoy this music, unlike many of the other kid's music that is so lame.

A gentle line-drawing marks the cover of the Hearless Bastards' sophomore album, All This Time, just a woman holding a dragonfly by its tail. Singer Erika Wennerstrom's yearning vocals and the rolling piano figures that open the album echo the cover. It's sensitive, full of feeling. Beware: It bursts open, with a wall of lean and loud guitar, bass, and drums - and Wennerstrom's room-filling mid-range vocals, blasting full-throatedly as she sings "Things are coming into focus!" The Cincinnati trio's 2005 debut, Stairs and Elevators, highlighted their blues roots, and All This Time takes those blues and folds them into a brawny rock pastry. Wennerstrom's voice is huge, an instant ear magnet that no one misses, a PJ Harvey from the heartland playing bold, large-stroke guitar. At once, the Bastards are bottom-heavy and beautifully melodic, taking flight--or at least harnessing the power of that album-cover dragonfly. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars This is a great cd!.......2007-05-24

I recently purchased this cd, and I love it. She has a great singing voice, and the music rocks! If you get the chance, go see them live. Simply amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Just buy this right now .......2007-05-16

I was honestly a bit put off by the cover art -- I imagined something like the Indigo Girls. In fact, this is bottom-heavy old-school rock and roll, with a slight country/blues twist, great powerhouse female lead vocals, great songwriting, great performances. It sounds really comfortable and familiar, but at the same time it's hard to think of an exact parallel -- if Lucinda Williams recorded a rock record, it might sound like this. Altogether a really captivating and satisfying rock album. This would have been a monstrous FM radio album back in the day. Into the Open, Brazen, Blue Day, and Valley of Debris are all awesome songs. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Tough teen wisdom.......2007-04-19

Recorded in Cincinnati!

Main brain Erika Wennerstrom performs open-heart surgery with a corroded six-string, blasting melodic knots of exuberance and experience. The low-fi grunge sound gets old after a while, though; how 'bout some separation between the instruments and, heavens, tweak the treble on the vocals? Choice cut: "All The Time" - Pretenders riff, Fiona Apple chords. Throughout the (short) set, Wennerstrom sings her guts out but never puts out, or grandstands. "Come A Long Way," the moody closer deserves a Cranberries'-sized budget.

Promising!

Now, try the next one in Cleveland!

3 out of 5 stars Some sophomore jinx at play here.......2007-01-04

Not as strong as the first CD. Not as bluesy. For some reason, the record engineering seems sub-par as well.

5 out of 5 stars Energy and Simple Sophistication.......2006-11-06

While I'm sure there is a long and rich history which the Heartless [...] draw on and into which they fit - I know none of it. What I do know is that this album is truly amazing.

There is a necessary simplicity to a band's music when it only contains three members, but the Heartless [...] manage to be both energetic and sophisticated; there's definitely more going on than you'll find after just a casual listen.

With only 10 tracks, there isn't a single bit of filler. Wennerstrom's vocals are really amazing too. I highly recommend giving these guys a listen.

For whatever reason, the so-called "Lost Provinces" of North Carolina--Ashe, Watauga, and Alleghany Counties--were a breeding ground for fantastic string bands in the late '20s. Maybe it was the isolated and tough nature of the region that inspired folks to turn to music. Or perhaps all those enterprising record companies were eager to sign old-time musicians. Whatever the case, the talent on this anthology of vintage 78 records is astounding and, at times, surprising. Is it possible, for instance, to listen to the Woodie Brothers sing "Likes Likker Better Than Me"--a woman's lament for her alcoholic love interest--with a straight face? Probably not. And why the heck did Jack Reedy & His Walker Mountain String Band use a Hawaiian guitar for the intro to "Chinese Breakdown"? Don't worry, there's also plenty of straightforward and memorable string band music here from the likes of Grayson & Whitter, Frank Blevins, the Smyth County Ramblers, and more. Throughout, you'll hear incredible old-time guitar, fiddle, and (thanks to Jack Reedy) banjo playing on a thoroughly engaging collection of laments, traditional tunes, and at least one presidential campaign number ("Governor Al Smith For President"). As with Old Hat's Violin, Sing the Blues for Me compilation, you'll find copious liner notes and excellent remastering in this wonderful package. --Jason Verlinde

Album Description

Reissues 22 songs and tunes recorded between 1927-1931 by stringbands from Ashe County, North Carolina, a mountainous area in the northwest corner of the state once known as "The Lost Provinces" because of its extreme isolation. The music includes traditional fiddle tunes, folk songs, Anglo-Irish ballads, comic songs, topical numbers, and original compositions, all from a time period often called the "golden era" of old-time string music. The anthology brings together for the first time the complete recordings of Frank Blevins & His Tar Heel Rattlers, the Carolina Night Hawks, the North Carolina Ridge Runners, and many more. All tracks on the CD have been carefully remastered from original 78rpm records. A 28-page booklet presents a detailed history of the music based on interviews with original band members. Also included is a complete discography and numerous vintage photographs, many never before published. Music From The Lost Provinces is the premier release! from Old Hat Records, a label devoted to quality reissues coupled with thorough historical research.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Music From The Lost Provinces.......2007-06-18

EXCELLENT. It is must have. It is a collection of the good ole country music. It features many different artists both who made it big in those days like Emphriam Woodie to the lesser names like Vance' Mountain Ramblers. It is an excellent find

4 out of 5 stars another excellent release from old hat........2007-04-04

i like or love everything that i've heard from the folks at old hat. it is simply a marvelous label that specializes in old-time music releases. "music from the lost provinces" is another outstanding cd from them. twenty-two fine tracks from 1927-1931 presented with very good sound quality. a cornucopia of fiddlers and guitar-pickers and banjo players and hillbilly singers. this is a must for all fans of old-time rural music. magic from a bygone era.

5 out of 5 stars Threw her Arms around me like Grape Vines 'round a Gum.......2006-11-20

This is the Holy Grail of Mountain Fiddle Music!

GB Grayson, the archetype of the Mountain Fiddler, lived near Mountain City and was one of the most influential fiddlers of the '20's, who, with his partner Henry Whitter, toured the coal fields of West Virginia, until Grayson was killed in a freak accident, falling from the running board of a car that he was hitching a ride on, on August 16, 1930.

But Frank Blevins is the real star on this recording. He is a fiddler more seminal than Uncle Pen, his fiddle wrapping you 'round in kudzu vines of primal melody...

Real "Tar Heel" rattlin'!

5 out of 5 stars great old-time music.......2005-09-18

Excellent collection of old-time stringband music. You may not like every song on the album but it is a great assortment of many different styles of playing and singing. A "must have"
album for collectors and people that play old-time music.

5 out of 5 stars Super-cool, super rare old-timey music.......2002-07-27

It's pretty amazing, this late in the folkloric/historic reissues game, to find a whole album's worth of "undiscovered" old-timey music that is of such a high caliber. Old Hat Records, a tiny North Carolina indie label, packs its discs with some of the best music in the style that you're ever likely to hear. (You might also want to check out the "Violin, Sing For Me" and "Folks, He Sure Do Pull Some Bow" CDs...) This disc concentrates its attention geographically, collecting old 78s from artists out of Ashe County, NC, one of those backwoods areas unusually rich in hillbilly talent. The best known of these artists was the team of Grayson & Whitter (who were favorites of Ralph Stanley), but there are plenty of other great Ashe County artists on here, with fab names like The Woodies, The Carolina Night Hawks and (my favorite) Ephraim Woodie & The Henpecked Husbands. In addition to great sound quality and great material, both discs are also quite handsomely packaged; the insert booklets include some really cool archival photos, as well as extensive liner notes of the sort that have been woefully absent on similar recent reissue efforts.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

5 out of 5 stars Well, it rocks this babe.......2006-02-26

This is an amazing album. I think that even people who are unfamiliar or new to folk will love this disc. They love what they're doing, and it comes through in every song. Joyful. Excellent for dancing around while folding laundry. :)

This album rocks. I was lucky enough to catch the Mammals live with Arlo Guthrie and they were absolutely fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars Bluegrass Blast.......2004-06-15

The Mammals' sophomore effort is a blast of bluegrass-flavored energy performed with gusto. From the opener "Fall On My Knees," they attack the music with energy as Ruth Ungar sings, "You've told me more lies than there are stars in the sky; you'll never get to heaven when you die." "The Bush Boys" is a bit risky for a band to take a strong political position since part of your audience is not going to agree. However, if you're part of the population who are not fans of President Bush, this will seem hilarious as Mammals apes part of the "Mockingbird" tune, "Hush little baby, don't you cry, daddy's going to buy you an alibi; If that alibi don't work, daddy's going to bribe the county clerk; If that county clerk don't bribe, daddy's got Congress on his side; If that Congress still don't budge, daddy's in tight with a Supreme Court judge." It's heady stuff and may only be timely for a limited time. If Bush wins in the fall, Bush critics can enjoy this one for the next 4 years. Tao Rodriguez is the grandson of folk legend Pete Seeger and plays banjo, guitar & mandolin in the best folk tradition as on the instrumental "Reel Du Bebe." "Father William" is a dark tune about sins of the clergy. "Bad Shoes Blues" is a great kitchen sink protest song that combines overseas labor abuses, genetically engineered vegetables and pro-choice causes. The traditional "John Henry" is a tune that Tao learned from his grandpa, performed in an energetic reading of this traditional tune. "Pearls" is a standout track with an interesting lyric & a Dylanesque vocal reading by Michael Merenda. Ruth Ungar's "Tinderbox" is a haunting mournful melody, "There's a spark inside my mind that contradicts all the sparks that burn around it; one day it might be a fire if that far-off feeling ever found it." Pete Seeger's "Quite Early Morning" is given a loving gentle recitation. Mammals' "Rock That Babe" is a good set of folk tunes filled with energy and sterling musicianship. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars rock this cd.......2004-05-26

The Mammals play with an incredible amount of energy, and this cd does the best job yet of capturing their dynamic style on disc. Ruth Ungar's vocals really shine on several of the tracks (notably "Fall on My Knees" and "Tinderbox"), not to mention her fiery fiddle (esp. on "Hellgate"). The addition of bass and drums to the more traditional old-timey instruments works much better than you might think--each is complementary, neither overwhelms the rest of the band, and the effect fits well with their propulsive style.

While I highly recommend this cd, I even more highly recommend seeing The Mammals live (check their website for touring info). They give one of the best shows that I've seen in any genre of music--Michael Merenda is a first-rate songwriter and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger's energy really gets the crowd engaged. They obviously love to play together, which makes for a great time all round!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-05-21

What an amazing group! From the vocals to the instrumental, these kids can play!! Mixing old time music with a new time flare, The Mammals are sure to be heard.

4 out of 5 stars hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Steve Forbert isn't the first singer to pay homage to the great Jimmie Rodgers--Lefty Frizzell and Merle Haggard both recorded fine tribute albums in their day--but he may well be the most unlikely. That doesn't make Any Old Time any less satisfying than previous tributes to the country music pioneer. Known variously as "the Singing Brakeman" and "America's Blue Yodeler," Rodgers was hillbilly music's first superstar, and he sang in a sweet, mellifluous voice that was widely imitated. Forbert is a fine songwriter, but his raspy croon has always been a bit of an acquired taste. Their voices couldn't be more different. Both singers, however, were born in Meridian, Mississippi, and one of Rodgers's distant cousins even taught Forbert how to play guitar. Coproduced by the E Street Band's Garry Tallent, who worked with Forbert on his 1988 release Streets of This Town, Any Old Time contains 12 of Rodgers's best-known songs. Forbert is reverential without being slavish to the material. He keeps things traditional on "Why Should I Be Lonely?" and "Waiting on a Train," both of which feature longtime Jerry Lee Lewis sideman Ken Lovelace on fiddle. But he transforms "Ben Dewberry's Final Run" into a greasy electric-blues number, with Bill Hullett picking a heavily reverbed electric guitar and Bobby Ogdin working the Hammond B-3, and he plays "My Rough and Rowdy Ways" as a Buddy Holly-style rockabilly rave-up. Naturally, Forbert gets off a few Rodgers-style yodels here and there, even if they're hardly in the same league as the originals. No matter: Forbert may sound a little ragged, but his heart is in the right place. --David Hill

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Exceptional, original tribute to Jimmie Rodgers.......2002-10-25

As country music's first superstar, Jimmie Rodgers' songbook and style have been celebrated by everyone from Louis Armstrong to The Cramps. His stamp is heard on every generation of country musicians, and the repercussions of his work have fanned out into all the related genres. Steve Forbert, having made a name for himself as a folkie, spent the last couple of decades in and out of Nashville, working with ex-E-Streeter Garry Tallent (whose production is key to this album), Pete Anderson, and others. Forbert's continued to write, record and tour, though never seeming to fully capitalize on the critical response to his earlier work-- which isn't to suggest that his music and artistic vision haven't progressed and deepened -- they have, perhaps even more so out of the mainstream spotlight.

The pairing of Forbert and Rodgers may have been inspired by their joint place of birth, Meridian, MS, but a spin through this disc shows a deeper musical connection. Forbert's warbling rasp of a voice is brilliantly transported by these songs to the decades that first heard them sung. It's a neat bit of alchemy that finds Forbert a crooner in the 1920s medicine shows and 1930s Vaudeville reviews of Rodgers' lifetime. Forbert's voice has always been an acquired taste, but -- almost magically -- its most unusual qualities, framed by Tallent's inventive production (and a superbly talented cast of backing musicians), are exactly what propel these tracks.

Across twelve songs closely associated with Rodgers (ten from his own pen), Forbert takes in many of the same influences that originally fueled the Singing Brakeman. Bobby Ogdin's saloon-styled rolling piano of "My Blue Eyed Jane," the mesh of life and the rails on "Train Whistle Blues," and the yodeling (which, according to Forbert is merely "a good spirited stab") of "Waiting on a Train" provide the essentials of Rodgers without being reduced to imitation. A few tracks turn on the electrics, such as the swamp-guitar of "Ben Dewberry's Final Run" and the up-beat Rockpile-by-way-of-the-Bobby-Fuller-Four romp of "My Rough and Rowdy Ways," but even with the amps plugged in, they hang on to the country heart of each song.

Fine listening for both Forbert's fans and lovers of the Rodgers songbook. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Skynyrd Compilation You Can Buy.......2002-07-25

This is hands down the best Skynyrd compilation you can find, well worth the hefty import price. Their first, "Gold & Platinum" left out "Call Me The Breeze", "Don't Ask Me No Questions" and "Workin' For MCA", plus it contained live versions of a few songs (including "Freebird"). Later compilations like "Skynyrd's Innyrds" and "The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd" added these songs back, but still left off other essentials and still included live versions and alternate takes. This is the only Skynyrd album that (for me, anyway) includes absolutely every essential track, plus a few cool ones you may not know ("White Dove", "Searching", "Cry For A Bad Man", etc.) all in their original well-known versions. And the packaging is really cool!

Anyone who complains about a song missing from this collection is obviously meant to be a completist who should go out and get all of their studio albums. That aside, I don't understand why the definitive compilation from the greatest of Southern Rock bands had to tracked down in Germany of all places!

5 out of 5 stars Best Lynyrd Skynyrd Compilation Available.......2002-06-23

Lynyrd Skynyrd along with the Allman Brothers Band are perhaps the greatest practitioners of Southern Rock. This 2 cd import set contains 30 of their best and most well known songs. The band's 3 guitar attack and the smart lyrics of Ronnie Van Zant made them one of the most popular American bands of the seventies. The Jacksonville band was influenced not only by the blues and country influences of the South but also by British rock bands like the Cream and Free. Allen Collin's Clapton like solos were a contrast to Gary Rossington's more Paul Kossoff like sustain while Ed King added his own distinctive fills and solos as necessary. Later after King quit Steve Gaines added a fingerpicking element to the three guitar attack. This set contains early material from their "First and Last" album through "Street Survivors". Radio favorites like "Free Bird", "Gimme Three Steps", "Saturday Night Special", "Sweet Home Alabama", "That Smell", "Simple Man" and "Tuesday's Gone" are all included. Also included are a number of my favorites which are not included on the domestic "Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd" compilation like "Poison Whiskey", "The Needle And The Spoon", "On The Hunt" and "Searching". It should be noted that this set contains 5 more tracks than the "Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd" set (6 if you consider that "Free Bird" appears on that set twice). "Old Time Greats" contains only original studio versions of the tracks, no live versions or alternate takes.

My only minor quibble with this set is that the first disk is around 65 minutes while the second disk is around 70. A few more songs could have been added such as "I Never Dreamed" or "Was I Right Or Wrong" which appear on the "Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd" set. I also miss "Am I Losin", Ronnie's commentary on the departure of original drummer Bob Burns from the band and the live only "Travellin'Man" and live covers of "Crossroads" and "T For Texas from the "One From The Road" lp which is not represented on this set. However, if your budget is limited this is a necessary introduction to the 3 guitar sound of Southern rock greats Lynyrd Skynyrd. The disk is aptly named "Old Time Greats".

5 out of 5 stars skynyrd at its finest.......2000-04-29

This two disc set of Lynyrd Skynyrd is the definitive statement of the bands original tenure, 1970-1977. Repertoire has done a wonderful job of remastering the material and this set includes all the essential, seminal studio-only recordings of the co-kings of southern rock (with due respect to the Allman Brothers). If there are any quibbles at all with the set it is that the playing time is skimpy at 134 minutes, but that is truly quibbling. From "Tuesdays Gone" to "That Smell" all the essentials are here. The track listing is superior to MCA's "Essential Skynyrd" and along with the MCA box will provide enough of the original Skynyrd for all but the absolute completists.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!
