4 out of 5 stars A stroll down memory lane.......2007-07-15

We bought this CD to play at a family reunion honoring my wife's 91-year-old mother, an 87-year-old uncle and two aunts of the same generation. The tunes brought back a lot of memories.

5 out of 5 stars Super collection.......2007-03-18

All the best of the best original artists. Brings back a lot of memories. Sound and selection not to be equaled. No need of another collection.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Single Time Swing.......2007-05-29

This is jitterbug. The title SWING is confusing. There is East Coast swing, West Coast swing, etc. This is big band swing. Only for limited use in teaching swing.

5 out of 5 stars Best I've Heard.......2002-07-11

I purchased several swing collections previously and they all had poor quality audio - they had not been cleaned up from the original recordings. This CD is MUCH cleaner and makes for an enjoyable experience.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but some tracks don't belong here.......2002-04-07

The main problem with this CD is the coupling of great tracks with fairly awful ones.

On the great side, you have Benny Goodman's rollicking "Don't Be That Way" and a song destined to kill live in "Sing Sing Sing." Tommy Dorsey's beautiful "Opus One" and lively "Boogie Woogie." Duke Ellington's signature "Take The 'A' Train." Artie Shaw's bouncing "Back Bay Shuffle." Glenn Miller's theme for jitterbuggers, "In The Mood."

Then there are the disappointments. The whitebread "Casa Loma Stomp" by Glen Grey. The cringe-inducing "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" by Bunny Berigan. The extremely silly "Mary Had A Little Lamb" by Fletcher Henderson, which is especially disillusioning to hear when one considers that Henderson supplied a good many of Benny Goodman's hard swinging band arrangements!

We can at least be thankful that Kay Keiser and Hal Kemp didn't show up on this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Swing Revival Met "Fabulous"-ly On RCA Big Band Set.......2001-01-14

RCA's "Fabulous Swing Collection" was released to exploit a national big band revival craze, led by groups like Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Brian Setzer's Orchestra and in full swing (pardon the pun) in 1998. That revival has cooled but this generous (19 songs, 65 minutes) set remains among the era's better one-disc compilations (all songs from RCA family labels) for now third-generation fans.

It may not have been all the classics revivalists danced to; two swingin' Louises (Prima and Jordan) recorded their jump, jive and wailin' big band tunes for Capitol and Decca Records, respectively. But many of the era's signature tunes are represented, sounding surprisingly warm in analog sound: Glenn Miller's anthemic "In The Mood," "String of Pearls," and "American Patrol," Benny Goodman's hard, wild swinging "Sing, Sing, Sing" (heard recently and famously in a cookie commercial but better in Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall concert), Cab Calloway's 1933 "Minnie The Moocher," which he performed nearly a half-century later in the first "Blues Brothers" film and here does in full-throated youthful yodel.

You also get seminal sides from Charlie Barnet ("Cherokee"), Tommy Dorsey ("Marie," "Opus One"), and Duke Ellington ("Take The 'A' Train," "Cotton Tail"). While these songs swing sweeter than 1998's martini-and-cigar crowd might have liked, "Fabulous" may well be among the few big band CDs a new fan would need. Longtime fans have these classics on the artists' original LPs (or more studious sets like Columbia's "16 Most Requested Big Band Themes") and can probably swing past it.

4 out of 5 stars Good names but lacking energy.......2000-08-24

It has a good selection of songs but some of the songs are not performed with as much energy as I've heard on other CDs. Some of the songs are also slower versions of songs I love, like "In the Mood" and "Minnie the Moocher". Not a very good lindyhop CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for teaching.......2007-05-29

It's rather old but the tempos are good. Music is fine. Very danceable.

4 out of 5 stars Historic, danceable, and a bargain!.......2007-04-02

Arthur Murray (born Moses Teichman in 1895) became a franchising legend in the 30s and 40s as he sold rights to teach his "footstep" dance patterns across the United States. He opened his first franchised dance studio in 1938, and these numbered more than 3,500 at their peak. Following the Second World War, he put heavy emphasis on the "Latin American" dance steps that he adapted from several long visits to Cuba. Part of his genius was borrowing the "strict-tempo" dance rhythm ideas he heard from Victor Silvester and the best of the British dance bands. With the exception of a slight retard at the end of the song, a strict tempo made it easier for men to count their steps and help their partners look better.

The tempos - appropriate in 1960 - tend to be a little faster than current DanceSport preferences. With due respect to other esteemed reviewers, tracks 8 and 18 need not be labeled rock-n-roll. Try dancing West Coast Swing to track 8 and Lindy-hop to track 18 and your feet will feel oh so good! This collection is indeed a "fabulous" bargain at $11.99.

5 out of 5 stars GRCD34.......2006-08-21

This is a very good collection of classic dance music by Arthur Murray Orchestras.

3 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Ballroom Collection-Arthur Murray Orchestra.......2006-08-07

I ordered the CD in order to have a variety of music for dancing and will be using it. It is not as good as a couple of other CDs I ordered; however, it is more than passable.

3 out of 5 stars Older music for American Style Dancing.......2006-03-31

I do not have this CD but I listened through the samples. It sounded like bunch of latin music with a little bit of standard music. However one thing that I will tell you about this CD is that if you are planning to dance any International style ballroom dancing, this CD is not for you. If you are dancing American style and enjoy old music from 50's buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Electric Guitar played by the Master.......1998-06-13

This album, while not representative of the years when Les Paul and Mary Ford ruled the charts, captures some very tasty guitar playing. Les is of the school of music which says "if you want to deviate from the melody, you'd better have a better one!". Students of lead guitar and jazz improvisation would do well to study this album closely. The Master presents the electric guitar with practically every effect and treatment that made him famous, yet with a touch and sensitivity which shows his supreme artistry at its best. Mary's lush voice is only present occasionally, which is a pity.

Les Paul started the electric guitar fire. Lest we forget.

P.S. Amazon.com's database cannot decide whether Les Paul is a Jazz, Rock or Pop artist. Neither can I!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Should have read the reviews before I scooped this one up.......2007-07-10

Okay, the heart of the soundtrack music is on here, but the riffs that make the movie what it is not. This is a canned studio performance that doesn't bear any resemblance to the live feel of parts of the film.

If you just like the songs the way they'd be recorded, this CD might be okay. My preference would be to buy most of this material from the original artists if the soundtrack doesn't have the feel of the movie.

2 out of 5 stars Good CD, but disappointing selection of songs from the movie.......2007-07-04

I was expecting a lot more vocal numbers and not so many instrumentals.

It is a very strange selection of songs from the movie.

5 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Baker Boys.......2007-05-07

We've had The Fabulous Baker Boys video for over 15 years and always enjoyed the soundtrack. When I saw it for sale it was natural to want to have it for our car music system. Happily, it features the instrumentals rather than Michelle Pfeiffer (tho her singing wasn't bad, either).

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't meet expectations.......2006-08-26

If you liked the movie, don't buy the soundtrack, because what you liked about the movie isn't on the soundtrack! Listening to the soundtrack left us frustrated and wondering where all the good music was!

2 out of 5 stars Where's the goods?.......2006-04-23

It's been a long time since I purchased this Soundtrack(?)Album and since then I've p##sed-off about the lack of what's so good about the movie not being on this album. Where's all the tricky piano interludes including the jazz club gigs and Jeff's(of course it's not really his)solo stuff and the brothers singing Sweet Sixteen. But the worst of all is the total lack of Michelle's singing. From her audition and that incredible More Than You Know to her debut and Ten Cents a Dance to the montage of Can't Take My Eyes Off of You to the big time and The Look of Love. Where are they?

For that matter where's Michelle's album. Singers always want to be actors and actors be singers. This has got to be the first case of an actor who didn't want to be a singer and the real irony is this one's got a voice, one of soul and character.

So anyway, soundtrack albums usually are from the movie and rather than shorten the numbers they extended full versions and seldom leave you longing for what's not there. This is a very big exception. There appears to be material that's not from the original soundtrack. If I'm mistaken, shoot me, but I don't remember some of this stuff and it certainly wasn't what I was buying this CD to hear. It's sorta like the photo on the album, nice picture but it's not in the movie.

The two star rating isn't for the quality of the material on the album, it's for not filling the standard requirements of a soundtrack album. It leaves much to be desired.

5 out of 5 stars Limeliters:Slightly Fabulous Limeliters and Sing Out!.......2007-01-12

The quality of the CD was great, better sounds than the original records. I have bought several of these double albums and will buy more. They are a great value.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-12

I enjoyed this record as a child growing up during the Sixties. I feel that the Limeliters were on of the greatest folk groups of the era.

5 out of 5 stars Serendipity!.......2007-01-09

To find these albums, together with "Tonight in Person." How did I live so long without hearing of these deservedly-titled "classics?" These are extremely accomplished musicians, well-crafted productions, and in concept and execution merge right into the rare Brilliant Lane. Instant treasures and will be often and long played.

5 out of 5 stars Youth can return, in your mind!.......2006-11-12

I purchased my first record (a 45) in 1955. I was 8 years old. It was Bill Haley and the Comets playing "See you later Alligator". Since that date I have acquired a lot of music on vinyl albums, CDs, DVDs, and a real small collection of audio tapes.

I've been in the Data Processing/computer industry since 1965. I find putting music from the Limeliters, 4 Preps, and so many others on my iPod and listening to it at work, keeps me relaxed.

All of the 30s, 40, 50, 60s, music is where I'm at. There have been a few artists in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and into the new century that I also like. My iPod has quite a range with it's 1200 songs. I didn't get a larger one because I also listen to the music while riding my Honda Valkyrie motorcycle cruiser. I did a 3600 mile trip in July 2006. The music made the trip even more spacial, special, and feeling, I am a Free Spirit!

This is a great album! This has all of their great hits.I highly recommend this album!

Kim Wilson solo is even better! I saw him at a
blues club by the Virginia Beach oceanfront ten
years ago. He interacted well with the crowd and
slapped me five when he came into audience. But
'Fabulous' Thunderbirds is a stretch. Good or
better than Avg. would be sufficient!

5 out of 5 stars Great Rock N' Roll!.......2005-10-22

The Fabulous Thunderbirds are what real Rock n' Roll is all about! This is a really good compilation, it hits all the high spots and is a joy to listen to. The sound is very good and everything about this compilation is just great. If you love good Rock, you need this!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection Of Late T-Birds.......2005-08-22

HOT STUFF: THE GREATEST HITS is a wonderful collection of the Fabulous Thunderbirds' later material, which combined their Texas R&B with a Memphis funk style to create a blend which succeeded in crossing over to rock radio. You should buy this anthology and the first four CDs first to start your Fabulous Thunderbirds collection.

Album Description

Remember when "diva" was a mantle of honor bestowed on only the finest singers, the grandest dames of song, rather than just the latest streetcorner chanteuse? During the early 1950's, the big bands were winding down and rock 'n' roll was revving up. Meantime, many former "girl singers" stepped off the bandstand and into the spotlight as soloists, and the great age of the diva began. Names like "Patti Page," "Teresa Brewer," or "Dinah Shore" evoked not just a popular song or an alluring look, but a voice - fascinating, unique, and timeless. For those talented women, "diva" was more than a mere marketing tool, it was a well-earned title.

For their debut release, Hit Parade Records presents a delightful, distaff tour through those wonderful years. This 61-minute disc overflows with 23 gems from the finest female singers of the decade digitally remastered for the highest quality sound!

Hit Parade Records is a new Canadian label dedicated to finding, restoring, and preserving lost treasures like these. Hit Parade was assisted by the same creative folks who lovingly compile those great Eric CD's - including Greg Adams, whose detailed liner notes will fascinate you as you listen to all the Fabulous Fifties Divas! And, don't miss Hit Parade's manly companion album, Fabulous Fifties Crooners.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lots of lost 45's (and maybe even 78's) in this terrific new collection from Canada's Hit Parade records.......2007-01-26

If you are over the age of 60 I am sure you would remember most of them. As far as I know the vast majority of these tunes have been out of print for decades. In 2006, Hit Parade records based in Ontario, Canada released this marvelous collection entitled "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits". For collectors this is a virtual treasure trove of classic 1950's pop tunes. And even though I have been collecting for more than 40 years now there were around ten songs I had never even heard before. I had an awful lot of fun just sampling many of these tunes for the very first time.
Now there certainly are some mighty big hits among the nearly two dozen tunes that appear on this disc. Perhaps my favorite is Patti Page's 1954 #2 smash "Cross Over The Bridge". I doubt that Sarah Vaughn was capable of making a bad record. You will find two of her memorable hits on this disc including her rendition of "Mr. Wonderful" as well as the flirtatious "Make Yourself Comfortable" that also made the Top Ten in 1954. And of course the great Teresa Brewer had any number of big hits in those days. You will find both "Let Me Go, Lover" and "A Tear Fell" included as well.
As I mentioned earlier, "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" also includes about a dozen songs that had virtually disappeared years ago and were impossible to find anywhere at any price. Among these is the original version of "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" which was a #5 hit for one Karen Chandler on the old Coral label back in 1952. And then there is Jaye P. Morgan's "The Longest Walk" from 1955. Somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind I remember hearing that one when I was a kid but I had not heard this song for over 40 years! You will also find hits by great female vocalists like June Valli, Rosemary Clooney and Gogi Grant and many others. And in the category of "hidden gems" I would recommend to you track 21 "Blue Star(The "Medic" Theme)" by Felicia Sanders, a cabaret singer I had never even heard of. That one just might be the best song in the entire collection. "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" concludes with the legendary British songstress Vera Lynn belting out her 1953 hit version of the great World War II classic "We'll Meet Again". It doesn't get much better than that!
For those who might be concerned that these might be cheap re-recordings let me assure you that these are all the original hit versions you would remember from the radio. Also included is a neat 8 page booklet with information on all of these fine ladies as well as the Billboard chart information on each and every one of these tunes. "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits' was a great addition to my collection. I eagerly look forward to more releases from this label. If you love this music, it would be a great addition to your library as well. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Give this one a try also.......2006-07-03

Another gem from the people at Eric Records, home of the Hard to Find series. As with the Crooners CD this one has excellent sound quality; better than the compliation and individual artist CD's that I already own.
A great selection of arists and songs with mostly big hits from the 50-55 era including two songs that I have never before found on any CD - "If I Give My Heart to You" by Denise Lor and "I Understand" by June Valli.
Being a child of the 50's and 60's and being around to witness the birth of Rock 'n' Roll, I have always been a collector of the Rock music of the era. However, I have now found a new appreciation for the early 50's music of my parents and it's great to have series such as these to help me relive the old songs.
There are still lots of songs out there that are not available on CD so I hope that this series will continue.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut .......2007-02-26

When I first heard the Fabulous Thunderbirds was after I purchased "What's The Word", I was hooked after that. This debut recording I heard later and it blew me away as well. The bonus tracks on the cd are a pleasant addition.

5 out of 5 stars Agents of 6th Street, Austin, Texas.......2006-07-30

This is probably one of the best blues recording I've picked up in a while. I was curious to see what the early Fabulous Thunderbirds sounded like and all I can say is WOW. I picked this up on, of all things, LP at Half Price Book in Austin, Texas. All the songs are great, Jimmy Lee burns it up on Full Time Lover.

Very similar in style to the Triple Threat Revue and a version of the T-Birds that featured Lou Ann Barton, SRV, and Jimmy Lee in the late 70's. A really great addition to the collectoin.

5 out of 5 stars don't be scared.......2006-01-18

This is the best and bluesiest of T-Birds cds. What I enjoy most is the absence of any second guitar or keyboard, or rather, the way these guys play without those 'extra' instruments: No fear. The space is beautiful, and when it's right, (and it is), there's nothing better than a bent note just sitting out in the air by itself.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Thunderbirds "Girls Go Wild".......2005-04-05

Ask any working professional blues guitarist or any other blues musician, including his younger brother Stevie Ray Vaughan, and he will probably say that Jimmie Vaughan is one of the greatest blues guitarists of the last 40 years, perhaps longer. Vaughan probably had as much of an impact with this, the Fab T'Birds first album, as Eric Clapton had back in 1966 with John Mayall (The Beano Album). In effect, Jimmie Vaughan helped convert millions of guitar wanking/noodling blooze players (myself included!) into more serious rootsy players. He succeeded in distilling Jimmie Reed, Jimmie Rogers, T-Bone Walker,, a young B.B. King, Lightning Hopkins, Slim Harpo, John Lee Hooker, and several others into an unbeatable blend-- himself. Problem is (well it isn't really a problem)-- there is only one Jimmie Vaughan, meaning that he is the original and can never be duplicated, let alone imitated. Nobody in recent memory has been able to "tell a story" with every solo the way he has. (This is no doubt the reason Stevie Ray considered his older brother Jimmie the better player.) As a rhythm player nobody has come close. Believe me, many have tried. Seeing him play live was overwhelming. And that's just the guitar player on this debut!

Kim Wilson has been and remains the most sought after harp player in the world, and he is a complete master of every style from Little Walter to Sonny Boy Williamson-- whether he's blowing through a Green Bullet or a regular mike. On this album he does an excellent job of singing in a vocal range of styles from BB King to Lazy Lester, but retains his own identity throughout.

Keith Ferguson? The tone he gets from that Fender Telecaster bass is monstrous, enveloping, profound-- but it is his sense of swing and groove, and his ears that set his playing head and shoulders above other blues bassists.

Finally there is Mike Buck on drums. Somebody else has written a review here saying that this is "the Shuffles album" for drummers. Two-fisted rub-shuffles to be exact.

The album's greatness is due in no small part to the fact that each of the four musicians offers an eternal lesson-- a clinic-- in how the blues should be played-- with deep focus, deep restraint, deep tension, deep communication-- the result of which is an incredibly erotic ferment-- no wonder it is called "Girls Go Wild"! But for students of the blues, it offers instruction and inspiration for individual instrumentation and ensemble playing. It creates an atmosphere that lends continuity to the entire album.

Among their fans were Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Ronnie Earl and the Roomful of Blues band, and even Jackson Browne!

You can imagine that the Fabulous Thunderbirds' "Girls Go Wild," similar to the Beatles' "Please Please Me" first album and John Mayall/Eric Clapton Bluesbreakers' "Beano," were itching to lay down their best club material on tape, and to my ears the results are in their own way just as astonishing.

One never tires of hearing this timeless document.

A final piece of advice-- play it LOUD!

5 out of 5 stars Oh My God, I can't Go To Work!.......2004-02-19

We just unwrapped this CD - It's 6 AM on Guam, the Sun is climbing out of the Pacific, and the T-Birds are shaking the house. I can't leave until it's done- it's THAT good. In fact, I may just have to call in sick and spin it some more. Buy it, try it. You'll like it. I promise.

1 out of 5 stars Madacy Sucks.......2006-07-28

One star minus one star=zero stars!
Buyer beware. Madacy sells the bottom of the barrel product. Bad remakes (90% of the tracks) and poorly mastered originals (the remainder). Waste of money unless you want new versions of classic records. Just note: even then, they aren't very good.
The worst part of this company and their marketing is they lead you to think you are buying original recordings.
Don't waste your money...

1 out of 5 stars Trashy Re-Make - Beware!!.......2005-01-13

There is not even one original song by the original artist on this CD. Maybe that's the reason it's so inexpensive. It consists of updated versions, admittedly by the original artists, or at least parts of their groups. Frankly, I'm surprised that an organization as reputable as amazon.ca would offer them for sale without a warning to unsuspecting customers. As a person who knows rock'n'rock history, particularly the '50's and '60s, modesty side, I would place more value on the jewel box in which this CD, and others like it, are packaged than the CD's themselves. The only reason I rated it "1" is that the option of "0" isn't available.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-01-13

These CD's rock. There is not a reason out there, for you not to own these. If Superman enjoys this music, you will also.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2000-07-07

I was not expecting this set to be of non-original recordings and was disappointed that it wasn't mentioned in any part of the ad. Some of the tracks are pretty good, but I was expecting originals.

1 out of 5 stars Canadian Sunset.......2000-04-03

Don't buy anything on this label. Ever. Only 2 minor flaws - they are either not the original recording (alternate tracks or rerecordings)or the correct track was mastered from a record fulminating in your Aunt Gertrude's closet for the past 30 years.
