Album Description
Former Tristania mastermind, Morten Veland returns with another ingenious album while bringing a fresh sound into the rock and gothic scene. The epic songs and symphonic arrangements on An Elixir for Existence surpasses the high standard set with his striking debut At Sixes and Sevens. Terje Refnes' elegant Sound Suite production provides charm throughout without taking away from its heaviness.Customer Reviews:
Lovely Album.......2007-03-28
Lacuna Coil doesnt have anything on Sirenia! (4.3 stars).......2006-07-05
This album is exactly what you would be looking for in a Gothic Metal band. Good, growly Black Metal vocals coming from a male, and a sweet symphonic angels voice coming from a beautiful female singer, along with some good guitar riffs and cool yet relaxing electronic, keyboard, and piano sounds. Theres even some violin play in the songs!!!
The only thing bothering me about this album is the structure of all the songs go in the same pattern. Growly vocals, then clear. Or growly, clear, growly, clear. The songs become predictable in that vocal sense. But in every other aspect this album is a fine example of todays Gothic Metal. I strongly reccommend it.
Suck it up Lacuna Coil. You lose.
DAMN!!.......2005-10-18
THE SIREN'S SONG.......2005-07-31
Not so!
Fortunately I read the Amazon reviews before I bought it, so I didn't get misled. I was hoping for a female-lead for this group, since that's what it looked like at first, but I also don't mind growling every now and then. And to Morten Veland's credit, he growls his lyrics coherently. I've seen too many bands with lyrics written down and then when they sing them it's like "agjalghuahjühahg!!!"
As for the female singer, she only sings about two or four lines per song, even if she gets a song all to herself (Save Me From Myself). She's not bad, but she can't compare to Tarja from Nightwish or Sharon from Within Temptation.
There are only three songs on this CD that I liked: "Lithium and a Lover" has great, catchy background music and good lyrics, male growling, female singing, and a choir. This one is my favorite.
"In My Darkest Hour" has some great guitar work at the beginning and they repeat it about halfway through the song.
"The Fall Within" has background music that sounds almost exactly like that from "Lithium and a Lover", but of course I liked that track so much that more of the same doesn't really hurt.
And that is where my main complaint with this CD lies. I got that annoying sense of Deja Vu when I listened to the background music on several of the songs. They started to sound the same, some of them. And the other songs were not up to my standards. I do appreciate though that they have a purely instrumental piece at the end. Not a very good one, but at least they tried.
If you like growling, the groups that I like to listen to and consider my standards are: Finntroll, Einherjer, and Within Temptation. If you like female vocals more than you should try: Nightwish, Evanescence, and Within Temptation.
Overall, this CD is not all bad. It's convinced me to give their earlier album a try and I'll look forward to their future projects and maybe you will, too.
Another great Gothic/Death metal band........2005-04-17

Don't be fooled, this is REAL HIP HOP.......2005-08-20
The album starts with, "When Mightnight Sighs". The first time I listened to this song I was in the car and I found myself singing along by the time the chorus came around.
The second song "So on & so on" was basically an all singing song, but I really enjoyed this one, because the vocals were delivered very quickly.
Next comes Plastic. This is straight up hip hop. Prince Be comes with the power of Chuck D ready to tell people how he feels about the negative attention the hip hop community has given them. (that's how I saw it)
The production/music on Ways of the Wind is very beautiful. Crazy ass bassline too. I must say the production/music on this album is on point. It's close, if not as good as the first album.
Next comes, "To Love Me More". I am not a a big fan of the slow singing songs, but when they are put around a bunch of upbeat songs with rapping, it has a good balance and you appreciate them a lot more. I think this song is fun and keeps things versitile.
One of my favorites "About Nothing for the Love of Destiny". This song is great. The music is top notch and the chorus is simply amazing. The sarcasm (i hope) in the chorus is great. "I like the way you change your looks, I like the way you change your style..I like the way you talk about nothing". I LOVE the little synth SOLO. I LOVE IT!! haha.
The cover of the Beatles "Norwegian Wood" was actually pulled off reallly well. The drums are straight up boom bap. Not a big fan of covers unless they cross music boundries, and this one definately does.
"Beyond Infinite Affections" is straight up hip hop once again. I don't know how P.M. Dawn could get any backlash from the hip hop community when they make songs like this. It's better than the majority of hip hop.
"Looking through Patient Eyes" sounds like Set Adrift Part 2. heh. Nice mellow song.
"Filthy Rich, I don't wanna be". I love the lyrics in the verses, not a big fan of the chorus though.
"More than Likely" is my least favorite song on the album. It's a duet with some guy and it really sounds like he needs to CLEAR his throat. It sounds very mucas filled, at one point you can hear it try to clear itself. Eek.
"The Nocturnal is in the house". Another banging hip hop track. nuff said. Coming battle style, whatever happened to that??
"When it's Raining Cats and Dogs" not a big fan of this one.
"I'd Die Without You". I used to hate this song when I was little when it used to come on the radio. I was still in elementry school at the time. I hated all the R & B songs cuz I had to sit through them to get to some hip hop songs, and this was one of them. I had no clue it was P.M. Dawn until I bought this album. I guess I like it now proably cuz I recognize it. heh.
All in all, it's nearly as good as the first album. I still like the first a smidget better, but not by much. This album KILLS 99 percent of all albums out there.

Now, to the review:
Is it the sex pistols? no. ramones? no. dead kennedys? no. But is it punk: Yes. Ever heard of the descendents? They rocked, and were possibly one of the most influential punk bands ever. If I had to compare this album to someone, it would be the descendents. While this album may, at some points, seem to venture into pop-punk, it's some of the best pop-punk yet.
Sure, the recording quality sucks, but that just adds to the awesome feel of this album. The band occassionaly messes up vocally and instrumentally, which makes the album feel very natural. Plus, blink had their own identity at this point, so they weren't exactly like every punk band out there. The songs move along at an awesome pace, with very little space between each track.
However, the album could have been a bit more agressive. It seemed like their singing was kinda held back at some points. Some songs could've gone faster, too. But, all in all, it's a good punk album.

Album Description
The fifth album from this revered Norwegian black metal act which features the talents of Galder and Nicholas Barker of Dimmu Borgir. 9 tracks. Century Media. 2003.Customer Reviews:
It doesn't get much better than this.......2006-12-06
Like all great melodic black metal, "In Defiance Of Existence" has several pretty, tranquil parts, but it's first and foremost brutal. The heavy parts feature Galder spewing his venomous, kind of snarly vocals over cold, opaque soundscapes of fiery guitars and ultra fast double kick drumming.
But this album also has a lot of great, very refined texture and variety because several of these songs subtly slip in a touch of moody keyboards and/or acoustic guitars. And OMC aren't like some dark metal bands who either make a song completely melodic or completely heavy (with no middle ground), because many of these tracks, like "Agony Of Fallen Grace" (which has a walloping, machine gun rhythm but also includes some spacey synths), are brutal and ambient at the same time.
The record's best song might be "Black Seeds On Virgin Soil." After a melodic intro, a surging, whiplash onslaught made up of a hurricane of guitar riffs and extremely busy double bass work bursts onto the scene. Similarly, "The Soul Receiver" begins with the sounds of a symphony, but then catapults into a heavily churning, pummeling rhythm. Track seven, "In Quest Of Enigmatic Dreams," is an interlude consisting of a very pretty string arrangement, but the album goes out with a bang: "The Underworld Domains" and "Life Deprived" are both scorchers, bursting with thrashy, scalding riffs and ultra-fast, skull-cracking blast beats.
It's a shame that Dimmu's "Death Cult Armageddon" and "In Defiance Of Existence" came out the same year because when someone releases an album from both of his projects, the side project will probably always be overshadowed by the main one. Thus this disc is sometimes overlooked due to DB's bigger, wider selling, and all around better release. But, regardless, OMC is as good as any melodic/symphonic black metal group on the market today, and "IDOE" is easily one of the genre's finest releases of the past several years.
Absolute Brilliance.......2006-06-24
maybe their best.......2006-04-08
Felonies Of The Christian Art- 8.4 Fantastic opening song. Its a typical OMC song done well. I particularly enjoy the swirling soloing between 3:14 and 3:40. Although the rest of the song is just as good.
Agony Of Fallen Grace-10+ It gets a 10+ because it might be my favorite OMC song ever. Although it does have much competition. The guitar section between 1:20 and 1:37 is especially noteworthy. It encompasses such emotion and sorrow yet beauty and grace as well. Thank god it shows up again toward the end of the song although it could have probably been made into an entire song itself. Also the drums of Nick Barker bring this song to life with a fury I havent felt in earlier OMC cds.
Black Seeds On Virgin Soil-8.2 Not as good as the previous two but hardly a letdown. OMC just dont have any filler songs. Everything has its own place on the cd. This starts out with some acoustic guitar but than bust loose into black metal intensity. Good variety of guitar in this song.
In Defiance Of Existence- 8.7 It opens with guitars and drums that evoke images of splashing waves on rocky norwegian fjords. Than Nick kicks a$$ with some double bass. Overall many fine riffs, melodies and blastbeats.
Sacrifice Of Vengeance- 9 Dont let the tranquill accoustic opening fool you. This is OMc not John Denver. 20 seconds in the riffs begin with a vengence. Nicks Drums are so good you can almost feel his sticks stinging your flesh. Thats a small sacrifice to pay to have the hellish pleasure of hearing this viking vengence. At 3:27 to 3:50 there is a magnificant seering, squawking sounding solo that blows my mind away.
The Soul Receiver 10 Awsome. Reminds me of old Dimmu. This experiance is all about the melody and the melody is good. This is a fitting anthem to the raping, pilaging reapers that once were the terrors of northern europe. Hail the vikings!
In Quest Of Enigmatic Dreams-7.5 Even the vikings needed some tranquility I guess. Pretty acoustic interlude.
The Underworld Domains-9 If in quest of enigmatic dreams was tranquil than this is a nightmare. Maybe the hardest song here or maybe not. Either way this is the underworld so what do you expect.
Life Deprived-9.5 The drums are so cool on this one combined with the buzzsaw riffs and some well placed solos. I get this mechanical impression with this one. Very hard song. A violent end yes, but what do you expect with a title like In defiance of Existance.
now this album rocks!!.......2006-03-06

1999 debut by hard-edged metal band featuring ex-Death members Chuck Schuldiner and Steve DiGiorgio, along with vocalist Tim Aymar. Compared to Death with cleaner, smoother vocals. Eight tracks.Customer Reviews:
WOW.......2006-08-23
This album is much more in the vein of power or prog metal than death metal and the tempos can be slightly slower than before, but some of Chuck's best compositions are found here. 'Expect The Unexpected' is a definite masterpiece worthy of Chuck. Tim Aymar's voice is a nice change, sounding at times like Bruce Dickinson, though he cannot hit nearly the same high notes. This album will be an improvement for Death fans who detest Chuck's voice (though I think it's not half-bad...would you rather have Chris Barnes? or the guy from Obituary? I think not!) In summation, pick this album up is you are a Death fan, techinical metal fan, or have ever heard DiGiorgio. He really shines on this album. Hopefully Chuck's mom's lawsuit will free up the release of the second album, which the other members support. Enjoy!
If your a fan of Death..........2006-07-31
Basically a collection of riffs from ex-Death members.......2005-07-13
This album is basically a collection of really cool riffs that somehow were not worked into song format very well. For example, in the song "Expect the Unexpected" it starts out with a cool intro and then a great verse which right as you're getting into BOOM, they change to another riffs. As you're finally getting into the chorus yet AGAIN, another change-up. These guys must have forgot that part of the art of music is finding a cool riff (which they have done well) and knowing how long you can use it for (another important detail) before it becomes old.
All the instruments are cool, especially the guitars and bass (DiGiorgio is THE MAN when it comes to bass). The vocals are incredibly annoyning in that kind of old-school Power Metal variety. They actually found someone worse than Chuck to replace Chuck -Wow, that just makes a ton of sense guys. Because of the cryptic/weird nature of the lyrics I'm going to assume Schuldiner wrote the lyrics.
Still worth checking out especially if you can find this one the cheap. Rather ironic title for the album too, huh?
(Goes without saying: R.I.P. Chuck)
"Individual thoughts that have come missing...".......2005-02-08
Shannon Hamm shares the guitar duties with Chuck, often playing cutting thrash-based riffs that sharply contrast Chuck's ethereal and textural playing which often spiral into crushing metal riffage during the solos and mid-sections of the tunes. Both guitarists interlock thrashy riffs alongside some curious tremelo picking and even add some plucked acoustic guitars ("When the Link Becomes Missing") which are later embraced by a forceful, melodic metal drive. The solo in this song is possibly my favourite on the album together with Chuck's textural playing in the closing track. It's a solo that builds up very slowly and becomes this intense, passionate expression towards the end -- it simply sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it. Steve DiGiorgio and Richard Christy continue to be an unmatchable duo in thrash/death metal driven music as DiGiorgio plays fat bass figures as well as interesting funky melodies, as in the intro of "What If ...?", and works his bass as an independent instrument throughout the whole album. Richard Christy is a great fit for this type of music, though I feel his snare sound gets a little muffled in some parts because of the mix, but he proves to be the perfect drummer for Control Denied in the way he exhibits powerful synchopated rhythms and technically impossible drum fills.
What makes The Fragile Art of Existence so great, in my opinion, is that it consists of only eight tracks and has a total running time of 50 minutes. There are no fillers here; each song is compositionally-strong, graced by brilliant musicianship and a fitting production (by Chuck and Jim Morris). The progressive side explored on Death's last album, The Sound of Perseverance, is even more boldly carried over to this album, particularly in the multi-textured "Expect the Unexpected", which not only has a great vocal melody, but also features various harmony changes. The centrepieces of the album, "What If ....?" and "When the Link Becomes Missing" are both thrash-rooted progressive songs in the way that allow Chuck to play textural guitars that fiercely contrast the otherwise heavy music, mainly driven by Hamm and DiGiorgio. This is further explored in the almost 10-minute epic, "The Fragile Art of Existence", which is Chuck's testament to stylistic cohesion and passionate songwriting. Three minutes into the song, Aymar coldly utters the words "NO TIME FOR SELF-PITY" and the textured guitar riffs are suddenly replaced by tasty guitar shred before giving way to the initial atmospheric guitar themes.
Chuck's lyrics on this one are perhaps his most introspective and personal lyrics (hence he chose a different project that would separate his musical vision from Death) and Travis Smith comes up with a very fitting artwork. The album is mixed, engineered and mastered by Jim Morris and co-produced by Chuck himself. If you're a metal fan, be it thrash, heavy or prog, and don't own this, then your collection is incomplete.
Pieces don't quite fit, but still quite good. 7/10.......2005-01-08
For 'The Fragile Art of Existence' Chuck Schuldiner assembled what is arguably the greatest metal lineup ever. Schuldiner is my favorite lead guitarist and perhaps my favorite rhythm guitarist as well, and Shannon Hamm is not far behind. Steve DiGiorgio is probably my favorite bassist other than Sean Malone, and Richard Christy is definitely one of the very best metal drummers ever. Of course, each of the last 4 Death albums were filled by amazing musicians, so this is to be expected. However, they don't give their best performances. Schuldiner's leads aren't as good as most of his latter era work, and Hamm's are not as good as he was on the previous album. They're generally a bit too formless, not as melodic and grounded as the SoP work. Still, they're very good from an absolute perspective. Christy's drums are quite a bit more restrained than usual. I guess this fits the material better, but the drumwork is still less interesting in and of itself. DiGiorgio is as good as ever, however, and is given a particularly prominent role. Tim Aymar is the only new guy, and he does a good job. He's a fairly standard classic metal singer-screecher, and while he's not particularly distinctive, he's more than capable.
So, we have a great lineup here, headed by the best metal songwriter ever, but only a 4 star album. It's got some basic tonal problems which really hurt the album. The problem is, Chuck sacrificed some of Death's strengths while not gaining much in return. Though this is a very, very complex album with tons of riffs and tempo changes and whatnot, it's quite a bit more controlled and restrained sounding than your average Death album, lacking either the unrelenting speed of Human or the 80's albums, or the unhinged wildness of 'Sound of Perseverance'. The production is less intense as well, with a lighter guitar tone and less intense drum sounds. All this was done, presumably, to fit in with the clean, melodic vocals. However, the album still doesn't play to the strengths of power/classic metal. It's a very, very solemn affair, never achieving the sort of epic feeling or grandiosity of good power metal, and isn't really anymore melodic than Death's later material.(Which was plenty melodic for tech-death-thrash, but insufficient for tech-power-thrash like this) Aymar is largely quite restrained, an operatic vocalist chained by a serious, straight laced tone. So, this all comes together to say that the album as a whole is fairly lacking in visceral intensity or emotional resonance. It's both technically impressive and intriguing, but it generally doesn't have enough punch or heart. Chuck tried to combine his style with classic metal and came to a compromise that wasn't really satisfactory for either side. That, and the riffs, solos and choruses and all that stuff just aren't as good as they usually are in Death's work. though their relative weakness is doubtless related to the basic stylistic problem of the album.
I know I'm attacking this album a lot, but that's mainly because it's problems are so very clear. It's still a good album, with 2 flat-out great songs, and the rest are certainly nowhere near bad.(though they aren't terribly close to great either.) 'Consumed' is the opener. It's a brilliant song, perfectly constructed, and with more emotional resonance than any other track on the album. The main verse riff and chorus are both great, immediately memorable and really quite sad sounding. The intro and middle break are quite sweet too, and the song has some of the best leadwork on the album. 'Breaking the Broken' is the second track, as well as the second best track. Best chorus on the album, with some fine shrieking from Aymar. It's the only chorus on the album that achieves that sort of grandiosity befitting a vocalist of his nature. Furthermore, it's got some of the very best basswork on the album. Another great song. However, I don't have all that much to say about the rest of the album. There are plenty of interesting riffs, and good leads, but damned if anything on the rest of the album really reaches out and grabs you. 'Cut Down' kinda does, with it's rather angry chorus, as do parts of 'Believe' but that's about it. It's interesting music, but on an almost entirely intellectual level. Not enough melody to be that memorable, and not heavy or punchy enough to rock at optimum efficiency.
All that said, I definitely recommend this to any fans of latter-era Death, provided they aren't wholeheartedly opposed to classic metal singing. It's nowhere near the best thing Chuck did, but it's interesting as a whole, and has some truly brilliant moments.

On an initial listen to Pass out of Existence, Chimaira sometimes bear the hallmarks of being little more than a copycat band following along in the scorched-earth wake of the mighty Slipknot. Still, there's much evidence that Chimaira have arrived at this point as much through innovation as imitation. The six-man metal crew's debut is built around a bludgeoning old-school thrash-metal dynamic, jackhammer drumming, primal-scream lyrics, and brutally applied electronic loops. "Dead Inside" marries its powerhouse chorus to spacious, Tool-like passages and bursts of industrial wizardry, while the sinister "Abeo" proves that for all Chimaira's passion for extreme metal, they're far more than one-trick ponies. Slipknot fans will find much to enjoy here, notably the supertight, percussion-heavy "Painting the White to Grey" and the epic, tortured 12-minute closer, "Jade." --Louis PattisonCustomer Reviews:
Awesome album.......2007-05-28
A good starting point..........2007-02-02
Nu Metal that brings nothing new to the table.......2007-01-24
Good but not great..........2006-10-03
DECENT , but a bit repetitive .......2006-05-02
Howevere, overall album lacks variety and has a lot of boring guitar riffs and dull musicanship.
Just listen to their later work: Self titled Chimaira.
It is much more interesting!
This one is ok, still has some brutal stuff!
