About the Artist
"2Spot", while sounding very much like a full band, in reality are just two people; Bob Fredricks and Rich Hayes. The duo first began working together 30 years ago, playing in rock groups performing around the New York area. They achieved a modest level of success (translate as: paid their bills and made somewhat of a living),but were unable to realize their dream of producing their own album. That is until fate stepped in and reunited the pair in the mid '90's. Fate, with the assistance of technology, allowed them to write and produce their own cd. The result is "THEODORE", a 12 song cd completed in August of 2000. On it Rich & Bob explore the psyche of a "survivor" and his journey; often humorous, sometimes sad, and most certainly bizarre! The music is a journey as well, reflecting the many influeneces that have molded the two throughout their careers. Music styles range from the straight ahead beat of "Janet (From Another Planet" to the latin dance feel of "Salsa Libido" and "Spanish Lace", the dreamlike "post psychedelic" feel of "Flying Away" ,to the rockabily/surf sounds of "Naked Lobster". Catchy melodies, strong harmonies, edgy guitar... and a few good laughs-they're all in there!

Paul McCartney's new "classical" oratorio is called Ecce Cor Meum, which translates as "Behold My Heart." The idealistic texts, also by McCartney, are meditations on goodness, spirituality, peace, and love, and are well served by the pretty, Romantic melodies; the long choral and orchestral sections flow one into the next. The Interlude (composed after the death of his wife, Linda), with its lovely oboe solo, is simple and moving. The music builds throughout to an emotional climax and the entrance of the organ later in the work--beautifully played and handsomely recorded--is quite remarkable. This is a far more advanced work than 1991's Liverpool Oratorio: better orchestrated, more through-composed. No, it's not the last word in compositional sophistication, but it has many beautiful moments, and McCartney's legions of fans will need to own it. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
"Ecce" Misses the Mark.......2007-06-12
My old harmony teacher once remarked, "You can't throw away the rules unless you know which rules you're throwing away. Not surprisingliy, this is the case with "Ecce Cor Meum." When tunesmithing, most writing is done intuitively. In other words, the "how" of it comes from exposure to countless examples of popular/rock music. It's done by osmosis and most (but by no means all) pop tunes are tweaked into existence.
In the case of "serious" music, though, it is like any work of art. It is done by understanding the medium and understanding the progress of the art itself.
McCartney's attempt at a serious work falls short in most every respect. It is dull and colorless with occasional tender moments. An extended passage involving the oboe was particularly poignant. Otherwise the repetitiveness of the work makes for rather difficult sustained listening.
In his program notes, the composer seemed to think that lack of formal training in music, even with notation, was an asset rather than a liability. We beg to differ. The understanding of the dynamics of harmony, rhythm and melody in the course of a large work is as important to the composer as color and its use is to a painter.
Having to write 40-45 minutes of orchestral and choral music is a whole lot different than 32 bars of, say, "Michelle" or "Will You Still Love Me When I'm 64?" (Which of course we always will, Paul!)
Even a master composer like George Gershwin was limited, albeit much more successful, in his attempts at larger works. That said, there is hope of McCartney. I'd like to see more from his pen.
Music of the Angels.......2007-02-25
Paul did an excellent job on this beautiful music and I do not say that because I am a fan. I love classical music, I put classical on to calm my nerves or to bring myself closer to the powers that be. This is excellent stuff. I will listen to this CD the rest of my life. I only have about 5 of those lifetime titles, this is one of them.
Disappointing.......2007-02-08
When I was in my teens, I couldn't get enough McCartney. With truly memorable 5-minute songs he was in his element. Having said that, it took a lot of effort to listen to the entire Ecce cor Meum. McCartney does not have the discipline or know-how that it takes to write a larger work. It is fragmented, repetitive, and unremarkable, and he is clearly out of his depth with it. Now that he's been there, done that, it's time to return to the work for which he is justly famous.
Not the Beatles!.......2007-01-16
Classical with a twist. Listen with an open mind and open ears. Interesting...you have to admire the craftsmanship of this piece. Very well done.
Ecce Cor Meum.......2007-01-12
Ecce Cor Meum is latin for "Behold my Heart". McCarthey has poured his spiritual philosophy and his heart into this music. He has stepped beyond the "short story" of the classic "Beatles" to the "novel" of an hour long creation. A classical orchestra, incredible soprano, and my favorite- a British Boys Choir, make this music that will inspire all. You will hear the clear beckoning of a lone trumpet, the melancholy of an oboe, the boom of drums, and the lilting melody of violins. It is music that gets better each time you listen.

The best Latin music I've heard.......2006-04-18
The music in this CD is done beautifully! If features "Panis Angelicus", which if you like Charlotte Church singing it, you will like this- with a man's voice! There is no goofy revisions and modernization done to the music that I can tell. (I only say that in case some smart 15th century music history scholar comes around and disagrees!) It is very peaceful and will help anyone to calm down and give thanks to God. I think because the music is in Latin you will not grow tired of it as easily, and not to mention the fact that this music will continue to inspire you and put you in the presence of Christ better. OHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! How I wish we were singing this sort of Latin music instead of "All our Welcome" and "Sing a new Church"! Let's keep the same Church Christ established thank you! And let's keep the Latin!!!!!!!
60's and the Latin Mass.......2006-03-15
I am one of those 60s people. We did not throw out the Latin mass. Why would we? We liked it. I served most of the high masses of the holidays. It was a small cabal of newly ordained priests and bishops in the Vatican II committees who threw it out. They wanted to be more like their Protestant bretheren; have the congregation face them instead of God. Read the book MISSING MARY while you are listening to this CD. They threw her out at the same time; no women in high places - their answer to the feminists of the 60s.
Latinlover.......2005-12-18
As a devoted lover of Catholic Latin hymns, I was disappointed at the enemic presentation of these beautiful hymns to God. I believe that the singers had the best of intentions but I would suggest to look for other versions of these wonderful songs to heaven.

Most of the civilized world identifies this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic with the Robert Wise film, one of the most successful movie musicals of all time ("The Sound of Money," critic Pauline Kael termed it). Which is why this recording can be so disconcerting. Not only are there different tunes ("How Can Love Survive," "Laendler," "No Way to Stop It," but no "Confidence" or "Something Good," both written for the film), but Captain Von Trapp is played by heavyset folksinger Theodore Bikel, a far cry from young Christopher Plummer. Mary Martin was not only much older than the film's Julie Andrews, she wasn't even British! Then again, neither was the real Maria--and the stage version is, in many ways, more faithful to the Von Trapp Family Singers' true story. --Bill Holdship

Musical........2007-03-03
This is the original version of The Sound of Music starring Mary Martin.. She does a wonderful job, I especially like the Lonely Goatherd.
A real difference from the Julie Andrews version. With extra songs left out of the film and one changed song. I thrououghly recommend this title.
rosielyn.......2007-01-13
This is the Sound of Music of my childhood. I never saw the show, but the music was all over when I was growing up. I have seen the movie many times, and went on the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg recently. So I got the original soundtrack. The movie is wonderful, but the music from the stage musical is much better. For one thing, they got the singers for their musical ability. No offense to Julie Andrews, a great actor and singer, but the music was written for Mary Martin, and it does show. The stage show did not have the benfit of the scenery of the movie, so the music in the stage show makes up for that. It's more about music, and less an accompaniment to the beautiful scenery around Salzburg. So watch the movie, and listen to this soundtrack
Mary Martin in THE SOUND OF MUSIC.......2007-01-11
Although the recording techniques were not as advanced as today, this recording is a wonderful reproduction of the original version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. The digital sizzle of today's recordings is missing---but it sure beats vinyl. It's hard to believe that the first time audiences heard this music was not Julie Andrews in the 1956 movie version. Mary Martin was considered one of the musical theatre's first ladies and for students and fans of the art form, hearing her unique approach to the music should be very enlightening. Since Oscar Hammerstein died in 1960, one can assume that he had a good deal of input into the production of this recording. In effect we are listening to the musical, as the creators wanted us to hear it.
Movie Sountrack More Enjoyable.......2006-10-24
I have always considered myself a true music theatre buff, but never had the chance to listen to this soundtrack in it's entirety until recently.I love Rodgers and Hammerstein without a doubt and the movie musical is classic. I must say I like it considerably better than this original soundrack though, which for me is a rarity. The tempos drag and take away from some of the playfullness of its more popular numbers like Do-Re-Mi. The children do a wonderful job of keeping the energy up through all of their numbers though which distracts from that fact. My biggest complaint with the show though has to be Mary Martin. Her voice is a little too mature and the constant sliding into each and every note she sings is enough to give someone motion sickness. I envision the reverend mother as the children's governess every time she opens her mouth. There is no character or life to her delivery which makes each of her songs almost a chore to listen to. If I didn't have to refer to this soundtrack repeatedly when I choreographed the show, I would have probably discarded it and stuck to the movie soundtrack. That is the problem sometimes with making these shows into movies sometimes though. The deviation from the original can cause little nuances and details to change making it hard to have an honest opinion on one or the other. In my opinion, and that's all that it is, the movie soundrack captures the music much more vibrantly and for entertainment and listening pleasure is the more enjoyable of the two.
MARY MARTIN FOREVER.......2006-01-08
O dear!... we're way within the second millenium and..... what more would anyone of us fans of the `musicals' have to add of this OBC album.... after regarding the famous publicity shot of the trio: R. Rodgers, Oscar II and postulant-nun-clad Mary Martin hopping happily ever-after, as light as bird from brier, on the way to their Banks, after the hounds of Münich plagued... I mean `The Sound Of Music' played on Broadway for 1443 performances?
Following the Lunt-Fontanne and the Mark Hellinger Theater runs, we all know so well what happened: IN came the 1965 mamoth-blockbuster film starring First Soprano Assoluta Ms Julie Andrews, directed and supported by Robby Wise and Chris Plummer... aaah, and featuring the ageing, all the more gorgeous-- wishing she had a mouth organ to play-- Eleanor Parker.
"Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Every morning you greet me
Small and white, clean and bright
You look happy to meet me"
(How can we EVER forget Chris Plummer's lovely, lovely inferior lip as he strummed his quaint guitar and lipsinked to this cutie, Alpine song...aaaw!)
Little to add; as we all remember, Andrews finally got her big break into movies via Poppins, Disney, co-star Dick Van Dike et al; she could then stick a stiff tongue out to Audrey Hepburn and she became (almost) every `musical' fan's daaaaarling.....Mary Pickford had preceded Dame Andrews in our granny's hearts, although Pickford --or granny-- could have never prevised Andrew's prodigious DICTION!. Anyway... what about `darling' Mary Martin... (Dallas' JR's mother, didn't you know by now??? )
What might be so laudatory about the 1959 Original Broadway Cast Album of your favourite musical movie? Robert Russel Bennet's orchestrations? Recording producer Goddard Lieberson???? (Who were THEY???) Yeah, I know:.... Mary Martin was too old to play the part of Maria.... Sure! So was Bernhard when she played L'Aiglon (and so was Tennesee's-Vivien Mrs. Stone `too old to play Rosalind' --said Coral Brown). But what about Mary Martin's voice, the awesome brivato, the delivery, the heartfelt every-Do-Re-Mi-notes she sang..... Who can beat her Sixteen-Goin-On-Seventeen-reprise number, or her `An Ordinary Couple torch song? Wwwweeeell.... mmmmm..... just listen to track 2; the title song... That's it, in a nutshell.

Album Description
The process of choosing music for a wedding day can certainly be a daunting process for any couple. There are many choices and the questions can be endless. Traditional music or something off the beaten path? Will your Mom cry (and not in a good way) if you do not come down the aisle to the traditional Wedding March from Wagner, or are you eager to try something new? This collection is designed to give the bridal couple some key pointers to navigate the world of classical music for their wedding day. The package includes over 3 1/2 hours of music on 3 CDs for all portions of the wedding service, all from the Naxos classical label (known for high-quality recordings at inexpensive prices). Wedding day favorites are there, along with new discoveries and tunes you may have never considered for a wedding. All pieces are hand selected by professional wedding musicians and consultants. As a bonus, the 20 page booklet will lead you through the process of choosing music, from hiring musicians to sample programs. Everything you need to create your own unique personal wedding soundtrack.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT WEDDING MUSIC!.......2007-01-24
I used these CD's for my wedding, and I was so happy I did. You need to buy this CD if you like having a traditional wedding! :)
Good Music.......2006-07-05
I bought these CDs for my wedding, in ceremony and reception. Also, when I created my own wedding video, I used it as background music.
A very complete selection of ceremony music!.......2005-02-02
I am getting married in several months and we couldn't decide what music we wanted at our wedding ceremony. This three disk compilation reminded us of all the great ones- including new options we hadn't thought about. I really enjoyed hearing the organ and strings versions of the songs. If you're someone who hears a classical or baroque piece of music, but can't remember the name or the precise tune, this is a must-have to jog your memory and trigger the tear ducts!
Comprehensive Classical Selection.......2004-04-15
I searched all over for a CD set that had a somewhat comprehensive list of classical selections that are traditionally played at weddings. When I found this 3 CD set, I was very pleased. It contains 61 works from almost as many composers. This set might not contain the "best recording ever" of each of the selections, however it is very well done and the quality is very good. I used it primarily to choose the pieces that I wanted to have played by the church organist, and so the actual recordings were more for my consumption rather than for use in the ceremony/reception itself. However, I would not have hestitated to use the CD's in the wedding itself if needed. The book inside includes a list of suggested songs for various wedding styles (formal, outside, morning, etc.). From the classical neophyte to the seasoned classical music expert, this CD set will meet if not exceed expectations.
Just one note..........2003-06-07
I have not heard this album, so I cannot rate it as a whole. (The form made me include a rating, but disregard that.) However, I want to point out that track 36, the Pie Jesu from Gabriel Faure's Requiem is - well, from a requiem, a mass for the dead. The Pie Jesu is a lovely, gentle movement, and it has a beautiful and pure sound that does seem to fit the mood of a wedding. The Latin words, however, mean "Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them everlasting rest," where "them" refers to the dead.
Beautiful, but perhaps not so suitable for a wedding.

Introduction to Russian 101.......2007-02-09
Growing up post-WWII, and in college and the military during the Cold War, I wanted to understand my "enemy", a the military demands. This album was part of my learning, and is just good music. Many pop and rockers will not be interested: their loss. Bikel took folk singing a step further, and even not understanding all the words (I took Russian in college), it has a good intro to the Russian "soul", from Ivan the Terrible to Putin.
A Great Double Album From Theodore Bikel.......2006-04-15
I have owned the LP of "Songs of a Russian Gypsy" since the early 60's, and it has always been a favorite. This record was a "breakthrough hit" for Elektra records in the early days (See "Follow The Music" by Jac Holzman and Gavan Daws).
"Songs of a Russian Gypsy" was re-issued as a CD by Bainbridge Records, in the 90's, but in limited numbers. When the supply dried up, only an uncertain "used" market remained, with prices quite variable. (see my review of the used CD).
This re-issue also includes another Bikel favorite, "Songs of Russia Old and New". Hopefully, more early Electra Albums will surface through the efforts of Collectors Choice Music!

Highly regarded recording of both the concerto and quintet.......2007-02-05
Record of the Year, Stereo Review:
"How musicologists have arrived at these reconstructions of the original versions of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet and Clarinet Concerto makes for fascinating reading in the notes to this CD, but what truly distinguishes the disc is the glowing performances it contains. Clarinetist David Shifrin approaches both works in the highest bel canto style, with a seamless, long-line legato enhanced by a velvety tone. Both the Chamber Music Northwest (in the quintet) and the Mostly Mozart Orchestra (in the concerto) follow his lead and imbue the performances with a mellowness that does not obscure the melancholy lying below the surface of these late mature works."
Richness, intensified.......2006-05-01
One need not be a musical lyricist to appreciate listening to Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and Clarinet Quintet. I must agree with a previous reviewer that, the compositions are indeed perfect. Remarkably enough, in this year of Mozart's 250th birthday, I have yet to hear these pieces once on any of the radio celebrations into which I have tuned.
Fortunately, however, I have a copy of the CD stowed in my car. And as my schedule requires long drives very often of late, I have listened to these masterpieces dozens of times within recent months. Each time I hear them, it's like meeting old friends. I discover new joys, find new meanings, and never grow tired of them.
As this is the only version of these works that I own, I can't compare the recording to any other rendition. But I have always loved the clarinet's richness and tone, and this music played on the extended range clarinet only adds to the instrument's magical quality. How could it not, therefore, add to the depth of the music, as well?
--Alyssa A. Lappen
Feedback of Mozart's CD.......2006-03-13
I received the article in good conditions in the beginning of last week.I've already listened to it several times and I'm pleased wirh its quality, both with the interpreters and the recording itself.

Mozart: Clarinet Concerto; Clarinet Quintet ~ Fred Sherry.......2005-10-08
Mozart: Clarinet Concerto; Clarinet Quintet~ Fred Sherry is a wonderfull recording of Mozarts clarinet music and when I listen to it I regret that I did not stick with one instrument during my youth since now it is just to late. But one can unfortunately not go back in the past and remedy old mistakes. Mozart was truly a genius that could write music for all kinds of instruments like the clarinet, violin, trumpet and many others. Mozart was able to create music that is easy on the ear and sounds easy to play. However he is truly a master of composition and well in league with greats such as Beethoven, Bach and Wagner. When you examine a sheet of music done by Mozart you truly realize the genius that was and is Mozart and this becomes quite clear whilst listening to his wonderfull compositions for the clarinet.
Shifrin's a superb rendition of Mozart's perfect composition.......2005-01-28
Notice that in any review of a recording of Mozart's clarinet works, the musicians are always criticized and critiqued, but there is no critic that even attempts to lay a finger on the compositions themselves, except when praising them. That is because, simply put, Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and Quintet are perfect. The Concerto, Mozart's most mature finished work (it was the last major composition that he completed before his death; the Requiem Mass was, of course, never finished), is absolutely sublime in its beautiful, lyrical phrasing and its use of the clarinet's full range. Every theme is fleshed out and expanded upon to its fullest, with a gorgeous, transcendent effect. The Quintet, composed several years earlier, sounds very similar to the concerto in many respects. The great Mozart scholar Alfred Einstein writes, "one almost has the impression that Mozart felt impelled to express again [in the concerto], in greater and dramatically animated form, what he had already expressed in more lyric form... in the Quintet." And lyric the quintet is; the strings and the clarinet play off of each other perfectly throughout, creating a harmonious blend of beautiful sound. Unlike other later clarinet works, such as those by C.M. Weber (I also highly recommend Shifrin's rendition of these), which dazzle with their huge dramatic sound and prolonged technical passages, these Mozart pieces are beautiful because of their simple and heartwarming nature.
Both the Concerto and the Quintet were composed by Mozart for his clarinetist friend Anton Stadler. Johann Friedrich Schink, a writer who attended one of Stadler's performances, wrote, "My thanks to you, brave Virtuoso! I have never heard the like of what you contrived with your instrument. Never should I have thought that a clarinet would be capable of imitating a human voice so deceptively as it was imitated by you. Verily, your instrument has so soft and lovely a tone that nobody can resist it who has a heart..." These words could just as easily be used to describe David Shifrin's performance on this recording. Playing with a smooth, beautiful tone and with a technique that makes everything sound so fluid and natural, he is certainly the star of this recording. Chamber Music Northwest (of which Shifrin is also the music director) is so wonderfully expressive and crisp in the Quintet. The Mostly Mozart Orchestra is also very fine, but perhaps not quite so good as the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. In all, however, I have not heard a better rendition of Mozart's perfect compositions. I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25
I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.
Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka
As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

Great.......2006-02-15
This music is great for both kids and adults. It is much nicer then the baby Einstein version. It is great to listen to and I often play it during my son's nap time.

This selection of Mozart's music is sure to be pleasing to baby whether in or out of the womb. This CD delivers some beautiful peices that are performed at a level that can be appreciated by parents as well as little ones. Do not, however, limit your personal collection of Mozart to this CD. There are many other works and performances to be explored!

Customer Reviews:
What a pleasant surprise!.......2006-03-09
It is always a very pleasant surprise to have one's expectations so notably exceeded. As to the composer, I confess to being a great fan of Shostakovich and here, he seized upon a little known and tragic story ("The Gadfly," by E.L. Voynich) which renders a first-rate account of people in revolution and a society in upheaval -- and the music that Shostakovich composed for the film in this instance is just that: revolutionary. I believe that he composed nothing finer in all his filmscores. This achievement is historic and the "Introduction (Prelude, track 7)" may, in fact, just be the finest piece of melodic Classical Music ever written. It has that perfect astonishing Russian blend of Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, Balakirev, Stravinsky and maybe even a little of Rachmaninoff! And that comment leads me to the rendition itself - I was astonished as to what a fine job the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine (Theodore Kuchar, conducting) did with this work. It is an historic achievement and I was very pleased at the quality of the sound on this CD (it's a DDD recording from 1995 at Kiev). The "Suite from Five Days -- Five Nights" (the second composition on this CD) is also a fine work and a perfect complement to "The Gadfly." My only reccommendation beyond what I have said so far would be to read the book as you listen to this recording which lends considerable enhancement to both media.
The Gadfly music - treasure unrevealed.......2005-10-22
Since I have only heard another recording on the score on the radio I won't go into the quality of the conductor/orchestra which in my ears sound pretty good. It's just that this music score (The Gadfly) is one of the treasure of soundtrack music and I wonder how it comes and is not played more often. Listening more carefully I picked some lines that reminded me of some Rota scores, one of my favourite soundtrack composers. This is great music and at this modest price everybody should listen to it.
A fine recording.......2003-09-30
I found the recording quality to be up to Naxos' standards. I listen to it on my laptop which has two small and inadequate speakers and the cd maintains its integrity.
Good CD.......2001-05-24
This is currently one of my favorite CD's. I admit I have not heard any other performances of the Gadfly Suite, but THIS one is good in any case. The violin and 'cello solos are well done, too. Also, the Gadfly Suite is generally considered to be among Shostakovich's better film scores.
Kucharw,s Gadfly Interpretation.......2000-03-13
Orchestration and recording does not do justice to this very lovely film score. It sounds tin like, rather dissapointing.

intriguing Broadway flop..........2006-09-23
A singing Sherlock Holmes? It happened in 1965 with BAKER STREET, the ill-fated, ill-conceived Broadway musical written by Marian Grudeff and Raymond Jessel, with book by Jerome Coopersmith. Taking as it's starting point the original "Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Bohemia" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the final product bore a closer similarity to a second-rate variation on "My Fair Lady", with Holmes and Watson accompanied by lovely singer Irene Adler, traipsing all over London, closely pursued by arch-enemy Professor Moriarty.
The one thing that BAKER STREET has in it's favour is a fabulous cast, including Shakespearean veteran Fritz Weaver as Sherlock Holmes, Martin Gabel as Moriarty, Peter Sallis as Watson and Inga Swenson as Irene.
Fresh from the national tour of "110 in the Shade", Inga Swenson shines with the lion's share of musical numbers, including "I'm in London Again" (cut shortly after the opening), "Letters" and "Finding Words for Spring". "I'd Do It Again" is the perfect 11 o'clock number. "Cold Clear World" is an ideal summation of the Holmes character, and Weaver delivers handsomely as well.
For all BAKER STREET's similarities to "My Fair Lady", Weaver and Swenson had the last laugh, when they were quite ironically reunited for the 1968 City Center revival. BAKER STREET also faced some competition from other musicals of the 1965 season ("Half a Sixpence", "Fade Out-Fade In" and "Golden Boy"), but gamely hobbled along for 313 performances at the Broadway Theatre, moving to the Martin Beck shortly before it closed.
Decca Broadway's CD premiere of the original cast album is crisply remastered. Bonus tracks comprise of Richard Burton's take on "A Married Man"; and Kai Winding's orchestra performing "Baker Street Mystery" (adapted from the "London Underground" sequence).
Necessary! Necessary! Necessary!.......2006-07-10
1. There were two Broadway shows that somehow unfairly did not get the "press & praise", or whatever, to get the attention of the theatre-going public to catch on and become smash hits.
2. Luckily for us, there were recordings of these two Broadway shows on lp.
3. Sadly, for those of us who enjoyed those old lp albums and wished and waited for years and years for them to be remastered to cds, it seemed we would never be able to enjoy these "lost" scores ever again.
4. Now, through some lucky stroke of unlikely chance, we have recently been twice blessed with the remastering and release of BOTH of them on compact disk! All I can say is "There IS a God!" and also "Thank You", "Thank You", "Thank You" to those responsible for the "saving" and "preservation" of these two works by digitizing and releasing them for us again.
One of these two works is "Cyrano" with the great portrayl by Christopher Plummer of certainly one of the greatest characters in all literature. This show sadly closed after only a very few performances. The songs, while not really "great" are certainly quite listenable--but ONE, is spectacular and makes it worth the cost of the whole album, and that is "You Have Made Me Love"--what a winner it is!
The second of these works is "Baker Street" with Fritz Weaver and Inga Swenson. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to see this one before it closed, also, shortly after it opened. I could never understand why it did not catch on. Weaver and Swenson were simply marvelous, it was exciting, funny, and had great tunes and catchy lyrics. I dispaired for years over the non-release of this show on compact disc. I even wrote Universal, who has the rights to Decca's catalogue, and they blew me off. Then, out of the blue this spring there it was listed as a pre-release on amazon here! I immediately went to my local music shop and ordered a copy. And guess what.......there is a bonus track of the Great Richard Burton singing the best song from the show "A Married Man"!
If you love Broadway Cast albums, you need these two disks. If you remember the shows, you need these two disks. And lastly, if you are totally unfamiliar with these two works, you need these two disks. In short--You Need These Disks! Period!
Take my word, both of these albums are wonderful "keepers" that you will listen to over and over, both because they are unusual and not so well known, and also because they are truly great works. I wish you much happy listening to them. ~operabruin
An Enjoyable Surprise.......2006-06-29
I have had the record album of Baker Street for years, but have not been able to play it for a loooong time. My parent's owned a copy, and around the time of my early teens when I got into Sherlock Holmes, I listened to it and was quite delighted with it.
I purchased the cd with some trepidation, not knowing if it would have the same affect on me now that I am in my early 40's. Although a song that I loved back in the day, does not resonate with me now...others do. All in all a delightful musical.
If you are into musicals one can hear elements of "My Fair Lady" and "Oliver!" as well as early hints of "Sweeney Todd" types of musical stylings.
What makes this an even better cd is the booklet that describes the show, its changes, and its problems.
If you are into classic musicals and/or a true Sherlock Holmes fan you will probably enjoy this.
HOORAH FOR BAKER STREET - AT LAST!!.......2006-03-09
I was lucky enough to see this lush musical twice - once on opening night and the second time when they changed Inge Swenson's opening number (I thought that "I'm in London Aagin" a much better and more appropriate opening number for Irene). I sorry though that the second number was not put on as an extra on this CD for posterity - it may never have been recorded. I have been waiting for years for this to appear on CD - well worth the wait. Inge Swenson is absolutely glorious and well balanced against the cold, clear portrait of Fritz Weaver's Holmes. Then there is the exhuberance of Teddy Green, who also brought his great presence to Darling of the Day. The musical may have been a 'flop' but I am sure that those who saw and loved it will always have fond memories of a 'hit'. An intriguing score with the soaring voice of Swenson so very memorable. It will more than likely never be revived to the level it was originally produced but thank you Decca for bringing this marvelous musical to life again on CD! Now how about "A Time For Singing".
A FASCINATING, HIGHLY ANTICIPATED MUSICAL . . . . .......2006-02-22
Fascination with "Baker Street, a Musical Adventure of Sherlock Holmes" during the years since the final curtain came down at the Martin Beck Theatre on the night of November 14, 1965 has grown to the point that Decca Broadway has finally released - for the first time on CD - the long out-of-print original cast recording. All of us who share an interest in the history of the American musical should raise a glass of stout and say, "Well done, mates."
I've probably listened to my LP no more than once or twice, but "Baker Street" always has maintained a special place in my memory. It is, after all, one of the two recorded shows that features my all-time favorite actress/singer - and fellow Nebraskan - Inga Swenson. First appearing in "The New Faces of 1956," she went on to win the 1957 Theatre World Award for "The First Gentleman" and understudied Julie Andrews ("Camelot") before receiving her first Tony nomination for "110 in the Shade." ( In spite of its wonderful Tom Jones/Harvey Schmidt score and Ms. Swenson's outstanding performance, RCA has had the chutzpah to drop the OC recording from its catalogue. Go figure.)
I must admit that I was disappointed the first time I listened to the CD. For the most part, the score sounded derivative and uninspired. What disappointed me most was the fact that, as wonderful as Ms. Swenson is, the songs she is given to sing can't hold a candle to those in "110 in the Shade." Furthermore, one gets the impression, just from listening, that the creators of this show never really decided what the focus should be. Instead of ending Act I with a dramatic musical spot, it ends with a "Perils of Pauline" ticking time bomb. Additionally, the final number, sung by a band of thieves, falls quite some time before the end of the show, which ends with Holmes disappearing into the fog, presumably on his way to America in romantic pursuit of Irene Adler (Ms. Swenson).
Only after reading the published script (Doubleday & Company) and listening for a second time, did I come to appreciate the way the musical numbers fit into the play. Not only was I able to better appreciate the songs, but now, for the life of me, I can't get "What a Night This Is Going To Be" out of my head!!!
With Oliver Smith's Tony-winning sets, Motley's period costumes and the Bill Baird Marionettes enacting the Diamond Jubilee parade, it must have been a fun show to see. But 1965 was the year of "Man of LaMancha" & "Sweet Charity;" "Hello, Dolly" & "Fiddler on the Roof" were still going strong. "Baker Street" closed after 311 performances, with a loss to its investors.
Recommended, especially because of Inga Swenson. ALSO recommended is "Holmes and Watson Sing," Ken Mandelbaum's expert critique of the "Baker Street" CD and fascinating background of the show.
