Accuse Rod Stewart of what you like--through the years he's been called a philanderer, a has-been, a pageant-ish progenitor of puff rock--but as he has consistently proved with his Great American Songbook series, the concept of dignity is not lost on him. There is a time, after all, for leaping across stages in leopard-print spandex while shamelessly parading an unparalleled gift for scratchy-voiced seduction, and he is past it. Past his prime is another thing. On this fourth installation of the Clive Davis-produced series, Stewart again makes excellent use of his rolodex: Diana Ross, whose affection for this material comes through as convincingly as her spike-haired partner's, cuddles up for opener "I've Got a Crush On You," Chaka Khan packs her bags but not her mighty vocals for "You Send Me," and Sir Elton shelves the recent balladeer's instincts for a rip-roaring run through "Makin' Whoopee." A handful of marquee instrumentalists also returned Rod's calls-- Dave Koz blows sax on "Nevertheless," and trumpeters Chris Botti and Roy Hargrove turn up the heat on "I Wish You Love" and "My One and Only Love" respectively. As on earlier discs, though, it's when Rod rules the spotlight alone that he can be most compelling: Cue up "My Funny Valentine" in the right frame of mind and you may never need to hear it sung by another. Retiring the satin shirts in favor of this material was the smartest move Stewart ever made. --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart: Songbook IV.......2007-07-04

We have purchased all four of the songbook CD's, and enjoy all equally. This is a nice and easy listen, for relaxing times. Stewart seems to feel the moods of the songs, and performs them with style. My wife plays them at her restaurant and gets many good compliments also.

5 out of 5 stars Vibrating, exciting and mesmerizing recordings!.......2007-04-09

Rod Stewart, apart to be a living legend on stages through over three decades and a half, , is a singer who has known to reinvent himself over and over. This successful idea, so desired for many others singers have found in his original voice, the perfect instrument to bring us back to all these vanished memories,
Unforgettable melodies that found the widest resonance in the decade of the forties, fifties and sixties.

Supported by a fabulous big leaguer musical team, Stewart has know to sharp every song he sung, with adequate emotion, accuracy and commitment. The result of this initial experiment has been materialized until this date in four extraordinary registers.

In what concerns this special album the result has been particularly gratifying. The achieved maturity has been reached until the last consequences. He is a crooner of a huge charisma and extraordinary melodic vein, reason which this CD has figured so many weeks in enviable ranking sellers as one the most fortunate since its release the last year.

Under any circumstance you should miss this fabulous compilation, that somehow complements decades that will never get back but that certainly feed and flamed the romantic imagination and were motives of special and pleasant attention for many couples around the world that nowadays are grandfathers or even great grand fathers.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to '70's punk........2007-06-08

This boxed set has many great and classic punk songs. I would recommend it particularly to young people today who didn't live in the late '70's. Back in '78 or so, some of this type of music is what really got me interested in rock'n'roll to begin with. I think it's a great collection, but Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, and some others who were really not true punk rock, don't really belong on this set. However, it's good to see many of the New York (CBGB) bands here. This is the true rebellious music of the 1970's, just like rockabilly was in the 1950's, even though the genres and styles are completely different.

5 out of 5 stars "Yes Thanks" to No Thanks.......2007-02-09

This was a gift for a really good friend for her birthday and I just gave it to her the other day. She called me the next day and said she hadn't stopped playing the CD box set on her stereo and in her car because it brought her back to being 13 again when punk was in its infancy. She loved it.

So I guess anyone who enjoyed this era of punk will enjoy this CD box set immensely.

4 out of 5 stars The soundtrack to my college years.......2006-10-21

This set takes me right back to smoky clubs and spiky-haired boys with black nails and eyeliner. Good times. Good music.

I have to agree with previous reviewers, though - this is not an overview of the punk movement by any stretch of the imagination. Luckily for me, that's not why I bought it. If you're looking for a representative collection of early punk, keep walking. But if you're looking to reconnect with your mis-spent youth, this is the place.

2 out of 5 stars The Real Epitaph.......2006-05-15

It somehow just makes sense that thirty years later you'd see a cd version of the same type of lame "new wave" cash-in albums that cropped up like mushrooms in '77-'78. The predictable and the loss leaders are all here, in a way that really makes me oddly nostalgic

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Rasputina.......2006-08-10

Rasputina's "Thanks for the Ether" is a hard to describe, hard to absorb, but ultimately brilliant album. The band is comprised of 3 cello players, and as far as classification, it's classical, orchestral cello music in more traditional rock song structure. For many like me who listen to mostly contemporary music, it's almost like a different language and could be an acquired taste.

Charismatic frontwoman Melora Creager makes the album (and the band), with her incredibly detailed and descriptive lyrics, usually descriptions of some event, person or situation. She also has a wicked sense of humor, evidenced in her stage presence and the spoken word interludes on this album (including one insisting that the term "settlers" implies the "willingness to settle for a meal of human flesh"). More subtlely funny moments included the purposely mumbled and indecipherable lyrics of "Sister Sleep". Song topics range from the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire to a mysterious note signed 'Mr. E. Leon Rauis'. Oh yeah, and she's an awesome singer, with a distinctive sound, range and a lot of vibrato.

There are a full 19 songs on this album (even the spoken word pieces have cello accompaniment) and none of them are at all weak. My personal favorites are the lively "Stumpside", and the more melancholic tunes like "Any Old Actress" and mysterious "Dig Ophelia". There's a catchy melody at the root of every song here, and a ton of diversity. There's also some covers of older songs, Melanie's "Brand New Key" and "Why Don't You Do Right". For all the cleverness and humor, a lot of these songs have real emotional effect on me. The feel is often one of nostalgia and conjures up images of the Victorian times that they're so enamoured with.

The difference between this and later Rasputina is that on later albums such as "How We Quit the Forest" (also great) they were literally playing classic rock songs on the cello, distortion and all, and the arrangements were simplified compared to the full blown harmonizing and intricacy of this first album.

So, there's my bad attempt at describing this band / album, which is a lot more than just a novelty. "Thanks for the Ether" is highly recommended to anyone looking for something different, and if you get the chance to see this band live, it's an experience you'll never forget.

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2006-02-07

I saw Rasputina live, and they are great! However this album is a bit disappointing, with not enough stand-out tracks and too much spoken word which tries to be funny but isn't. Transylvanian Concubine is their big hit, and is the best track on the album. However seeing as there aren't too many cello goth rock bands out there it might be worth a purchase for the sake of novelty. Maybe another one of their albums is better.

Kate Moss? That gawddamn rollerskate song? Oh, no. The spoken tracks are equally repelling. There is really no atmosphere to this album.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome album.......2005-06-18

One of my top fave Rasputina albums. Tons of great songs, very few joke songs, and great art work.

5 out of 5 stars Clever and beautiful.......2004-09-03

This is Rasputina's first (and best) album. The cello music is inspired and much more noticeable than on their other albums, and the lyrics are remarkably insightful, ironic, and clever. It is also tinged with sadness, cynicism, and of course, the Victorian era and other tales from ages past, which is their trademark.

Few musicians mirror Los Angeles's tradition of rock chameleons better than Lowell George, son of a Hollywood furrier and the brilliant, short-lived auteur that shaped Little Feat's '70s sound and fury before retreating to allow a more democratic if less gripping chemistry to surface. George's hearty but lyrical, blues-rimmed voice, signature electric slide guitar, and infectious, often surreal songs defined the band--as did his production on their pivotal mid-decade albums, which convinced more than a few listeners that they were Southerners. His 1979 solo album, recorded shortly before his untimely death, mixed new originals ("Honest Man," "Cheek to Cheek," "Himmler's Ring," and the touching "20 Million Things" among them) with smart R&B covers from Allen Toussaint ("What Do You Want the Girl to Do") and Ann Peebles ("I Can't Stand the Rain"), dressed in tight brass choruses and sleek backing choruses, and fit snugly with the Feat canon. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars A classic from the frontman for Little Feat..........2007-06-13

Could the 1970's have had a more convincing conclusion to a decade filled with musical genius than with this release? No more compelling argument could be made as Lowell George releases a little-heard, yet pure, goose-bump treat with his only solo release - due to his untimely demise. Every track is a vocal treat and Lowell uses his voice to take the listener on the journey of life. Tears well in my eyes as I listen to "What Do You Want The Girl To Do" as it beckons remembrances of a much earlier, unjaded, time in life when young-love consumed with untold promise. "Easy Money" shows a sixties style funk combined with Dr. John-style New Orleans musical themes... I can visualize the hooker trying to set-up her john! We take a journey back-in-time with "Himmler's Ring" as a pleasant stroll through a long-ago era of pleasantries and genteel folk. Even "Cheek to Cheek" is a convincing Spanish ballad with Lowell's typical tongue-in-cheek humor. Could you really ask for anything more? This album represents a lasting tribute to a truly great artist.

5 out of 5 stars Lowell George CD a Keeper.......2006-08-01

Any one who is interested on L.A.rock bands know of LITTLE FEAT.Lowell was the lead guitarist and vocalist and wrote most or all of their material. His only solo disc features members of L.F. as well as others. the songs are great and belongs in anyone's collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not That Bad.............2006-06-02

For those that love to trash good and sometimes great music, maybe you're looking for something the given material isn't.
Song writting alone make this 4 stars. Lowell was probing areas of music then, that Little Feat, ( Whom I rate Highly )are just now catching up with. Cheek to Cheek and Correzons y Sombras.
The original is many times the best version, but with Lowell's tunes they are strong enough to remain true to the cover versions and still retain that L.G.magic found in his material. Easy Money. Riickie Lee Jones did the tune justice.
The change in key positions as with drummers particularly while retaining that Lowell George essence is amazing.
The shortcomings of this first solo effort are far less than the wonderful highpoints of this very missed singer/songwritter/shaman/...........

5 out of 5 stars This is the best record in the history of western civilzation.......2005-10-14

Look...I've heard it all...I have a almost music degree, played in new Orleans, NYC, seen everyone live, been a roadie, a music critic, studied with many, saw zappa and all the rest...The guy was the real deal. If you never heard Lowell George on his own or with little feat you missed a chapter of almost the best music of the 60-79 scene...He wrote a million songs and recorded a hundred...Willin and Dont Bogart that Joint are his originals, but there are many others and he covers the best of allen tousaint and the other stuff with little feat is absolutely flawless. For an LA band they were impossibly funky and Lowell was the beginning and the end of little feat to most folks. I love little feat but I ADORE LOWELL GEORGE and I PLAY JAZZ...I've lived in New Orleans, played jazz, funk, of all the white guys who ever lived this guy was the best. So says me and a few others. Ask Mick jagger in 1975 or say, Eric Clapton or taj mahal, to name a few...or anyone from la to Chicago...to NY to sau Paulo. NOBODY did it better than Lowell. Ask Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Tom waits, Linda Rondstand, Emmy Lou Harris, Paul Simon...This is the best record he ever recorded and I dare anyone to say otherwise. Just listen and if you are not convinced Ill pay the price of the record and shipping and by it back from you.

5 out of 5 stars Unique artist who will never be matched........2005-09-27

Nobody sounds like Lowell George. Bonnie Raitts slide guitar playing comes very close but as far as voices go nobody has the lusty, gritty , down home vocal qualities. I love Allen Toussaints version of "What do you want the girl to do?" but upon hearing Lowells version i quickly realised this song was just made for him. Perhaps i would've liked to have heard some more faster paced songs on this one (as it is very laidback) but nevertheless Lowell manages to cover everything from Tex-Mex ("Cheek to Cheek") to blues (Rikki Lee Jones's "Easy Money") to country ("20 million things to do")to R & B.(Ann Peebles's "I can't stand the rain").
"Two Trains" is done in the traditional Little Feat mode and is a masterpiece.
This c.d is a masterpiece. One of the best albums from 1979 when most folk were experiencing the punk era. I recall back in 1979 British Blues musician Alexis Korner (a.k.a. The Father of British Blues) played the album for weeks on his radio programme on BBC 2 (UK) partly in tribute to Lowell ,who had just passed away. Alexis KNEW about good music and only played what he considered essential. For me it stood out like a diamond in the rough back then and today it has the same effect on me. Sadly, it was Lowells last.

4 out of 5 stars Good Dance Music.......2006-10-31

I bought the soundtrack for "Body Beautiful" and "She's A Lady", which are great songs, but the rest of the songs are pretty good, too. Not one of my all time favorite CD's, but good for parties or housework. However, if you haven't seen the movie you have got to get it!! It's hysterical!! Watching Patrick Swayze getting ready for his big night to the tune of "Body Beautiful" is worth the price of the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars What more could a queen want?.......2005-01-28

While "To Wong Foo..." is the perfect combination of drama and sexiness, it has some steep competition with "Priscilla: Queen of the Desert". However, it does hold it's own as a soundtrack loaded with all your favourite divas (i.e., Patti Labelle, Cyndi Lauper and Salt-N-Peppa) and some of their most famous hits. The only downside to the entire CD is the original score medley which brings the high energy down to almost nothingness (unlike "Priscilla" which contained bonus and extended remixes of the most memorable songs). Nevertheless, "To Wong Foo..." remains a must have for anyone who's ever dreamed of being a queen.

5 out of 5 stars I Know I wanna be this, Gucci heels give me cleavage!.......2004-01-30

Boy, Girl, or boy-girl . . . this soundtrack, is, work it baby, own it, one of the best pre-hello my minions, Sat night red carpet anthems.
The movie isn't the best . . i mean if your a drag queen . . you wouldn't travel & live as a woman . . . but that's hollywood . . they killed Thelma & Lousie for heaven sake!
But yeah Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2002-10-02

Style vs Substance - this movie AND cd have both.

HIGHLY recommend it ESPECIALLY to Salt N Pepa fans!

Body Beautiful Baby, WORK that BODY!

haha!

GET IT! NOW! Nice spot with Rupaul at Webster Hall, which if you grew up in NYC is good enough of a reason to get the movie...

5 out of 5 stars "Sometimes it just takes a fairy" (from the film).......1999-10-03

This film and its soundtrack are gay camp at their best!! Cyndi Lauper's remix of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is stellar. In fact, there's not a bad track on this disc! I'd say this soundtrack will one day be up there with its campy predecessor, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." ^_^ Great!

Ten years into a remarkable run of smart, snotty, cynical, hopeful, and always in-your-face-albums, Fat Mike and his crew still maintain a winning percentage to rival the Harlem Globetrotters'. Snippets of ska and outright pop enter the mix here and there on this eighth full-length release, but whatever the sound, the mood is as thoroughly smart-ass as ever. More often than not, NoFX's barbs are directed inward--as you might expect from a band with a concert disc entitled I Heard They Suck Live. That giddily defeatist mood is captured perfectly on lunatic sneerfests like "It's My Job to Keep Punk Rock Elite" and "All Outta Angst." --David Sprague

5 out of 5 stars This album NEVER gets old.......2006-11-16

...for me at least. i can always go back to this album when i get bored of what im listening to. i've owned this cd since 1999 when i discovered NOFX. i like it better the punk in drublic. if you have never listen to nofx before i suggest getting this cd first and going from there.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Their Best.......2006-06-23

This little punk album is actually one of NOFX's best albums but there are a bunch just as good. The cool thing about this cd is that it doesnt seem like they were trying to put together a great album considering it took less than 3 days to put it together and record and most of the songs are only around 2 minutes long. This album literally flies by making you wish that there were more tracks... and that is definately a good thing. There is almost no filler like on some of their albums and my favorite songs are 180 Degrees, Quart In Session, Dad's Bad News, All Outta Angst, I'm Telling Tim, All His Suits Are Torn, The Desperation's Gone, It's My Job To... & the short but sweet Murder The Government. NOFX lays down some of their catchiest songs ever here for instance 180 Degrees is my favorite song by them to date so if you are a slight fan of the band do not hesitate to pick this up.

4 out of 5 stars their last good album before the huge nose dive........2006-06-22

i do think this is one the best NOXF cds..i mean surely its not better than punk in drublic or white trash two heebs...but i would compare it more to their newest album..wolves in wolves clothing...it has enough good music to make it worthwhile and it doesnt reek of boo hooing over stupid things as much as the two weak albums that follow this..i find that this NOFX cd started the whole whiny NOFX thing..i mean listen to the previous albums and you will hear grade A pop-punk.

get this cd 3rd or 4th in your NOFX quest.

      Amazon.com essential recording

This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time. A joyous performance, just right for the holiday season. --David Hurwitz

Trevor Pinnock meets with mixed success in this account of the Messiah with the English Concert & Choir and soloists Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, and John Tomlinson, recorded and released in 1988. Its strengths are the strengths of the early-music movement in general. The size and distribution of the instrumental and vocal forces are optimal, which means that textures are clear and balances apt. Rhythms are nicely pointed, though often, in Pinnock's case, not quite well enough sprung. Tempos are well chosen; for example, "All we like sheep"--which turns out to be one of the set's best numbers--is a real bourré, and Pinnock animates it in just the right way. But the performance often seems workmanlike and unemotional, weighed down in too many instances by the humdrum work of the chorus. The alto section in particular, which is half male and half female, sings timidly and is constantly swallowing its entrances. Bass soloist John Tomlinson is a further drag on the effort. He has the right idea--that there's an Italian opera hiding behind all this biblical imagery--but his cottony sound is out of place, a misguided attempt to mimic Nicolai Ghiaurov. His usable range is less than a tenth (he croaks the low G's and F-sharps), and his diction is horrible. "Thus spake the Lord" is strangled, and when, in "The trumpet shall sound" Tomlinson gets to the words "we shall be changed," one can't help wishing that he had been changed too, right before the sessions started. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Ladies & gentleman: The Lord'n Savior, God Almighty.......2007-06-13

Handel's Messiah is my favorite piece of classical music. Of the two versions that I had I only have left this one, and it is not the best (the other had been a cheap recording whose author's name I forgot too). This version seems to lack a little enthusiasm from the voices; too melancholic. Anyway, this is the first review of any music that I write, and probably will be the last too, so I just want to leave my impression of how I feel when I hear these solemn and heavenly sounds. One feels so raised to the heavenlies... I can almost sense the presence of the Lord Almighty up yonder among the clouds, and me being carried in solemnity to meet Him. Far away are the buzzing sounds of earthly chores. The air is fresh and clean as we are raised above the valleys, and we come to meet God's elected amid the singing, stronger and stronger. Jubilant, bathed in the glorious rays of the Savior's Light, we come together and sing: Glory to God, glory to God, praise and glory for He is coming...

2 out of 5 stars So Fashionable, and So Disappointing.......2007-02-01

This would be a great 21st Century Reader's Digest version of Messiah, if such a thing existed any more. Handel did as much as he could, but really, the performers still have to do something besides posture, which, by the way, seems to me to characterize many performances these days. Fashionable, but musically deficient.

Specifically: John Tomlinson sings like he thinks he IS God, instead of singing about Him. Heavy, cumbersome, and overblown. May I add boorish?

Arleen Auger has a very sweet voice. And??

Despite the program notes insisting that certain segments of this Messiah are given to "the contralto", Anne Sofie von Otter is NOT a contralto. Not even close.

The male alto can barely sustain a legato line - why he insists upon throwing in those complicated, badly-performed embellishments I can't figure. Well, I can, but I'd really rather not say.

Wake up, choristers!! It's 'For Unto Us A Child Is Born," not "Oy, I have to go to the grocery store today."

Boy do I regret having spent almost $40 on this one. Thank goodness I have the Colin Davis to console me.

4 out of 5 stars A nice combination of period nad tradiitonal.......2006-12-17

This 1988 recording sits between the euqally English, euqally period-ifnluenced Hogwood and Garidner. Of the three, Hogwood sounds more 'authentic' because it uses boys in the chorus and singers schooled period practice. By comparison, Pinnock's soprano, Arleen Auger, and mozeeo, Von Otter, are essentially modern singers--gorgeous ones, of course, Gardiner is far more anemic in his conducting and uses a scrwny-sounding orchestra, so if that's more authentic, so be it. Of the three, Pinnock gives us more traditional music values in his emotional expression and instrumental timbres.

The competiiton is mushc stiffer now than in 1988, but Pinnock's reading has survived the test of time. He is not a genuinely inspired conductor--sadly, Messiah has become a cottage industry that excludes most big-name talents--but neither are Gardiner and Hogwood. (For sheer musicality, I tend to put my money on Andrew Parrott, Robert King, Marc Minkowski, Niklaus Harnoncourt, and Rene Jacobs.) But he's certainly good eough. The reason I haven't given five stars is that the male soloists aren't first-rate, and in particular the Wotan voice of John Tomlinson sounds cavernous in the bass arias. Add to that Pinnock's tendency toward tepidness, and what you end up with is a very good but not great performance.

5 out of 5 stars Wait! Before you buy..........2006-05-28

... This Messiah has recently been re-released at a much cheaper price. Go back and look for the DG "The Originals" release, which is being sold new for under $12.

5 out of 5 stars La mas bella y fidedigna interpretacion que se pueda obtener.......2004-12-29
