Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). this cd is pure magic...almost 20 great christmas songs on one cd sung by the voice of an angel herself..there may be a few mixed reviews by some people who must be opera voice teachers because there is nothing wrong with this cd...it is flawless....charlotte's soaring vocals, the beautiful orchestra and background singers, the whole cd has the christmas feel to it..."o come all ye faithfull" has to be heard to be believed...it is breathtaking...i love charlottes take on "winter wonderland" and "ding dong merrily on high" ..made me want to go dance in the snow or something.....she hits every note beautifully..buy this cd...i bought it back in 2000 and have listened to it at every Christmastime since or Christmas doesnt feel the same.

Charlotte Church has done it again! She is extremely talented. Even if she was 25 when she put this out, she'd be amazing. But she was only 14-15 years old when she recorded this! Beautiful. This album has great choral accompaniments and fabulous orchestra arrangements. It is a little on the high side in certain songs, but it still sounds amazing. I love her voice.

Some great songs..........2006-08-23

If you love their single, "Night on Fire", you'll probably like a few other songs on the album as well. The album is very upbeat, almost in a bubble gum kind of way. It's a bit sweep for me. But if you like dance rhythms and energetic music, this could be right for you. I just don't find myself reaching for it very often. I probably should have bought the single and stuck with that.

VHS Or Beta is probably my favorite album in the electroclash genre (not that that's saying much - there aren't many good albums in this genre yet - Cut Copy's "Bright Like Neon Love" is also very good although I'm not 100% sure if it's considered electroclash). Every song is catchy and interesting, and the singer is pretty good for the band's style (he's Asian but sure doesn't sound like it!). If there's any song you've heard off this album it's probably "Night On Fire" as it has a music video and is an underground hit (it was on a "Urban Outfitters" mix CD!). Musically the songs are distinctly 80's and electroclash. The only "bad" track here is the last one, "Irreversible". It also loses its catchy momentum during the last half, but they're still all good. I wouldn't call this a classic (for its lack of a "wow" factor and the singer - he's not all that great and likable), but you'll still probably enjoy it. If you like 80's rock or electroclash, though, you will most definitely enjoy this album! Recommended!

The Cure of the New Generation.......2005-12-06

Although i was introduced to VHS or Beta because of their remixed songs, i must admit that they are a truly awesome band. Reminds me of The Cure during the 80's. Cannot pick a favourite track but "You Got Me" and "Nightwaves" are up there. I also saw them in concert during Bang! down in Miami and they are very good. Check them out!!!

New 80's.......2005-08-20

It is like updated 80's music, but not the same updated 80's that other bands are doing. I like their one foot in dance music and one foot in rock music. I like the whole CD including the instrumentals some others seem to not like, especially "Irreversable" and "Forever".

Now let us talk about the song "Alive". I can't believe it hasn't gotten more fave mentions. I can't stop listening to it at all. Very hooky and a fabulous guilty pleasure. I make no apologies for being madly in love with that song.

When I first heard them I thought of The Cure (who I have also been listening to a lot lately). Music evokes Duran Duran/Daft Punk/The Cure. I am not saying anything new here that everyone else hasn't already mentioned. So get out there and crank the song "Alive" to the loudest volume possible.

Excellent retro-80s sound remade for the 21st century.......2005-08-07

This is VHS or Beta's second album, and even though it's been out almost a year (released September, 2004), the band is still out there touring in support of this album, finding new fans every day. I am one of those.

"Night on Fire" (10 tracks, 52 min.) starts of with the title track, and the second you hear the lead singer, you think, "wow, has Simon Lebon joined VHS or Beta"? In fact, the first 2 tracks have an overall "Duran Duran" feel to it, and would fit in very nicely next to "Girls on Film". After that, the band sounds much more distinct (albeit it still inviting comparisons). There are several instrumentals and almost-instrumentals on here that are among the best tracks on the album: "Forever" is hypnotic behind the "Forever on my own" chorus; "Nightwaves" is full of energy; and the best is saved for last: the closer "Irreversible" is a 9 min. instrumental blowout that synthesizes the band's sound perfectly. I find myself playing that track more than any other.

I saw VHS or Beta in concert not long ago. Live they rock out, and make even the wallflowers in the audience dance along, you just can't resist it. If you have a chance to see them, doooo eet.

A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

A Timeless Christmas Classic.......2003-12-08

I'm a lover of traditional Christmas music and I've acquired about 20 CDs of it. There's nothing my family likes better in December than putting on some good Christmas music and getting in the mood for the season, hearing once again the old favorites you've known since childhood. Of all the Christmas music CDs I've tried, I have two desert-island favorites, the two I always reach for first. This is one of them. I think it's one of the greatest recordings of traditional Christmas music ever made. The arrangements (by Arthur Harris) are joyous, beautiful, and soul-stirring; the performances are heartfelt and magnificent. If you can listen to this CD and not feel filled by the Christmas spirit, you must be (a) named Ebeneezer Scrooge, or (b) deaf. This one is a timeless Christmas classic, not to be missed. Warmest recommendation.

Amazing skills, yet too busy for listening enjoyment.......2006-12-13

I can't believe how well John Bayless has mastered the piano. This is very obvious from the first song that you ever hear him play. I'd really like to watch him play in concert. However, the songs on this album are too much work for me to listen to. The music is so busy that I can hardly concentrate on the melody and it hardly gives me the peace I expect from traditional Christmas music. Some of my favorites for this category are Jim Brickman, David Huntsinger, and Tim Janis.

My favorite of the season.......2004-12-31

This is the holiday music I have listened to throughout the season, and it is so beautiful I cannot bear to put it away yet. I love Bayless's work at any time, and these arrangements simply take my breath away. His blending of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with "Going Home" from the New World Symphony is particulary poignant. And his signature "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring/Amazing Grace" is seasonless and timeless. Christmas is over, but get this anyway; it's wonderful.

David Lanz? Jim Brickman? John Tesh? Move over guys... John Bayless has done what no others could... Taken the xmas classics to a new level of musical enjoyment! If you're a fan of classic Christmas music, this is one of the albums you need for your collcetion. Jim Neighbors is not Gomer Pyle. His powerful voice is on full display here, and the song selection is well vaired. Go Tell It On The Mountain is the highlight here, but all of the songs deliver a strong Christmas mood. This will fit fine right next to Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Nat King Cole in your Christmas album collection.

Christmas memories.......2003-03-06

These songs bring back memories of us kids coming in from school and hearing Jim Nabors as we were greeted by my mom in the kitchen with hot chocolate ready to go. An aging Ormandy has lost his zest.......2006-08-19

Even at his peak Ormandy never made the blood race. His aesthetic didn't allow music to break out of a mold that was shapely, lush, and careful. But in old age the conductor's energy considerably flagged, and RCA got a bad deal when they signed him up just before he died. Here the Philadelphia Orch. steps into Boston Pops territory, but technically they sound miles ahead of their northern counterparts. There's nothing to point out that's better or worse than anything else.

I'd say the chief value of this pops collection is the fine recorded sound and the appeal to young listeners getting their first taste--as we all did-- of chestnuts like the Sorcerer's Apprentice and Danse Macabre.

Fanstastic? Oh yes! indeed!!.......2002-12-24

No excessive motion, no exaggerated sound effect, just steadily well-balanced performance. This is the way Ormandy has always been towards his recording. Nevertheless, sound quality is superme, bold and full of layer.

This album, seemingly designed to appetite the followers of "The Glorious Sound of Philadelphia" like the delighted dessert over the dinner. Amusing and joyful. Instead of giving you a blast of your mind, Ormandy let the music played just by the way it should sound. Simply enjoying and easy listening. Like the sun shine over the meadow.

Personally, I enjoy every title in this CD. Highly recommend: Danse macabre, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, España, rhapsody for orchestra, Night on Bald Mountain & Ritual Fire Dance

Ormandy and Philadelphia Going Through the Motions.......2002-08-06

An Ormandy critic once wrote: "Ormandy was basically a good, reliable musician who cultivated an orchestral sound that served all music in the same routine, uniform way." While this statement is prima facie untrue, one wouldn't know it from listening to this latest entry in BMG's "High Performance" series (RCA's new audiophile series of recordings from the late 1960's through the late-'70's, early-'80's, akin to RCA's "Living Stereo" series of recordings from the 1950's - 1960's).

Despite my ardor for the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy (please, God, gave us from Sawallisch!), during a period of time in the early 1970's, there were a number of his performances which I find fall below his usual high standards (especially the RCA Red Seal releases of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony [I much prefer the Columbia Masterworks 1959 recording] and Swan Lake excerpts). These recordings have the beautiful tonal sheen typical of the "Philadelphia Sound," but Ormandy's tempo is painfully dragging; it sounds as though he's on valium in these recordings.

The Fantastic Philadelphians falls within the same company; These are showpieces, but I couldn't detect any of the fire that
Ormandy lent to other recordings from this era (particularly his 1968 recording of Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony and his 1973 recording of Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony). The sound is gorgeous, but the pacing so slow that it sounds as though Ormandy doesn't care about these pieces, as though he's just trying to get through the recording sessions.

However, there is a glimpse of Ormandy's incendiary potential in the Russian Sailors' Dance and Hungarian Dance No. 5, but instead of a raging flame, all that's there is the pilot light. With all of the excellent unavailable Ormandy recordings out there, I do not understand why BMG chose to release this disc as their first Ormandy entry in the "High Performance" series. I would have much preferred to have seen them release his 1978 recording (the first digital recording made by RCA) of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra or all of the Sibelius recordings languishing in BMG vaults (especially Symphony No. 7 [1975] and Tapiola [1976]) or his peerless recording of Dvorak's Eighth Symphony (1977). But, then again, BMG's neglect of Ormandy is documented and endemic. For example: BMG has released his recordings of Sibelius' First (1978) and Fifth (1975) Symphonies, both tremendously subtle and profound recordings, but not in North America. They are only out on their European "RCA Classical Navigator" series, and I had to order the CD from an online British store.

Back to this disc: If what you want is to hear great classical showpieces, beautifully recorded and played, to hear as
background music, then buy this disc -- it is not without merit. But if you want to *actively* listen to these pieces, skip this one; Ormandy and the Philadelphians are on auto-pilot on this one.

Ormandy At A Late-Era Peak.......2002-05-11

This CD is a compilation of sorts--a recording of personal orchestral favorites that the Philadelphia Orchestra and its legendary music director Eugene Ormandy made in 1971 and 1972 for RCA.

While the eleven works on the CD are often thought of as "pops stables" or "musical bon-bons", Ormandy and his orchestra nevertheless displayed a great deal of professionalism in giving these works a great deal of new energy. Of particular note are the three works--Mussorgsky's "Night On Bald Mountain"; Ponchielli's "Dance Of The Hours"; and Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"--which the orchestra performed under Leopold Stokowski in 1940 for Disney's classic movie FANTASIA. Ormandy breathes new life into these orchestral warhorses. The performance of Saint-Saens' ghoulish "Danse Macabre" is appropriately spooky. And the much-covered "Dance Of The Comedians" by Smetana, and Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 are also pulled off brilliantly. This is Ormandy at his late-era peak, and is essential to understanding how he bought this orchestra to the position as one of the world's best, a standing it has held ever since FANTASIA.

Fun!.......2001-03-15

Ormandy and the Philadelphians--who are truly fantastic in these performances--give the listener an aural and musical treat.

Many of these performances are superlative, and the engineering is excellent. While Ormandy could let his players get a little sloppy when he was recording for RCA, such is not the case here.

Danse Macabre is wonderfully well done, but the other Saint-Saens item, Bacchanale from Samson and Deliah, has one of the most overwhelming climaxes I've ever heard.

Espana seems to be the one item that isn't totally successful, IMHO, but not unsatisfying either. On the other hand, the Sorcerer's Apprentice is very well done, as is the Night on Bald Mountain (although here a little more roughness is called for).

The Philadelphia violas really let you luxuriate in the de Falla and the Gliere. And what a delight to have some other bon-bons, especially the Dances of the Comedians and Hours.

Worth every penny!

Decca has come out with the "Ultimate" Series of albums, ranging from Opera Divas to Tango, from Patriotic to Relaxing Classical. I ordered this album last fall from a high school student in my neighborhood going door to door raising funds for her hockey team. I had no idea what the Christmas music was, I just wanted something relaxing. When it arrived in the mail I was delighted to hear favorites from my youth - Annunzio P. Mantovani, Frank Chacksfield (remember him?), and Ronnie Aldrich - all remastered in terrific sound! The liner notes are fun to read, providing a story for each carol and song. This generous album of 22 tracks runs a total time of 63:25, providing holiday ambience from Thanksgiving through New Years Day.

If you need some Christmas Spirit, this is the CD for you. Every mood of Christmas music is included in this album and the song "Walking in the Air" is worth the price of the CD by itself.

This CD really represents the music our family likes to hear during the holiday season. The selections are beautifully arranged, performed with a variety of vocalists and are all recognizable holiday favorites that had us singing away while wrapping gifts and enjoying the season's festivities (even made cleaning the house somewhat more bearable). I would highly recommend this CD as a musical gift to yourself and someone else!

An Enjoyable Recording from America's Other Pops Orchestra.......2004-12-17

This is a wonderful recording by America's "Other" Pops orchestra. Since I am from Boston, I automatically associate the word Pops with the Boston Pops and when it was first released, purchased it at will believing it was a Boston Pops recording. Upon listening, I realized that it was a different sound than the Boston Pops sound, but this discovery was hardly a disappointment. One of the reasons why Erich Kunzel has been so successful with the Cincinnati Pops is his ability to bring forth a powerful and unique sound. This recording has all the Christmas standards, but the standards are presented in a creative manner, which is both a Telarc and Cincinnati Pops trademark.

There are two great strengths to this recording: its variety and its guests. There are full symphonic arrangements as well as arrangements for soloist, adult and children's choirs. Brass and organ ensembles, and hand bell choirs. The various arrangements are placed in an order throughout the recording that keeps the listener's attention. The gests are also outstanding. Rosemary Clooney, baritone Sherill Milnes, Doc Severinsen, and Toni Tenille add star power to the recording. There are unique tracks, particularly the chilling and somewhat ephemeral "Walking in the Air" from THE SNOWMAN performed by treble Stephen Van Dyck.

I have owned the recording since its release in 1990 and it has become a treasured part of my holiday collection. I am sure other listeners will treasure it too.

Fireside Favorites.......2003-11-19

One of the best Christmas albums you will find. Perfect balance between religious favorites, non-religious classics, and children's favorites. All tastefully done and arranged to fit the theme of the song. Many of the percussion "effects" bring the songs to life and the solo and choral vocals are outstanding. Cannot recommend this album highly enough. A must have for any Christmas collection to be enjoyed for many years.

The perfect Pops Christmas.......2002-05-12

What a wonderful Christmas gift. Erich Kunzel and The Cincinnati Pops rarely fail to please on the Telarc label, and this is (IMHO of course) one of their most pleasing efforts. Rosemary Clooney (Best "White Christmas" since Der Bingle), Doc Severinsen, Stephen Van Dyck, and other guests add wonderfully to a very fun, upbeat, and enjoyable Christmas collection. This cd has become the most played in my Christmas collection...I can't recommend it highly enough.
