2 out of 5 stars Just some trace of what GNR was.......2007-04-10

I bought this CD because I think there is not a lot of good rock music nowadays. I was trying to find something new (new for me) with a touch of good old rock. I tought that Izzy Stradlin, being one of the main songwritters of GNR had to write at least a couple of great songs for his debut solo album. However, it was dissapointing to find out that this CD is just full of mediocre songs. In fact these songs sound just like the usual GNR filler songs that one doesn't listen too often from their CDs. some better than the other but not a single song to mention. Well, I should have known better why this album was not very popular back then when Izzy was incredibly famous.

2 out of 5 stars "Safe" Rock.......2006-06-04

Well, I guess I have to be the lone naysayer here but it seems everybody else rates this cd so highly and I just don't hear it.
I think there are a few ways you can approach this disc. You can be an all out GnR fan or one of those people who read guitar mags & fancy themselves relating to a "real" musician, or you can be someone out looking for some good, dirty, partying rocknroll. I checked this out as one of the former and that's how I'm basing my review.
This comes across to me as an album made by a hard-living rocknroller who has decided to "get serious". The songs are too polished sounding. It doesn't have a sloppy, boozy, fun sound a la the Faces or the NY Dolls. It sounds more John Mellancamp than Johnny Thunders. And I guess that's fine if that's what you enjoy. I really don't think it's a bad album (I would really give it 2 1/2 stars), but I'm reading reviews comparing it to "Exile on Main Street"!
Now with a comparison like that, and with guest appearances by 2(!) ex- Faces, I bought this expecting something a bit more. But what I found was something more technical, polished, and blues-rock-by-numbers then I really care for. And that's why I'm writng this, because I get the impression that this recording is trying to come across as a rocker in the "Sticky Fingers" zone.
So if you're like me, take this as a warning that this disc isn't quite what a lot of people make it out to be. If you like your bluesy rocknroll a bit harder (and a lot more real), I suggest checking out the Waldos "Rent Party" cd.

5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2006-03-23

What a great album. I bought this years ago from Tracks record store in South Bend, IN along with Keith Richards' "Main Offender." Two great albums from two great talents. "Time Gone By" is one for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars The Difference Between Good Rock and Great Rock.......2006-01-14

Do you like Exile on Main Street? Are you going on a short trip? This is the album for that. It is one of the most over looked albums of the nineties, it rocks, has a great cover (Pressure Drop), and has the energy lacking from so called rock bands today. This one holds up. It still sounds fresh today (2006), maybe he wasn't so dumb to leave G-n-R when he did. Izzy got some money and decided to make some killer ROCK. He stuck to his guns more than some of his other former band mates, bless him for that. It goes to show you, rock will never die!!! More than worth a good listen!!!

4 out of 5 stars Q: Where did the songwriting talent in G'n'R lie?.......2005-11-10

A: With Izzy Stradlin

This was released very shortly after leaving Gunners. The fact that Izzy can create a masterpiece in a few months with a bunch of no-names, makes Chinese Democracy look even more of a farce (if that were at all possible). The ultimate tragedy of the Guns 'n' Roses disintegration is that the general public were largely deprived the genius of this man, largely due to his own dislike of publicity and minimal promotion of the album. I'm just thankful that I managed to get my hands on a copy.

Axl Rose sailed off into the operatic stratosphere. Slash sank down into the arena-metal mud. The only member of late supergroup Guns N' Roses to get it garage-rock right, in fact, was rhythm guitarist Stradlin, who hooked up with fellow riff worshipper Rick (Georgia Satellites) Richards for some of the best down 'n' dirty picking this side of Exile on Main Street. This sophomore release is sloppy, scratchy, and growling with gut-level blues-rock. Stradlin pays homage to longtime influence Ron Wood by aping his speedball cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis." Naysayers may tut that Stradlin can't really sing too well. But that's exactly the point. He's singing anyway, naysayers be damned. --Tom Lanham

Album Description

Import edition of the ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist's 1998 album for Geffen. 14 tracks including, 'Ain't It a Bitch', 'Gotta Say' & 'Memphis' (Chuck Berry).

5 out of 5 stars Is this Stradlin's peak?.......2006-05-28

When Izzy Stradlin' left Guns N' Roses, I really thought he would dissapear of the music world. I was so wrong... partially. Basically, Izzy left the mega band because his well known leak of fame and glory. That's the beginning of these new Stradlin's projects. Music as it is, no for selling records, just make good stuff. Music has turned into a garbage can due to all these ridiculous bands... but then we find this great artist.

This album takes the best of Izzy. Or maybe I'm wrong... I also like very much "Izzy Stradlin' and the Ju Ju Hounds" so I wouldn;t be able to say which one is better than the other. What a great guitar introduction on "Ain't it a bitch" a classical rock guitar, no those freaking and annoying guitars we can hear very often from those teenager bands. The album goes faster with "Memphis" still a great beginning, I'm loving this album so far... some soft as "Old Hat" and "Bleedin'" but then a drum announces "Parasite". "Here Before You" sounds like a masterpiece classic of rock and roll... what a song. "Up Jumped the Devil" is so nice too, I love that guitar! "Freight Train" reminded me GN'R's hit "Nightrain" but then I realized it was Izzy's style... unique. "Surf Roach" and "Grunt" sound quite cool for the musitians, well done folks!

So, in conclusion... if you're a teenager and looking for something that maybe you won;t remember in 5 years or you'll be able to tell, you are looking the wrong album. If you wanna listen to some REAL rock music and of course, good stuff... the music that makes rock and roll so cool, then try this one. You won't feel dissapointed. Remember the success of the GN'R? Well, I gotta remind you that Izzy Stradlin' was tha genius of that band, guitar player and the main composer... when he left, the band went down and we all know what happened.

Enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Izzy goes rock-a-billy.......2006-03-29

After a five year hiatus, former Guns N' Roses founder and rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin' returned for his sophomore album "117*" (1998).

"117*" isn't all that much different from Izzy's debut "Izzy Stradlin' and the Ju Ju Hounds." It shows the same kind of Stones/Faces signature, but with a considerable more amount of rock-a-billy thrown in the mix. "117* isn't the most ambitious, challenging or ground-breaking albums ever created, but it's still a finely-crafted collection of songs showcasing Izzy's unique signature and charm. Fans of GN'R and/or hard rock may be disappointed with this album, but fans of rock-a-billy, old-school country, and Izzy's debut will find much to appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars AINT IT A SHAME!!.......2006-01-22

The fact that this and his other albums are only cult classics is the biggest injustice in todays rock world. Stradlin's string of solo albums are not only the best post G&R releases, but even better than most of the classic G&R tracks. Clearly the strongest songwriter of the lot and the only one in the bunch with a true rock and roll sensibility, Stradlin is a god send for true fans of true rock

5 out of 5 stars Izzy at his best!.......2005-09-11

For me this is the best izzy album, because he's more into singing than the first one and he takes his place as frontman. Has a great acoustic and melodic touch and some real nice rock n roll, with the great izzy song writing that made many fans follow him, simple but true lyrics with a down to earth vision, the vision of a man that has seen many things and was there before many others that claim to lead a rock n roll life style.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS NOW.......2005-06-29

I have JuJu Hounds and River as well as 117. If you like anything remotely close to good old rock n roll the way it should be, BUY THIS CD NOW. Izzy is by far the best solo artist to come out of GNR. He can write on anything, his stuff sounds like a raunchier version of the rolling stones. This album picks up right where JuJu Hounds took off. Some might say he can't sing, but I think that his voice rides hand in hand with his music. No matter what other bands you like, whether it be the stones, gnr, zeppelin, hendrix, deep purple, or aerosmith, this will be in your top 10 favorite albums. SPECTACULAR! 5 out of 5 stars quit with the griping .......2006-02-25

i'm fed up with these "in-coherent" reviewers dissin' this album yeah it may not be full blown "guns and roses" hey-day style music it's more in the vein of latter rollin' stones but is that a bad thing? in my opipion it isn't
this is my second stradlin album my first was "izzy and the ju ju hounds"
but this beats that by an inch, for the pure essence of stradlin puttin' his heart and soil into writin' catchy melodies with a great band to back him up with duff mckagan playin' bass and acostic guitar..

i just wish people would give izzy stradlin a chance and not be narrowed minded and fobe off an ex-member of a famous hard rock hair metal band..as a bad man's rolllin' stone
this guy beats the sh88 out of most of the whipper snappers in diapers these days..
god bless IZZY STRADLIN get his damn albums muthafuka's

1 out of 5 stars Solid Tunes, Terrible Production.......2005-10-03

What the HELL happened in the studio? The production on this disc is some of the worst ever...I've heard bootlegs that sounded better than this! Muffled to the point of distraction...the drum sound is especially atrocious, gutless, no punch at all, like the drummer was playing empty oatmeal boxes. The sound almost completely ruins what would otherwise be another pretty decent release. Stick with the previous 3 discs, PLEASE don't let this be your total introduction to Izzy...he deserves better.

2 out of 5 stars Once again, too much country/blues not enough rock and roll.......2005-01-13

This album has one really rocking song at the beginning "Jump In Now" and then it's all down hill from there.

The two reggae songs, "Shall Walk" and "Run-In", are cool and interesting but not enough to legitimize this album's steep import price.

Hey Izzy, you are supposed to be a rock and roll guitarist, so cut out this hokey country/Rolling Stones thing and do a rock album for once.

Izzy Stradlin's first album with the Ju Ju Hounds was very good, underated completely, one of the best rock albums of the 1990s, but it's been all downhill since for Izzy.

If you can get this album used and cheap, then go ahead, otherwise save your money.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Solid effort.......2004-09-04

I love Izzy's records. JuJu Hounds and 117Degrees are classic and I never understood why more people did not embrace them as such. River continues to showcase Izzy's straight ahead rockin' style. I pretty much like all of the songs with the exception of the 2 reggae numbers ( they just did not fit well with the rest of the album). If you can find this its worth picking up, not as good as the first 2 he released but when the music is this good who really cares!

3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2003-12-02

"River" is certainly not a bad album, especially not if you prefer Izzy Stradlin at his hardest rocking and most punk-ish (which I don't). But it is far from being as musically versatile (or indeed as melodic) as his two best records, "117°" and the superb, still-to-be-recognized classic "Izzy Stradlin And The Ju Ju Hounds".
I prefer Izzy's previous blend of rock n' roll, hard rock and acoustic blues-rock, which you'll find on the two albums mentioned above, but "River" has its moments as well. There's just a little bit too far between them, and most of these cuts, while not bad, aren't all that memorable.
(Izzy's latest album, "On Down The Road", recaptures most of his early-90s glory, however. Try listening to that one - provided you already have "Ju Ju Hounds"!)

3 out of 5 stars If you like Rolling Stones or Black Crowes then here it is.......2005-01-21

Let me begin my review by saying that the song "Sweet Caress" is by far the best song by an ex-GNR member, including anything from Velvet Revolver. Izzy did a great job with this ballad.

When I listen to Izzy's recent albums (117 degrees, River, and On Down the Road), I haven't yet heard Ride On, I feel it's kind of like listening to Paul McCartney without John Lennon. Izzy needs a hard rock edge to his music, in other words, he needs a Slash or Axl to liven up his songs.

Most of his songs are just too folksy. Too much sliding guitar riffs. It sounds like a southern rock/country album, which is fine if that's the market he wants to cater to. I just really wish he would put some heavy artillery into his songs, something more like Appetite for Destruction where the songs just grabbed you and really got you excited.

This album has four good songs: Monkeys, Sweet Caress, Coke'n, and Lot To Learn. It also includes a cover of the Rolling Stones song "Please Go Home".

Overall, you should get the album just for the song Sweet Caress alone. Otherwise, don't expect another GNR album here, even with Duff McKagan playing bass.

4 out of 5 stars rocks off.......2004-11-19

This disk is great. Tracks 3 through 8 are excellent, as good as anything he has done. Disk highlights include coke'n, sweet caress,on down the road, and the rockers include way to go (perfect keith imitation) and monkeys. It is expensive but worth it.

5 out of 5 stars BEST IZZY ALBUM - AMAZINGLY UNDERRATED!!!!.......2004-07-10

***

Izzy was to Guns n Roses what Dee Dee was to the Ramones: the heart of the band as far as writing the songs.

Every album he has recorded is a good (if not great) example of how good and simple rock can be;

This album, On Down The Road, his fifth solo album, is no different. Actually, it is the best he's ever recorded, because it has THE BEST SONG OF THE LAST TEN YEARS on it: Sweet Caress. What a nice song! It is so beautiful! Just as good as Patience, if not better.

The album has also other GREAT tracks, like You Betcha (great rocker), Monkey's ("This town is full of monkeys, living in a zoo"), On Down The Road (another great laid-back rocker Izzy-style), Coke'n (yet another good track) and Lot To Learn (this is almost as good as Sweet Caress).

And Izzy sings better than EVER!

The other tracks are NOT on the superb level of these, but are definetely GOOD, wich makes this album - as HIGH PRICED as it is - a VERY worthy purchase!

Oh, if you happen to enjoy good rock, get your hands also on Dee Dee Ramone's album "I hate freaks like you". IT IS SO GOOD, and just like this album, very, very UNKNOWN to pretty much everyone.

4 out of 5 stars His best since "117 Degrees".......2003-07-30

This album is somewhat less punk-influenced than its immediate predecessors, and more reminicent of Izzy's first solo album, the magnificent "Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds".

It doesn't have quite as many memorable songs, and it is perhaps less musically versatile, but "On Down The Road" holds its own with tracks like the tough rocker "You Bet'Cha", the ballad "Sweet Caress", the fine, acoustic "Got Some News", a cover of the Glimmer Twins' "Please Go Home", and the driving title track.

It is almost on par with Izzy's fine second album, "117 Degrees", and better, more varied, and more accessible (in my opinion) than his two Japanese albums "Ride On" and "River".
3 1/2 stars (and when it's .5 you round up to the nearest whole number!).

4 out of 5 stars Good enough for me!.......2003-04-17

The first time that I heard the album I didn't like at all, but then, I started to listening carefully, and then I started to love it. It's a very good work, not the best, but very, very good. Just good enough for me!

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks.......2004-02-22

This is a great album, and I always crank it loud when I'm in my car driving through the desert. It sounds like that's what some of the songs are about anyway. Also, there is some great songwriting and interesting twists that balance out the hard rock with some other moods. Izzy was the main songwriter of GnR and it shows here. So Ride On, Baby.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as previous efforts.......2003-12-02

"Ride On" is certainly not a bad album, especially not if you prefer Izzy Stradlin at his most punk-ish (which I don't). But it is not as musically versatile or indeed as melodious as his two best records, "117°" and the superb, still-to-be-recognized classic "Izzy Stradlin And The Ju Ju Hounds".
I prefer Izzy's previous blend of hard rock and acoustic blues-rock, but "Ride On" has its moments as well. There's just a little bit too far between them.

    5 out of 5 stars Izzy's Best Album!.......2000-08-13

Ride on is really rocks! Izzy really seems to have recaptured the raw vibe of AFD and Right Next Door to Hell, Perfect Crime and Double Talkin' Jive from UYI I; especially on the songs Ride On, Spazed, Highway Zero and the bluesy-cool The Groper. It's much better than his first two solo albums because the sound is more GNR than wannabe Stones/Faces a la the Black Crowes like 117 degrees and Ju Ju Hounds and some of his stuff on UYI (i.e. better to do a modern synthesis of the Stones than to rip them off blatantly). The album maintains this sound throughout (with the possible exception of the blase "Needles"). As a fan who's heard Duff's "Beautiful Disease" (I never heard anything from "Believe in Me" except the title track), Slash's Snakepit's It's Five O'clock Somewhere (and four or five of the songs from "Ain't Life Grand"), Gilby Clarke's albums, Axl's "Oh My God", and the "The Spaghetti Incident", I can say with some confidence that Ride On is the best album by GNR/a GNR member since UYI II. It's just a shame Izzy didn't release it in the U.S. and thus I (and other Izzy fans) had to shell out about $30 to buy it. If you're a serious GNR fan it's worth the steep cash outlay.

If you were in it just for the singles, the price may be too steep. As was the case on his previous two albums, Izzy's vocals are mediocre. The same can be said for Izzy's lyrics. They are vague, often repetitive and generally uninspired. This is most evident on "California," "Primitive Man," "Here Comes the Rain" and "Hometown", all of which are very strong musically but lack the lyrics to match. In addition, Izzy lacks Axl's ability to be occassionally poetic or even romantic.

Overall, if you're a fan who needs a strong power ballad on every album, look elsewhere. But if you're like me and think ballads are just a nice way of using terraced dynamics to make a great guitar solo stand out, this is for you. It's the closest glimpse of what GNR could have been if they did not break up.

    3 out of 5 stars it's good izzy, but.............2000-07-24

i am a huge fan of izzy. during guns, post guns. any izzy is good izzy. his first cd was a truly great album that even the rolling stones themselves could only wish they still had in them. that was a good album. his second disc 117 degrees was an even better album. this one Ride On falls short to me. i love it, but it could have been more. some of the tunes are great. the title track whips along like rock n' roll should. bouncy, a little cocky, and fun. spaced is cool tune reminiscent of rocks-era aerosmith. however highway zero sounds so intense. you can actually see somebody getting chased by the cops while the songs is playing. the rest of the tracks here seem a little under cooked. it's not a total loss, you just feel like the ride on this cd went a bit longer.

    5 out of 5 stars Rock N' Roll Baby!.......2000-06-30

Straight up, no bones rock n' roll. This is why GN'R died when Izzy left, he was the one with the sound...

5 out of 5 stars Possibly his Best.......2001-06-16

This album rocks, when i first put it in, i didnt know what to expect, as you know Izzy's style changes from album to album, but by the time the first song was a quarter way into it, i was hooked. And the rest of the album didnt let me down at all, i didnt know what to expect from the two Reggae songs on there, but i must say that they are not too shabby, i guess Izzy can do whatever he wants to and pull it off. I would greatly reccomend any Izzy fan on picking this one up, you wont be disapointed....

      5 out of 5 stars Great Izzy!.......2007-01-11

Usually I don't buy singles but this one contains 2 extra songs from the first Iz'album.Good surprise for me!

      4 out of 5 stars Showcase.......2006-08-05

A true example of what Izzy is all about. The album is so worth getting becasue there are much better songs, but here in this four song single is a showcase of Izzy at his hardrock best with explorations into reggae as well. Came Unglued must be a reflection on Axel's mind coming 'undone' and really points to how much frustration Izzy must have been feeling in his last days of Guns N' Roses. This little collection of songs is a big statement!
