About the Artist
Mandarin's music has been described by others as "textural, subtly complex, beautiful, loud and dynamic at times, with as much emphasis placed on mood as structure." They have that unique ability to play forcefully and quietly at the same time. Driftline is restrained without being relaxed, keeping the pressure on even when the sound's down and the pace slows. A brief description of the Denton Texas based band yields that elements of rock, country, classical, and others can be heard in their sound. Their music is the end result of a highly collaborative writing process which utilizes five unique and contrasting styles. With the help of producer David Willingham, Mandarin captured this sound at the Echo Lab in the fall of 1999.

5 out of 5 stars drums make it.......2004-09-05

The percussionist, David Douglas, makes this album work. The vocalist could be better - but the drum riffs are absolutely mindblowing. If Dave could sing as well as he can hit the drums, he could be a solo act. Drums so musical, you don't even realize you're listening to percussion - rim shots, cymbals and a thumpin' beat when necessary. Beautiful work.

5 out of 5 stars Quality CD.......2003-01-09

I really love this cd. It has a real mellow contemplative feel to it, and is musically very sound. If I had to classify it, it would be in a genre called "indie dream folk space rock." If that helps any at all. Never been good at categorizing music. How about, it sounds like beauty, so go buy now.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Finest Rock Albums of the Century.......2002-03-20

I heard Mandarin for the first time from a tape a friend gave to me. This band that featured Brian Smith, the former drummer for Lift to Experience, which was then and now my favorite band. Anyways, I heard them and was shocked at their extreme amount of creativity and talent. Some moments of the album are very relaxing and take me to places I've never been before, beautiful places, somewhat images of my own Heaven. And other moments take me to creepy places, where the music gets slow yet really heavy. They are probably influenced by old jazz music blended with mordern european americana style of music, still keeping together most of their indie music influence. I wen to see Lift to Experience at the Ridglea Theater here in Fort Woth, and it came to my surprise that Mandarin was an opening band, and i became almost just as anxious to see them as Lift to Experience. I would highly recomend this album to lovers of Radiohead and Pedro the Lion (which, of course, are two of my other faves). From beginning to end this album continues to amaze me to this day. BYE IT NOW!

4 out of 5 stars post-rock a la americana.......2001-04-13

Hearing this cd you only need to know two names: Tortoise and Calexico. Mandarin go to the roots of americana, but do it in their own way. They're from Austin and before this album I never heard of them. I don't even know if they ever made another record. Driftline is an album of integrity. Some ambient-like parts, which refer to bands such as Tortoise and dEUS. If you like somethimg different, then listen to this album.
