5 out of 5 stars Best since Priest=Aura, but don't take their lyrics at face value.......2007-06-20

Just wanted to add my two cents in on JSG's review:

I loved your post and your passion for one of my favorite bands. But I don't think you're interpreting some of their lyrics correctly. Specifically, while highlighting some of your favorite lines, you wrote:

Block: "even Jesus Christ was betrayed by a kiss" - how sad and true

I don't think that's how Kilbey meant it. He has always been a bit of an eccentric (in a Robyn Hitchcock vein), his lyrics full of word play, dark romance, mystical exploration, occasional menace and deep irony. And it's irony (perhaps tinged with sarcasm) being used at the end of Block, with it's thank you list of items he'd rather not have (its a form of word play he used similarly in his non sequitur "welcome" list on MAGICIAN AMONG THE SPIRIT). So I don't believe he was sadly or reverently recounting the bible in that line; in fact, when you highlighted that line in your review you really pulled those words out of their greater context (including the pithy "Why" that begins that sentence). You have to read (and hear) that line in context with the full list of things he's NOT really thankful for, which concludes this way:

Thank you to the Lord who created all this
There's a whole lot of hurt before you get to the bliss
Why, even Jesus Christ was betrayed by a kiss
But that was long before he got in show biz

Just because they're called The Church, does not mean they're a pro-Christian band like U2 (who wear their religion quite respectfully, which is why no one minds their viewpoint). No, The Church have always been open to darker interpretations of the meaing of existence, and I don't think they believe the Christian "lord" is any more superior to other ancient gods of myth and legend.

Didn't mean to get too deep, here. Just wanted to clear that up for anyone interested in this magnificent album. It's definitely their best work since Priest = Aura and the songs and guitar work are fabulous. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars great, as usual.......2007-05-25

I don't know how these guys stay so fresh, and vital. This is another great album, and once again they've managed to come up with a new twist while retaining their signature sound. The album bristles with ideas, they've never gone through the motions, and evidently they never will. And, oh yeah, they write a great batch of songs each time too. Well done boys!

5 out of 5 stars The Church at their best.......2007-03-09

I read a review written some time ago by a fellow who was so excited to receive this CD and then so disappointed he went for a walk. I feel bad for that guy because if he hasn't revisited this CD he is missing out on a classic. Like most Church CDs they require several listens before appreciated. Does that mean it is an aquired taste? No, it's just that most Church fans usually have a pre-conceived notion of what they are going to hear on the CD (like every opening song is going to be another Anaesthesia or Priest=Aura) and when it's not, they get horribly disappointed, tuck the CD away, and pout for a few days, until they decide to try it again and end up discovering that it is much more satisfying in the long-run. The reason they called Bubble-gum pop "bubble-gum" is because it tastes great at first then quyickly loses it's flavor. The Church are not bubble-gum pop, so if that is what you are seeking, look elsewhere.

This CD has a grit and an edge to it unlike any other Church CD. If you don't find your teeth clinching and fists gripping after the line "thank you to my friends and the friends that you're with" in Block, then you are a lost cause and nothing will move you. That song just builds, and grinds, and...

Personal favorite moments:
Block: "even Jesus Christ was betrayed by a kiss", how sad and true
Unified Field: hmmm, can you say Blurred Crusade meets HOB?
She'll Come Back: the one I hum at work all day long
Pure chance: Pure bliss, listen to this and just watch your blood pressure sink
Never Before: the blowout at the end, the storm after the calm
Day 5: what a space epic of "biblical" proportions (we all know who exited quietly)
Song to Go: a monumental way to finish the CD, love the electrified voice in the middle.

OK, I can't go without saying the Beside Yourself is an undiscovered gem. Jazz (unbelievable song, never leaves your head, love the last chorus where the music just overtakes the quite beautiful vocals), Hit Spacebar, Nervous Breakthrough (nice, edgy vocals, makes me a little nervous, best line "nice to eat, I mean meet someone new"), The illusion Mysteries (mmm, sticky wine), and of course Cantilever (that line is "cut was so clean, right?") You better get a hold of this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Band In The World.......2007-02-13

This criminally underrated Australian rock group is my all-time favorite band. Since 1981 they've released one great album after another, and their latest is one of their best. Steve Kilbey's cool vocals, his interesting stream-of-consciousness lyrics, two exhilarating guitarists - Marty Willson-Piper, Peter Koppes - and Tim Powles, a drummer with great production skills, make for an all-round class act.

4 out of 5 stars Another strong Church album.......2007-01-08

This was an album that didn't immediately grab me, then worked its way under my skin over a matter of months.

The Church has managed to maintain an amazingly solid career for a band whose biggest hit, "Under the Milky Way," was nearly 20 years ago. With a few minor stumbles in the 90s and some drug problems in the past decade, it doesn't seem like the band should be so vital, but in the past few years, they've turned out some of their best albums in well over a decade. Steve Kilbey's chant-styled vocals may not be for everyone, but if you ever enjoyed the Church, now's the time to check back in on them.

      Album Description

Twenty-five years into a career that long ago gave up any pretensions of the Top 40 and boasting a line-up with three original members and one newbie, Powles, who has been there a decade, the Church are feeling damn fine. Perky. Downy fresh, you could say. The band have spent the last five years making music as they desire, without regard for current trend, trusting in the traditional virtues of talent, chemistry and good taste to guide them, an approach that has served them well for over twenty years. Cooking Vinyl. 2006.
