A great find!.......2007-07-15
If you don't own any Sister Hazel yet, you really should check out Chasing Daylight and their last album, Absolutely, which is also loaded with greatness. Everyone needs at least 2 or 3 Sister Hazel albums to just put on at a party and then forget about needing to change the music. And if you watch their "rockumentary" DVD, "A Life in the Day", you'll see why those of us in Florida love to catch them live in concert . . . early and often!
Great Great and just GREAT!!.......2007-07-15
Come on everybody!! , there is no band who writes songs like these do.
Here in holland some songs are used for commercials, and that's not what the songs are used for.
The songs need to be on radio for everyone to hear and buy!!
This album is a really great one, i rank it higher than LIFT and i think it's fair enough to say LIFT is GREAT but the weakests of al SH albums.
My favorite album is still to this date ' Chasing daylight' and its one of my all time favo albums!!
They say this album is all leftover!!, damn then i wanna hear everything else!!
This is just to great to be not released.
SWEET DESTINY and Sail AWAY or my favo songs of the album and there is not one bad song on here!!
Damn i LOve sister hazel!!!!
THANX GUYS
FAN FROM HOLLAND
Best Band Ever.......2007-07-09
Most of the tracks go along the same lines as the band's previous records. There are the upbeat feel-good songs like Grand Canyon, and Sail Away, which takes you right into the Rock Boat, the band's yearly music festival at sea. Then there are the beautifully written ballads like Sweet Destiny, On Your Mind, and Mona Lisa.
For the fans who are always eager to hear the band doing something different, there's the punk-rock of Work In Progress, and the heavier Mosquito. But the one thing that is never different is that there is not one bad song in the whole album. Pretty soon you forget that these are songs you didn't know a short time ago, and each and every one of them becomes like an old friend you often find yourself thinking about.
The cover of BAM! shows the guys as superheroes, and that's what they really are. Time and again they manage to write a song that relates so completely with what is going on in our lives, it makes us feel like someone out there understands us, we're not alone and everything will be all right in the end. For me, this time, it's What Kind of Living, a catchy song about being stuck in a relationship going nowhere. Sister Hazel has saved my life more than once in this way, by bringing music and beauty to every kind of feeling, and for that they really are my superheroes.
Any Sister Hazel fan absolutely must have this album, because the collection would be incomplte without it. And anyone who is not yet a Sister Hazel fan... it's time to start! So turn up the volume, add a little BAM! to the Ginger Ale, and go have fun with this newest Hazel journey!
ZAP, WHAM, BAM!.......2007-06-30
Thanking our lucky stars that these 5 musicians and the various other artists helping with producing, mixing, or playing their instruments, have produced this passionate, fun, lively CD! Anxiously awaiting more BAM!!! :O)

If innovation is the yardstick by which you measure the worth of a rock band, Sister Hazel won't measure up very well. The Gainesville, Florida, septet is the very definition of a mainstream jangle-pop band, and you've heard their brand of music before, most recently from the likes of Hootie & the Blowfish, Edwin McCain, matchbox twenty, and Third Eye Blind. But in terms of sheer tunefulness and the way their melodies and lyrics lodge in your frontal lobe, Sister Hazel's songs on Fortress can make efforts by the other bands seem pale in comparison. The group's third album leads with "Change Your Mind," a feel-good summer song if ever there was one. Simple, straightforward guitar-based tunes like "Shame on Me," "Fortress," "Save Me," and "Champagne High" (featuring Indigo Girl Emily Saliers) ring with high harmonies and hook-filled choruses. If nothing else, Sister Hazel proves that it's not necessary to reinvent the wheel every time a band puts out a record. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:
Outstanding!!.......2006-11-08
First of all, I hadn't heard anything like them before. I'm a big fan of early 90's power rock and the reason I was so instantly drawn to them when I first heard their music coming from my housemates bedroom was that here was a fairly modern band sticking to their roots and not compromising their style. This album has a wanderful sounds production with the occasionally bassey crunch chords and crisp accoustic picking. The style is a mixture of southern rock, emphasised by Ken Blocks highly likeable vocals and Ryan Newells sliding guitar solo's, a bit of Chili peppers style funk and a bit of blink 182 style pop rock. I have a couple of Hootie and the blowfish albums and I've heard some counting crows before and I have to say that these only sound vaguely similar on surface level. Every song on this album is good, especially Drew Copelands strange cup tea with such a good mixture of songs from the emotional CHampeign high and Your winter to the highly catchy Shame on me and change your mind.
The thing that makes this better than their other albums in my opinion is the whole overall production of it. After their first two albums which took on a more simple accoustic style, this came out and just abandoned everything they had made themselves into. Fast and funky guitar solo's, innovative riffs and crunchy chords and a whole new dimention to Ken Blocks vocals. Chasing daylight provided more of the same, but there was something missing from the album that fortress had, possibly more diversity in the songs. After fortress their style started leaning more towards the blink 182 style keeping it more musically simple, but still just as catchy.
GET HOOKED ON HAZEL!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-25
Great all around.......2006-06-13
Even *I* like it.......2005-09-25
Okay? Okay. Now, about this CD: I don't get it. How did Sister Hazel escape superstardom? How on earth did "Fortress" slip past the Grammy people? I don't have many pop/rock CDs where I'd consider every track a keeper - count 'em on one hand you have enough fingers left over for a wide selection of rude gestures. But not only isn't there a bad track on "Fortress"; there's not even a mediocre one.
Why? Number one: the music is masterful. The tunes are at once melodic enough to hum but complex enough to tickle the brain. The musicianship - especially the guitar work - is not just good, it makes you *feel* good. If these guys aren't enjoying themselves, they're putting on a heckuvan act.
Number two: the lyrics are witty and intelligent. Not only that, they're fun. Given a microphone, many bands these days (like composers of grand opera before them) wallow in self-pity or throw what amount to brat-tizzies set to music. Not Sister Hazel. I'm struck by the upbeat, positive mood in most of the songs. Even the done-me-wrong downers are clever, and often, like "Elvis," funny... in a quirky, backhanded sort of way.
This is pick-me-up music all the way. It practically winks and grins at you out of the speakers. The playing and production are seamless. Put it on after a really bad day at work and watch how fast the world rights itself. Sister Hazel: Now I know where you are, I'm coming after you... or at least, after more of your albums.
This one's a keeper.......2005-09-24

Sister Hazel's best album yet.......2006-12-28
In our family of six musicians, each one of us has a different favorite song. I love "Meet me in the memory" with words that resonate and a melody that plays itself over in my head all day. The kids love "Tear by tear", a melancholy story of loss and depression, with un underlying uplifting message. They love the music and "words that are like a poem."
"Beautiful high" is addictive and the harmonies engaging. I'm not sure what the other reviewers are talking about in criticizing the harmonies or the mixing of this album. We just don't see it.
This is another great by one of the great rock bands of our time - discover Sister Hazel before the rest of the world does. If you are used to buying albums where you find yourself skipping tracks, or feeling let down after the first 3 songs, this album will shock you with its depth. You'll be hooked through to the end. If you don't own any Hazel yet, this is a great place to start. Then work your way backwards with Chasing Daylight and Fortress. What's not to love about Sister Hazel? It's no surprise this album is at the top of the alternative rock lists right now - this may finally be their breakthrough.
All I know is I LOVE being with you..........2006-12-19
Personal favorites: "Hey Hey", "Truth Is", "Beautiful High", "Mandolian Moon", and "Little Black Heart". "Little Black Heart" is the hidden track is definitely worth it.
Also, Sister Hazel recently appeared a survey on the website Rate The Music, which is pretty fantastic considering it's a website that sends out surveys asking people to rate popular music. Good things to come for Sister Hazel...

Gainesville, Florida's Sister Hazel would have you believe that resuming indie status has given the band renewed vitality, and judging by the sheer force of Chasing Daylight, you'd probably be inclined to agree. Opening with a trio of songs that are shamelessly buoyant, the band makes clear its determination to craft anthems, and they're not about to let lost love stand in the way of a hooky chorus, as songs like opening track "Your Mistake" make clear. The relatively somber ballad "Best I'll Ever Be" divides the disc between its utterly accessible first half and slightly more adventurous last half, but generally speaking, the quintet stays on point, delivering smooth, sing-songy country-dusted roots-rock full of wide-open spaces and palpable longing. Skynyrd is subtly noted in the dirty guitar graffitied across the opening of "Swan Dive," though their Florida brethren never had the vocal harmonies mustered by Sister Hazel at full tilt. And while a full string section adds shadow and nuance to these compositions, Chasing Daylight is straight-up, radio-friendly, and as comfortable as worn denim. --Kim HughesAlbum Description
The band opted to move more from the major label mainstream back to their grass-roots fan base with this indie release. Chasing Daylight shows Sister Hazel's growth with everything from rock mantras to moving ballads. Sixthman label. 2002.Customer Reviews:

SH Rocks!!!.......2005-09-17
This album is great because it's not trying to break into pop culture. It's semi-pop, quasi-country southern rock that represents the band's roots to a "t": a southern college town. That's probably why G'ville is only place in the world where chain bookstores and music outlets sell out of their albums on a daily basis. And no one has had the full experience of SH until they've been to a G'ville show (seriously, when the whole crowd breaks into the chorus of "All For You", or more recently when the guys did "A little like Heaven" from Drew Copeland's solo debut, and we all went insane, the (literally!) five minute standing ovations... you just have to be there!)
I highly recommend to anyone, though if you haven't been initiated yet, make sure you go back to the older albums too!

An Amazing Album.......2005-12-16
After hearing about this live album, aptly named "Live live," I quickly picked up a copy and I'm glad I did. While I was slightly disappointed by "Lift" (which I got just prior to Live Live), I was overjoyed at the quality of this excellent live album.
If you love Sister Hazel, you shouldn't be without this album. 'Nuff said.
I was there! .......2004-12-02
LIVE and kicking!.......2004-03-20
-I've heard the artist live and loved it
-There's some intangible about their live collection
that I can't get anywhere else
I live not far from Gainesville, the band's college-town home, and have had the opportunity to enjoy them many times in different settings. I wasn't at either of the sessions used for "Live*LIVE!"....September 2003 performances at The House of Blues in Orlando and an appearance at The Masquerade club in historic Ybor City, a
long-time music venue in Tampa.
But the key to Sister Hazel's live performances is their connection with the audience. There's a band charisma that nearly leaps off the stage, that you sometimes can't feel in their studio albums (although all three have been superb).
The sets from Orlando are relatively free of crowd noise other than opening and closing applause, but the Tampa sets feature a rowdy back-up group in the audience who know all the words and sing at will. The only song that is overwhelmed by this is the first disc's "All for You", SH's biggest hit to date. It has been, over the years, stupefied by too much radio airplay, so you almost welcome a new version with "crowd sing".
Best of the tunes?
Disc One:
"Life Got In The Way" - a great opener, gets everyone's juices flowing....
"I wanted us to be the one that poets write their books about"....
"Just Remember" - hot guitar jams lead in and surround the song-- some great a capella voice harmonies by Block/Copeland offset a middling set of lyrics on this crowd pleaser
"Come Around" Block's voice is unmistakable and distinctive on this love song. Some of the lyrics on "Come Around" are visual poetry...
Disc Two:
"Your Winter"(also featured on the soundtrack of the movie "10 Things I Hate About You") and "Killing Me Too" are two of my favorite Sister Hazel songs. Quieter, and more introspective, both allow Block's plaintive upper register to shine through. Somehow the romantic insecurities that come through seem like Block's own. Perhaps they are. In "Killing Me Too", there's a surprise build up and crescendo at song's end that demonstrates just how well these boys play music.
"Sword and Shield" (recorded in Tampa), also graces disc 2. It's a departure from most of the S&H songs in theme - it is strangely and compellingly not contemporary in lyrics. It feels like it may have been written with a sound track in mind, although I don't think it appeared with any film. Copeland's harmonies are particularly haunting on the song, which features not only unique lyrics, but a more insistent beat.
There's really nothing not to like on the 2 disc set. One of my prior favorites, "Champagne High" sounds like less of a song because the band misses the back up vocals from Indigo Girl Emily Salier that appeared on the studio version.
College bar-band, maybe, by origin, but they've transcended far beyond that medium to one of the richest sounds of the south. Great music to sing along to when you're driving!
CHAMPAGNE HIGH.......2004-02-27
Sister Hazel's Live Album does not disappoint. While it focuses on the Chasing Daylight release, it can be also called a "Greatest Hits' recording. Of course it includes their one-hit wonder, All for Your, but also includes their best stuff from other albums like Champagne High, Your Mistake, and Change Your Mind.
My only fear is that sometimes a live recording either means a hiatus, or to fulfill a contractual obligation because of a band break-up. Crossing my fingers, I hope only the former is true and not the latter. It would be a shame Sister Hazel would no longer grace us with their pleasant poetry.
Someplace so familiar.......2004-02-04
I listened through the most known songs: All For You, Champagne High, Your Winter, Happy and Change Your Mind. I listened to live and artistically styled versions of Swan Dive, Superman and Out There and twenty songs later I wondered for the millionth time why this band does not receive more radio play.
I personally love live cds. I think this is a true way to check the talent of a band you think you love. I particularly like the changes made in a live show versus what you will continually hear from a studio version. I like hearing the fans echo my excitement at home. SH did not let me down. I was thrilled to hear that the sound I have experienced at their shows was able to be captured on a compact disc. I also felt like you could hear that the band members really enjoy playing together.
If you have ever hummed along to a song by Sister Hazel it is to your musical health benefit to pick up this cd. The harmonies, the lyrics and the nuances in Ken Block's voice are beyond compare. They transcend southern rock at some points, blues at others, kitschy pop, great guitar and just plain fun. The band is not complicated, it is just good music.
While you have the cd playing, listen to the fans in this live recording and you will realize one of the best kept musical secrets is Sister Hazel.
My thanks to Ken, Drew, Ryan, Jett and Mark for putting this collection together. For my musical health.

Mysterious, lyrical, and as musically powerful as ever . . . .......2006-10-09
All us Hazelnuts have one thing in common -- it's like a secret handshake -- we're all perplexed at why they're not more famous! We love the intimacy of seeing them live up close and personal with all their wonderful humility at their own fame. But it really is time the world discovers them for what they are: an incredibly talented, inspiring, powerful rock band that should be covering the airwaves. If you are even THINKING about buying this album because you already know how good they are, go ahead. You'll be glad you've got it in your collection.
just one more step up.......2006-03-20
LIFT FELL.......2006-03-19
They gained momentum with good, innovative, songwriting and did better with every subsequent release ... until now. While Lift is pretty good in its own rite, it still disappointed. Perhaps expectations were too high.
Of course it is hard to be constantly creative and innovative. The Beatles had Ob-Da-La, and Steven Spielberg has 1941.
It seemed this time they tried too hard to pass that combination of fun, innovative music with their thoughtful lyrics.
Usually, they focus on love and life. Lift, though, focuses on self-improvement, higher consciousness, and change. It seems they may have had some sort of epiphanny--which is not bad. Frankly, some of their past stuff had subtle spiritual messages.
World Inside My Head is a good example, and one of the better ones on this album. The lyrics, more thoughtful and reflective, help the listener identify with their struggles: "The pain on me/is drying but its not what I'd like it to be."
My favorite is "Another Me" which laments, "I'm looking for another me/one in-between the burn and the lesson learned/'cause being me ain't no way to be."
Yes, the human condition is prevalent, but their pilgrimage really did not find any solutions. Then, again, maybe its hard to find solutions. Even U2 still hasn't found what they're looking for.
The lack of liveliness is what hurts this album.
Firefly is about the only one I liked that really combined energy with fun.
The largest drawback was a cover of the old Cars song, Just What I Needed. I don't like cover songs for the same reason I dislike movie remakes: it's alredy been done so it doesn't need to be done again.
I'm sure Sister Hazel will bounce back. I hear they are in the studio now working on something new for eary Summer 2006.
Hopefully it will be ... somewhat more familiar.
More great hooks than a championship fishing tackle box.......2006-02-19
You guys that have been disappointed by Lift relative to other Sister Hazel efforts...hey, you're entitled to your opinions, but to me, this is by far their most mature and diverse effort. The opening tracks, "Surrender" and "Lay It Down", are simply 2 of their best tunes ever, with a harder edge than most of their stuff, while still retaining the awesome melodies and harmonies that mark Sister Hazel music. "World Inside My Head" is a very competent mid-tempo ballad with some power and pop to it. "Hold On" and "I Will Come Through" at first impressed me as weaker tunes, but at the second and third listens, they got better and better sounding...solid songs, among the better efforts on most CDs of most artists in this genre. "All About the Love" is simply an awesome tune, with "In the Moment" and "Dreamers" being two more solid efforts. "Another Me" may be the best song on the CD, if not for "Surrender". And the cover of "Just What I Needed" is quite frankly, tremendous. The other songs on the CD aren't quite up to the ones I've mentioned, but "Firefly", "Erin", "Green" are all catchy tunes in their own rights. One of the best things about this Hazel effort is the mix of the different tempos and the arrangements among the CD's songs. Hazel music has a certain sound, but on Lift, they were able to mix it up where you don't get the feeling you're listening to the same sound over and again....also, the maturity level and musical growth of the band on this CD is quite apparent...they're stretching out a little, and not being so formulaic.
Sister Hazel's best studio work to date.

Catchy..........2003-06-06
This isn't one of my favorite cds, but when I try to find something wrong with it, I can't really think of anything. The songs are really catchy and you get them stuck in your head whenever you listen to the cd. Sometimes the cd starts getting a little too blues-like for my tastes, but then that goes away.
I probably won't buy another CD from the band because they sound too much like other bands like Hootie and the Blowfish and Counting Crows, but if you do like any of these bands with that type of sound, go buy the CD!
Just plain ol' good music!.......2001-09-19
Whether I like "Somewhere More Familiar" or "Fortress" less or more than the self-titled "Sister Hazel" all depends on the day that you ask me. "Sister Hazel" is undoubtedly more bluesey than the others, especially prominent in "Will Not Follow" and "Bring It On Home" which also draws on some obvious gospel influences. You'll find yourself bee-boppin' to the upbeats of "Feel It" and "Sometimes". The toned down harmonious version of "All for You" while heartfelt reminds me a little too much of Extreme's "More Than Words" to be my favorite version, but still an 'ok' rendition.
All in all, I still find myself continually impressed with the five member band from Gainesville Florida. They're well worth the listen.

Better than Fortress -- almost as good as SMF!.......2000-10-04
