4 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview for the Casual Fan.......2004-09-13

Growing up in Belgium in the seventies, I can't remember that the Dutch band Golden Earring was ever NOT big. That was 30 years ago! I left Belgium in the early 80s, and admittedly I've lost track somewhat of Golden Earring since then. When I saw this collection during a recent visit to Belgium, I looked at the tracklisting, and immediately knew this would be perfect for me.

"The Devil Made Us Do It: Golden Earring 35 Years" (39 tracks, 155 min.) is thankfully presented in chronological order. CD1 cover 1965-1975, and is by far the most interesting. From the very first single "Please Go" one can follow the evolution of Dutch pop/rock in the 60s, just fascinating. The band really starts to hit all cylinders on the hard-charging "Back Home" (from 1970) and "Buddy Joe" (from 1972), both big hits. The monster hit "Radar Love" is of course on here. CD2 covers 1976-2000, and contains big hits like "Bombay" and "Sleepwalking". As mentioned already, I lost track of the band in the mid 80s, after their last big international hit "Twilight Zone". But the band has continued to churn out hit after hit (and album after album) in their home market (Netherlands and surrounding areas).

This collection is highly recommended for the casual fan who just wants all the hits and best known tracks in one convenient place. As noted elsewhere, there is also a 4 CD box, issued at the same time as this collection, and (confusingly) also named "The Devil Made Us Do It", which contains much more.

4 out of 5 stars Some bad choices and lots of good stuff left out.......2004-08-11

My big gripe with Golden Earring's well-known compilation album, The Continuing Story Of Radar Love, is that their second-greatest song ("When The Lady Smiles") after "Twilight Zone", is not included. It's unspeakable to issue a compilation album to US audiences and NOT include their greatest non-US hit. Luckily, you'll find it here.

To be honest, the first part of the album is pretty much throw-away. It's mostly their 60's material, and I don't find it that appealing. The exception to this is the beautifully sung ballad "Just A Little Bit Of Peace In My Heart". "Please Go" is interesting as it was the bands' very first in a long line of Dutch hits.

Things don't really heat up until the 14th or 15th track. Hits like "Radar Love", "Twilight Zone", "Quiet Eyes", and "Going To The Run" (the latter two are excellent power ballds that were hits in Europe but are completely unknown to American audiences). "Clear Nite, Moonlight" is a fun 80's dance song with a bit of disco thrown in, "Sleepwalkin'" is a jazzy, bass-driven song in the vein of "Radar Love", and "Yes! We're On Fire!" was actually used as the Dutch Olympic team's anthem.

Some of the choices, however, I don't agree with, but isn't that always the case with compilation albums? "Hold Me Now" off of the Face It album should have been replaced with the high-adrenaline rocker "Legalize Telepathy". "I Do Rock 'N Roll" is an embarrasingly mediocre song with idiotic lyrics that simply wastes time on the album and could have been replaced by more material from the Bloody Buccaneers. Also, we could have taken out of the lousy 60's music and replaced it with some live tracks (GE is truly a live band), or something from Bloody Buccaneers, Moontan, Together, Prisoner Of The Night, or The Hole.

"The Continung Story Of Radar Love" is a better, more common, and cheaper compilation, but it does leave out some outstanding material (no "When The Lady Smiles?!!). So, hell, I say start by picking up "The Continuing Story" (you won't need Moontan with this), Last Blast Of The Century, Blody Buccaneers, NEWS, Cut, Something Heavy Going Down. If you like 80's music you may also enjoy The Hole.

3 out of 5 stars Abridged version of the 4-disc box set.......2001-01-28

Made in GER in 2000, Serial# 549-154-2, Playing Time: 155 min.

This 2-disc set is perhaps intended at presenting a "best of" of the 4-disc "Best Of" of the same name; but which tracks to include when a band has released 29 albums (33 discs) in 35 years? Certainly not by making half the material included here from the first 10! I would suggest you take a few minutes and go read the reviews of the full-length 4-disc version of this album.

This 2-disc version contains 39 tracks, more specifically tracks 1 to 22 (16 and 21 are shorter),24,26-29,32-35,38,41-43,49,53-55 from the box set; we're getting all tracks from disc 1 (the first 10 years), about half of each of disc 2 and 3 (the next 25 years) but missing out on anything from disc 4 (rare tracks, solo material, unreleased material).

If you're seriously interested in this group, get the "real mccoy": go for the 4-disc version, crammed with over 5 hours of great stuff from this Dutch band. Just say I made you do it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2006-07-23

Golden earring has been one of my favorite bands for many years. Because of the enormous number of albums the band has released, it is hard to put together a complete collection. But this is a good collection to sample Golden Earring's music including solo pursuits.
I am a huge fan of their music from the mid-seventies through mid-eighties. I own all the albums in this timeline, but this collection gives me a good sample of their other sounds.
The collection is smartly packaged with a book of the band's history covering the songs on the CD's. The book is in Dutch - which I think is very cool (Golden Earring is true to their loyal backbone of fans - their home crowd). The English translation can be found on their website.
The band has a complete shift in sound from their beginning to present. This is a nice collection for the die-hard GE fan.

4 out of 5 stars The Devil Made Us Do It.......2004-10-29

The Devil Made Us Do It was released as box a two disc CD and a four disc boxset. This is the expensive, box set version that includes songs from the 60's-90's as well as solo tracks, live tracks, and B-sides. I have to say that I'm very pleased with some of the track choices, but I disagree with the inclusion of some as well.

DISC 1

Disc 1 is made up of their early work, spanning from 1965 to 1974. Naturally, the classic "Radar Love" is included, as well as their very first song, "Please Go", and fan favorites "Another 45 Miles" and "She Flies On Strange Wings". I have to say that I'm really not into 60's music, so their songs from that decade really don't do much for me. Songs that I would have liked to see included are "A Thousand Feet Below You", "Avalanche Of Love", "Candy's Going Bad", "From Heaven, From Hell", and "See See", as opposed to "In My House", "Don't Run Too Far", and "Dong-Dong-Diki-Digi-Dong". They are certainly superior songs and I'm sure GE knows it as well but I suppose that what the record company had a hand in it.

DISC 2

Disc 2 is made up of tracks from 1975-1984. What really peeves me off here is including the ridiculously stupid rap-like song "NEWS". The song sucks and the video sucks, period. There was no need to include it. Also, "I Do Rock 'N Roll" is a weak, lazy, lifeless song with unintelligent lyrics that only sounds decent when performed live. Sleepwalking is also one of those must-hear-live-to-appreciate songs. The version that really rocks is on Second Live although that album has a problem with too loud of a bass. Songs that should have been included are "Will And Mercy", "Mission Impossible", "Lost And Found", "Future". But "Twilight Zone", "Long Blond Animal", "When The Lady Smiles", and "Clear Nite Moonlight" are all present and accounted for.

DISC 3

Disc 3 spans 1986-1999. First of all, I frown on the popularity and inclusion of "Angel". I just don't see what's so appealing about the song. It's not catchy and it has absolutely no hooks or interesting riffs. It does nothing for me. "Legalize Telepathy" from the same album (Face It) would have been a MUCH better choice. And, while Temporary Madness is a good song (everything from Bloody Buccaneers is good), I can't condone including that song instead of the much-loved and excellent "In A Bad Mood". Plus, I would have liked another selection from the Love Sweat cover album besides the dull "This Wheel's On Fire." How about "Turn The Page" and "Gotta See Jane?" I would have liked to see some more from the Bloody Buccaneers album.

DISC 4

Disc 4 is a grab bag of rare goodies such as solo tracks and B-sides. Kudos for the wise inclusion of "Time Warp", the 1991 B-side. And God bless them for having them common sense to include the rock version of "Gimmie A Break" rather than the hideous standard version sung by George Kooymans. "The Devil Rides Again Tonight" is a lovely song from guitarist George Kooymans' 1987 solo album, although I do prefer "Lost For Love". I'm sad to see that Barry Hay's "Jezebel" from his 1987 solo album is missing. Try A Little Tenderness is a nice cover from 1996, a bonus track.

5 out of 5 stars their best compilationalbum ever.......2002-02-05

Although their Greatest hits album from 1988 was super, this one comprises their complete musiccareer and all their hits including songs never released before and rare material from the "treasurechest" some live stuff too.Plus honest and critical insight review/autobiography by their bassplayer Rinus. Plus excellent photo's One of the bestand oldest (est.1960) rockbands ever to walk on earth so they know how to rock.Get it.avaible as a 2cd greatest hits package and as a 4cd de luxe "all hits and other releases "box among which the "treasurechest cd",fullcolour biography by Rinus and loads of pic's.

4 out of 5 stars Quite a retrospective!.......2001-01-13

Made in GER in 2000, 4-disc digipak longbox, Serial#549-149-2.

First the good news: Lots of tracks (74), running over 312 minutes (the shortest CD clocks in at over 77 minutes). This retrospective covers the last 35 years of the band, including material up to their latest (29th) album, "Last Blast Of The Century".

Now the not-so-good news: The tracks featured on the first 3 discs are mostly taken from singles, but the nice part is that they're generally in full-length format. These guys have released a lot of good material, and a fair share of it is outside the "singles" market. I was a bit disappointed to see that the discography in the booklet shows pictures of the CD albums, which are sometimes different than the original (check out "Miracle Mirror" credited to Golden Earrins (sic)). You still get your money's worth if you're unfamiliar with most of their albums.

If you're really interested in this compilation, check out George Dezenberg's review below: I think it describes this box set pretty well. HOWEVER, I would like to make 3 corrections to his review:

1) Golden Earring didn't go through a heavy metal period. Their "heavier" stuff is probably in the mid-seventies, for the "Moontan" and "Switch" albums.

2) Disc 4 contains material that's a bit harder to find, made up generally of solo material (from Barry Hay, George Kooymans, Rinus Gerritsen, and a collaboration with LABYRINTH), b-sides, and even stuff from the bonus disc included with the "Naked Truth" album (called "The Complete Truth"). It does however contain a few unreleased tracks.

3) The 48-page booklet is in Dutch, not German...

5 out of 5 stars Yes, I'm proud to be Dutch.......2001-01-05

Great Album of a great Dutch Band, it's good to know that they've done well in the USA. Because I'm Dutch, each of these songs bring out some nice memory's :) Over here, you grew up with the Earring, they were just always there.
