Pure Bliss !!! .......2007-03-22

Aaah, what could I say about simone? I started listening to simone's Blue flame a few years back, this album grows in you, especially alqantara and mediterenea , I ve seen this band play live last month in berkeley, CA, and they played with such grace and excellence. A new song called Iraq was also played, anticipating us for another magical journey in shaheen's music. A pure soulful and graceful set of talents, melodies, and truly delightful music. Bravo !!! 10 stars !!!

EASTERN & WESTERN CLASSICS & JAZZ.......2004-03-22

If you like instrumental Music, Arabic, Western Classicas and Jazz ,then this is one of the best mixture of Middle Eastern ( Mediterranean ) and Western Classics & Jazz Music I have ever heard, it is like a fresh breath of air. I highly recommend it. I hope Mr.Simon Shaheen produces more such a wonderfull Music in near future.

Simon Shaheen is a true master of the oud and a brilliant composer. His treatment of the oriental and western musical heritage is respectful while in the same time managing to be genuinly innovative. A feat that needs a true master of improvisation to be accomplished. His virtuosity in the art of taqasim and his sensitivity towards western music reminds me of the skill and power of Udi Georgo Bacanos, the legendary turkish oud master that set the standard for generations to come. Whether you like traditional oriental music, multi-cultural jaming or time honoured jazz this album should satisfy you completely.

Ketelbey must have influenced the great film soundtrack composers .......2006-09-02

I can see how this music might have been used as accompaniment to a showing of the silent film "Thief of Baghdad", or "The Sheik", or any one of those swashbucklers. Not that the exotic was all that Ketelbey indulged in, as this CD will reveal. I recommend it highly. And for those interested in historical recordings, try the 1921 Peerless Orchestra recording of "Monastery Garden", which is part of the Library of Congress archive and which is available to listen to or to download for free as a .wav file at [...]. This is the website for Birmingham, England, the composer's birthplace.

This music helped me to be totally relaxe and completely entertained.
Of particular interest for me was "Wedgewood Blue" and "Meditation", both performed beautifully.
I highly recommend this imported German CD and add that, due to the rarity of some of the tracks, it is a good idea to not delay.

Worth the Dinar.......2007-02-16

The Story of Arabic Song is a very good musical collection of Middle Eastern music. There are so many interesting qualities to the music - and most likely attributed to my love of music and my travel to the region beginning in my teenage years. So, let's begin the analysis:

Ayouh has a melody which remind me of my travels through Morocco and northern Africa, while the screams toward the middle have the aura I've experienced passing a funeral procession in Turkey ,,, Ala Balad El Mahboub is enjoyable and has an obvious discrete level of tonality as the singer progresses through the lament ,,, Khayef Aqool is very, very soothing (my favorite) ,,, Kunt Fein has an interesting mix of Middle Eastern, western, and Indian influence - whether this fits classically, I'm not certain ,,, Hebeena --- the first half is similar to celebration songs that are played at wedding, reunions, or birthday parties - however - the middle shows that it is truly a middle eastern piece - the transition toward the end of the song is well done - reverting back to its roots ,,, Sanatein is relaxing to listen to - and its instruments - Yes ,,,, (my 2nd favorite) ---/--- The only two songs that I have not appreciated are Alla Allah Ta'Oud (boring) and Yalli Naweit (reminds me of an epic story from the 1920's put to pre-dated musical themes) ,,, Maza Aqool had good background with vocal accompaniment (although the singer was a bit nasally).

Overall, I would recommend buying it.

The best way for me to review this CD is to describe how it affected me... The first song "Ayouh" annoyed me after a while with the constantly quavering voice of the singer, and in the next the woman's voice was too piercing for me, so I advanced to the third selection, "Khayef Aqpool" which was pleasant and soulful with rich voice and instrumentation. Song number four (Kunt Fein) was smooth and passionate, and inspired me to sway and twist around the house, and number five, "Hebeena", was quite lively with a bouncing rhythm, and really got me moving. The remaining songs are a little more subdued, but they are richly textured with many contrasting and intertwining sounds: voice, clapping, and a variety of Arabic instruments blending and taking turns in the spotlight. The selections are from a variety of authentic Arabic recordings, and although not all of them appeal to me, most carry me away to Arabic lands, and provide a great alternate listening experience in my collection of world music.

Mixing Old And New.......2004-02-29

I would not have heard of this lady if the late Aaliyah didn't sample the music in her song Don't Know What To Tell Ya from the album I Care 4 U, but i really likeit. I dont understand a word but still i feel the music, beats and rythm and truly excellent!

clever, clever keyboardist.......2002-11-09

While Warda's voice is pleasing enough, what really grabbed me about the CD is the wildly diverse and clever keyboard playing. The liner notes don't say it, but it sounds to me like most of the exotic instruments heard here....from the Egyptian strings to the kunun to the North African percussion and woodwinds.....were all played by a very talented keyboardist who knows his way around a pitch wheel. Of course, hearing this, one can't help wish that the sounds were actually being made by a room full of Arabic musicians, but I understand that isn't always possible. This keyboardist does as good a job as can be done in emulating a whole host of exotic sounds, with arrangements and playing techniques that demonstrate his deep knowledge of the various musical traditions.

The music on this CD is beautifully orchestrated and is completely capitvating. The quality of the recording is excellent and sounds great even on a portable CD player. With energetic and upbeat tempos, it makes a great music companion for working out, rehearsing and/or performing. This CD is a definite "must have" for any belly dancer.

This cd is really good. It has a nice eastern beat to it. I have to admit that one of her songs sounds a bit weird, but Nar El Gheira is by far the best song on the cd. It is very up=beat and it makes you want to dance all day long.

Roy Orbison goes psychobilly.......2003-04-13

The first LP from the british Pharaohs, mainly recorded in 1985 at "Tin Pan Alley" Studios, London. "Blue Egypt" was originally released on Nervous Records, and now re-released on german Crazy Love with three early bonus tracks.
The album has highlights (cover of "Radar Love", great "Blue Egypt"), and also unsuccessfull tracks, like alt. version of "Tomb Of The Dead". The song is OK, but this interpretation is bad.
Glenn Daeche is a great melodist and composer, rhythm guitar and drums are OK, but double-bass is just a symbol here...
Cover artwork is nice, bonus are cool, so 4!
