Album Description

In 1984, two generations of master folksinger-songwriters - Tom Paxton and Bob Gibson - teamed up with relative newcomer Anne Hills, soon to gain recognition as their peer, to perform for 18 months as Best of Friends. The trio toured the US, UK, and Canada but made no formal recordings, which left Best of Friends a missing and much sought after link in the chain of recorded folk history - until now! A live February 1985 concert taped at Holstein's, then one of Chicago's finest folk clubs, and broadcast on a local radio station, recently resurfaced and is now presented as the only available recording by this three-fold supergroup.

The trio's senior member, Bob Gibson was a unique folk-pop stylist who popularized the 12-string guitar and inspired many of the major country-rock stars of the '60s and '70s, including The Byrds and The Eagles. On "Best of Friends," he contributes three original compositions, including the inspirational "Pilgrim Song," which addresses the 12-step recovery program for substance abusers. Gibson's strengths as an instrumental and vocal arranger are much in evidence, with his trademark 12-string, banjo and voice deftly underpinning Paxton (vocals, acoustic guitar), whose songs dominate the set, and Anne Hills (vocals, acoustic guitar), whose warm soprano provides the rich, lovely bond linking the three singers. The group also performs Anne's song, "While You Sleep."

The CD's material and the intimate mood of the performance are models of original folk music. Paxton, a GRAMMY nominee for 2002's "Looking for the Moon" CD on Appleseed, presents the Tom Lehreresque nightmare "One Million Lawyers," tributes to political martyrs and musical heroes, atmospheric Americana, environmental and sociological concerns, romantic ballads, good-time anthem "Bottle of Wine," and his signature "Ramblin' Boy." Gibson's "Let the Band Play Dixie" calls for social unity, and its quote from Abraham Lincoln could be the motto of this CD: "We are gathered not in anger but in celebration."

5 out of 5 stars Long Overdue.......2005-06-16

I have checked Amazon several times over the last fifteen years hoping for this album to come out on CD. I had heard most, if not all, of the cuts on Dick Cerri's Music Americana when I lived in Washington DC, and I loved what I heard.

Bob Gibson, while perhaps one of the least well-known of the great singers of the folk revival, was my favorite folksinger while I was growing up. It has been said that his voice was "too good" for folk music. He had a wonderful warm baritone, and a great sense of humor. He demonstrated with this group as well as on his glorious recordings with Bob (or has he sometimes called himself- Hamilton) Camp that he could also blend beautifully in harmony.

Tom Paxton, of course, has a great knack for writing clever words and melodies with sly social commentary. He is perhaps the weakest pure singer of the three.

Anne Hills has a beautiful, pure, almost operatic soprano. I have listened to Anne Hills recordings where she sings on her own, and I have generally no liked them. Mostly because she tends to traditional old English folk material that doesn't resonate for me.

Combine the three of them and you have a great trio, reminiscent in some ways of Peter, Paul and Mary but more interesting.

Every song on this album is enjoyable. I particularly liked "Sing for the Song", "And Loving You", and "Let the Band Play Dixie". I liked every song on the album, but my favorites are those where there is significant harmonizing and I haven't heard the song ten thousand times as I have with most Tom Paxton songs.

The quality of sound on the CD is good, no complaints with the transfer. Much of this was recorded live, so the possibility of sound compression was very real, but I am very happy with this CD.

This is one of the greatest folk music CDs ever made. If you like folk music buy it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another good '80s compilation.......2005-04-12

I think that this is just as good an 80s collection album. But this album takes chances. There's more chance at experimentation here with the well performed songs here like Never Surrender by Corey Hart and Danny Wilson's soulful Mary's Prayer. And the Motels' Only the Lonely is one of the more superb 80s ballads. Arcadia's Election Day still sounds sharp from that onetime outside-of-Duran Duran unit. I still like Shattered Dreams, though it fits well here. For all the more commercial hits like the hit Mickey, the more artistic and stylish songs are are also included in this 20-song album. They put it out in 2001, but it was also a smart time to reflect on the 80s with this effort. Creatively and smartly done here.

5 out of 5 stars Great selection of songs. No filler and hard to find gems.......2004-06-22

Music compilations are usually hit or miss (generally miss) as they tend to have 2 or 3 must have songs, and then the rest is pure filler. I initially only bought it because I think that Danny Wilson's "Mary's Prayer" is one of the most beautiful songs that I've ever heard and it's hard to find as it was not one of those monster hits that drive a purchase. For every "Mickey" (which is in almost every compilation from the era) you'll find a "Don't Forget Me When I am Gone" by Glass Tiger, which, like "Mary's Prayer," was not a definitive 80s song, but to be these are even better because they amplify the obvious choices.

In a nutshell, if you are looking for a bunch of 1980s songs, tis release is a no brainer. Of course, I am sure that you have a hard to find song to "Mary's Prayer" that you have not been able to to get your hands on. If you are looking for something pertaining to the 1970s or 1980s, I'll be glad to try and give you guidance as there are some songs out there that we HAVE to have. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Culture club at its best.......2002-05-07

For anyone who enjoys 80's pop, this is a must. No 80's cd collection would be complete without a culture club cd. This is truly their best with no holes. Includes their best songs from "Kissing to be Clever", Colour By Numbers", and "Waking Up With The House on Fire". Also some new material from Boy George. Probably cheaper than their other greatest hits compilation and well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars "CHEAPEST AND BEST G.H. ON MARKET!".......2000-11-17

This album is the best greatest hits album you can buy from Culture Club and Boy George right now, since it is the cheapest, and it includes every hit from 1982 to 1986 from four 1980's Culture Club albums and two great songs from the Boy George "Sold" album. Not only does this album have "The Medal Song" from Culture Club, but right after that, it has "Move Away", the original version. This is the first time the original version of "Move Away" has been available as an import from Disky. Just to hear these two songs, "The Medal Song" and "Move Away" back to back tells you the album is worth more than you paid for it. We also get "Sold" (you can't beat this one!) and "Everything I Own". Please be aware that the only non-original song on this album is "God Thank You Woman". IT IS THE 12' VERSION. But yet, smile. The song "Colour by Numbers" is on this album too, a song never on the four Culture Club albums, but it's magical. Buy this now. It is well worth it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Bargain Price! Good Sound Quality! All the Best Track Selections!.......2005-08-26

What a great band! They had especially during the Midge Ure days a very unique sound and the quality of the songwriting and the music is very good. This compilation has been mastered very well and so the volume levels are at good levels although the sound could possibly be cleaned up just a tad but given the bargain price I paid for this disc, that's just a very small complaint.

If you are looking for a very good selection of the best of Ultravox and at a very good price and sound quality, this is about the best that there is. Great bargain!

4 out of 5 stars All Good.......2005-01-11

All great tracks but I feel I must point out that Slow Motion comes from the Album "Systems of Romance" which came before Vienna and before Midge Ure joined Ultravox. At that time John Foxx was lead singer, and he gets virtually no credit for some reason, and you can tell it's the odd track out. It's still good even if it's a different style.

4 out of 5 stars A good collection.......2000-10-21

Yes, there are many brilliant tracks from all the albums from "Vienna" to "U-Vox". A good choice for a very good price (here in Italy I spent 4 pounds!), and if you like this CD you can also buy their "Vienna" album, maybe their best record, or "Lament". "Visions In Blue" is one of the best tracks of the 80s, and it makes me shiver everytime I listen to it. And Midge Ure is an excellent singer.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Culture Club collection to buy!.......2002-02-07

I choose this CD over the "At worst, the best of" for just one reason : Unlike "At worst," this collection has one of my favorite Culture Club songs, "Mistake #3." It received air time on the radio back in the 80s, and rightfully so since it has a nice melody to it. However, radio stations wouldn't play it on the request line because it wasn't a "hit." Therefore, I ended up buying this CD.

A must have for Culture Club fans!

5 out of 5 stars Long Time CC Fan.......2001-10-20

I've been following CC & BG since 1982 & I am a big fan still. I don't particularly like these cheap type Greatest Hits, however this one cuts right to the chase & gives you most of CC's Hits, which is good for the passing fan. If you're torn get, "At Worst...The Best of BG & CC"

4 out of 5 stars Review from an Italian Fan.......2001-06-03

Great collection of songs, also because it features 'Colour By Numbers' (wrongly indicated on the CD's sleeve as 'Colour My Numbers') that was the B-side of 'Victims. Here there are also two tracks by Boy George, 'Everything I own' and 'Sold'( from his first solo album), three tracks from the often forgotten Culture Club's 'Waking Up With The House On Fire', and the 'God Thank You Woman' track is actually the Extended Version... Over 66 minutes of good music from one of the best band of the 80's. Enjoy it!
