5 out of 5 stars Perhaps THE Seminal Hard Rock Album.......2007-06-24

In terms of MOST IMPORTANT '70's CDS, I'd only place Rainbow Rising and perhaps Black Sabbath's Master of Reality on a par with this album. As far as influencing the neo-classical genre, this album is THE seminal prototype of the genre. Zeppelin was far more folk/blues, and Black Sabbath were concerned more with creating a new genre (you know which).

It's doubtful there would have been Scorpions, UFO, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Dio. or pretty much ANY "hair metal" band from the '80's without this release. I realize the benefits of "hair metal" are disputed (I certainly dispute them), but it was an obviously influential genre (particuarly in terms of guitar playing).

As great as their later release, Machine Head, was and is, this is FAR harder, and keyboardist Jon Lord's influence from the great Classical Composer Gustav Mahler is evident on many of the tracks. Just in terms of overall music composition and scheme, his release never sounds overly removed form the early 2oth century wave of Viennese "Atonal" masterpieces (see Arnold Schoenberg's mid-period, Anton Webern, etc).

Don't miss this, even if you're not "wild" about hard rock. This is an essentia; ROCK album, and it would astonish me to hear too many protests over that assertion.

5 out of 5 stars Calling all Old Rockers!.......2007-05-14

Deep Purple in Rock, gotta be a favorite for any old heavy metal rocker, but you know I think that the younger rocker too may enjoy this, as its hard core rock, not to be listend to lightly, be prepared to hurt your ears, coz this one should be played very loud! enjoy. A+++++

5 out of 5 stars The best ever,forever........2007-05-12

There is no words ,35 year of knowing and loving ,steel is my # 1.

3 out of 5 stars good album.......2007-05-07

This is a good album for those enjoy deep purple. Tracks like speed king, and child in time worth the album.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, with reservations. . ........2007-04-28

Don't get me wrong: I LOVE DEEP PURPLE. They were my first fave hard rock band, and at least eight of their LPs still get my fingers moving and my steering wheel banging! And IN ROCK is one of those. My only beef is that the guys never have given props to the San Fransisco band IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY. That band's first LP was released in 1969, a full year before IN ROCK. Now, given Purple's predilection for Progressive Rock flourishes within a hard rock framework, listen to the song "Bombay Calling" from the first IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY album, and then listen to "Child In Time" from IN ROCK. WAY too close for comfort. I'm not calling it thievery, because musicians listen to other musicians and absorb influences organically. I'd just like to see David LaFlamme in the songwriting credits for CHILD IN TIME. Both songs are great, both bands produced fine work, just give credit where credit is due.

Now, as to this 25th Anniversary edition of IN ROCK: lovely job of remastering, and a great selection of bonus tracks! This is definitely the one to own and treasure. One of Purple's best, and, really, one of my faves.

The Miami-based KC and the Sunshine Band scored again and again in the '70s with their spirited, ultracatchy pop-disco. As this two-disc set makes clear, hits such as "Get Down Tonight," "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," and "Keep It Comin' Love" remain utterly delightful. 25th Anniversary Collection also places emphasis on lesser-known prestardom singles such as "Queen of Clubs" and "I'm a Pushover." Its only real flaw is in a certain too-completeness that leads to the inclusion of three versions of the ballad "Please Don't Go" and a couple of weak Motown covers (KC's own Detroit pastiche, "Who Do Ya Love," is much more successful). Still, it's hard to imagine a more definitive look at these party kings. --Rickey Wright

I have not even opened this because the first two CDs I ordered from Amazon sounded like they were fake!

    5 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2006-07-06

Though I was not a big listener of music during the era of KC & the Sunshine Band, I have heard some of their songs in the last few years and enjoyed them. This collection contains those songs plus lots of other good songs. I keep it in my car and when I want a boost, put on a fun song. And my young grandkids love shaking their "booties" to the music!

4 out of 5 stars Disco's Day In Sunshine Recalled on KC 25th Anniversary Set.......2004-07-19

This 25th anniversary two-disc set of KC & The Sunshine Band's best is bookended by two versions of their signature song, "Get Down Tonight."

Disc one starts with the original 1975 single, one of disco's (and, by extension, the 1970s) most explosive, assertive musical moments. Bandleader/leadsinger Harry "KC" Casey jumps from a sparking guitar solo and pounding drums to ask the world if its ready for a brand newer beat. "Get Down Tonight!" is exhortation as well as invitation, completing in disco the mix of the gospel and blues Ray Charles spent his early career forging. Rock theatrics, JBs groove, Spectorian production and Miami salsa joined then to form disco's hedonistic music and message.

In the extended mix closing Disc 2, legendary DJ Tom Moulton dismantles, reassembles and stretches pieces of the original hit across its incessant bass/drum beat. You hear sparse piano jazz, guitars conversing in Morse code, horns leading a charge then pulling back in rhythm. Moulton rethinks a classic pop single, providing a composing lesson to dance to.

In between those versions Rhino tells KC & The Sunshine Band's story through its remarkable string of 1975-78 hits: propulsive grooves like "I'm Your Boogie Man," "Keep It Coming Love," and the "That's The Way (I Like It)" turn horn riffs and female chants into sexy, trashy, and gritty songs in disco's heydey. Even their lone ballad hit, "Please Don't Go" (the first #1 of the 80s) packs big band production punch and a near carnival riff repeated throughout the song.

In the margins you hear the Sunshine Band's showcase sharp Kool & The Gang-style disco-funk ("Shotgun Shuffle," and their version of George McCrae's hit, "Rock Your Baby.") You also hear should-have-been-hits like "Who Do You Love?" and 1978's surprisingly strong take on the Four Tops' "It's The Same Old Song." You also hear occasional missteps like 1982's "Let's Go Rock and Roll," and a flaccid, "Dancing In The Street" before KC rebounded with 1984's comeback, "Give It Up."

This group was entirely about its singles, so this collection is slightly less essential than either taut collections like 1990's best-of or KC's entry in Warner's "Essentials" series. But disco and general 70s music fans will find this 2 CD-set expands and celebrates an underrated group and phenomenon.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but a Little Disappointing.......2006-03-16

I liked this 2 CD set, but I think I overpaid. There are many cute older type tunes on the discs as well as some newer ones. I would say I liked about one in four songs. Do not buy this item just for one song!

    5 out of 5 stars SCHLOCK & ROLL!.......2005-10-26

The King of Kitsch, Kraziness and all things Kooky deftly rounds up an asylum-full of novelty nincompoops, just as on his long running weekly syndicated radio show. If you like this sort of thing (and who, short of the deceased, doesn't?), the spoils are almost embarrassingly endless here. Weird Al Yankovic (a Dr. Demento apprentice) jump-starts the fun with one of his best song titles (and parodies) ever, SMELLS LIKE NIRVANA. Then there's that timeless tribute to everyone's fave knucklehead, THE CURLY SHUFFLE...Trekkie wet dream HIGHLY ILLOGICAL from Leonard ("I am not...ahhh, the HELL with it! I really AM spock!") Nimoy, not to mention Bobby "Boris" Pickett's spot-on satire STAR DREK...TIMOTHY, The Buoys' macabre ode to cannibalism (penned by Rupert PINA COLADA SONG Holmes)...Brownsvile Station's twisted blues-clashes-with-sci-fi feast MARTIAN BOOGIE...Da Yoopers' hilarious stinker SECOND WEEK OF DEER CAMP...Meri Wilson's double entendre delight PETER THE METER READER...The Chips' original gobbledygook version of the Blues Brothers-associated RUBBER BISCUIT...even the rare as a porkpie hat SONG OF THE SEWER, courtesy one Art "Ed Norton" Carney, fer cryin' (laughin'?) out loud!!! Sicko oldtimers Tiny Tim, Spike Jones and Demento regular Benny Bell also share space with artists as diverse as folkie Christine Lavin and gross-out rockers Green Jelly, keeping the fun/pain threshold at an excrutiatingly high level. LISTEN WITH CAUTION!!! RATING: FIVE BELLY-LAUGHS

    5 out of 5 stars Laughing .......2005-07-19

The Doctor is back after 25 years of comedy records. He still is making us laugh as we go through life.

    5 out of 5 stars It's good, though!.......2005-02-04

This is the second of the Dr. Demento "Anniversary" compilations. There are less of the most famous novelty hits this time around, because most of them appeared on the first compilation. But there is no drop in quality, because even the lesser known tracks here are great. If you are a fan of mad music and crazy comedy, you should get this.

4 out of 5 stars Good memories, but not kid-safe..........2003-06-04

Most of this stuff is pretty funny if you're 40, but some of it is not good for kids. I had forgotten what some of these lyrics were like and I bought this for my 10-year-old for his birthday. He is loving it while I am reminding him that he is NOT ALLOWED to sing along with some of the songs and he is certainly not allowed to play it for his Nanny (my mom-in-law). I am not referring to cute little ditties like Shaving Cream either (this is actually the cute little ditty reason I purchased this CD - I mention this so you'll know I'm not a prude). I am referring to a little sexual inuendo here and there and a few bad words that are actually present and not covered up by Shhhhh-aving Cream. Enjoy this if you are an adult who loves humor - I did - but don't buy it for your kids - MY BAD!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

4 out of 5 stars The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
    Very good value.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars The 12" single versions of these classics should have been used here........2007-02-24

I thoroughly agree with the others who have complained about the compilation's producers' choosing to include the 7"single versions of these classic 1980s dance tracks here--had they used the original 12" versions and put out a 2-CD set this would surely have been a much better collection. Nonetheless, these tracks are all club anthems of the '80s and it's good to have them all on one CD--and with good sound quality. During the 1980s, L.A.'s Circus Disco nightclub was the West Coast's equivalent of NYC's Studio 54--and it still exists today.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2007-01-23

This CD is Great! It has all the songs I listened to in High School. I love it!!! It's a great work out CD.

5 out of 5 stars Man how time flies when you are having fun!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-02

Back in the late 80's (1988) to early 90's, my sister Sandra, Lisa, Michelle and the rest of the Ladies of Tri-Starr of Whitter Calif. used to go to back yard parties on the weekends (and ditching parties)dance and get drunk to this music then cruise Whittier Blvd; and now 17 years later I sit here at my computer listening to this cd reminiscing about the past and wondering where all you disco biscuits are now...Now my husband and kids have to listen to it...

    1 out of 5 stars Poor Substitute........2005-05-09

This CD is a disapointment. None of the songs are the !2" versions that were played in the clubs. These shortened versions are poor subtitutes that barely get you going before they end. These three to four minute versions are pointless. As well, if you want to reproduce the club experience wouldn't you mix these songs together in one long run as would have been done at any disco worth its salt?

Forget this. Go and get Larry Levan Live at the Paradise Garage or West end Records 25th Anniversary Master Mix. That is unless you want a poor K-Tel Substitute.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent music cut short.......2004-03-25

The song selection is excellent! Every song is meant to be played in a party!I got it when I was 17, and now I'm 21, but I love it. My sister owned the original single records which are now too scratched to be played, so i was very happy to see all these songs on one cd. The downside is that the songs are cut from 5 seconds to 3 minutes. In order to fit all these songs, this was done, which makes it sound cheap. For example, Two Man Sound's "Capital tropical" is cut to 5 minutes from the original version which is around 8 minutes long. The cd liner notes are unnecessary, as I don't know what Circus Disco was and there are many spelling mistakes. All in all, a good release by Thump Records. (Try to get the 12" vinyl record)

    5 out of 5 stars Life Changing..........2007-06-27

My father gave me some tapes when I was a little boy. One was a mix of the Beatles, & the other was a copy of Hope ( I listened to them over and over); and it was at the time when MTV started. Soon I was carried away by the flash of my fluttering TV. The Beatles came back into my life again as time passed, but I couldn't remember the name of this album, I had been searching for. I remembered a story album & asked every musician I knew. I did hear the name a couple of times, but couldn't spell it. Finally I found it on my computer. The first time I listened to it, it brought a tear to my eye, and now after all these years understanding it blew me away. The most beautiful story album ever made!

5 out of 5 stars Great Thematic Rock Opera.......2007-04-17

Okay, it's not *actually* an opera, but this classic alternative rock album from the late '70s is a single story told through some exceptional orchestrated rock. I owned a vinyl LP copy back in the day, wore out a cassette copy, and recently rediscovered the CD.

The story of "Hope" is an analogy to the human experience on earth told through a series of songs about those no-long-existing beings on the planet "second from the sun." One can enjoy the music at several levels; as stand-alone classic alternative rock, excellently produced (a la Alan Parsons Project before they were around), or one can dig deeper and get into the message and clever writing within the thematic message of "Hope."

My favorites include the Politzanian national anthem embedded in "Politzania," "The Loneliest of Creatures," a wonderful space-choral piece, "Around the Universe in 80 Days..." Pretty much the whole thing. I rarely listen to bits of this album and tend to prefer it on long drives when I can enjoy the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated classic with a lasting message.......2006-03-31

I remember when this came out; I was in college at the time. I had no awareness of this group then (I was absorbed in acid rock and the Grateful Dead - hey, it was college!) but an acquaintance turned me on to this and I have loved it since.

This record (now CD) is an unsung prog-rock classic that's long been overshadowed by its more popular musical brethren. I do hear influences from SuperTramp, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Pink Floyd. However, this is also a coherent, musically multi-layered concept album that packs an emotional punch and transcends its influences.

The general idea is that a space-traveling race journeys to a solar system, and encounters the wreckage of the planet Klaatu, a metaphorical stand-in for Earth. The only remnants are a laser-beam lighthouse adrift in the asteroid belt, manned by a single person. The disc is a musical account of the destructive fall of Klaatu's once-great civilization Politzania, and the space travelers' encounter with the dying lighthouse keeper.

The message resonates if you give it a chance. It also has stunning relevance today. If you don't see the similarities between Klaatu's fictional Politzania and Bush's America, then I have to assume you're A) a Republican; B) a musical snob. The tunes "So Said the Lighthouse Keeper" and "Hope" are probably among the most moving pieces of music ever to come out of the prog-rock milieu.

This disc will always have a place in my CD collection. I am so glad it's back in print. If you're interested enough to have read this review, you owe it to yourself to get this.

    5 out of 5 stars It's the message.......2004-02-12

This is all about the message. The madman, The lighthouse keeper. I know it all sounds strange and all that, but listen to the words. It may just give you hope!

2 out of 5 stars Very, very cute........2003-09-02

If you like cute. It's okay, but you have to waid through
a lot of syrupy, cloying, well, Canadianess. This stuff
would be great on Sesame Street.

4 out of 5 stars Old School Gospel - Love it!.......2007-03-14

It's been a while since I got this one, but what I liked about this was that it was a holy spirit filled recording and it reminded me of my childhood when my Mom used to play what was contemporary Gospel then around the house. She sang along when I played this the 1st time. You gotta love the Hawkins family! Very good music and so anointed! You will hear some of the songs you are familiar with.

    5 out of 5 stars POWERFUL!!!.......2007-01-16

Okay, I bought this only to listen to the 2nd CD. The fresh arrangements on these classics blessed my life as though I was listening to them for the very first time. If you love gospel music, this MUST be in your library!!

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-04-08

My first introduction to gospel was at the tender age of 4 and it was to the Hawkins Family. I have since then loved their music and support them all the time. This CD was great! Marvelous and Cry on did it for me. If you are new to the Hawkins I would say try Love Alive 1 first then work your way down the line.

god's Glory...when he belts out a song like "MARVELOUS" it sends chills thru-out my body and I can't help but give GOD the praise, honor & glory for such a magnificent performance!!! I have followed the Hawkins Family all of my life and their music is like something from heaven that's been enhanced by the spirit of the Lord!!
They are(with-out-a-doubt)my favorite, outside of the "Clarks" &
Donnie McClurkin...GOD BLESS & KEEP THEM ALWAYS!
