This U.K. three-piece's self-titled debut often got compared to Smashing Pumpkins and Rush--Smashing Pumpkins for its unashamed mid-'70s prog-rock allusions and Rush because of singer Brian Molko's unusually high-pitched, almost androgynous voice. In reality, Placebo were far more salacious, downright dirty, and culturally confusing than either. (The band is a mix of American, Swedish, and English, with some Lebanese and Luxembourgian thrown in.) For their second album, Placebo have looked to the late '70s for inspiration, to the sound of early New Order and the Banshees--with a dash of the '90s thrown in: "Brick Shithouse," for example, starts like the most balls-out Prodigy song. If their debut was the sound of a no-holds-barred sexual drug frenzy lasting way into the next day, then Without You I'm Nothing is the resultant rumpled, libidinous comedown. As such, it's much classier, cerebral and great to listen to when hung-over. "I'm unclean / A libertine / And every time you vent your spleen / I seem to lose my power of speech," Molko breathes on the awesomely overcharged title track. In a year when Marilyn Manson and Bauhaus continue to revitalize the goth movement across America, Placebo's moment may well have arrived. --Everett True
Customer Reviews:
I love this CD.......2007-05-25
I think I just love Placebo. You have to love his voice to buy any of there cd's. Anyone who likes Placebo's "controversial" lyrics, should look up some of their interviews. Very interesting people.
BEST PLACEBO ALBUM SO FAR!!!.......2007-01-12
This is my favorite Placebo album to date. I have all of their albums, including Meds, but I am still pulled toward this one. Probably because it's more melancholy and still not too poppy.
A forgotten masterpiece?.......2006-06-12
I was surprised that when this album came out it was given roughly 6 out of 10 in most reviews. On 'Without You I'm Nothing' Molko manages to sustain a mood of decadent melancholy throughout. He is often derided as an androgynous pretender who is acting out rock 'n' roll cliches, but on this album he genuinely came across to me as a man who is irresistably drawn to pushing the boundaries of experience. When an obsessive fan leaves death threats on his answerphone he seems to embrace this darkness by interspersing snippets from the message on the secret track. He doesn't just revel in debauchery he accounts its brutal consequences and their myriad intricacies in evocative detail, and here more than at any other point in his career. Although I've heard the criticism that he seems to wallow in the sound of words and not their content I think this is all part of a holistic transission of experience to the listener. I think this Placebo's masterpiece, a sordid trawl through the underbelly not just of rock 'n' roll but of modern relationships. He perfectly articuates the uncertainty of a decaying relationship, of the bond betwen two people that surpasses experience, of the clammy hold one person can have over another, of the thrilling divide between a decadent relatonship and the consequent loneliness that comes with its fulfillment in a way I've not heard before or since. I've focused upon the lyrical content but the band's performance also manages to teeter between glorious abandon and tasteful restraint in a way that supplies the perfect backdrop. The artwork is haunting, the production is immaculate and the recrod managed to be commercial enough to spawn three hits. Theres more to this band than misunderstood teenagers and misplaced angst. Honest!
Without this Album, You're Nothing.......2006-05-06
I should have written this a long time ago. I saw Placebo in London in 2001 and was immediately hooked. They were so much different than the American bands that I was listening to at the time (Tool, Rage, etc.). The band produced seering pop rock that just flowed through the throng of sweaty people at the show. So after that, I went out and bought the album. Pure Morning may be one of the catchiest songs ever written. Once you hear it, it sticks in your brain for days and is nearly impossible to dislodge. Not to be overshadowed are great tracks like Every Me, Every You and You Don't Care about us. These songs crackle with electricity and are great to listen to anytime, but for me, especially when driving. But the highlight to the album has got to be the title track. Very emotional and strong. I recomend this album to anyone who's gotten stuck in a rut with today's mainstream music.
Okay, I'm POSSESSED. It's the only thing I want to listen to........2005-12-27
I am huge Brit Pop whore and have been since I was thirteen. That being said, Placebo really doesn't have much in common with the 90s Brit Pop greats like Pulp, The Stone Roses, Blur or Suede which all have a sort of vague interlocking thread. I'm not even sure why I like "I'm Nothing Without You" so much: it's not my kind of music. I remember when "Pure Morning" was a single, and I didn't think anything of it at the time. All I know now is that I can't wait to get home from work so I can listen to this album. One moment it has me jumping up and down like lunatic, and next I'm pratically weeping. And I LOVE Brian Molko's voice.
So I'd thank all the Amazon Placebo reviewers who convinced me I should give this album a go. You all were right.
And for the record, Placebo does not sound like Smashing Pumpkins (the kind of music I do hate). Buy buy buy.

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21
Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.
Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16
A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.
Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14
City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:
3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)
Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25
1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:
Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny
Great cast ... great buy!
I love it!.......2005-02-22
This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Time Capsule.......2006-11-30
The voices and instruments, like the songs, are straight from the mid-19th century. If you want to be transported back in time 150 years to a wonderful parlor performance of Foster's songs, this is the album to do it. The voices are marvelous and trained, and one must imagine that the strict phrasing and style are what one would have expected at the time. The cheap upright piano is perfect.
But the one perfect moment for me is the ONLY good extant rendition of "Was My Brother in the Battle?". Accompanied on a harmonium or pump reed organ, if this song doesn't tempt a tear, you simply aren't a romantic.
Very highly recommended.
Unexpected.......2005-11-26
Quality of this recording is fantastic! Performances are superb! However, they don't fit being an example of Foster's music and times. I was expecting banjos and a Mississippi Sound - therfore, very, very disappointed in this CD and consider and a waste of money. Be sure to LISTEN to a few examples to match what you are looking for and what the CD offers. I, unfortunately did not listen before I bought. I rate this low only because my expectations were shattered. This IS a fine CD if opera styles are ok for an example of this southern, 1800's composer's work.
An album to treasure.......2004-09-23
The landmark Library of Congress album, now on enhanced CD. Years
ago, I went on a six-months field assignment to a remote area of
Africa, where I could take only what music I could carry in a vest
pocket. I chose a tape player and two albums: a recital by Perlman
and this album on tape, and was content. If you love American
music, sung poetry, beautiful singing and deeply moving musicality,
this is an album you will treasure for a lifetime.
A classic recording of American songs.......2004-08-22
What can I say that hasn't already been said below? I only wanted to reiterate how wonderful this album is and assure the reader the sound is spectacular on CD. This is a live recording, and intentionally so, as the idea was to create a "parlor" experience as these were parlor songs to be sung by family and friends around the old upright piano. I especially liked the comment about the upright piano which, indeed, does croak and clank throughout the performance adding a note of "authenticity" without becoming obtrusive.
If only Ms. DeGaetani had graced my parlor...
The sessions of sweet silent thought stirred.......2003-11-22
I have never heard such unadulterated extraworldy sound emanate from two human voices and what would otherwise be firewood (the period instruments played by Gilbert Kalish). It stirs profound patriotism and a deep sentimentality for our early days when a civilized people pined to find virtue by examining its own body-- the north and the south, the small town, the simple flag, and the beauty of gentile manly and womanly love expressed through equisite song. There is no other music I would rather hear 'when summoning up the remembrance of things past.' The ghost of the early American parlor will prick your skin through these simple hymns and you may escape for a moment our troubled and busy times.

Best Comedy Recording Ever.......2004-06-18
Let me start by saying that I am not a die-hard Sandra Bernhard fan. Not all of her comedy shows have been great, and we know her acting limitations (remember Hudson Hawk).
That said, this recording of her broadway (or off-off-Broadway) show is truly inspired madness, and much better than the film version that was adpated from this work.
Part comedy, part musical, I can promise that this recording is laugh-out-loud hilarious, even after hearing it multiple times. I think my favorite routine is the one regarding Sandra's supposed love affair with Stevie Nicks.
This is truly a keeper. Get ready to pay big money for it, as it is in high demand and is out of print.

Historical Time Capsule.......2000-08-12
This is the most comprehensive recording I've found of songs popular during the Civil War period. The performances are a time capsule of Civil War music.

Great combination.......2002-07-10
Brina Molko's voice together with David Bowie is a great combination for all the Placebo fans as well as Bowie's.
I like the live images that this CD comes with. You can see the Mystique and the Dark-but-sweet performance of David Bowie really enhanced the grab-your-attention attitude that Placebo has in their live performnces.
This CD is a must for people who love to see Placebo live and even nice to have if you've never seen them live since the live images on the CD will thrill you with delite.
Surprisingly good remixes..........1999-12-11
Generally speaking, remixed versions of rock songs are a painful experience (just check out Pulp's This is Hardcroe remixes). So it was with some trepidation that I approached this single. However, I love the orginal song, one of the remixers was UNKLE, and having David Bowie's name on it didn't hurt either...so I gave it a try. Well, as it turns out, Bowie doesn't add much to the original song, except to add some polar-opposite backing vocals to Brina Molko's nasal lead. The UNKLE remix is quite good, as is the next one. Hell, even the 12-minute plus club mix is better than a lot of dance tracks out there. The fact that I can listen to this single - over 25 minutes of different versions of the same song - in one sitting without getting sick of it is a testament to the quality of the remixers (not ot mention the original song). As a bonus, there's some CD-rom stuff on here as well, with pictures of Placebo and Bowie performing together.

CLASSIC PERFORMANCE.......2005-12-02
If you've got a taste for Sandra, it never got any better than this. To have seen it live back in the 80s in New York City was a lucky break for me but this recording is an amazing record of that event.
Through the years Sandra has been frustrating, arrogant, angry, dismissive, contradictory and even tiresome. I'm sure she would be happy to accept all of that but then again, who cares about her offstage? One should appreciate the work and there is so much to enjoy here.
This is theater, this is performance, this is perfection.
Truly a comic masterpiece.

Customer Reviews:
David Bowie's voice in the best song of Placebo.......2000-10-14
Without you I'm nothing is the best song of Placebo. The single includes 4 versions of the song. From the first track (sinlge mix),which I think is the best, you can listen to that strange and gifted being called David Bowie. And I think that it is not accidental the fact that David Bowie participates in that emotional song. His voice gives to the song another dimension ,it becomes seductive and heartbreaking. The second track (unkle remix) gives more beat and rhythm. The third track (the flexirol mix) I can't say that I liked it althoug it is a little bit of a trip-hop version (which is one of my favorite styles). The fourth track (brothers in rhythm club mix) is a dynamite,a club version that you can't listen to it without dancing. If anyone of you has felt the emotion "without you I'm nothing" definitily must buy this single and you'll find out what I mean.
without you i'm nothing.......2000-10-13
could a song be better in any other ways.this is their best song from the album same name without you i'm nothing but there is something about this single and it is David Bowie.Brilliant.I'd buy it even with one song that they do duet.First and last remixes are also very delicate.a very must to buy.
