Although Robert Preston and Barbara Cook put in stellar performances, it's the music that's the star of this hugely successful document of the 1958 Broadway smash. Written entirely by Meredith Willson, it drew from memories of his childhood in a small Midwestern town. Preston plays a traveling salesman/con artist, while Cook is the dull spinster "Marian the Librarian," whose love for Preston's character makes her come alive. "Seventy-Six Trombones" has become a marching band standard, while "Ya Got Trouble" (featuring dizzying fast-talk from Preston) and "'Til There Was You" (with a gorgeous vocal from Cook) remain well known even among those who have never seen the show. The latter was also a favorite of the Beatles, who covered it on their first album. --Dawn Eden
Customer Reviews:
Music Man.......2007-02-09
The original cast recording brings back the memory of the live production I saw which will always be superior, in my opinion, to the movie version. However, the movie was one of the better "reproductions" of this genre.
One of This Country's Finest Musicals Beautifully Re-Mastered.......2006-11-23
THE MUSIC MAN opened on Broadway on December 19, 1957 to rave reviews from the critics, adulations from the captivated audiences, and the beginning of a long run. This wondrous musical is an 'opera' of sorts in that the piece is not a series of songs connected by the usual musical comedy spoken dialogue. Meredith Willson wrote the music and lyrics in such a way that there is not an extraneous note or word that doesn't contribute to the totality of the work.
Despite the multiple reincarnations of this brilliant show both on film and recording, none of them compares to this original cast. Imagine Barbara Cook (lithe, and new) as Marian the Librarian: Cook still reigns as one of our finest voices on the stage and cabaret rooms today. Robert Preston is not only rich in personality he also delivers the immensely complex patter songs with deft authority. And the Buffalo Bills add the multiple barbershop quartet numbers with authentic sound and professionalism.
This musical holds all of the joys and imaginations and longings that we all hold so dear in our memories of how things used to be - and it is so terrific to return to that stage of ecstasy again. This is a must own CD. Grady Harp, November 06
We need a new remaster, nonetheless.......2006-10-22
A very interesting photo on the liner booklet's back cover demonstrates the one real flaw in this otherwise classic recording: it shows Robert Preston at the album sessions singing at two mikes, a fat Neumann with a Capitol flag and a skinny one, probably an AKG. This can only mean Capitol recorded this in simultaneous mono and stereo takes. With all that knob twiddling the balance had to go off, a problem not entirely corrected by the reissue engineer Bob Norberg, whose remasterings of Ol' Blue's Capitol mono output have earned scorn from some Sinatraphiles for their slight fake echo and stereo effects. (He remastered just about every album in the Broadway Angel series; the monos all appear to have the echo and stereo.) I guess we should be happy to have this in any form at all given how the other majors turned it down. Capitol was late and indifferent to the cast album trade, and it only had three hits before making its monumental closing botch of "Follies." However the label approached it it's still a great and exciting score perfectly performed. Who could have imagined a hit musical with a barbershop quartet? And if only all women could sing like Barbara Cook! Who says you can have too much of a good thing?
With the show's fiftieth anniversary coming up (!) now would be a good time for a remaster. (I know, I know, I'm tired of paying repeatedly for the same product too, but this deserves it.) It should include a second disc with the 1959 Capitol documentary LP "And Then I Wrote 'The Music Man'", where Meredith Willson and his wife Rini detail the eight years of trials and rewrites behind the show. Nor would it hurt to have bonuses like Willson's original take on "Till There Was You" (called "Till I Met You," which Fran Warren evidently first sang on "The Big Show") or a few licensed pop balladeers of the day -- and maybe examples like the 70s jingle for the late lamented Oldsmobile ("Oh ho the new Oldsmobile is a -- comin' down the line...."). It must also include Willson's contentious JFK physical fitness tune "Chicken Fat", recorded about the time "The Music Man" was filmed and available only on oddball Web music sites, where Preston yells and grunts himself into an athletic -- passion. (I keep thinking Allan Sherman recorded a full version of his notorious parody "76 Sol Cohens", but I guess he didn't.) The whole thing should end with a live public-radio performance from 1980 or 1981 where Willson led the superb Detroit Concert Band in "76 Trombones" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" -- an apt and brilliant finish.
No, I have not forgotten the Beatles, but I fear neither have their lawyers.
Accept no substitutes!.......2006-08-22
This the best version of "The Music Man" available, especially if you're looking for the Broadway cast. The performances here are all terrific, the recording and mastering are great, and the liner notes are informative and thorough. "The Music Man" is available in several other versions and forms, including other releases of the same original cast recording, but without the good mastering or liner notes found here. My wife and I, hoping to listen to this great show with our kids, first purchased other versions that were easier to find (e.g., on iTunes) and those were major disappointments. Buy this CD (Broadway Classics from Angel) and accept no substitutes.
Preston and Cook are the best ever.......2006-07-15
Yes, the film is a delight, and Shirley Jones is certainly good as Marian. But the original cast album of this wonderful musical remains the best version ever, mostly thanks to Barbara Cook, whose voice was and remains a miracle of rare device to listen to.
For years I thought I was the only person who was in love with her voice, wearing out vinyl LPs of this musical with replaying. Then, in the early 80s I saw Cook in a one woman show in London, and discovered I was part of a fanatical following! The other reviews here on Amazon confirm the truth: there is only one truly great Marian, Madam Librarian.
Watch the movie, which is a terrific adaptation of the stage show, go to professional and amateur revivals of the musical, but buy this recording of the score for repeated listening. There is nothing better.

WOW this albulm is amazing a great step foward and is equally just as good as their first peace in a time of war even though it is differeft. if u like roots reggae at all SOJA is where its at!! i have had this albulm since it came out in early fall and still amazed at how good it is.. Every reggae lover GET WISER and cop this!!
Nice.......2006-03-14
Roots fans need to cop this. Easily the equal to "Peace In A Time Of War," which I thought was a classic. "Get Wiser" shows a more musically mature and diversified SOJA, but they wisely (pun intended) stuck with what they do best -- crafting profound, top-quality, jammin' roots reggae. Plus, any reggae album with local DC legend Go-Go Mickey bangin away has got to be a classic.
Along with Groundation (please check out any and all of their albums), SOJA is pretty much the top of the food chain when it comes to real old-school roots reggae these days. Never thought I'd see the day when the best new roots bands would be coming from the U.S., rather than Jamaica or the UK. But SOJA, Groundation, Midnite, John Browns Body, (the related) 10-Foot Ganja Plant and even Matisyahu -- all either from the US or US based -- are definitely representing. Of course, some of the old guard from JA and UK (Burning Spear, Steel Pulse, etc.) are still holding it down, but the best of the new blood is here.
Anyway, I digress, buy the album.
It's Soja! Soja is ALWAYS amazing........2006-03-03
I got this cd after seeing them in Richmond and it's my absolute favorite now. It's Soja, so of course it's good, but this cd is definitely the best by far. It's music so good you just wanna close your eyes and enjoy it.

I heard this and it made me want to kill people........2006-07-28
It's not too often that a band comes along that makes me want to kill myself and/or other people....these guys suck. It's a good example of how music should not be done. The lyrics are a total laugh. I mean you have to be retarded to make music like this and think it's actually good. It's unoriginal, bland, sad, unquestionably homoerotic and should not be sold to anyone. The sad thing is that these idiots make other bands of this style look bad. It's just garbage. I'll make a prediction..."their record label drops them, they sign with an indie label and put out an album even worse than this one, that label drops them, then they go back to there orginal jobs at the pet store"..........Give it up sevenwiser...you're a disease to music.
I want to hear more! When does the next Cd come out?.......2006-04-21
This artist caught my eye on the Punisher Soundtrack with the single "Sick." The song was very impressive and left me wanting to hear more. When this album came out I could not find it anywhere. However, once I did, I was not dissappointed. The track "Take Me as I Am" is a great song. I believe the radio needed to give it more airtime. Another favorite was "Talk to Me." It is short but very strong and very hard to get out of your head. Overall the album was very impressive for a breakout band and I can't wait to hear more. There newest song "Emtpy" is very catchy. Watch for this band in the future, they've got some serious talent. Whoever is comparing these guys to Creed really need their heads checked because THEY SOUND NOTHING LIKE THEM! They have their own sound and the lead singer has more talent than Scott Stapp.
Great Debut.......2006-03-16
for some reason a lot of people are comparing these guys to Creed. WHY?... these people must not have listened to human clay very well. in no way shape or form do these guys sound anything like Creed. and "Take Me As I Am" has no sound remotely close to "My Sacrafice". If anything it sounds like "Shine" by Collective Soul, at least the intro does. This cd is a solid debut from a band thriving to make a name for themselves. Although recent cut from wind-up records... they are still making musiq and working on a second album that i can't wait for. great cd from start to finish.
nothing we haven't heard before, but genuinely good........2005-07-16
I bought this cd for one reason and that was the song, "take me as i am." I listened to more of it and realized that they sound just like their label mates, but it's ok becasue wind-up puts out this rock style. I was pretty surprised by how good the rest of the cd is. Submersed is another band like Seven WIser and is worth the pick up.
They do sound a bit like Creed, but..........2005-07-01
But that's because these guys are simple numetal. And yes you're right, one band is good and one is not. Creed is good. These guys have a run of the mill heard it a million times sound. Lyrics could not be more predictable. Creed, even though have a numetal sound of sorts, also had originality. That's one reason why they are so tremendously popular and are used as a comparison often by those who get a fix off dissing on success. Much of Creeds lyrics are varied with thought and depth. They came together as musicians and did it right. Further proof of this is since their break up they just can't hit the same level. I can't stand generic numetal, it's so simple minded and boring that it's painful, but Creed was not generic. Creed is a permanent band in many folks collection, including mine, but no one will know who Seven Wiser was in a year or two. Make your numetal money while you can boys.

Customer Reviews:
Really good album.......2006-03-02
I really have grown to like this album very much. Actually I will give it 4.5 stars. All the songs are really good and the moods are just beautiful. I would say this music is in the same style as Frau Frau, Hooverphonic, Spicehouse and Esthero, all my favorites. I am glad I went with the advice of the other reviwers, I am looking forward to getting more of their music. All in all this CD has many interesting moments - perfect for relaxing or just about anything.
Ouch !!!.......2005-09-23
After numerous listening tried to find something to like about this CD but couldn't. Not the worse disk I had ever purchased, just a very uninteresting one.
I must be the odd one.......2005-09-20
All reviewers so far have given full five stars to'Wiser'. I agree to most parts of the reviews. Wiser is full of great music: GREAT melodies, great orchestration, etc. There is only one problem: Rebecca's singing - it is OFF KEY in the soft passages of 'Oceanwide', 'I would love to give up', 'We only love you'- the most melodic songs in the album. What a pity!
Having said that, check Airlock's Symptomatic (in my mind the best soft trip hop yet delivered !!!!) and Goldfrapp's Felt Mountain for perfect performance (five stars in my scale).
Where have I been ?.......2005-07-16
I purchased this album on the strength of the reviews. And everyone is absolutley right ! This album is abosolutley gorgeous ! The beats are digitalized and very electronic and the vocals are extremley dreamy ! I love Mandalay, and I have to say this band is on a very similar wave length ! "Oceanwide" is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard ! Really there isn't a need to continue on the other reviewer's are on point. This is a very cohesive effort which brings a dream like quality & theme to it. Really it is in it's on league this band really doesn't sound like anyone else in Trip Hop. The closest would be Mandalay but yet in still there is a difference ! I wonder if this band are still in existance this was 4 years ago !
Love this album man !
I agree with all of you...........2005-03-21
Let me first say that I agree with all of you...this is a great album! Everything about it submerges you in a complete surreal audio experience. However, some people seem to think this is their first and only album out, which isn't true. They had a couple albums before this one, and if you can believe it, they are actually even better. Track them down if you can...they are called "We Only Love You" (the best one by far) and "Sans Soucie". They were on a small label, so they may be hard to find, but if you liked this album, it's worth the hunt.

Nostalgia can not overcome lackluster performance.......2007-03-26
If you're a Notre Dame alum, fan, or just from the midwest U.S., you may find some nostalgia in this recording of the Notre Dame Glee Club under the direction of Daniel Stowe. Unfortunately, the performances are under-energized, lackluster, and uninspiring. In addition, the performances are beleagured with serious intonation problems throughout.
Despite a few interesting arrangements and patriotic salutes to Notre Dame, the CD is boring and rather lifeless. Look further if you're wanting a rousing men's choir recording.

Perhaps the most under-appreciated albums in the genre.......2001-08-27
The Clancy's, here, have given us a work that pushes beyond the pub song/ballad/folksiness that defines much of their work. Very similar to the works of Bob Dylan on Time out of Mind, or Warren Zevon on Life Will Kill Ya, this record contemplates the anguish of aging without sacrificing that certain Clancy brothers charm. I would recomend this album based solely on what I consider to be the most haunting and meaningful rendition of The Final Trawl ever recorded. A star must be striken from the rating only because the rendition of When the Ship Comes In was very sub par to the live performance they gave on the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert album. That album, to, may be worth buying on the strength of the single track (though, don't get me wrong, I think it's an excellent album for all of them).
Can't match the old stuff, but still satisfying.......1999-11-03
By the time this was recorded, Tommy Makem was long since history as a member of this seminal Irish folk group. Robbie O'Connell was a talented replacement, but of course, the Clancy boys were all feeling their years, and so there simply isn't the energy and passion that even the brilliant 1984 Reunion live album had. Still, it's a nice quality recording and the singing is first-rate.

Product Description
Make Me Wiser, the debut album from Southern rock phenom Daybreakdown, is steeped in that 70s-era dirty guitar-driven style that has been so elusive since the introductions of disco, hair metal, grunge and boy-band pop. Despite serious Southern influences born in the Delta and the hill country of North Mississippi, Daybreakdown has a sound that transcends regional or contemporary comparisons, and Make Me Wiser captures that sound and spirit in its entirety. The self-produced album was recorded at TRS Studio, just outside of Jackson, Mississippi, in the spring and summer of 2004. During those intense, emotional sessions, bassist The Kid John Phillips opted to leave the band to finish college and all recording came to a temporary hault. Just three weeks into the bands search for Phillips replacement, studio engineer Big John Patrick was handed the reigns. After familiarizing himself with the bands originals, Patrick helped the band lay down the final tracks for the album. Taking Patrick out of the studio and on the road meant more delays with the mixing and production of Make Me Wiser. But with a new-found energy, and just a little patience, the band eventually left the studio with the finished product they had been hoping for. Make Me Wiser is a rock album in its truest sense. The honest, blue-collar lyrics of the bands three songwriters Eric Carlton (keyboards, organ), Patrick McClary (lead guitar, vocals), and Reid Stone (rhythm guitar, vocals) cut through the superficial, whiney rock star clichés that are so prevelant in todays music, and the thunderous beats from Daybreakdowns rhythm section (John Patrick and drummer Tyler Rayburn) will keep heads bobbing and toes tapping. Fans of classic rock icons the Allman Brothers, The Band and Little Feat, as well as current rock pioneers Govt Mule and the Black Crowes should all find Make Me Wiser a mainstay in home and car stereos from the Carolinas to California, and all points in-between.
