Product Description
HAGEN is a modern Scandinavian line-up that could attract and reconcile fans of folklore and symphonic heavy-metal. To do so, the musicians could invent their own sound, in a very original Progressive heavy-metal context. The keyboard parts are great and omnipresent, no doubt because of the surprising parts by Hans LUNDIN, Roine STOLT’s legendary companion within KAIPA. Another positive thing is that the singer’s bluesy and rough voice is totally in harmony with the use of an always perfect English. Logical conclusion: "Corridors Of Time" (1999) shouldn’t be missed !

5 out of 5 stars Not Folk-Rock; Original Rock Songs Based on Folk Melodies.......2003-05-11

This is great stuff. This could hardly be called folk-rock, however. What these chaps have managed to do is create original rock songs using melodies lifted from Swedish folk songs. And the results are spectacular. It's the perfect marriage of the melody of folk and the power of rock. It's all here: head-banging-70s-style-riff-rock, 90's heavy metal, and progressive rock, all with those omnipresent beautiful melodies. It's catchy, it's melodic, it's crunching, and at times it even starts to stray into rock-ballad territory but never gets overly sappy. The musicianship is phenomenal for a debut CD: there is great guitar playing throughout and a nice combination of atmospheric synthesizers and Hammond organ. Several songs sound like they could be FM hits on a "classic rock" type station as they stick in your head with incredible hooks. The complaints are very minor: the vocalist sounds like a more mellow, more laid-back, less annoying version of Glenn Hughes crossed with the AC/DC singer (whose name escapes me because I'm not an AC/DC fan) crossed with Joe Cocker. Imagine what each of these 3 vocalists might sound like always singing quietly rather than screaming, and this approximates what the vocalist sounds like at various times. If you don't particularly care for any of these vocalists, the vocals take getting used to. (But at least there are none of those awful death-growling-grunt vocals which ruin so many heavy metal songs). A couple of the songs have really goofy, stupid, inane lyrics and a robotic-disco voice is used on part of one song. And production-wise, the bottom end is lacking. Even with the bass turned up all the way, much of the time you can hardly hear the bass. But really, these are minor complaints. The music is so good that these little annoyances hardly get in the way. There simply aren't any really weak songs here. In terms of musicianship and song-writing, this is as good as anything out there today. I'm sure this group would obtain a VERY loyal following if they got any airplay whatsoever. This is a MUST not only for those who prefer the extreme ROCK end of the spectrum of folk-rock but also for fans of melodic rock, riff-rock, tasteful symphonic metal, and hard-edged progressive rock.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Moods Extraordinaire!.......2001-11-21

This CD is a wonderful compendium of music that sounds like it could have come from some terrific motion pictures - a true potpourri of styles. The orchestral music is rich and lush, evocative of romance, terror, sadness, excitement and joy. Unfortunately, since amazon took down the sound samples, you can't hear any of that here.

5 out of 5 stars Wolfram provides the score - you provide the images.......2000-11-08

I love the title of this CD - and it fulfills its promise, actually "piercing" the veil of movie-music and making us realize it stands alone. Better yet, it brings its own imagery. Films without music would be amazingly empty. But it turns out music without film is surprisingly full - at least it is when Mark Wolfram composes it. He has the gift of truly great composers - the ability to translate emotion into music, and when we listen, the emotions course through us. Anyone who loves film score CDs will love this and play it over and over again, whether as background for a lovely evening, or as a listening adventure in your favorite recliner. The most visual musical experience you can imagine, this CD has it all! The listener is transported from the tense jeopardy of a crime drama to the soothing amblings of a long awaited trip home. He takes us through every genre - modern crime, historical, science fiction, soap opera, epic, and everything in between. It's as though we journey from Siberia to the great American plains, from the high Rockies to down and dirty streets. Wolfram takes us from contemporary symphonic passages to historical interludes to futuristic sojourns; from tension to humor, from macabre to benign. Is there anything Mark Wolfram CAN'T compose? I suspect not. I wonder why we don't see his name more often on the big screen? I know we will.

      5 out of 5 stars A Wolfram Wrightwood Winner!.......2000-10-11

Mark Wolfram has scored a real winner with 'Veil'. Musically and emotionally, it can be turbulent and - more often - soothing all at the same time. Its impact is very similar to what I experienced the first time I heard the score for 'The Piano'. 'Veil' is what you want to listen to in a darkened room while wrestling with a problem, or simply unwinding after a long day. My only criticism is that the cuts are too short. I'm left wanting more! Please hurry with your next offering, Mr. Wolfram.

      5 out of 5 stars Ears Only?.......2000-10-03

Close your eyes and listen to Mark Wolfram's Piercing the Celluloid Veil and you are at the movies, sitting in the third row on the left. Eminently evocative, stimulating to the imagination, wholly engrossing, and productive of many images, this CD will take you away with vision after vision.

5 out of 5 stars The Veil Was Pierced.......2000-09-27

Listening to this recording was an astonishing experience for me. I followed the suggestions in the liner notes, turned off the lights, added candles and just listened. I am a writer, though not a screen writer. Immediately a story began to play in my mind's eye. I got characters, action, a plot and everything. In fact, I am going to write that story and dedicate it to Mark. Bravo! And thanks for the inspiration.
